SB Audigy 2 ZS and AMD's Cool'n'Quiet = Incompatib

Hello! Is anyone using these two combines on their machines? If so, then do you have any problems like crashes, blue screens, etc. especially after your computer speeds up overnight of idleness/long slow downs? I seem to have them in Windows XP Pro. SP2 with all updates, latest non-beta Audigy 2 ZS driver, etc. No problems if I disable AMD's Cool'n'Quiet in CMOS. Thank you in advance.

Just for kicks, I decided to install this card on a Dell that I happen to have around.. the specs are above and beyond the configuration of my regular computer (whose specs are above and beyond the specs listed for the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum).. and I am unhappy to report that the same freezing problems occur. I am still unable to use any web update features for ANY of my software, and I am still unable to record in 24 bit audio.

here's the deal.
I am what one would call a computer expert, but unfortunately I seem to miss something in this particular matter, unlike in other cases, which is very frustrating.
I personally own loads of MSI boards, most of which for amd64 systems, so I have experience with the drivers and utilities and I know how to get these systems up and running with cool 'n' quiet, except for this particular system. I know the cpu can't be to blame for this, since it supports cool 'n' quiet. I also have owned some other boards from other manufacturers (also amd64), so I'd like to think that I am aquainted with the technology.
msi k8n neo3 motherboard:
- bought this one three days ago
- came with bios version 1.05x (!!!)
- updated the bios to 1.5x (amongst others because of the sempron support)
- enabled the coolnquiet feature (OC options were enabled, settings to optimized, captain etc. etc. (what I usually do)).
- installed the drivers from the cd; the .inf driver was also installed (I saw a screen confirming that).
- put energy management to minimalized setting
- rebooted
and... nothing! well, except for the normal speed it should not be running on at 0% cpu load (1607 MHz).
tried installing the standard amd driver from the amd website; also nothing... I did come across this problem once before and then I had to conclude that the problem could be resolved by installing another amd a64 driver package that came from another manufacturer's motherboard cd (which should not be the problem of course, because this driver (just as the cpu) should be generic).
configuration:
- this board @ bios 1.5x
- amd 2800+ sempron (latest model) + boxed cooler
- 2x samsung ddr400 512mb (also tested it with corsair modules)
- dvd-drive
- couple of hard drives connected to pata/sata, no raid enabled.
- winxp-32 us. SP2
apart from this particular problem, the system works just fine.
who can help me out?

ordinary desktop boards won't support changing multiplier on the fly. only laptop mobos do this. mobile athlons XPs are only popular with overclockers, because of the unlocked multiplier in BIOS. not all mobos support Mobile Athlons though, some modifications may need to be done
however, the Athlon64 cpu's and mobos have "Cool n Quiet" technology, which follows the laptop PowerNow! feature, so when cpu is not heavily worked, the clock speed drops to 800mhz, allowing the CPU to run cooler and allows thermal controlled fans to operate slower i think this would suit you better

I've upgraded the BIOS to 1.1 and activated the cool n quiet mode. I've also downloaded the AMD driver (1.1.0.0) and installed that.
The CPU still runs at full speed. Have I missed something, or is it just pot luck whether this works or not?
Any help would be appreciated.

I just flashed to 1.2 and stilll no CnQ.
From other posts I'm wondering if the problem is related to one or both of:
Win2K + Athlon 64 3000+. That's what I have and others with trouble seem to
have the same. I tried reloading the AMD drivers, removing CoreCenter
and the only thing that works ever is the fan speed control. I never get the
extra folder in power options under control panel. Maybe since the Win2K
AMD driver is so old it doesnt detect the cPU properly and therfore doesnt start up?
I may still switch the CPU fan over to the Zalman CuAl since the retail AMD fan has a loud hum at 2500-3000RPM. But the reduced wattage and heat is worth trying to get if possible.
I already ordered more RAM and WinXP Pro from newegg so I guess I can see
if its the OS level/AMD drivers also fix the problem.
Overall I'm happy with the board. Its stable under Linux (RH 9.0) and Win2K under prime95 tests for hours. Haven't had time to try day long tests. Certainly stable under hours of BF1942.
For those of you hyper about RAM settings checkout the Ace' s hardware test.
I'm a bit suprised that it matters so little for the Athlon 64 but it's nice to hear.
Though I'm always amazed at people paying huge sums for better RAM for meager performance improvements- especially on real world programs and games.

AMD64 versions of RH Fedora Yarrow test failed to detect I had a graphics card.
Wierd since /proc seems fine. Anyone have a favorite AMD64 linux distro that works well installed from CDROM or ftp? I may just wait- little to gain at the moment suffering through beta quality software/OS.

I use the 3.6 bios ver and my option Cool'n'Quiet is Enable, In XP PRO SP2 I have dowlnload and installed the last drivers of AMD Athlon 64.
My fan speed is always at 3013, when I start CoreCenter (Last version of msi utility) I have no option for Cool'n'quiet.
With Google image i have seen some screen shoot with Cool'n'Quiet in CoreCenter.
What can I do, i'm feed up to listen this fan with 1% of cpu activity.

Fan Control isn't an AMD CnQ function. Varying fan speed is a different function that's dependent on the motherboard's engineering. That's done by varying the voltage to the fan headers. I don't believe this board has that abiliity.

Edit: Using fans with thermistors to vary RPM can accomplish that function independent of the board.
How control the fan, i test this afternoon and anoter car K8N Platinum and when run Corecenter we can saw Cool'n'Quiet in the program and when i active in then fan speed fall at 900 in fact of 3100 ???.

How to disable Cool N Quiet driver when it isnt in the bios or registry for Roxio game capture?

1. HP G60-120 US Notebook PC
2. Windows 7 32-bit
3. No error messages
4. No changes before issue occured.
I was told by Roxio (company of the capture card I bought to record gameplay on my Xbox) to call HP and get my Cool N Quiet driver disabled after I updated my other drivers and still had problems with my capture card. Can somebody tell me where to find it other than in the registry and bios because it is NOT in there and I have looked already more than 5 times or if you know where I can get it remotely disabled. HP cannot remotely disable it because I just talked to them and they don't have the power to do that.

No, Corecenter is almost useless and is NOT needed to "activate" Cool n Quiet. The best it can do is tell you fan speed and temps, and even that is questionable. It will also tell you clock speed but you can get that from right clicking "My Computer" choose Properties, go to General tab, note mhz displayed there. If it is about half of full clock speed for your CPU, then CnQ is working right. If it shows full clock speed, then CoolnQuiet is NOT working and you need to re-read Mr. Woo's original post which gives details about how to enable it.
Next, about fan speed. You have to understand that CnQ does not have anything to do with fan speed directly. Unless you have fan speed control disabled in BIOS, then your fan is going to control as you described whether you have CnQ enabled or not. In BIOS, in the H/W Monitor section, there is a place to enable or disable fan speed control - it's called CPU Smart Temperature Monitor or something like that.
As long as it is enabled and your fan is compatible and hooked up right, the fan will ramp up and down to control temperature. This is independent of CnQ. And it is independent of Corecenter. Disable CnQ and shutdown CoreCenter, the mobo still controls fan speed.

Phenom II x3 720 BE doesn`t run Cool`n Quiet

Hello. Almost a week running my new x3 720 and seems to be OK. Temps are 19ºC on boot, 31-32ªC idle and 37-39º running Photoshop CS3 with some heavy image files, 80-120Mb. Just for try, I did overclocked it up to 3.2 Ghz (200x16 and 1.47V) and temperature went up to 46-47ºC. ¿Is this normally? I did it slowly, mounting x0.5, 14.5/15/15.5/16 and rebooting every step. First I changed voltage to 1.5V, when I reached the3.2 Ghz I went down a little, at 1.47. Stable and running great. However, I don`t think 46ºC are better than 32ºC, so I get back to its original x14 and 32ºC.
Also, just for try, I boot and enabled the Cool`n Quiet. Never did it before with the others Athlon x64 Dual Core, I never saw what`s the difference. Now, my K9N2 sli platinum can`t activate this function. I tyred several times, enableling and rebooting and nothing. Seems the same mobo is deactivating this function on the reboot.
What`s this?

Hello. I`m running Win7 x86. Really, that`s only curiosity, isn`t my intention to use that feature. I only try to see if everything is running normally. May be that: on Control Panel/Energy options I activated High Efficiency. Could be.
No OC, I don`t want more heat. I just figured that by mistake I used a different thermal grease when I upgraded the new Phenom II x3 720 BE, using a generic one instead of the OCZ one, much more better. Later, I`ll repace it.

Crackling Issues with AMD Cool'n'Quiet and Intel SpeedS

After enabling AMD Cool'n'Quiet on my Vista 64 computer ([url="http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=2093">see this thread[/url]), I noticed that I had crackling in my audio from my Creative X-Fi. I put my Minimum Processor State back to 00%, and the crackling is gone. With both Minimum and Maximum Processor State on 00%, I have no crackling issues. I dont know if this is conected or not, its possible cool N quiet creates other noise as well. I never did like the util. But, it might stand to reason that if the utility was creating voltage or signal variations it could cause the rice krispies syndrome so many people have been talking about. Have to get some more feedback on this issue.

[Athlon64] Cool n Quiet and AMD driver problem...

I hate to be the one to start another cool and quiet thread, but this is a problem I can't figure out. I have been running cool and quiet on my NEO Athlon 64 motherboard for over a year now, and it has worked perfectly, until today. I re-installed windows, because it was giving me problems, thanks to one too many virus and spyware attacks over the past year. Anyway, I installed windows, installed service pack 1, and all the assorted drivers for my hardware. I downloaded the latest AMD cpu driver and installed it. I have my power option set to minimal. I have everything just as it was, but the cool and quiet never kicks in. I am monitoring it with the Cool and Quiet panel, and it just sets at 2000 mhz. Cool and Quiet is turned on in the bios, and so is acpi. Windows xp reports having ACPI installed. I'm stumped. Is the fact I am using SP1 and have not upgraded to SP2 have anything to do with this? I notice the latest AMD cpu driver mentions it is for winxp SP2. I am avoiding SP2 because it has an issue with software that I use on my network. If it's because of SP2, is there a site I could download the older AMD cpu drivers from, to get this thing working? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Well I remember to be in the same case, but when I reinstalled the WinXP, it comes with the SP2 integrated and I just active the Cool n Quiet installing the AMD Power Monitor lasted version and set se PM to Minimal, and it works perfectly, And about your problem with the WinXPSP2 Firewall you just have to unmark the LAN protection from the Firewall settings and thats all...

Sblive not working with Cool n'Quiet, how about Audigy

My SBli've will not work with Cool n'Quiet enabled. I tried moving it from slot to slot, I fumbled with the Bios (and every change made matters worse), memory is ok (at least according to memtest and prime95), kx drivers won't help either (but sound a lot nicer).
Well, what gives, the card is a little over seven years old and has earned a retirement.
I'm thinking about replacing it with an Audigy 4 (not pro) und would be very happy if someone could write about her or his experience with the card, esp. with Cool n'Quiet enabled.
Btw. what kind of card is it anyway? Does it use a 0k2-Chip?

I cant promize anything, but it should work. X-FI and Audigy 2 work just fine with C&Q enabled. So Audigy 4 should work fine too.

For christmas i got a new AMD Athlon X2 3800+ CPU. System Specs Below.

Now, when ever i'm playing a game, at random time periods, the system will start looping the sound, and after a few seconds it will reboot. When it does this, the monitor will go into standby until it restarts,with the little amber light and everything. It does it more often on some games than others. The memory has passed a 24 hr memtest 86 with no errors, and this is the second psu i've tired and still get the same result. The psu in it right now is brand new. I dunno what to do. I'm tired of not being able to play my games b/c of this. The heatsink on the CPU is stock. Also on the graphics card. Temps never reach above 47C on the processor and 65C on the GFX card. Please help me.

The first day after a clean install i runned MSI Live update and it just froze (no other application running) force restart and then the hard disk was gone.Fixed it then updated all the drivers for mb graphics nvidia drivers AMD hot fix and M$ hot fix but still it just freezes.Today there were 2 one when i run MSI live update(??????) and another when using 3Dmark06(froze between tests).
Used memtest for 1 hour no errors no Oc althought when used MSI core cell Oc(bios) in comander mode froze in 1 min.Temps dont go above 41 42 (user mode 7/8 fan speed in core center when in Cool n Quiet temps reach 42 43 even 46 and it keeps the rpm near 1100 1200????????)when running games apps with stock fan.

Creative Audigy 2 and Windows Vista: Sound volume turns down when I try to turn it

I have a strange problem with my audio in Vista. I have a Creative Audigy 2 and Creative 6700 speakers. My full system specification is below but please note I did not have this issue in my previous Vista build - its only happening since I did a reinstall. Anyway, when I swich on the speakers using the remote control unit for the 6700 speakers the sound comes on but then it turns down. I have to then increase the volume by a large amount for it to start playing sound again and then turn it down to listening volume. This issue is not application specific - it happens in everything: Winamp, WMP, games, etc etc?I'm using [color="#000000"]Creative Sound Blaster Audigy series Vista Driver 2.2.0002 and I've tried reinstall several times. I've tried doing diagnostic startup etc using msconfig in case something was conflicting and its still happening.

Have you checked the volume button? It might be physically stuck. To determine whether a hardware repair is needed, you need to follow these steps:
1. Try doing a hard reset:
Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
After that: test the device to see whether the issue is solved.
2. If the issue is not solved, you should backup the device and restore it as new.
In that case, use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup.
If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694 for causes and solutions

AMD cool n quiet

Can I get some BIOS with AMD Cool n Quiet option enabled?
I get irritate when my A8 5550m cant get higher than 2.1GHz when the CPU can handle even 3.1GHz. I can fix this with restarting only, and it get back to 2.1GHz when I power on my laptop

64 bit I hope. Go into the device manager and look for the processor. Right click on the processor and choose properties then driver, then driver details. It should say amd processor rather than generic processor. The driver name should have amd in it (amdk8.sys) and not just processor.sys or something generic. For mobile processors the correct name is PowerNow! not Cool 'n Quiet although I cannot recall if the zv5000z actually uses a mobile processor or a desktop processor. I believe it is mobile.

Crackling! When AMD Cool'n'Quiet is enab

I was wondering why that is, recently because summer, I have enabled AMD Cool'n'Quiet option, when I switch it on, the X-Fi (Elite Pro) begins to crackle. I turn it off, it becomes flawless once again.

K8n neo bios 1.4 temps and cool n quiet

Hi,
I recently flashed to bios 1.4 and it has been fine thus far. However I have two issues that may be related to this new bios.
Windows XP utilties (mbm, sandra, speedfan, even corecell) all report my temps to be in the mid 30 degrees C, however the bios reports them as 45 degrees, which should I trust?
Also I think I've gotten half of cool n quiet working, vcore is down when cpu is not doing intensive work and so is the multiplier, making it run approx 1 GHz give or take. However, I believe that my AMD stock fan always spins around the same speed (approx 3200 rpm), regardless whether the cpu is doing intensive work or idles, is something wrong? I have the cool, wheres the quiet where my fan is supposed to slow down?
Any help is appreciated!

well the temperature in bios is very likely to to be above of that in windows, because cool n quiet doesnt work in bios and processor runs at normal frequencies there. The fan speed problem can be either of two things i know, first is that you haven't enabled smart cpu fan in bios and other is if you go to standby and then resume, it seems that cool n quiet works after it but mobo doesn't control the fan speed after standby. These are just some things i have noticed. The bios 1.4 is very good btw (atleast for normal use, i dont't overclock so no idea about that).
