SB Live 5.1 Reinstall W/XP

I have seen several posts with this issue but no resolutions. I built a pc earlier with an OEM card. I do not have the cd and am trying to use the drivers listed here. I get the "no device detected error". I there a solution to get the card installed and working again. BTW, device manager detects the card. Do I need to use the original cd or is there a work around? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
I ordered the replacement CD .. it cost $4.99. Shipping was even more, about $6 or $7. IT was that, or go buy another similar card for 25 or 30 bucks ...
Thanks for the help. Question is, why do the downloads off the net not include a manual install option for this card. I tried a bunch of things but the download is too tight. Also, why could I not install a generic driver, THEN the updated drivers. Oh well ...

  • I deleted all of the symantec software  on my macbook, but I am getting an error message saying to run live update or reinstall. I don't know why this is happening, I heard I may still have a file but I have looked and cannot find one. How do I fix this?

If there is a leftover file, where do I find it. And is my computer at risk?

I tried doing both, I couldnt find either symantec or live update in applications or when I searched through finder. I went to the activity monitor and found symantec and quit the process but the next time i logged on to my computer, it came back. this is what the error message looks like
    Thanks for trying!

  • I'm about to lose it! SB Live! and KT7Pro2 follies.

I'm past the point of frustrated.  I just bought a K7TPro2 (6330) to replace my original K7T that died on me.  I have a SoundBlaster Live! Platinum (CT-4760) that worked just fine with that system that I am now trying to install in the Pro2.  I've logged about 8 hours in that endeavor to date.  Here's the skinny of it (I'll try to be brief).
Windows XP fully recognizes the Live! card and gives every indication that it is in place and working; minus the sound.  I do want to keep the Live! card as it has some nice features for musicians who use Cakewalk; more specifically SoundFonts (please tell me if the AC97 can do the same).  The connectors on the front are very nice too.
    - I checked all of the connections, wiring, etc. threefold
    - with the new motherboard, I did buy a new case with a 400W Power Supply, running Athlon 1.1Ghz, 356Meg PC100 RAM
     - I flashed the 6330 bios with the latest, 3.6 I think
     - I installed the Via 4 in 1 patch, multiple, multiple times
     - I downloaded the latest and greatest Live! drivers and installed, deleted, and reinstalled many, many times
     - I even went throught the registry deleting references to the Live! before reinstalling
     - I've tried the above with the onboard sound bios settings both enabled and disabled (onboard sound, modem, legacy audio settings)
     - I've tried the above with Windows enabling/disabling the onboard AC97 sound
    - I manually set IRQ 5 to legacy audio, the Live! card shows up on IRQ5, no conflicts there
    - I switched PCI slots
    - I threw the computer out the window (in my dreams)
I think that's the skinny of it.  Please, can anybody help?  I'm not completely opposed to buying a new card if it works well with SoundFonts, Cakewalk, and has an excellect sound/noise ratio. (and costs less than $150)

Please listen to what goofball2k said you really should try it in another machine first as if it's not the sound card that $400 wasted.
Also have you taken out the sound card and enabled the onboard sound yet? Try it and see if you can get the AC'97 working.
    Cheers

  • [Solved]Boot from USB HDD - Root device doesn't exist. Major/minor

My problem is that the kernel seems (or starts) to load, but then I get an error:
    Root device 'UUID=1234 . . .' doesn't exist.
    Attempting to create it.
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device "UUID=1234 . . .'
You are being dropped into recovery shell
I found a few links on the web and in the forums, but nothing that really solved it for me. The solved ones usually downgraded the kernel.  I haven't done that yet.  I thought I'd try here first.
I have a 320GB USB HDD that I have been using to experiment with different linux distros.  I have a few working successfully (OpenSUSE,Mint,Ubuntu,Debian,Fedora, etc).  I'm very new at this but have been reading a lot and putting a lot of time into it.  I have legacy grub loaded on the MBR and use the menu.lst on my openSUSE partition to boot everything.  Because the partitions for some of the distros are so far into the disk I needed to create directories on openSUSE's /boot directory to contain the kernel and initrramfs files (like /boot/fedora).  This seems to work for the other distros.  I did the same thing for Arch.
So when I installed Arch I haven't used the bootloader section of the installation.
I'm using the 2011.08.09-netinstall-i686.iso Live CD.
I tried a few things including:
    1.    changing the HOOKS in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
        a.    adding usb to the "HOOKS"
        b.    removing and adding autodetect
        c.    adding and removing "sata_sil" (although I'm not even sure if my device uses it)
    2.    changing the kernel line:
        a.    from using "UUID=" to (hd0,1) to sdb1.
        b.    added rootdelay=8
    3.    repartition all of my arch partitions using cfdisk from my Live CD and reinstall. I used gparted on OpenSUSE to do it the first time.
This may be connected. When I fdisk -l from the Arch Live CD I get extra data and an error for each of my arch partitions (and only my arch partitions):
Disk does't contain a valid partition table
When I fdisk -l from OpenSUSE I don't get the data paragraphs or errors about the arch partitions?
    Here is my /etc/fstab:

I'm IN!  Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
The arch system didn't like the identifier I was using for the root partition. By looking at the /dev/disk/by-id while the arch system was running, I could see what the system wanted me to call the partition.  So after the system error'd-out and I was in the recovery shell at the [ramfs /] prompt:
    # ls -lF /dev/disk/by-id > by-id.txt
    # vi by-id.txt
I could have used any of the identifiers listed in the by-id (there were 3), by-uuid(1), by-label(1) or by path(1). I tried them all. I had to write these down by hand because it is a ram filesystem.
The article that finally got me there is:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pe … ice_naming
Anyway my openSUSE grub menu.lst ended up like this:
    ####arch on sda10 - legacy grub
    title ARCH
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /boot/arch/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/510bb601-13c1-46ec-87c0-a800dd2efb8b ro rootdelay=8 rootfstype=ext4
    initrd /boot/arch/initramfs-linux.img
    savedefault
    boot
It's easy once you: 1. beat your head against the wall
                        2. read further
                3. repeat 1 and 2
    Back to the "Beginner's Guide",4 Post-Installation.  Yikes!

We are in the middle of updating our reports from version 8.5 to Xi (Xi because no later version are compatible with our CRM).
I want to export a report to Excel 8 Extended.  This option is not available in Xi. However it is in version 8.5
System info : Windows 7 or 8 professional, Xi Professional - 32 bit
I have seem many posts about this issue and have tried a myriad of different approaches, all to no avail.
    I have:
    updated to version Xi 15.5.12.1838
renamed all occurances of crxf_xls.dll to OLD-crxf_xls.dll
copied u2fxlsdll to c:\windows\system32, and to the folder where the CR Xi executable lives
    Uninstalled and reinstalled CR Xi
tried to register u2fxlsdll (yes, I know only com objects need to be registered)
searched for registry (regedit) for this dll (not found)
What do I need to try next?

  • Numerous Norton anti-virus error messages appear whenever I start my iMac.

Whenever I restart my new iMac I get approximately 10 NORTON AntiVirus Error messages which state: "Norton virus Auto-Protect could not continue. Please run Live Update or reinstall Norton Antivirus and Restart (Code: 10)." I've tried all these things and have attempted to uninstall Norton and Symantec products to no avail. In my system preferences under the category OTHER there exists a file called Norton Auto-Protect and Norton Quick Menu which I can't do anything with. How can I stop these messages from appearing every time I start my iMac? Ideally, I'd just like to get rid of Norton and Symantec.

  • [Solved] Gummiboot fails to load Initramfs

I installed Arch on two partitions, one encrypted with LVM on LUKS
(sda2) and a separate /boot partition (sda1). I use gummiboot as my bootloader.
The gummiboot entry which loads the initramfs looks as follows:
    title Arch linux
    efi \EFI\arch\vmlinuz-linux.efi
    options initrd=\EFI\arch\initramfs-linux.img cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:vgroup root=/dev/mapper/vgroup-root rw acpi_backlight=vendor
After each kernel update (i.e. rebuilding the initramfs) I manually copy
the images to where the loader entries point.
    cp /boot/initramfs-linux.img /boot/EFI/arch/
    cp /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img /boot/EFI/arch/
    cp /boot/vmlinuz-linux /boot/EFI/arch/
    cp /boot/vmlinuz-linux /boot/EFI/arch/vmlinuz-linux.efi
(Actually I'm not sure if I need the .efi extension on vimlinuz-linux,
    so I copy them both...)
When this Laptop boots, it shows the gummiboot loader and I select the
"Arch Linux" entry. With the last kernel update, when I hit the "Arch
Linux" boot entry, the screen goes black for some seconds, then the
whole screen gets pixelated with some colorful static noise.
It looks like the initramfs is corrupted/not found, so chrooted into my
system from the live installer and reinstalled the kernel, mkinitcpio
and gummiboot ('linux' 3.12.7-2, 'gummiboot' 41-1, 'mkinitcpio' 16-2).
    I also re-ran
    gummiboot install
Still, the system refuses to boot.
Since I get no error output at all, I can't provide much more debug
information. I am aware of a rather large number of threads but in
virtually all of those cases the boot process crashes with some helpful
    error messages...
Anyone got some helpful hint? It looks like I am missing something
    obvious.

By the way, why are you copying your bootimages manually? Your folders seem odd to me, but maybe thats just a lack of information on my side.
An loader entry on my box looks like this:
    root@x230 /boot/loader/entries # cat arch.conf
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 quiet rw init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd add_efi.memmap acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"
The .img files are simply in /boot where mkinitcpio puts them after the kernel update.

  • [Solved]Grub multiboot help..

    Hi all.
I am new to linux and i am having hard time installing grub. I am booting 5-6 OS'es
But there is a problem configuring one OS.
I have 80 GB SCSI drive. So I have:-
    sda1 - 20 GB for Windows C
(sda2-Logical part, 3&4 are cd drives)
    sda5 - 25 GB for Windows D
Sda6 - 5 GB Open Suse  (just to get used to..)
    sda7 - 5 GB fedora 11   --------||---------
    sda8 - 500 MB fedora /boot partition
    sda 9 - 5 GB Slackware (Beginner)
    sda10 - 2 Gb Swap
sda11 - 12 GB ARCH (Love to use it since quite a time now)
Now I have installed suse, slack and fedora on a PC with winxp and arch already installed on it. So MBR was overwritten by opensuse w/o detecting ARCH,Fed as it doesnt detect ext4(yet!) and messed up entries for fed and arch and slack(it didnt detect slacks entry, i think it should..). So I ran Arch live cd and reinstalled grub(through archwiki article). Now the grub reads the menu.lst file from fedora's /boot(sda8) strange!. Everything works fine except that slackware has no entry in grub or lilo(i didnt install lilo either - yes i know i goofed up there)...
Now all I want to know is that there any way to add a slack entry in grub w/o having to boot slack live dvd and install grub for slack then again boot arch live cd(as slack wont detect ext4 partitions) and do grub-install again and again?
    Any help/explanation is appreciated guyz.

Well all i can say is tht i tried...I reinstalled grub got the Slack kernel to boot, but it stopped in the middle of booting saying Kernel Panic could not mount root filesystem. So I built initrd.gz img and stilll no joy. So I reinstalld whole slack again and installd lilo but still the kernel panicked! Well so no place for slack on the system, removing slack was the only workaround possible(4 now). Will use it on virtual machine and test it.But boy I got some idea about grub and boot stuff...! No site provides articles as gud as archwiki!

  • [SOLVED (mysteriously)] Arch on USB not recognized during boot

    Hi there,
I hope, someone can help me with my problem, I have been searching and trying different things for quite some time now, without success.
I treated myself a new Notebook, Acer Aspire S7 and wanted to run Arch on it. However I am new to Linux and want to try it out on an USB-Stick, to keep the factory install of Win8 intact. (Also, this notebook does not have such a great HDD capacity) Additionally I want to have full disk encryption.
So I followed the Beginner's Guide with modifications described here and here
When it came to install the bootloader I chose Grub for EFI.
I then removed the USB-Stick with the live-Arch, which I used for installation and rebooted and it worked!
However: As soon as I completely shut down and boot again, the USB-Stick with my installation is no longer recognized. If i boot the live-Arch again, reinstall Grub and then reboot, it again works.
Here is something, I found strange. This is the output of efibootmgr:
    BootCurrent: 0000
    Timeout: 0 seconds
    BootOrder: 2001,0003,0002,2002,2003
    Boot0000* USB HDD: KingstonDataTraveler 2.0
    Boot0001* Intel HDD0
    Boot0002* Windows Boot Manager
    Boot0003* arch_grub
    Boot2001* EFI USB Device
    Boot2002* EFI DVD/CDROM
    Boot2003* EFI Network
BootCurrent is 0000, but that number does not appear in the Boot-Order list. Could that be something?
Well, I hope someone has an idea. I will happily share any information about my setup with you, just ask.
    Thanks,
    Max

Sorry for digging that threat up again. I just wanted to share with you the solution to the problem I was having. Perhaps it will save someone else some frustration.
The Acer Aspire S7 has a dongle that goes in the display port and provides an ethernet and an VGA port. It was that dongle that prevented the USB stick with the Arch installation from being recognized. Done attached -> USB stick was ignored, dongle detached -> it worked.
I have no idea, why that is the case, but maybe this info is helpful for someone.
    Cheers,
    Max

  • [SOLVED] arch wont boot after triple boot experiment

    Hi,
I cannot boot into arch anymore after installing ubuntu to another partition on my hard drive.
I used grub to dual boot arch and windows, but i need to use ROS and there are no working packages for arch so i tried to install ubuntu on another partition and triple boot.
Somhow my arch got broken by the ubuntu setup.
    Windows still boots fine.
I already chrooted (to arch) from a live cd and reinstalled grub and did
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
, after that ubuntu appeared in the grub selection menu but arch still wont boot.
Arch boot hangs after checking /dev/sda6 for errors (arch partition), i cannot type or ctrl+shift+fx to another terminal
Anybody has an idea what got broken by ubuntu and how i can repair arch?
    thanks!

Hey so i chroot again following this artikle: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_Root
    then i did
    pacman -Syyu mkinitcpio linux udev
    and restarted
I tried starting arch again and it seemed to still not work, this time i gave it some more time and it actually booted.
It took very long though (more then 3 minutes or so)
in journalctl if found those lines:
Sep 09 04:20:00 meanarchy kernel: USB Video Class driver (1.1.1)
    Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Job dev-disk-by\x2duuid-12027d8a\x2dd4b0\x2d4559\x2daa1c\x2de3ea5ca8f5bb.device/start timed out.
Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device dev-disk-by\x2duuid-12027d8a\x2dd4b0\x2d4559\x2daa1c\x2de3ea5ca8f5bb.device.
    Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Dependency failed for /dev/disk/by-uuid/12027d8a-d4b0-4559-aa1c-e3ea5ca8f5bb.
    Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Starting Swap.
so it seems boot is searching for some disk device 1:25 minutes before it fails.
I think i know the reason: I resized the Partition of arch while installing ubuntu this changes the uuid of the partition, now something is waiting for this disk to become ready because it still has the old uuid written somwhere.
UUIDs really suck, they are not human readable and always have problems with them if i touch my partitions.

  • Installing graphic card drivers kill windows

    Dear all,
It all started when the computer suddenly turned off. On turning it on again, it wouldn't enter Windows. It stayed forever (>24h) in the screen "loading windows". Entering in the recovery mode, none of the offered options would help (no restore points working, no recovery function working, no automatic repair.... nothing).
I decided to recover my important files and go for a total cleaning. So I used the Knoppix Live CD to enter with Knoppix into the computer and save all my files in an external disk. Then I used the Windows 7 Live CD to reinstall windows 7 from scratch, saving nothing from the previous installed OS, and formating the hard drive, and even joining all partitions in one.
Windows 7 Home Premium was installed successfully with the original Product Key. Then, I downloaded all drivers for the dv6-6193es from the support.hp.com website (a total of 48 drivers) and installed them all sequentially.
From the 48 drivers, 40 are installed successfully, 6 don't manage to install (see list below, although I suspect it's not really important) and 2 of them return me back to the original problem: sp53025 and sp55092. These two drivers are related to the AMD RADEON graphics card.
After installing sp53025 driver, and restarting the computer as required for the installation to be completed, the windows would not load and would get stuck in the "loading" page forever. I manually turned off the computer and with the Windows 7 Live CD restarted the whole process (format, reinstall Win 7, re-install all drivers from the beginning, skipping sp53025...). Until I reached sp55092, and again the exact same problem. This time, I had created a restoration point which luckily could be restored from the Win7 Live CD so I could go back to the moment before installing sp55092.
What is the problem? Is the graphics card dead?
Just for reference, the other 7 drivers that could not be installed are the following:
sp52473 - "The computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"
sp53402 - "This softpaq will not be installed because HP Recovery Manager cannot be found in your system."
sp54471 - "The computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"
sp55063 - "El hardware Bluetooth debe estar activado para ejecutar este paquete de instalación"
sp55093 - "Fresco Logic USB3 Host Controller is not found!"
sp68351 - "Softpaq does not apply to the system, no HP Recovery Manager installed."
PS: in addition, this message window pops up every time I turn the computer on:
Any feedback and/or help on my problem will be highly appreciated!

This could be good advice. But does that mean I should ignore the updates that windows and ATI's built-in driver update finds? If so do you have a link to the URL of the legitimate drivers? That would be greatly appreciated. That way I can test your theory and possibly salvage the machine.
Yes, don't use Windows Update for the Switchable graphics update. Only use HP driver site for switchable graphics drivers. And disable ATI/AMD update to prevent those updates. Put this way if you don't see that switchable graphics update on HP then don't update it-they tested and configured it for the stablility and updating it without confirming that the update is a verified it is for switchable graphics.

I followed the Apple troubleshooting advice--delete temp files, uninstall itunes, shut down computer, restart, reinstall.  What's the problem and, especially, what's the fix? Walter Cohen

I, too am having the same issues as above like the many others. For days i have been trying to uninstall reinstall as per troubleshooting but to no avail.Apple, you need to fix this!

I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation.  My computer did have the faulty part you linked to.  I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager.  Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge.  They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test.  They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above.  I've never had this experience before.  Even brand new, I got occasional crashes.  Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow.  Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed.  Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton.
