SBS 2011 DNS Resolution Slow

I have a customer running SBS2011 Standard.  We've had problems with slow DNS resolute for a very long time.  When users on their workstations go to a web site in IE, it usually takes a couple of seconds to load the site.  The best example
of the problem is on Yahoo!.  When users click a link there, IE will spin for a while and then time out.  If they click on the link again, it usually loads the second time.
We recently switched internet providers and I was hoping that might resolve the issue, but it has not.  The server is up-to-date as of a month or so ago and I've run BPA and the only issue there is with WSUS Group Policy objects, which I don't care
about.  I wouldn't think this would be related to that.  There are no errors in the DNS logs.  This server was originally a clean install of a new domain, not a migration.
I have Forwarders configured and have tried using the DNS servers of the old ISP, the new ISP and OpenDNS.  No improvement with any of those changes.  On the Monitoring tab of the DNS server properites, "A simple query against this DNS server"
and "A recursive query to other DNS server" both fail every time.  If I get rid of the Forwarders, those queries still fail and DNS resolute at the clients is still slow.
I know there was a DNS issue that was reported by the BPA a while ago and I fixed that.  I think it was a registry setting that needed to be adjusted, but I can't recall the details right now.
I ran DCDIAG last night and was receiving messages about running Chkdsk to fix errors.  I was hopeful that that would fix something, but I'm no longer getting that message.  Now, the only errors in DCDIAG are SystemLog errors about not being able
to contact a machine that has been off the network for a while.
Restarting the server or just the DNS server has never helped.
My server has a PTR record in the reverse lookup zone and a static A record in the Forward Lookup Zone.
When I run NSLookup, it only responds with

Is that a helpful clue?  Where do I start with troubleshooting and/or checking settings?

I would certainly change the router, just to rule it out.
Have you run the SBS BPA and fixed any issues it highlights?
If pointing a client directly to an external DNS, improves, but does not fully resolve, i would be inclined to say the Server is 'ok' and that it may be the router at fault.
It has been too long since i looked at a ProSafe router, but there may well be some firewall settings you can tweak.

  • Primary DNS resolution slow if PDC role DC is down

    Hello,
    In my environment I'm running purely Windows Server 2012 in a two site environment.  I run a single domain infrastructure with my main site that has 2 domain controllers (one has all FSMO roles), and a second site which has a single domain controller.
     I've been looking all over the forums for a related topic, but haven't read something anything that fits my scenario.  Basically what happens is, if the DC that has FSMO roles (specifically PDC) goes offline, or if I were to turn the DNS service
    off, all devices would take forever for DNS resolution.  Another scenario (which is essentially the same) is if the VPN tunnel between the two sites goes down, all clients at site 2 would take awhile for DNS resolution.  If those clients launch their
    browser any website they go to takes 5-10 seconds to load.  They could reboot their PC, and do ipconfig /flushdns, and even though those clients DNS settings point to the DC at site 2 as primary DNS, it takes awhile.  As soon as the PDC server is
    restored everything is back to normal.  Quite frequently the VPN tunnel will go down leaving very slow responses at site 2.  Oddly enough is, if the tunnel were to go down, and I logged into the DC at site 2, if I were to ping various domains the
    response would take 5 or so seconds.  Is this normal to occur?  If not, how could I possibly remedy this?  My assumption is that, if the primary DNS were to go down, or in this case the PDC server goes down, one of the secondary servers would
    kick in.  I appreciate any light you can shed on this issue.

    I agree with Meinolf. It's not always the DNS or PDC or whatever DC is in question's, fault. A lot of it is due to the client side resolver algorithm. Here's more specifics on how the whole process works - and note that this applies to all operating systems,
    Windows, Linux, Unix, BEOS..... because they all follow the RFCs defining how client side resolvers work.

    To add on how the client resolver picks a nameserver, below is a link to a discussion that points out the following - and please note, the operative point in the first bullet point indicates "equivalent," meaning that all DNS servers you enter into a NIC,
    must all reference the same exact data, so you can't mix nameserver with different data and expect the client to try all of them.
    •by RFC, all nameservers in a zone's delegation are equivalent
    •they are indistinguishable to the client
    •clients are allowed to choose the NS to query with whichever policy they wish
    •if any picked server fails to respond (e.g. "ns3"), then the next server is picked among the remaining set (e.g. ns1 and ns2) according to the policy
    •often clients use sophisticated policies that "score" servers and pick more often the ones that replied faster
    •as a by-product, in practice this policy makes caches favor "nearest" servers

    So you have to check when the first DNS goes down, not all directory enabled apps can handle it. opened.
    Another issue is the client has bounded to the logon server during the DC Locator process. That's difficult to mess with other than restarting the machine...

  • SBS 2011 VM and Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host. After rebuilding the host image, no email is received, EMC states "You don't have sufficient permissions to view this data" when looking at organization config. Server config not shown on EMC.

    Hyper-V Host Server 2012 R2 x64 drive c:
    All VMs, including SBS 2011 Standard x64 are on drive d:
    I replaced my motherboard and defined a Marvell RAID 1 Mirror for my boot drive C:.  My drive D: containing all of my Hyper V machines remained untouched since the new MB had Intel Matrix Controller with RAID 5, as did the old MB.
    Since the C: drives are a few bytes smaller after configured as a RAID 1, I was unable to restore drive C from the image copy, so I rebuilt a new Hyper-V Host identical as possible using Server 2012 R2 x64.  I had to redefine the Hyper-V machines on
    the host, and the 1st time I brought it all (host and VMs) I had to reconfigure the NICs due to new MAC addresses, and verifying SBS 2011 DNS and DHCP for all physical and Hyper-V machines. Otherwise my Hyper-V SBS 2011 x(64) wasn't touched.
    Now the SBS Exchange 2010 is not receiving mail.  In the Exchange Management Console clicking on the Organization config gives me a highlighted error "You don't have sufficient permissions to view this data".  The Server
    Config is no longer on the EMC.  The Recipient Config looks fine.
    Outlook 2013 x64 connects to the Exchange Server, but no new mail appeared.  There were just a few older messages that came in since the last time I opened Outlook.  My public DNS on GoDaddy was not changed.  I did not change sending mail
    through my ISP Sonic.net.  The SBS internal DNS doesn't have an MX record, but I'm not sure it ever did since my GoDaddy public DNS has an MX record.
    I tried restoring to an earlier Image Copy, but that made no difference.  I'm using the Windows Backup from SBS 2011 for my daily image copy backups.

    After more research and running the Best Practices report from the EMC, I am missing a slew of ManagementRolesAndRoleGroups from the RBAC container.
    Based on your description, it seems that you have find the cause of this issue. On current situation, I still
    suggest that you should run
    SBS 2011 BPA and then check if can find some relevant errors. Just for a confirmation.

  • Problems in a hosted Lync / SBS 2011 combination

    Hi,
    The problem
    My client is using hosted Lync from Startready / lync4all in combination with their local SBS 2011 server -on premise Exchange Server-. Especially multipoint conferencing -some internal nodes / externals on PSTN, is going bad all the time with a Lync 2013 client
    as well as a Lync 2010 client. At no specific intervals internal nodes have to rejoin. Gibberish / dropped calls from the outside to nodes on the inside are happening on a regular basis.
    Our suspects for causes are:
    1. SBS 2011 Bad DNS settings on the SBS 2011 server like no correct forwarding to external dns´s, I´ll have to check that though, but I observed long times to connect to shares and wrong forwarding entries are a documented cause for long connection times on
    SBS 2011. I tried the Lync Pre-Call diagnostic tool on Lync (2010) as well as W7 and W8 non lync enabled nodes, all failed to connect which points to the SBS 2011 DNS as a cause.
    2. No STUN / edge traversal settings on clients
    3. No IGMP snooping settings, no flow control, no DiffServ implemented on either clients or the Netgear FS728TP smart switch
    4. No documentation of specific Lync settings on the Cisco ASA 5505 appliance are available, it is unsure what the supplier of the network did there. I suspect, among other things, that a session timer is screwing conference connectivity with the Lync server
    of Startready.
    5. No effort was made to effectuate Lync related settings on clients through Active Directory.
    6. Only 10/100 Ethernet connections to clients are available
    7. On the Netgear switch, turning on Flow Control, IGMP snooping and LLDP did not prevent Lync conference calls from being dropped.
    Note: I tested the connection with the Lync servers of Startready more then ten times with and without many people using the network and Voice conversations. The connection to the Lync Servers is as flawless as a WAN connection can be. Response times average
    at 11 ms with no packet loss at all, measured from an internal network endpoint. This excludes the Lync Servers of Startready as a cause and lets be fair, thousands of Startready customers are using this service every day without a glitch!
    Any help with effectuating setting on clients through Active Diredtory methods is also welcome

    From my conclusion it should be a networ related issue.
    Most Impact has the firewall, if statefull inspection is turned on for Lync traffic.
    https 443 and stun 3478 will be use for the traffic to Lync online.

  • SBS 2011 no longer issues DHCP leases: DHCP, DNS, and AD Errors

    Hi all. On early 8/13/2012 and into the morning, our UPS failed several times. The battery seems to be fine but the unit was shutting off power to the unit which means the (Windows SBS 2011 Standard) server shut off unexpectedly several times.I replaced
    the UPS.
    Now I'm trying to figure out what in the world this did to the server. It seems DHCP, DNS, and AD all have issues, as seen in the logs below. The client PC's are going offline one-by-one because the leases are expiring and it can't connect to the server
    to renew. When trying to start the DHCP service, I get a 20013 error saying it cannot be started.
    So I attempted to follow a kb article and repair the database but that didn't work because it seems the Jetpack utility is not in SBS 2011? And even at that, I'm thinking it may not even be a corrupted DHCP database due to the other errors in the event log.
    This is a small office and I only know enough to be dangerous but usually I can just follow a kb to fix any issues. But there are so many errors, this one has me stumped..   Could any Server whizzes identify the big picture here?

  • Slow DNS resolution

    Folks;
    *I have Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6 up to date and since few days, the DNS resolution is very slow, about 5 seconds to resolve names.*
    *For example :*

    *(wait 5 seconds)*
    PING test.com (205.178.152.103): 56 data bytes
    *Of course it also happen in firefox and in all other internet applications. Each time I'm loading a web page, I have to wait 5 seconds...*
    *If I try a few seconds later, it answer immediately, but a few minutes later, it take again 5 seconds to resolve the name.*
    *I'm not sure, and maybe it's just a coincidence, but it came just after the installation of Adobe Photoshop 4.*
    *I think about a virus or some mysterious mac os parameters ...*
    *I try* dscacheutil -flushcache *with no effect.*

  • SLOW SLOW SLOW SBS 2011

    Hi --
    I have an SBS 2011 Standard SP1 box that continues to be a major annoyance because of how slow and unworkable it becomes. This server is running on dual four-way 3-GHz Xeon processors, 16 GB of RAM and several terabytes of SATA-3 disk space. It is intended
    to support the needs of THREE users. Right now, it is working essentially as installed; except for the antivirus program, all it's running is software installed by the SBS installer itself. It's providing file and print and email services to three users on
    eight devices (three deskside PCs running Windows 7 Pro, two laptops (one running Windows 7 Pro, one running Windows Vista Ultimate), and three PDAs (two WM 6.5, one iPhone). And it does it dismally (except for email on Outlook and pushed to the PDAs).
    Response times on this server start out passable right after the machine is booted and go downhill from there. Opening server shares or starting a remote desktop session might be OK after the server reboots, but after it's been running for a while it becomes
    virtually impossible to get the machine's attention. Trying to open an OWA or RWA session is an ordeal no one wants to tackle. It can take one to two minutes after the user enters the URL for the challenge page to be returned from the server. And after the
    user logs in, it can take up to six minutes for the OWA or RWA landing page to be displayed. From that point, response times on these apps are awful for the duration of the session. We haven't even attempted to set up and use SharePoint on this server yet.
    The server and all other devices have gigabit connections to the LAN, with a 6 Mb pipe to the Internet.
    The longer the machine runs, the more resource-bound it becomes. On Friday night, with none of the PCs logged in and no one logged in remotely (i.e. the only activity was Exchange pushing email to the PDAs), the server was reporting from 47 to 56 percent
    of CPU usage and a staggering 95% of physical memory in use, claiming to have just shy of 600 MB of RAM unused. 45 minutes after I rebooted the server, those numbers dropped to 3% CPU usage and 3.9 GB of physical RAM in use. By Sunday afternoon -- in the middle
    of a three-day weekend during which NO ONE logged into the system -- those numbers had risen to 35% CPU usage and 9.3 GB of physical RAM in use.
    And I'm not quite sure I understand how these CPU usages are being reported, either. If I sort the process stack by CPU usage from highest to lowest, on many occasions the total CPU usage being reported does not match the individual CPU usage being reported
    by the processes. And it's not a round-off problem, or a problem of one or two percentage points. One time I took a snapshot of the Task Manager window, and the sum of the nonzero CPU usages differed from the displayed total by 21 points.
    About the only component that's working well on this server is Exchange. Whether on the internal PCs running Outlook through TCP/IP, the laptops connecting -- from anywhere -- via Outlook Anywhere, or the PDAs, mail comes and goes smoothly and promptly.
    Mail arriving into Outlook hits the PDA an instant later. A reply from the PDA is readily available in Outlook's Sent Items folder. Contact and Calendar updates immediately propagate to all pertinent devices. Just don't try to use OWA ...
    This server replaced an SBS 2003 SP2 box running on dual 1-GHz P3 processors, 2 GB of RAM and ATA-133 hard drives. That server also ran software that has not yet been installed on the new box, including the full installation of the Symantec Endpoint Protection
    Small Business suite v11 (with the SEP server component managing the PCs). The new server is only running the SEP v12 unmanaged client; I have not dared burden it with any additional software. The old server dramatically outperformed this new platform. And
    the old server also acted as the network's firewall and access control device, so it was doing more work than this new machine is doing here now ...
    I have looked high and low for an explanation for this and have not gotten anywhere. Every piece of hardware has been rigorously tested several times; none has shown any problem. To the best of my knowledge, all programs, drivers, and firmware are at the
    latest available revs and are all compatible with Server 2008 and/or SBS 2011. The server has three HP network printers installed. It has updated drivers and management software for the RAID controller, which we downloaded from the Intel site. It's running
    SEP 12.1.1000.157 RU1 (unmanaged client only). Everything else it's running is right off of the SBS 2011 installation media (plus every available update from WU).
    I've found one KB article that references the slow OWA and RWA issue (#2493361). Its solution is to install SP1 -- which this server already has.
    I need to fix this ... What is wrong with this installation?

    There is no third-party software other than the SEP package. We were having these issues before I installed the SEP client. I installed the SEP client only (not the full-blown package, v. 12.1.1000.157 RU1) after almost two weeks of running the machine with
    no antivirus protection at all, which was making me uneasy.
    And we've run the full SEP package on older SBS machines without issue. On the SBS 2011 box, we have the latest available version. All I've found that might implicate the antivirus program and explain what's happening on the machine is a reference to problems
    with TDI drivers, but the solution it presented was to install SP1. The article did say to install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, but the link to the SP1 page says to install it though Windows Update. Since this server is showing that it is running SBS 2011 Standard
    SP1, and there are no outstanding patches or fixes to install, I'm assuming that the necessary patches are already installed. But again, we've had these problems with this server even before I installed any antivirus program.
    The only other "third-party" software is the IASTOR driver and support programs for the Intel RAID controller. The original driver came from the SBS installation media. As part of the troubleshooting efforts to try to resolve the problems with this server,
    I installed an updated IASTOR driver and application that I downloaded from the Intel site (v. 10.0.0.1046).
    The three HP printer drivers all came either from the SBS installation media or from Windows Update.
    The latest chipset and motherboard support drivers were downloaded from the Intel site. This included an updated graphics driver for the on-board graphics chip that came with the download package.
    And that's it. This server has no specialized hardware. The only "extra" hardware is an external eSATA WD drive used for backups.
    The server had multiple Intel gigabit NICs, but all but one were disabled since SBS 2011 only requires (and apparently can only work with) one NIC.
    I haven't even installed Office on this server ...

  • SBS 2011 extremely slow performance

    Hi,
    Over the past few months we have been having VERY slow file and exchange access with our SBS 2011 Standard.
    Specs are: HP Proliant ML330G6 / 32GB Ram / Intel Xeon E5506 @ 2.13Ghz / Fully up to date with SP1
    Around 40 users.
    Originally we thought it may have been networking issues as the server performance itself was not so bad so we replaced the network with.
    2x HP Procurve 1410 Switches
    Sonicwall TZ200
     Now server use both remotely and physically is slow. This morning it took about 15 minutes just to get past the login screen and load the SBS console.
    Exchange management console can take up to 10 minutes to load.
    User's are experiencing major delays on saving files. (E.G Powerpoint can take up to 2 minutes to save a 2MB file)
    Outlook for all user's constantly becomes not responding and/or crashes with emails sometimes in outbox for 5 minutes before sending. Webmail is is slow internally it is not useable.
    Have ran BPA etc. spent countless days going through technet and general google articles.
    Not winning at the moment and need some ideas.

    is the machine also slow, if you login locally and try to copy stuff around on the local disk?
    If so, check the event logs for potential issues, also use resource monitor to find bottlenecks, memory leaks etc.
    Other than that: The network card drivers should be kept up to date (not always the server maker offers the most current).
    You may also check, if issues around Task Offloading or Receive Side Scaling affect the performance. To test this, you can run following commands to disable these features:
    netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled
    netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled
    eventually also
    netsh int tcp set global congestion=none

  • Slow DNS Resolution using Time Capsule

    Hello,
    I'm using a time capsule as my main internet router and wireless access point, and I've noticed a significant delay before web pages begin to download.  In trying to troubleshoot this, I came across a very helpful utilitity called the Netalyzr from Berkley.  Using this tool, I'm able to see that there is a significant delay in name lookups using the time capsule DNS proxy capability.  There's not a lot of documentation on this, but it appears that instead of handing clients the designated DNS servers configured in DHCP, it hands out its own address to the clients as the DNS server and makes the DNS request to the configured servers.  I've included the verbage from the Netalyzer tool below.
    Your ISP's DNS resolver requires 2200 msec to conduct an external lookup. It takes 81 msec for your ISP's DNS resolver to lookup a name on our server.
    This is particularly slow, and you may see significant performance degradation as a result. 
    As you can see, this causes almost a 2.5 second "pause" before the lookup is even returned.  However, if I hard code the designated DNS servers into this client (Macbook air running Lion), I get the following result.
    Your ISP's DNS resolver requires 110 msec to conduct an external lookup. It takes 81 msec for your ISP's DNS resolver to lookup a name on our server. 
    This is a significant improvement over the lookup using the proxy capabilities of the Time Capsule.  This leads me to believe that the DNS "proxying" that the time capsule is doing is really slow.
    I'm using opendns as my provider in both scenarios.
    Is this a known issue, and if so, is there an existing fix or a planned fix for this?

    Frankly I just don't believe those analysers.. not until I can prove it myself.
    Do a very simple test..
    Open terminal  and ping a website you have never opened before.
    You should do this from a PC or Mac on the network using ethernet. Just to keep crummy wireless responses out of it. And do it without internet activity going on.
    Do it a second time, and it should be instantaneous now having the address resolved and held in the cache.
    If you get a significant lag before the address is resolved to actual IP, there maybe something wrong. And the first test then would be to change the DNS server to your local ISP not opendns.. because the routing to opendns might also be an issue.
    You can also test by removing the TC from the network..plug a computer directly to the modem and just browse.. compare that to speed with the TC. I know it isn't exactly scientific but a 2.5sec delay in dns resolution you will notice it. It is important to connect to stuff that is outside your normal pattern. Otherwise it should just be in the cache.
    Otherwise it is unlikely to really exist.

  • Problem: Slow Intranet Sites/Internal DNS Resolution for only AD Users

    Hello,
    We are experiencing a very odd problem.
    Any and All Active Directory users are experiencing very slow intranet sites.
    We are a school corporation, so this is affecting our Student Information System, as it is entirely web-based and locally hosted.
    All of our Domain Controllers are Windows Server 2012 R2, with all the latest critical updates.
    All client workstations are Windows 8.1 Professional.
    The problem occurs with ALL web browsers (IE, Chrome, FF, etc)
    All DNS queries respond in <1 ms (no matter whether we are logged in as AD User or local computer user).
    If we login as local computer user, we have blazing fast intranet sites/DNS resolution.
    If we login as AD user, everything crawls again... every click on the intranet site spins and says loading for up to 15 seconds.
    If we add the the intranet site to the local computer HOST file, it is blazing fast, just as if we logged on as local computer user.
    If we take it back out of the HOST file, it drags again.
    I am totally stumped!

    If there are any public DNS IP addresses in Preferred or Alternate field, please remove them, then input these DNS entries in the Advanced section. We should only configure Domain Controllers’ IP addresses on Preferred
    and Alternate DNS server section for domain-joined machines.

  • RV082 - Slow DNS Resolution

    Greetings Gang,
    Have an RV082 v1.1 FW 1.3.98-tm that has been rock solid for a couple of years and is now, suddenly, experiencing dead crawl DNS resolution.
    No changes in configuration prior to the behavior starting. Tried rebooting the unit, no changein behavior.
    There's an internal DNS server that resolves internal resources, but everything else gets pushed to the RV082.
    I've tried Comcast, Verizon and Google DNS servers at the router level, and the results are the same -- so that rules out the DNS servers themselves.
    Change the DNS servers at the NIC level on a wrokstation, and resolution occurs quickly and reliably.
    I'm looking to reset to Factory Default and reload the configuration and likely upgrade to FW 2.0.0.19-tm or 2.0.2.01-tm but I do see similar issues reported with those firmwares, and moreover, in a mixed Mac/PC environment.
    Was wondering if anyone else has experienced these issues, could identify a root cause and resolution.

    Probably just corruption, which can happen every so often.  A couple of years in service rock-solid is really great.
    I experienced similar problems with my rv016s when my ISP changed their backend carrier equipment.  I was never able to fix the issue, so I had to reboot them every 8hrs.
    I wouldn't upgrade unless you HAVE to.  You'll more than likely run into other bugs that breaks your current configuration, even if it's just a site-to-site VPN (I've been there, done that).

  • A Global Catalog Server could not be located - All GC's are down SBS 2011

    I have been searching through these forums and manage to find similar errors but am struggling to find an answer that applies to this me.
    I seem to be having a number of issues with our SBS. I believe this was originally domain was previously on a SBS 2003 box before being moved to this SBS 2011 box last year, it has been running fine until yesterday. I cant see anything that has changed then
    though.
    Everything seems to point to DNS although I am struggling to pinpoint the actual cause. The most worrying is when I try to open something on the SBS such as AD sites and services.

    I found a few people who have had similar issues that was caused by the "netlogon" service being paused or stopped but in my case it is set to automatically start and is running.
    I have also posted this to serverfault  (cant post links yet serverfault.com/questions/522691/a-global-catalog-server-could-not-be-located-all-gcs-are-down) added as there may be info there that may help.
    Thanks for taking the time to read this, hopefully someone out there has come across this before or can offer something in regards to the next steps I should take.

    Some troubleshooting ideas:
    0. Check if the DCs can resolve each other using their DNSHostName. If not, this indicates some DNS misconfiguration
    -- you need to fix that first.
    1. Check if the both the DCs are pointing to the same DNS server (or DNS servers that are replica of each
    other). Run: "ipconfig /all" and check its output. If not, correct the DNS client settings and run dcdiag after sometime.
    2. Check if dynamic updates are "turned on" on the DNS server.
    3. Try re-registering the DCs SRV records by either restarting netlogon service or by running the following
    command: 
         nltest.exe /dsregdns

  • Migrating from SBS 2011 to Windows Server 2012R2 Standard with 365

    Im looking to move SBS 2011 to Server 2012R2 standard and with a 365 migration as well.
    Im thinking
    BPA for AD (health check)
    Add the Server2012R2 as a DC
    Ensure replication
    Move DHCP
    Change DNS
    Now this is where I get lost, now Im lost to use either dirsync or add essentials service, I have gone for standard and 30 cals with the option  as I have 28 users and the essentials service would make everything quite nice for remote access and backups
    etc....  however I don't know whether to just use dirsync with password replication instead ?
    Currently Im aiming towards getting the dc up and running then enabling essentials on the dc but I dont know how it will effect SBS and having essentials on the same network and sync'ing people to the cloud ? So Should I use DirSync on a different server
    instead to sync up to azure ?
    Finally with 365 I have only ever done a migration involving an export of pst's from an exchange box and then on a new domain with new pc's and reimport the pst's on the user accounts in outlook.
    However I have read when migrating to 365 was using exchange 2010 there was a application
    to move everything across however you needed an ssl cert iirc ? so I dont know how it works now since the nice new dashboard upgrade (assuming the tool has been updated like dirsync)
    along with the above how does AD now know where exahcnge if you use the migration app with an ssl cert and is it a case of still running the 365 config tool to configure each user to look at their mail in the
    cloud ? Also is it a good idea to enable essentials from the start of the 2012r2 dc for replication top 365 or to use dirsync ?
    then finally when replications is all good start transferring the FSMO roles over to the new DC and demote and remove the SBS server

    I’m a little confused with the description. Did you mean that set up DC (Windows Server 2012 Standard) and
    then install the Windows Server Essentials Experience role? If so, when you migrate, please refer to the article:

    I have a Server 2012 R2 core I am planning on using as my secondary DC on my domain. The primary DC is SBS 2011. Are there any issues with simply running dcpromo to add the 2012 machine as the secondary DC? Will any of the FSMO roles be moved from
    SBS as a result of promoting the machine as a DC? After running dcpromo, will the 2012 box automatically replicate my AD and DNS? This is the first time I am doing this, so I need some help....

  • Joining Windows 2012 Server to SBS 2011 Domain

    Hi All,
    I have been trying to get a new Windows 2012 Server to join a SBS 2011 domain. The error message I am getting is:
    The following error occurred attempting to join the domain: xxxx. The specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted.
    I have a bunch of other Windows 7/XP workstations that have joined successfully. I have also tried disabling TCP/IP v6 on the 2012 server and joining the domain with the netdom command. The SBS 2011 server is listed as the primary DNS server on the 2012
    server.
    What else can I try here?
