SBS 2011 no longer issues DHCP leases: DHCP, DNS, and AD Errors

Hi all. On early 8/13/2012 and into the morning, our UPS failed several times. The battery seems to be fine but the unit was shutting off power to the unit which means the (Windows SBS 2011 Standard) server shut off unexpectedly several times.I replaced
the UPS.
Now I'm trying to figure out what in the world this did to the server. It seems DHCP, DNS, and AD all have issues, as seen in the logs below. The client PC's are going offline one-by-one because the leases are expiring and it can't connect to the server
to renew. When trying to start the DHCP service, I get a 20013 error saying it cannot be started.
So I attempted to follow a kb article and repair the database but that didn't work because it seems the Jetpack utility is not in SBS 2011? And even at that, I'm thinking it may not even be a corrupted DHCP database due to the other errors in the event log.
This is a small office and I only know enough to be dangerous but usually I can just follow a kb to fix any issues. But there are so many errors, this one has me stumped..   Could any Server whizzes identify the big picture here?

  • Some SBS 2011 users having issues with s/mime messages containing attachments

We have a contact from the outside world who is obligated to send emails that have attachments as S/mime. Whenever he sends the Executive Staff here an email containing (let's say) a Microsoft Office file, they instead get an attachment named smime.p7m that
contains a winmail.dat file or instead just get a winmail.dat file attached instead.
As someone with administrative rights (and I think that's what the deciding factor is), if he sends me the same email and I open it in my client of choice (Eudora in this case), I get the attachment he wants received and also a smime.p7m file with certificate
information in it. However, if he sends the email with me as a cc: to one of the other users, instead of recipient, I only see what the other user sees.
If I go into OWA as any of the affected users, it takes a bit of maneuvering (in that I have to click on a dialog that reads "This type of message isn't fully supported in Conversation mode.
Click here to open the full version, which may show you more details or features"), but I can eventually get to the attachment once the full version pane opens.
If get into Outlook 2010 as the user "Journaling", I can open the copy that Journaling's mailbox receives and see the attachment just fine too.
I honestly have no clue what the problem might be, and would be very grateful for any help.

  • 2008 iMac running beautifully untill recently. Screen glitches and freezing. Apple Hardware test showed error code  4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have not seen others with this code. Guessing it is a fan issue based on the ODD and HDD error codes

computer felt hot and while running apple hardware test the screen glitches covered the screen and it froze. Now computer wont boot up. Again AHT code is 4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have just seen ODD and HDD codes discussed on other threads. Those were hardrive or superdrive fans, so I am guessing this is a fan issue and then it fried by graphics card. Any help as to whether this is game over or worth repairing would be very appreciated.

You need to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for a professional evaluation. Apple does not publish the codes from AHT, you can Google the code you got and see if you can determine what it means however the best method is to let a pro handle it.

If you're burning it as an expanded image then it's probably as Malcolm suggested. The alternative is just to burn it as a data file. Then if it's a 535MB .dmg file it will fit easily onto a 700MB CD. The decompressing will only take place as and when you need it to.

  • Joining Windows 2012 Server to SBS 2011 Domain

    Hi All,
I have been trying to get a new Windows 2012 Server to join a SBS 2011 domain. The error message I am getting is:
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain: xxxx. The specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted.
I have a bunch of other Windows 7/XP workstations that have joined successfully. I have also tried disabling TCP/IP v6 on the 2012 server and joining the domain with the netdom command. The SBS 2011 server is listed as the primary DNS server on the 2012
    server.
What else can I try here?
    Thanks,
    DR.

I am having the same issue has the OP. I have my DNS settings pointing to the sbs server that hosts the domain and DNS. I am receiving the same error.

  • Adding a 2012 r2 server to an SBS 2011 network

I have an established SBS 2011 network. Remote Web Access is activated and works fine. FQDN is: server1.companyname.com
I added a 2012 r2 server (to be used as an RDS server) and have joined it to the network. Name of this server is: server2. I can access the published apps on the server from within the network by going to IE and typing https://server2/rdweb.
However, I cannot access the server from the web and although I tried a few different suggested methods from various forums, including wiping and reinstalling the OS twice, I have not been successful. I know I am missing something
very important in the setup, not sure what though. And then is the certificate issue.
Is there a step by step process that somebody can help me with, or point me to, to configure the RDS sever to work with the SBS network? I would like to see my users accessing published programs on the RDS server from within and outside the network by
using the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection applet.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting.
There are a couple of options here, assuming i am understanding your question correctly, and that you want to allow connections to https://server2/rdweb from the public internet.
If this is the case then i would recommend you use the remote desktop gateway service installed on a separate server. It sounds like you have an all in one setup currently with the RDWEB role and session host on the same server. Whilst you could put the
gateway role on this server it isn't recommended for security reasons.
The other option you have is to allow connections directly from the internet by forwarding https and tcp389 from your firewall to your server - this isn't really recommended as it is a security risk.
Im not overly familiar with the setup provided by SBS, but my understanding is that it uses a pre-configured / customised version of the remote desktop gateway role. So you can't use this server.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks
    Denis

  • DHCP lease issue for PPPoA sessions when using external DHCP server

We used to use the Cisco 7206VXR's DHCP server to hand out leases, and when we lost several hundred customers on a link, the router was able to get them up and connected with an IP address within minutes.
We switched over to using an external DHCP server so we could have more control over some extended DHCP options, as well as to aggregate all our DHCP traffic. Now, if we lose 100 DSL customers all at once, it takes 90 minutes for them to come up again. They come in a few at at time, until all 100 are back.
We see waves of RADIUS auth's in our RADIUS log (RADIUS has always been handled externally, so nothing changed there), and continuous streams of DHCP requests come in and DHCP offers go out. What seems to be happening is that a whole bunch of modems auth with RADIUS, request IP addresses, but for whatever reason, timeout when they don't all get their lease, drop the connection, and retry the whole process all over again. We purchased a dedicated DHCP server, thinking that was the bottleneck, but performance is about identical.
    Here's our config:
    interface Virtual-Template1
    ip unnumbered Loopback11
    ip helper-address a.b.c.d
    peer default ip address dhcp
    ppp authentication pap
    ppp ipcp dns a.b.c.d e.f.g.h
    ppp ipcp unique-address
    My questions are:
    - is there any performance issue with using an external DHCP server and PPPoA
    - is there anything in our config that would cause such delays
    Frank

    GP:
No, the DHCP server is not across a WAN link; there is only a 10/100 switch in between the router and the DHCP server. There are no dropped packets on the interface.
I ended up opening a case with TAC about this issue. While I had the helper address configured in the template, TAC recommeneded that I specify the actual DHCP server with the command "ip dhcp-server x.x.x.x". This eliminates the DHCPBROADCAST (which I've verified). Perhaps the DHCP relay portion of the Cisco router is performed serially, instead of in parallel. By that, I mean, the next DHCPBROADCAST won't go out until there is the response for the first DHCPBROADCAST.
I'll know in a few days when we test again.

I have a new EA3500 router that's working great for a variety of devices* except a Windows7 laptop.  24 hours after establishing a connection, the laptop loses connectivity and it's very difficult to re-establish a connection.  Usually I have to reboot the router, but 24 hours later the problem returns and Windows is unable to connect.
My router settings include DHCP client lease time set to 1440 minutes (24 hours), so I thought the problem might have something to do with DHCP lease renewal.  To test this theory, on Saturday night I did ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew and established connectivity from the laptop.
Sunday morning I spoke with Linksys support and changed several settings per their recommendation:
Network mode mixed (I had it on N-only for some reason)
Assigned different SSIDs to the 2.4GHz band and 5 GHz band
2.4 GHz band channel is 20MHz only, using channel 9
5 GHz band channel is 40 MHz only, using channel 161
I also power cycled the router.
Everything worked fine until Sunday night, 24 hours after the release/renew, when I lost connectivity.  I am not sure what to try next and whether the problem lies with the router or the laptop.
    * other devices include Macbook, 3 iPhones, iPad, 2 Kindles, printer, DVD player

If you are only having this problem with the laptop then there is a possibility that the problem might really be with the laptop. What you can do on the router though is to add the laptop on DHCP reservation. In that way, even if the router’s DHCP Lease time will stop, the laptop will still be connected since the laptop will now have a fix ip address.

  • Cisco Phone 7937 DHCP lease issue

    Hi ,
We have configured DHCP lease id 8 day. But Cisco Conferance Phone 7937 is taking DHCP lease for only 1 day. Can any one know the reason

Firmware 1.4(5) is available for the 7937. The release notes don't mention your problem, but there are other DHCP fixes in the firmware.

I haven't seen anything like this with our 7937s. Have you Wiresharked the phone, to be 100% sure what the phone is getting via DHCP is what you think it should be getting?

  • Windows 7 does not wake from sleep to renew DHCP Lease

I am having trouble with DHCP and sleeping Windows 7 systems.  My Windows 7 systems go to sleep after an hour or so.  The Intel and Broadcom NICs we have use ARP offloading so they continue to respond to ARP while the machine is sleeping.
The problem is that after the DHCP lease expires, the NIC continues to respond to the ARP requests and that causes IP conflicts on the network because the computer is responding to ARP requests for an IP address the computer has lost its lease on.  Any
time a computer is asleep for longer than the DHCP lease time then when a new computer gets the IP from the lost lease, an IP conflict is reported because the new leasee does an ARP to see if the IP is in use and the sleeping computers NIC responds to the
ARP and this results in an IP conflict for the new leasee.
I opened a ticket with the Hardware Vendor, which is Dell in this case, and they opened an engineering case with Intel - the NIC OEM.  The outcome of this case what that this is Windows fault.  Windows is supposed to wake up from sleep and renew
its DHCP lease at the lease half life and then go back to sleep.  My computers are not doing this.  They let the lease expire while they are sleeping.
Is there a problem with Windows 7 that prevents it from waking up and renewing its lease periodically?  It is supposed to maintain the lease according to Dell and Intel, but in my case it it not.

Extending the lease time is a bandage on the problem, and it is what we have done while I attempt to resolve the issue.
The network group would like the lease time set to 4 hours.
Extending the lease time doesn't resolve the issue because it only makes the problem occur less freqently.  With a 2 week lease, a machine needs to be asleep for 2 weeks before it causes a problem.  Machines are not likely to be asleep for 2 weeks
    very often.
The resolution would be to figure out why a sleeping Windows OS is not maintaining its IP address.  If it is not going to renew the DHCP lease while it is asleep, it is still responsible for updating the TCP stack (and the NIC) to let it know that it
no longer has a lease to that IP address.  The OS has offloaded ARP to the NIC, which continues to respond to ARP while the computer is asleep.  If the OS lets the lease expire, then it needs to notify the NIC to stop responding to ARP requests for
    that address.

  • MacBook Pro, Netcomm NB7Plus4W and Renewing DHCP Lease + Airport Express

Problem 1 - Internet Connection Problem
I am in a locatation with:
    2 x Late 2011 Macbook Pros 0sX 10.7.3
    1 X Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Osx 10.6.x
    3 x iPhone 4 iOs5.x
    1 x PC Windows XP
    ADSL2 internet connection
    Wireless Netcomm NB7Plus4W
The 2 x Macbook Pro's 0sX 10.7.3 have difficuly connecting to the internet after wake from sleep, restart etc. They connect to the wireless network okay however they are very slow to get online, usually about 3-5 minutes minimum. Usually what is required is openening System Prefs / Network / and renewing the DHCP lease, which reduces the Internet connection time by a couple of minutes.
    Other devices connect okay.
Problem 2 - Airport Express extending wirelss network
I would like to add an airport express to the wireless network so music can be played through iTunes to a coneected sound system, however the instructions in Airport Express Help do not seem to work.
Thanks for your replies in advance
    Christo

I don't think it can be a Leopard-specific issue, or even a MacBook or Airport one, 'cause I've been having the exact same problem for several weeks on my old G4 tower running 10.4.11 & connected by ethernet to a NetGear router. :\ In all user accounts it opens a few web pages then loses connection until I renew the DHCP lease - strangely, this seems to happen quicker while using Safari than Firefox, but that could be coincidental. When the G4 has lost its connection, both my 3G iPhone and my boyfriend's POS Dell laptop have no trouble connecting wirelessly.
I plan to try BDAqua's hardware test suggestion as soon as I have time to hunt for my Tiger install disks. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

  • MDT 2013 - A Connection to the deployment share could not be made - DHCP Lease was not obtained

First, let me give you some context:
Framework: MDT 2013 with MS SDK 7.1
Task Sequence: Standard Client TS with sysprep and capture.
Target workstation (build workstation): VM Guest on ESX 5.5 host, 8 vCPU, 8GB RAM, LSI Logic SAS Controller, E1000 NIC, SSD DAS
Behavior: The VM loads and installs the OS fine in PE, VM boots into OS successfully and resumes the TS, after the first system reboot, the error message occurs and it reads:
A connection to the deployment share (\\*********\DeploymentShare$) could not be made. DHCP Lease was not obtained for any Networking device! Possible Cause: Check physical connection. Retry:...... Cancel:.....
While observing this error, I didn't notice the NIC hadn't completely initialized and obtained an IP yet (network adapter icon in systray), additionally hitting retry after the NIC was initialized resumed the TS.
This behavior reoccurs with several subsequent reboots until a few more applications (Citrix Receiver, VMware Tools) with services are installed which seem to then slow the system boot-up time and then allows the TS to start after the NIC has initialized.
From several posts I've read on this forum, this particular behavior was alleviated by a "wait for IP lease" mechanism built into the TS engine which was introduced in MDT 2010 SP1, I wasn't able to find any other confirmation whether
this mechanism is still in effect with MDT 2013. Another point worth mentioning from several other posts I was able to find is that this behavior appears to manifested itself on target workstations with SSDs, which would somewhat explain the faster
TS load time vs waiting for an IP lease. I've also tried to replicate this behavior in a non-SSD and low-performance VM environment and I wasn't able to replicate it.
My question: Does anyone else have experienced this behavior with MDT 2013 and if so, how did you resolve it? Or is this a bug?

I have this issue intermittently as well.  For us, it coincided with the deployment of IP phones, which meant PoE switches all around.  However, the problem persisted even after we turned off PoE to the ethernet ports from which we normally PXE
    boot.
As this issue has been intermittent, I've backburnered it.  When it does happen, I just wait for the lease to arrive then rerun the wizard.
Thanks for the feedback, that's true the TS can be resumed manually once the lease has occured but it defeats the purpose of an automated TS if I have to keep an eye on it and intervene if I need to.
The network guys here recommended putting wireshark or network monitor on it and figuring out just what the heck is going on.  Basically, what Keith Garner said.  They also disabled PortFast awhile back to see if that made any difference, and it did
    not.

  • RV180W firmware 1.0.5.4 DHCP lease problem

Yesterday I upgraded my RV180W to firmware 1.0.5.4. Today the only machine that we have with XP can't get a DHCP lease (we have some 20 machines that can that all have W7 o W8.1). Also none of the iPhones nor Androids that connect via wifi get leases either and thus have fallen back to 3G.

    Hello,
First of all I want to say that I'm sorry you are experiencing an issue with the device after the firmware upgrade.
Now, we have tested this device with the new firmware on our lab and we are not experiencing the same issue, which leads me to believe this may be an issue with your particular configuration or network topology.
We would love to have the opportunity to troubleshoot this issue on the Small Business Support Center. If you are still under support with the device, give us a call and we will be happy to assist you.
If you are not able to or are out of support, then please provide as much information as possible in regards to your current configuration as well as network topology, maybe a detailed network diagram could be helpful to so that we can have a better idea of that the issue could be.
    I hope this was helpful.

  • How do I revoke a DHCP lease in the 10.8.4 server app?

    Hello Everyone,
I have some devices (security cameras) that have successfully requested a DHCP lease.  Since then I went ahead and manually created a static reservation for them with a MAC hardware address in the DHCP.  For whatever reason they are not switching over to the reserved address.  The leases were originally for 1 day.  It has been 5 days now.  After the first day I switched my lease time to 1 hour.  I have done everything short of leaving the devices off for 24 hours.
In Lion server, I could revoke the lease via the gui.  No such luck now.  My call to Applecare resulted in a "there is no way in 10.8.4 to do this".  They said it would switch to the new reserved address after the initial lease period timed out, so I'm hoping the representative was wrong twice.  They mentioned a complete lease wipe, but couldn't say if this would cause me to lose my list of reserved static addresses, which isn't an option.
It seems crazy that such a basic feature wouldn't make it into this release of the DHCP service.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are there any DHCP queries from the cameras?  Check the DHCP server log via Console.app or Server.app (or Terminal.app) for details.  (I don't know the 10.8 path to the DHCP logs offhand.)
According to a FAQ over at the Vivotek site, the following is the setup sequence for various recent cameras; the boxes start up in the "I don't have an IP address" self-allocated address block oddly enough, and apparently don't ask for a DHCP address?  (You may well be aware of all of this, but this is the block that DHCP clients use when they first communicate with DHCP servers.)
If you are using our new product such as IP7138 / IP7139 / FD7131 / VS7100… etc, no matter your network environment is what, you can always find the camera by Installation Wizard II with the IP address 169.254.x.y.
And then, please double click the camera found by Installation Wizard II or directly type the IP address to your Internet Explorer URL box to access your camera (you do not need to change your PC's IP address). After access your camera, please go to "Network" page to configure proper network settings.
See if the devices are available via mDNS, as well; download the Bonjour Browser and have a look around your LAN.  (If you're very lucky, the cameras might be visible and chatting on mDNS.)
Might also try resetting one of the cameras back to factory defaults, and seeing if you can get them to re-ask the DHCP server.
(I've had issues with some HP printers and DHCP clients and IP address assignment, but that's fodder for another discussion.  And I also wouldn't rule out a rogue DHCP server, either.  I've seen all sorts of unexpected stuff connected to networks over the years...)
