[SOLVED] Strange sound problems (SoundBlaster Live! 5.1)
Hi all,
My system has been running flawlessly with Arch for years, however recently my sound started playing up. As in the ALSA wiki, here are the important pieces of information:
lspci output, you can see my sound card at the bottom:
[owen@oblong ~]$ lspci

lsmod output, you can see the appropriate modules loaded:
[owen@oblong ~]$ lsmod | grep snd
snd_seq_oss 31872 0
snd_seq_midi_event 8192 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 49968 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event

snd_mixer_oss 16512 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_emu10k1 138144 0

soundcore 8160 1 snd
However, now is where things start to get strange. In days gone by I used to have, simply, a device node /dev/dsp which was the sound device. I'm pretty sure that my card supports hardware mixing which explains why I only had a single hardware device and not heaps of software ones. But now:
[owen@oblong ~]$ ls /dev/ | grep dsp
[owen@oblong ~]$
[owen@oblong ~]$ ls /dev/snd/
seq timer
Where the wiki says: If you have at least the devices controlC0 and pcmC0D0p or similar, then your sound modules have been detected and loaded properly.
And the result of some other commands:
[owen@oblong ~]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/alsa restart
Password:
:: Saving ALSA Levels [BUSY] /usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1502: No soundcards found...
[DONE]
:: Restoring ALSA Levels [BUSY] /usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1608: No soundcards found...
[FAIL]
Same for alsamixer:
[owen@oblong ~]$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
Running alsaconf goes through all the normal steps, detects my card, sets it up etc, but when it tries to restart the alsa service (as above) the same result is had.
Any ideas? I'm totally stumped.

K8T Neo-FIS2R onboard sound limitation?
Reading southmikes unofficial guide, it seems you can't use both onboard sound AND a PCI sound card (such as a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz).
Is this still correct with the 1.6 BIOS? I want to use the microphone input on the motherboard, but the the TBSC for output.Quote

It was fixed with BIOS v1.3. I use an SB Live! and the onboard sound card, too.
It was not driver dependent, the BIOS disabled the sound card that is behind the ISA bridge.
How can I say that? ISA bridge? There ain't no stinking ISA slot on this mobo!
Look at this listing that I obtained under Linux, particularly the devices labelled
as 00:11.0 and 00:11.5.

The numbers are BB:DD.FF (BB - bus number, DD - device number, FF - function or subdevice) Function number 00 means it's a main device, function numbers other than 00 with the same
bus and device number is something on or behind the main device.
With BIOS v1.2 and lower, 00:11.05 was not in the list when the SB Live! was plugged in.
The BIOS disabled the device. Or did not keep the info about it - it's almost the same since
Linux also use the PCI BIOS calls to detect the devices. I did not try "direct" mode that
talks directly to the PCI bridge. -
Sound problems (load_state:1608: No soundcards found)
Hey there!
I am having troubles with my sound devices. It was running very well until yesterday when I did pacman -Syu. Unfortunatelly I can't remember which packages have been upgrade exactly... :-/
The first hint of a problem is that the alsa daemon is giving me this error message:
[root /etc/rc.d]# ./alsa start
:: Restoring ALSA Levels [BUSY]
/usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1608: No soundcards found... [FAIL]
[root /etc/rc.d]#
My soundcard is the SupremeFX II Audio Card which came with the Asus Motherboard Maximus Extreme.
Like the wiki told me the following information might be helpful:
[root /etc/rc.d]# lsmod|grep '^snd' | column -t
snd_hda_codec_analog 83184 1
snd_seq_dummy 3540 0
snd_seq_oss 36224 0
snd_seq_midi_event 8592 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 64640 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device 8324 3 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_hda_intel 31208 1
snd_hda_codec 82000 2 snd_hda_codec_analog,snd_hda_intel
snd_pcm_oss 47328 0
snd_hwdep 9944 1 snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm 90808 3 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 25344 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 10752 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
snd_mixer_oss 20976 2 snd_pcm_oss
snd 76712 11 snd_hda_codec_analog,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_oss
[root /etc/rc.d]#
To me, this looks ok. Am I right?
Now the next thing, ls -l /dev/snd, which is a bit weird. I did this a few mintues ago and everything seemed to be okay. There were some devices similar to the output here http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Adv … are_loaded. I thought I might give OSS a try and installed it with pacman -S oss. I edited /etc/rc.conf accordingly but it didn't work. So I decided to prefer solving the problems with alsa. I did "pacman -Rs oss" which removed both before installed packages "kernel26-headers-2.6.32.7-1" and "oss-4.2_2002-2". I changed /etc/rc.conf again back to the state before the oss installation. And now, there is nothing left in /dev/snd:
[root /home/user]# ls -l /dev/snd
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 Feb 3 12:05 by-path
[root /home/user]#
I also can't load the modules manually as described on the wiki page.
[root@QX9450 /home/mm]# modprobe -v snd-hda-intel
[root@QX9450 /home/mm]# modprobe -v snd-pcm-oss
[root@QX9450 /home/mm]# ls -l /dev/snd
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 Feb 3 12:05 by-path
[root@QX9450 /home/mm]#
What can do now? Perhaps it would already be helpfull to know which packages have been upgrade by pacman -Syu. Is that possible, somehow?
This is really important to me as no sound is a total pain in the ass... Especially as I have nearly no time to play around with these things because I have a lot private stuff going on... so please, help me if you can.
Thanks a lot!Dear yvonney
In any application I can freely choose between ALSA or OSS drivers. I can hear sound in each configuration without having to unload or uninstall neither ALSA nor OSS modules.

Best regards!

I have troubles with midi initialisation. I use SB Live and ALSA drivers. mp3/wav/ogg playing so good, but I can't load midibank into SB with awesfx-0.5.d (and awesfx-0.4.4 too) from http://www.alsa-project.org/~iwai/awedrv.html
May be exist another way for midi bank load?

Please help me configure properly midi.
Thanks! My soundcard does not support MIDI being an onboard card. But I've used timidity to along with alsa's MIDI routing capabilities to play MIDI files. Timidity acts like a MIDI playback engine by providing patch banks. First, load the snd_virmidi ALSA module. Then, execute timidity in daemon mode as so
timidity -iA
Then, use aconnect to determine the MIDI virtual connection port.
aconnect -o

0 'VirMIDI 1-0 '

In my case, the output port will be 128:0
Now, you need to connect a virtual MIDI IN port to this out port. So use aconnect to view IN ports like so.
aconnect -i
client 0: 'System' [type=kernel]
0 'Timer '
1 'Announce '
client 20: 'Virtual Raw MIDI 1-0' [type=kernel]
0 'VirMIDI 1-0 '
client 21: 'Virtual Raw MIDI 1-1' [type=kernel]
0 'VirMIDI 1-1 '
client 22: 'Virtual Raw MIDI 1-2' [type=kernel]
0 'VirMIDI 1-2 '
client 23: 'Virtual Raw MIDI 1-3' [type=kernel]
0 'VirMIDI 1-3 '
I'm going to use port 20:0. So to make the connection, run...
aconnect 20:0 128:0
You will notice timidity will recognize the connection. Now, you can use a MIDI capable client to play MIDI files using timidity as the sound engine. One such application is seq24.
If you just want to play a MIDI file, all you need is
timidity myfile.mid -
ARD 1.2-Keychain-10.3.X cannot connect
Hi... I am in a university lab with 42 iMacs G4, with OSX 10.3.8. The teacher's iMac has ARD 1.2. The students use their university account to login to iMacs. As a regular user of the lab I set up the computers in my account to access st. iMacs using ARD. It worked fine from Feb 2006 to now. Still works OK for me.
However, the problem now is that a new user (new teacher) cannot set up computers using his account or even a administrator's account on the teacher's iMac. Previous users can also still set up - it is only new users using ARD for the first time cannot set up.
Searching this Forum it appears Keychain could be the culprit. The tech guys are currently testing the server and client systems by going back to previous versions of 10.3. So far they have found that SERVER 10.3.2 with CLIENT 10.3.3 will allow new users to set up computers in ARD 1.2.
They will actually go through each version and test - so good of them - but are there any pointers or comments more experienced ARD and server users here can advise, please?
Is this a previously known issue?
BTW - we cannot upgrade to 10.4 due to lease of iMacs ending in 2008 whereupon we will lease new Intel iMacs.
Michael
PowerBook 12 inch Rev A Mac OS X (10.4.8) lives with iMac RevA, PowerBook 540c, and a Newton 2000problem solved but unsure how - it was something to do with the Keychain and ARD 1.2 . If I can get the technician to sit down and go through the solution with me (as I would like to know, of course) I will post a summary later.

P.S. I use my mother board sound card
Last edited by Crazypu (2007-04-16 16:51:10) -
Hi all,
I am trying to get an SBLive soundcard which I have recently installed to work. I have a Gigabyte motherboard (NForce4) with onboard sound (AC97) which I have disabled. The SBLive has been used by me in another machine and works fine.
All the correct modules seem to load:
$ lsmod | grep snd
snd_seq_oss 33408 0
snd_seq_midi_event 6400 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 51984 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_pcm_oss 50848 0
snd_mixer_oss 17920 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_emu10k1 121892 0
snd_rawmidi 21152 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_ac97_codec 95136 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_ac97_bus 2176 1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm 84100 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec
snd_seq_device 7436 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi
snd_timer 22148 3 snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 8840 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
snd_util_mem 3840 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_hwdep 7712 1 snd_emu10k1
snd 49124 11 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,
snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_seq_device,snd_timer,snd_hwdep
soundcore 8160 1 snd
But there is nothing in /proc:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
--- no soundcards ---
Alsamixer bombs out with a unsurprising (in light of above) error:
$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
lspci shows the device:
$ /usr/sbin/lspci -v | grep -i audio
01:07.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 05)
The wierd thing is that when I first installed it, I got these same sort of errors and symptoms, but then I updated the system with pacman, getting the latest udev (087-1) and kernel (2.6.15.6-2), after which I rebooted, and got sound! There was a /proc/asound/card0 entry, tested xmms and Doom3, all was fine. But a subsequent reboot resulted in the above symptoms again, and I have rebooted about 3 or 4 times since then (just in case!), but with no joy.
I have tried running /etc/start_udev with no result. I have also tried both forcing snd_emu10k1 in /etc/rc.conf, and disabling it and manually loading it later.
I was wondering if there is something basic I am neglecting?
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance,
RobHi all,
I've managed to nail this one (I hope - I'll be checking /proc/asound/cards for several reboots now!)
A recurring entry in /var/log/kernel.log aroused my suspicion:
Mar 15 16:12:22 aquilonia ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:01:07.0 disabled
Mar 15 16:12:22 aquilonia EMU10K1_Audigy: probe of 0000:01:07.0 failed with error -5
Which prompted me to move the soundcard to another PCI slot. Now when I `cat /proc/asound/cards`, I get:
0 [Live ]: EMU10K1 - SBLive! Platinum [CT4760P]
SBLive! Platinum [CT4760P] (rev.5, serial:0x80401102) at 0xc000, irq 17
Sound now works (xmms is streaming from WickedKarma as I type 8) ), and it's survived two reboots so far!
I hope this helps anyone else who has a similar issue.
Regards,
Rob -
Hwd -s....what happened?
I got the new hwd update the other day and its not detecting alot of my modules or devices. when I do a hwd -s I get:
CPU & Cache: Processor 0 is AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2000+ 1658MHz, 256 KB Cache
/etc/hwd/SysFILE: line 12: PS/2: No such file or directory
/etc/hwd/SysFILE: line 21: 845C: command not found
Soundcard : No sound card
/etc/hwd/SysFILE: line 12: PS/2: No such file or directory
/etc/hwd/SysFILE: line 21: 845C: command not found
Video : No X
the version before this found my sound and video no problems. It's not giving me any problems now because I've run it before the update, but I can imagine the confusion and complications a newbie would have with this ouput.
/etc/hwd/SysFILE: line 12: PS/2: No such file or directory
whats that all about? I get the same errors on another computer.Maybe I should file a bug report. I tested it on 2 machines running archlinux.
I will post the output :

Al nics are PCI so that should not be a problem I guess, machines are up to date as well. -
Ableton Live 9.1.7 instruments cause kernel panics
Hello,
only whenever I use an internal instrument in Ableton, my computer goes kernel panic.
My libraries are outside the internal SSD (I have them on a 2 TB WD MyPassport Ultra), and the DAW is into the SSD. I always keep connected them while using the software.
I usually use a Saffire Pro 24 DSP as audio device, but whether it is connected or not, kernel panic comes up.
Here I have three examples of kernel panics. I have noticed that there are similarities, that I have marked in bold red, in particular in the kernel traps, part of whose locations are the same. I also marked in bold black the important things I think they may refer to my issues.
This one happened on 26th January (I was NOT using my Saffire interface):

Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3 and Dazzle 170
Hi, I have a trouble.
I'm working with: Vista Home Premium 32 Bit, Dazzle DVC 179 Rev.1.2, PCLEUSB2, Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3. I work with Firewire 1394 with Sony Pd100 Camcorder, and and Encoder 3 sounds well (PAL), with USB cam Encoder 3 sounds well (PAL), when I choice Dazzle from the menù, Encoder 3 tell to me: VIDEO FORMAT NOT SUPPORTED - Video format provided by video capture device is not supported by this application. (PAL or NTSC or SECAM).
What can I do for work with this device?
Thanks in advance
VittorioFMLE will work with all devices which have direct show based drivers and give data in raw format. Here is a list of devices which have been tested and certified with FMLE - http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/flashmediaencoder/FMLE_DeviceMatrix3.0.pdf

I have an HP Ext dvd drive (EXT MB CRADLE P07456 CNU402170K, 4K0412 Rev V1.01) but I can't plug into HP elitebook 840, please assist on how can I use this drive thanksregards
I think the device you are looking at is the Multibay external caddy to use with a mutibay dvd drive. I don't think for a price of ten dollars or pounds or euros you are getting the Multibay device and the drive. No, the netbook does not have the usb+ port with a round plug next to the rectangular usb plug. However, that extra plug in is only needed on certain older units like the tc1100 and tc4200 pen tablets in order to boot from the external drive. The usb+ cable can be replaced with a standard usb A to B cable as with a printer or a mini-usb cable with an ordinary usb connector on the other end. Your netbook is set to boot from a regular usb external drive so you should be able to make full use of the drive without the usb+ connection. If you are actually getting the external box and the external drive for a "tenner" as you say then that is a very good deal. The mutibay externals I have worked with actually came with two alternate cables; a usb+ and an ordinary usb so just ask the seller very specifically if you are getting the unit in the original sealed HP box. If you are not getting the drive you can probably find just the drive for maybe another tenner or 20 dollars us if you can live with a dvd/cd burner combo and a dvd burner is going to be more like another 50 dollars so the mini-external usb dvd burner drive will start to look good by comparison.

In addition, I'm writing from a previous Arch install witch is working fine, so all plugs and wires are OK.
Question : why ethernet is down and how correct the live CD ?
Thank you for your help.

Getting new file server. Special considerations for Revit?
Hi all,
My office (small architecture firm) is looking to purchase a new file server. Our current one is a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006). We're Mac based and use VMWare Fusion on most workstations for our Autodesk Software. I use Bootcamp on mine. My employer is under the impression we can use a $500 Mac Mini as a replacement file server for our 10 person office, ~1tb of data, and website. We have a separate Mac Mini for email. Are there any hardware considerations I should make them aware of since we use it for Revit central models? I have a vague understanding of what hardware is prioritized for individuals workstations, but not for the file server where our central models live."One node is a DC, the other is a member server. "
Sounds like you should pick one of the many documents/videos available from TechNet or Microsoft Virtual Academy instead of CBT Nuggets. They are giving you bad information. You cannot cluster DCs. It's that simple. Cluster
nodes have to be members of a cluster.

Archiso-live-2009-12-08 live CD not usable
I have recently downloaded the archiso-live-2009-12-08 live CD but I am unable to use it. I did a md5 check of the iso, and that is ok. It boots into something that remotely resembles a desktop. I have a Nvidia 9600GT graphics card for which X installs/configures the 'nv' driver, but the desktop is not configured correctly. I have a Logitech wireless mouse which I thought might be the cause, so I rebooted with a ps2 mouse, but that was even worse. Safe graphics mode (vesa) works fine.

pretty standard, I would say CPU is a E7400 (2.8GHz Core2Duo). Memory (RAM) is 3GB.
I have a Kubuntu 9.10 install and the mouse/graphics works flawlessly on that, so the problem is not hardware related.
BTW ctrl-alt-F1 gives me a usable command prompt, so the problem seems to be X.

So my guess would be that you are at the moment left with the vesa driver, except you installed nvidia drivers yourself.
It's definitely the 'nv' driver, and installed by default, just checked. The only way I can use the CD is to select 'safe graphics mode' on startup which gives me the 'vesa' driver, which is better than nothing. I also removed the 9600GT graphics card and tried the onboard graphics (Intel 82G33/G31 Express), with no problems.
Rather strange.
