SBO running on virtual server

Hi All
One of our clients is implementing virtual server , currently they are running on a x86 2003 OS machine.
Here is the question.
I am virtualizing 3 new servers, one for SAP, one for CRM and one that will be my SQL processing machine. My question goes as follows: our SAP is currently running on 32-bit SQL 2005, would I still need to keep the SQL version as 2005, or would we easily be able to move it to SQL 2008 64-bit (bearing in mind that my virtual SQL machine is Windows Server 2008 64-bit)?
Regards
Bongani

Thanks Gordon

  • Archlinux on Microsoft Virtual Server - installs but doesn't boot

    Hi all,
I'm trying to sneak Arch into our organization, but as we're very Windows-focussed it may take some time. I thought I would be able to install it as a virtual machine on our Virtual Server, but I haven't had any luck.
The system seemed to install fine, but when I restart the machine and take out the virtual CD it just sits there with a blank screen, but using 97% CPU.
Here's how I installed the system:
Physical machine: Core II Duo 2GHz running Windows Vista 32-bit, with 2GB memory and a 120GB IDE drive.
    1) Setup a virtual machine - it has 256MB memory, and a 100GB dynamically-expanding IDE virtual hard disk.
    2) Attached the Don't Panic 2007.08 BASE ISO to the Virtual Machine, and started her up.
    3) Started the installer with arch ide-legacy. This is because I've run through this install a few times now and without this option it complains that it can't read from /dev/null a lot and that it has trouble writing to VHD.
    4) Did an auto-prepare and selected all of the defaults to partition the virtual hard disk.
    5) Selected all of the base packages and installed them.
    6) Did the "configure system", and left everything as the defaults except setting the root password.
    7) Installed the kernel, again leaving the defaults in the config file.
    8) Installed the bootloader. Last time I used GRUB, but it sat there saying it was installing for over 2 hours. This time I tried LILO and it installed in less than a few seconds.
After all that was done I exited the installer and did a reboot. Now it sits at 97% CPU usage constantly and shows nothing but a blank screen. Using ALT+F1-F5 shows nothing.
Microsoft Virtual Server has support for the Red Hat and other distributions so I would have expected ArchLinux to work. Has anyone else had success in getting Arch to run on Virtual Server? And is there anything I did wrong in my installation?
    Cheers,
    Paul

Well, according to this virtual pc 2004 supports archlinux 0.7.1 and 0.7.2 .
They claim virtual server 2005 uses the same core as virtual pc 2004 , so it should work.
Try installing with one of the previous isos, see ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/iso .

  • CSA & Virtual Server Admin

    ALOHA FRIDAY -
I have CSA agents installed on servers that are running MS virtual server. When I go to the web site on the server to admin the virtual machines, it cannot run and in CSA gets an error of "remote application" has tried to set registry keys. I would permit the writes to the registry, but don't know what application to write them for.
How do I troubleshoot something like this? It says I can't do a behavior analysis. Thanks!

  • 11g Xe wishlist--- virtual server licensing

Currently XE is licenced with a maximum of one instance per server. If it was permitted for an instance to be run per virtual server, there would be a greater chance of uptake for hosted interent application/sites.
Maybe some restriction that such instances should not act as a single application (ie must either be controlled/adminstered by different organisations or should run different applications).
So Company ABC could run one XE Discussion/Support Forum and one XE Timesheet system on different virtual servers which may share a single hosted physical system with Company XYZ's Timesheet system.

    "1. Express Edition is limited to a single instance on any server;
    2. Express Edition may be installed on a multiple CPU server, but may only be executed on one processor in any server;"
That's not the question. The implication from the above is that a server is something that contains CPUs (ie a physical computer). If that one chunk of computer hardware is running multiple XE instances, then it is a violation of the licence. It would seem irrelevant whether it does so by using some other piece of software that calls itself a VM.
If you had a setup that segregated VMs by CPU, you may be able to get away with claiming that your 4 CPU box is actually 4 servers occupying a single box and can run 4 XE instances.
But a conventional VM setup, where multiple VMs could run using a single processor, would be limited to one XE instance.

  • Getting Virtual Server ID within OS running on guest VM

    Hi,
If I login to OVM Manager and look at the info that is shown for a Virtual Server (under the info tab), there is a ID field.
I want to get this ID from within the OS running on one of the guest VMs. Could you let me know how can this be done? Which command can I use?
    Regards,
    Vinay

I have never installed the EM agent on Dom0. I always taken the approah of install in the EM agent on the guest and then attaching the VM Manager to EM. Thus, you get the performance stats of the guest themselves and the performance stats of the VM Servers themselves. I know it works. I'm doing it now. I do have collect issues from time to time and its more prevalent on some hardware than it is others.

  • Need to know if Firefox 6 is compatible with Citrix XenApp Server 6 running on Windows Serve r2008 R2 virtualized on a VMWare environment. Thanks in advance!

We are setting up a new environment for a client based on Citrix XenApp Server 6 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 which is virtualized on a VMWare hypervisor. Client uses Firefox and we need to know if it is going to work or not. If not, what is the root cause (i.e. XenApp, Windows Server 2008 R2, virtualization).
    Thanks again! :)

I only ask because, in the past we were able to install a related product, InDesign CS5 in Citrix. In fact, Adobe had published documentation for doing exactly that: here. I just haven't seen anything similar for Illustrator CS6 and wanted to check.

  • Hyper-V Question -- Running Hyper-V or VMWare on a Windows Virtual Server

So my research tells me there likely is not a way to do this, but I think someone must have run into it before or there has been a previous need.
We have recently had two Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard virtual machines created for our use in our data center.  We are using them to run a series of web scanning and monitoring tools.  We want to run these tools within various Windows OS environments
with different combinations of browsers/applications/etc, making VMs the obvious way to go (preferably multiple VMs per virtual server).  I don't know much about the virtual data center here, but when I try to enable Hyper-V, the system tells me it is
running and cannot run within itself.  Likewise, if I try to install VMWare, it tells me it is not compatible with Hyper-V.
This may be akin to asking for Inception, but is there a way around it?  Does anyone know of a way to run a VM inside a virtual server, or does anyone see an alternate solution?  So far the only one I've come up with is to requisition physical
servers, install Windows Server 2012 on each, and then use a single level of either Hyper-V or VMWare to create the virtual machines we need.
    Any information is greatly appreciated.

I think you might be missing something here.
You have Server Standard installed on the Bare metal.  Then you add the Hyper-V Role.  Then you open the Hyper-V Management Console and you begin creating VMs.
You do not add the Hyper-V Role within a virtual machine (VM).
The same process goes for VMware (ESX) - You install ESX on the bare metal, then you open the manager and you create VMs.
Now, if all you have are two VMs (which your first statement sounds like) you cannot enable Hyper-V in the VMs and then run nested VMs in that VM.  This just does not work today.
XenServer can do this in a real way, but only with x86 paravirtualized Linux machines.  And ESX can do this with some very specific emulation settings - and at that your eyes probably just glazed over.
To do this right, you need the physical machines.

  • Running OEID on a virtual server

    Hi,
Has anyone tried running OEID on a virtual server?
If so, could you let me know what your experience was like?
We are in the middle of changing over to new servers and was wondering what the feasibility of using virtual servers were.
    Thanks,
    Will

Whilst not directly answering your question, I wanted to make sure that you are aware of Endeca Information Discovery VM appliance http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/endeca/downloads/eid-vm-1968135.html  .
It's an all-in-one image for testing-purposed only and not for production, but it may help you with your evaluation.

  • Running FMS on Virtual Server

    Hi,
I'm trying to run FMS 2.0.4 on Centos 4.3 on a VPS. It can
install fine, contrary to many CentOS users I read about on the
forum. However, when I start it, I seem to lose all connectivity
whatsoever. Very weird. I have tried countless tcpdumps and lsof
and netstat and after days of debugging I still cannot find the
    problem.
I am wondering if someone else has experienced the same
problem as me, and what did you do to fix it.
    Thank you anyone :))

IF you want to run the Forms from the IDS, installed on the Developer's PC, then you use the default OC4J that comes with it.
On the developer's PC, you can go to the $ORACLE_HOME/install/portslist.ini to check which port number your HTTP server is.
In the Forms runtime preferences you use http://localhost:{port number}/forms/frmservlet
On the developer's PC you then run "Start OC4J" to start the HTTP server, once the server is started then you try again running your Form from the builder.
Don't confuse Application Server with IDS which has its own OC4J, the first one runs on the server and the latter on a developer's PC.
Why don't you want developers to use their own OC4J?

  • Can I use the search engine and run a web application under the same iPlanet 6.0 virtual server?

I've got an iPlanet 6.0 SP2 virtual server with the search engine enabled, which was tested and working. I then deployed a web application to it (mapped to "/"), and the web application works fine but now the search functionality is completely broken. Browsing to /search results in a directory index being displayed. Is there some trick to getting the two working together? I tried shuffling NameTrans directives around, but can only get either the search or the web app working, not both.

Ok, I'm going to answer my own question now...
The issue has been resolved after some additional experimentation on my part. There were two causes for my problem:
    1. The NameTrans directives in obj.conf are in the wrong order when Java and Search are enabled from the administration interface.
Here's the admin server generated obj.conf I started with initially, when the web application was working, but requests to the URI "/search" returning a 404 error:
    <Object name="default">
    NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/search-ui" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/plugins/search/ui" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/mc-icons" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/ns-icons" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/manual" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/manual/https" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="es-search-nametrans" from="/search"
    NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
    NameTrans fn="document-root" root="$docroot"
    </Object>
Here's my obj.conf now, which works perfectly:
    <Object name="default">
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/search-ui" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/plugins/search/ui" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/mc-icons" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/ns-icons" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/manual" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/manual/https" name="es-internal"
    NameTrans fn="es-search-nametrans" from="/search"
    NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
    NameTrans fn="document-root" root="$docroot"
    </Object>
The "servlet" NameTrans directive needs to go below all others which map a URI to a function or directory (but before "document-root"), or they break. This is consistent with the iPlanet documentation on NameTrans, but the admin server doesn't get it right!
    2. The developer who wrote the web application uploaded a directory named "search" in the root of his application, which caused the server to display a directory index of "/search", instead of executing the search function. I believe this issue is covered in an iPlanet knowledge base article.

  • How to restart a virtual server in WS7

Does anybody know host restart a virtual server without restarting the whole instance?
    Thanks.

you can run 'bin/reconfig' - this will make any changes (that does not require a restart) available to the running server (this includes all virtual servers configured within this server instance) without requiring a restart - i mean without any downtime
no, there is no way to make dynamic reconfig work only for a single virtual server. but i guess, what you care most is - ability to modify a setting for a virtual server without disturbing other virtual servers - 'bin/reconfig' is probably what u r looking for.

  • Server 2012 Hyper-V locks up Virtual Server for no reason.

Server 2012 Hyper-V locks up virtual servers for no reason.
This is a production server. I began building this server in February. I installed the server in November. 2012 server R1 is full of bugs!
First who was the rocket scientist that decided that the TURN OFF function in Hyper-V means "Please turn off when the
F*#@$*% you feel like it"? Idiots!
I have a Supermicro server with perfect memory (for those who want to blame this on memory).
It is running 12 Virtual Servers. Every morning, at a random time, at least 1 of the servers lock up solid. Sometimes as many as 5 decide that for no reason they all want to lock up. The servers that lock up may be 1 or more: a database server, a terminal
server, an exchange server, a Windows 8.1 Ent VDI server, an IIS server, and or AD server. All 2012 R1.
They are running all current Microsoft and other vendor patches and hardware updates.
The only common denominator is the Hyper-V server.
I cannot shut them down using the Hyper-V manager. I cannot turn them off. I have a hundred users standing by while I nicely ask them to turn off. The VM will turn off after 20 minutes and a lot of gentle coaxing.
I cannot Kill the vmwp.exe process associated with the locked Virtual Machine.
No .DMP are created. No events in the event viewers. No reason at all. When they restart, there is no indication of a problem.
I ran two VMWP dumps and posted it here.
    www.a1bcs.com/hyper-vlockup.zipx
Does anyone know why these are locking up?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Robert

I'm not positive of the cause but I was able to stop the problems.
It turned out that Network Load Balancing (NLB) between the two terminal servers and another between the two gateways was causing the lockups.
This is a normal configuration and it should work. Especially since Microsoft has seen fit to remove the DRAIN USERS function from RDP as well as the LOCK OUT till next reboot function. JUST FYI these functions are still available at a DOS prompt
by using the CHGLOGON command. But still the NLB also provides these functions.
Anyhow, once I removed the NLB I haven't had the lockups anymore.
That doesn't however change the fact that TURN OFF should mean TURN OFF not turn off please!
    Thanks again,
    Robert

  • Need help in creating virtual server

    Hi
I have configured the sun ONE portal server to run on a domain p1.test.com. A default virtual server with the listen socket is existing for this virtual server. But now I need to access the portal with another domain name p1.test.co.in. I have tried creating another virtual server but it is not working. Please help me in creating the virtual server. For the "urlhost", whether I have to specify the original machine name or new domain name. Please help me in this issue.
    Regards
    ram

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Actually I need the same content for both the url's. The DNS entries are already for the two urls's. It is getting the login page. But after giving the credentials it dosent brings the portal desktop page (seems to be going in a loop).
I have my Sun ONE LDAP server configured with the domain "test.com". Is there any changes that I have to make in the LDAP. Please help me in this issue.
    Thank You.

  • Blue screen error after converting physical to virtual server using disk2vhd

I have used the sysinternals disk2vhd to create the c: drive from a Dell server. I was able to create a virtual server and boot but had licensing issues. After a support call and doing a repair install to change licensing I am now getting a: "a process or
thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated" after the virtual machine boots and I log on. I tried to get the integration services installed but the server wouldn't stay running long enough.
Any suggestions for resolution would be appreciated.
