All test OK for playback. But SynthA (item ) is much louder than the others. Also playing MIDI scores SynthA does NOT read some text marks, like the volume (ff, pp) instead plays volume uniformly loud ignoring volume (velocity) notations but accepts for ex. tempo notation.
What is the difference between the devices (for example SynthA vs. SynthB)? Where can I find a good explanation how these devices suppose to work, how SbLi've reads Midi instructions in scores etc.
In playing Midi scores I wish to use my own soundfonts (sf2) which are generated by downloading existing ones and modifying them. Is there a limit for their size in SbLi've! Value board?

I have an SB Audigy (not the Value edition); and I have the same available MIDI devices (except the 'Kontakt Player', which is probably a software synthesizer that you installed)
I think the SynthA and SynthB should behave similarly because you can select one or the other (in SB AudioHQ - SoundFont - Options - Soundfont Device). I haven't been playing MIDI files for sometime, and it's good you mentioned that it doesn't read some text marks (I didn't know about this... but I don't compose MIDI music... so it doesn't matter that much to me)
The SWSynth is Creative's software synthesizer, I suppose (the SynthA and SynthB are hardware synthesizers -- check them using DXDiag.exe which will list these devices and their capabilities).
MIDI port is if you have a MIDI device and cables connected to the MIDI port (I don't have a MIDI keyboard so I'm guessing...)
The MS Software Synthesizer is Microsoft's DLS Software Synthesizer... and I think it occupies some amount of memory and CPU time (ie. probably more than if using Creative's built-in synthesizers). It's possible that Microsoft's synthesizer is the de facto synthesizer for playing sound (esp. for other sound cards that don't have a MIDI hardware wavetable synthesizer).

My soundcard does not support MIDI being an onboard card. But I've used timidity to along with alsa's MIDI routing capabilities to play MIDI files. Timidity acts like a MIDI playback engine by providing patch banks. First, load the snd_virmidi ALSA module. Then, execute timidity in daemon mode as so
timidity -iA
Then, use aconnect to determine the MIDI virtual connection port.

You will notice timidity will recognize the connection. Now, you can use a MIDI capable client to play MIDI files using timidity as the sound engine. One such application is seq24.
If you just want to play a MIDI file, all you need is
timidity myfile.mid

MIDI playback quality in Windows and "as inteded

Hi,?since the days of Windows 95 and OPL3 playback on SB6, AWE32, ect. I'm confronted with the problem that MIDI files, from games for example, sound differend in Windows (MediaPlayer, ect.) than they sound in the game itself or in pure DOS 6 environment with a Soundblaster playback program. Is there a way to playback the old MIDI files with hardware OPL3 and Windows as they where inteded to?Thanks!

Have you tried all different MIDI playback devices (HW/SW Synths) you have listed there to select from (Windows Audio settings)?

Midi playback problem

Hi,
I am new to logic, maybe it's a very simple problem.
what I want to do is to play back a midi file which I recorded in Ableton Live before.
I recorded it in NO quantization mode in Live, there are some overlapped notes.
the problem in Logic is it sounds totally different !
the note length is wrong, and a lot of my notes are ignored, I searched here and guess maybe it's because the overlapped notes or Logic has some auto snap/quantize function ?
in short, I hope it sounds like what I recorded before, how to turn off all these auto fix things?

Sound Blaster PCI64 MIDI playback er

Hi!
When I start my computer a window opens, the window says: "The Creative Sound Blaster PCI64 driver cannot load MIDI waveset. MIDI playback has been disabled."
Does anyone knows what I have to do to make this window dissapear and enable MIDI playback again?

Monitoring 2 External Midi devices at playback

Hi, I'm a "Newbie," I have a MAC G5, Logic Express 7.1, a MOTU 828
(first generation) and 2 external midi devices (Triton Extr, and a Roland JV 880) I
can only monitor one of the devices at a time at playback - wichever channel
I have chosen in the MOTU preferences.
I know it was a challenge to set up Cubase to monitor both at the same time.
Is it possible in Logic Express?

Couple of things I don't understand about your question.
Are you running Vienna Ensemble on a separate computer? If not, why not use it as an AU plugin? If you have it installed on the same computer as Logic there would be no need to treat it as an external instrument. If you are running it on a separate machine double check the audio and MIDI hardware connections, drivers for both interfaces, Apple Audio/Midi Utility settings, environment, and finally the settings on your ext instrument (in the track.)
You mention being unable to hear VE when bouncing, but then you also mention that there is no signal from those tracks showing on the master fader. Is this specifically a problem when bouncing, or are you basically unable to hear and see signal from your VE tracks while recording, playing, mixing?
If VE runs smoothly from another computer (presumably to ease the burden on your main cpu) and you are able to hear it and see it at the master outputs just as you expect, and you ONLY have a problem when bouncing, then your solution is simple. Make sure that you bounce in "realtime" mode when including external instruments or fx. "Offline" mode will not include them.
Sorry if I'm covering stuff you know and have already tried; hopefully some portion of this info will help you.

VB6 Using MCI Commands to Select MIDI Output Device for Playback in Windows 8.1

I have written a MIDI Player program in VB6 that uses the multimedia control. In Windows 8.1, I understand that midimapper is no longer available so the third party softwares which can set the output devices for MIDI do not work as they did for
Vista and Windows 7. I found this Microsoft example code that selects sound cards using MCI code and was able to modify the code to show me the MIDI output devices. In particular I need to output to a USB to MIDI cable. Can this code be modified
to do just the PLAY function for midi out to the USB to MIDI cable? I do not need the record side of the program. Here is the MS article number since I can not post the link to the the VB6 program: q182799
With a modified code to play midi, I can then pull the necessary code into my MIDI Player Program. Thank you for the help on this.

Strange volume swells in DLSMusicDevice, general midi playback, since Lion upgrade

Hi all,
Like many people, I upgraded to Lion when it first came out, and overall, everything's been working great. I'm a composer though, so I make frequent use of Sibelius. My problem isn't specific to Sibelius, so don't worry if you don't have experience with it. My problem seems to be with the OS-bundled DLSMusicDevice that, together with the Quicktime Music Synthesizer, is used to playback general midi. Ever since upgrading, playback volume seems to swell randomly, from low to high, making playback of my compositions extremely irritating since it won't play at a constant, consistent volume. Is there anyone else experiencing this? If the DLSMusicDevice is the problem, is there any way to reinstall it without reinstalling the OS? I'm trying my luck with this issue both here and on the Sibelius forums, just in case. Thanks for your help!

That is unusually small sound by attached plug-in of DLS music device,
on sequence softwares, and playback SMF file with Quick time and finder.
I tried MacOSX ver. 7.0 to 7.2 with installed to external USB hard disk,
but there aren't improvement.
And It heard for me peculiar limiter effect sound, by listening carefully.
I've been searched that some one encountered status like my problem, with posted in japanese Apple communities, from July.
But, no body replied to now.
So, I searched english sites with my poor english abilities, and I found your contents.
My environment is :
Macbook pro (late 2008, 2.4GHz Core2Duo, 8GB RAM)
Logic Express 9 and Metro (is music sequencer)
I expect fixed this problem in near days, by update OSX version, or i'll find any other answer for it.
If I leave this distress, I will announce about it.

Audigy Value: "Device Control" tool: what does it

Hello. Just bought an Audigy Value and I would like to try 24 bit sound. I found this tool that came with the drivers and tools named "Device Control". I can change from 6 bits to 24 bits and change from 48khz to 96khz there. But I don't know what is changing... recording, playback? I read the help file that came with the program but it does not help. Can you tell me where do I notice a change when I change the settings within the "Device Control" ? Thanks!

This error is because the order of your numerator is higher than the order of the denominator of your transfer function. This is an impossible physical situation and leads to a delta function and its derivatives in the output response. Physically realizable systems must have the order of the denominator in the transfer function greater than the order of the numerator.

Midi playback, Audio Input tracks, record limit

I just bought logic express and Im having a few problems.
1. I like to do live recording and Im using an Alesis multimix 16 firewire mixer. I checked into Logic express's specs and it says it can handle 12 input tracks, but if I try to arm more than 9 of my firewire input tracks They disarm themselves. 9 is a lot but i bought it expecting to have 12 and thats important to me. any way I can get the other ones to work?
2. whenever I play my midi keyboard and record, or whenever I add loops to the software instrument tracks I get no sound on playback. ive updated my software and I cant figure out what else to do.
3. I havent tried to record a concert yet, but how long can I record without it stoping, and is there anyway I can extend that without purchasing a FW hardrive, I have a USB one but i dont know that that would help.

I can't get input audio to playback in Vista either, and it works fine in XP on the same machine. I have a X-Fi Elite pro and ALL of my inputs show as "currently unavailable" in the Vista recording devices dialog.
I'm sure Vista made it a pita for sound card companies but come on, it's been months now since release and so far the Vista drivers for X-Fi are mediocre at best and are lacking a lot of the features found on XP.
Not to mention the boxes show "Vista ready" or whatever.
Anyway a solution to this problem would be appreciated!

Why is internet midi playback no longer working on my mac?

Certain websites will not allow me to playback midi on the internet. I belive this is due to current lack of support from Quicktime. However I need this for my work. Has anyone got any workarounds? If not, how to I make a request / complaint to Apple regarding this issue?

SB Audigy 2 Value - Device In Use Prob

I have a home built PC. I have Windows XP PRO SP2. I have installed SB Audigy 2 Vlue successfully. I know it did because I can play the DVD Audio disk they included in the package. I hear sound/music from all speakers. When I try to play something from Windows Media Player 0, system sounds, AOL sounds, a store bought CD or a store bought DVD I get Device in Use message. I know I have it installed correctly from the the CD/DVD player because of the DVD Audio disk. I changed from SB Li've to this new one and can't figure it out. Any ideas? Thanks.

When you go into Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices what is listed as the default playback device? Also you may want to run the program DXdiag and run a sound test to see if everything passes. To run DXdiag go to start/run and type in DXdiag and then click ok.

Audigy 2 ZS Notebook MIDI playback problem

Hi guys, I have a following problem. I recently obtained PCMCIA SB Audigy 2 ZS Notebook. I'm running it on an older DELL Inspiron 5160, Win XP (latest possible service pack and drivers), P4 3.0GHz, 2 Gigs of RAM (max). Onboard audio SigmaTel is disabled.
I had no problem installing driver from Creative CD, playback and recording works fine. I can even play midi files in Windows Media Player. I knew I had to install drivers from CD in order to be able to use soundfonts, latest drivers do not support that.
There is the only problem - when I try to use the software keyboard in the Bank Manager, where I loaded up my sf2 banks, it does not make a sound. For writing midi songs, I used to use old MidiSession program. I can't hear anything there either. Strange thing is, when I play any midi file in the Widows Media Player - at the exact same time, both things mentioned above work, keyboard or MidiSession. I have no idea why that is. I tried to uninstall and reinstall Creative drivers and software, nothing. Since I can't update to a newer driver, I'm at loss here.
I used to have the same setup on my desktop (except the PCMCIA version) and all worked just fine.
Does anyone has any idea what could be causing this? Thanks.

? A soundfont cannot contain alle drumkits, and it is not nessecary at all. I dont know a soundfont bank wich contains a complete set of drumkits, too. There are only some soundfonts like the crysis soundfont (to big for its "bad" quality) wich have some dummy-drumkits/ entrys or slightly modified sounds for each than usual. If all drumnkits would be stored in high-quality, the soundfont would be huge... Every synth i know uses the standard drumkit, if the chosen one is not existent. This is not optimal, but it will guarantee, that the the MIDI file or Program/ game will work. The KXDrivers wont do this. SO they are not useable for General MIDI. Only for MIDIs and soundfonts fitting together. But thats not the point of General MIDI. CMSS isnt working with these drivers, too. Dolby decoding/ encoding isnt possible with them, either. These drivers are not bad, but if you want a completely working card, KXdrivers are worthless.

Midi Playback in logic 8 (not a newbie question, read please)

I got logic about a week ago and have been trying to take what i know from Protools and learn how to do the same thing in Logic. I successfully recorded to two different instrument tracks by splitting my midi controller into two different zones. Each zone outputs on its own channel. Each instrument track corresponds to the correct channel. While recording i can hear both instruments playing the samples.
NOW THE PROBLEM, (and it is a very big one at that!)
When i go to listen to playback what i just recorded does not play! I HEAR NOTHING!
The regions have been recorded and are showing midi notes, but there is no PLAYBACK
Just some other back round notes. I have recorded a couple projects already without the midi channel splitting as described above and i have had no problem with playback. It seems something i am doing in regards to midi channel splitting is messing up the playback.
Please help, very very frustrating. Thank you much...

Have you checked out your mixer for inadvertently activated mute or solo buttons, or a closed masterfader? Be sure to let the mixer show everything (with the 'reveal' buttons top right of the mixer). Also watch for a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom.

So, simply try this: close, reopen, check that the problem is there, and hit ⌘Z, then ⇧⌘Z (undo - redo). It may just work.
