[SBS 2011] USB drive 3 TB and Windows Boot

Attached new USB drive to the SBS server. The previous one, 2 TB,  died. This one is 3 TB. When I reboot the server, I see the message 'Windows is starting' briefly and then it halts with an error. Can't make a screenshot, but it's something with UEFI
boot. Didn't know what caused this, so I tried starting Windows in safe mode. Same error. O dear. What has changed recently... ah, them USB drive. Unhooked it from the server and Windows booted just fine.
I didn't have this problem with the previous USB drive. The BIOS / UEFI setup of the server is set to boot from harddisk, then CD/DVD. The USB drive isn't coming into play at the boot stage. And it doesn't since I briefly see the message 'Windows starting'.
When Windows starts, it somehow does something to the USB drive and then decides it can't start. How do I prevent Windows from checking them USB drive at startup?
Simon

None of them answers are correct. I don't use the drive for Windows Backup. Tested the drive and it's OK. I rebooted the machine so I could create a screenshot. When Windows starts, it displays the text "Windows is loading files...."
and a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. When that bar is full, the machine stops with an error. It looks like this error is triggered by the BIOS, since it displays:
BIOS rev 2.3.3
A system restart is required.
The system detected an exception during the UEFI pre-boot environment.
Press Enter on the Serial Console for detailed exception info.
Type: General Protection Fault (13) Source: Software (UEFI0011)
Then a bunch of numbers and the line:
-->rip C023D04C bootmgfw.efi <--Crash occurred here
Reading this, I wonder if it's a Windows problem or some BIOS / UEFI thing?

  • Mac Pro  -  Reads USB Drive only in Windows

For the past couple weeks I have been sharing 'Word' documents on a USB drive using both Windows and Mac OS platforms. A couple days ago the Mac side of the computer stopped recognizing the USB drive. It does even show the drive on the desktop. I tried putting the drive in the other USP port. This didn't help. When I turn on the Windows side, using XP, the drive works fine.
Am I doing something wrong? Can I use the same USB drive to share files? Or, do I need try another way to share files between platforms?
If this doesn't work, I was thinking of putting my files on Google Documents and accessing almost everything via the Internet.

I recently had the reverse happen to me. I had a FAT formatted flash drive that I would frequently put into a device that needed non-Mac. I also used to use it a lot with Windows - Mac transfers. Plugged it into a Windows computer and it said it needed formatting. The only think I can think of is occasionally something gets written to the drive in a form that the other system can't handle. I'd copy off any files that are valuable then reformat the drive to FAT and see if it then works.

  • Neo Platinum and windows boot

well i got this board just last week along with an AMD 64bit 3200+ CPU .. everything is running fine except when i boot
the "platinum" screen shows, then detects my raid card (silicon image sil 0680 ultra-133 medley ata raid) and the one drive attached to it, after that it goes to boot into windows, the "windows XP" logo appears faded (like 20% opacity) then the computer hangs for like 30 seconds (the logo is frozen, as well as the bar) then the logo appears normally and the blue bar starts moving and windows boots up fine ...
    anyone have any suggestions? :D
    btw im a newbie :p
    thanks, levi.
    running windows XP SP2

I'm there brother - I got the same EXACT problem.  But I believe this is related to the BIOS version.  From what I've seen, people have fixed this issue by installing the 1.43 BIOS (currently in beta).  I'd love to know when they're going to release it officially.
IOW, we gots to wait   ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ....

  • How many usb drives to install windows 8.1

    Hi!
I hope that someone can help answer my question.
I need to install windows on my laptop.  It is an Air with 4gb ram and 256g drive from 2011.
So, I tried to download windows to my mac but that didn't work.  The windows store only allows downloading to a windows machine!
Ok, so I erased my usb flash drive and installed a copy of the software on the usb drive (it is formatted as exFat, I think).
Good, take this to my Air and start Bootcamp assistant.  Now it tells me that it will erase that usb drive to put the support software on there.
What the heck?  Wouldn't it have told me I needed two usb drives?  Is that possibly true? Can't both files be on one 32gb flash drive?
Am I missing something?  I've done a ton of stuff on mac over the years but this does seem difficult.
    Peter

You can install Windows using Boot Camp Assistant, instructions located here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Or, you can install Windows using a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. Instructions located on their respective sites.

  • Cannot Find Drivers on USB Drive While Installing Windows 7

I'm so annoyed by this whole process.  I have a Macbook Pro Retina, brand new, and I need Windows 7 installed pronto on bootcamp.  Obviously I don't have an optical drive.  I did install Parallels with a Windows 7 ISO downloaded directly from the microsoft website that installed perfectly and works perfectly, but it doesn't run smoothly with the apps I need to use so I need Bootcamp.
I've researched on here.  I've tried both a Sandisk Cruzer USB2.0 thumb drive as well as the Sandisk Ultra USB3.0 drive.  I've tried downloading, unzipping and putting the Bootcamp Support files directly on the USB with the windows iso called "WININSTALL" as well as a different USB thumbdrive that I formated to MS-DOS (FAT32).  I cannot find the issue, but once I boot in to install windows, it says it can't find the drivers.  Earlier I could get the keyboard and trackpad work, so using the Bootcamp Assistant I deleted everything and the partition and started over allowing the assistant to do everything (the 3 radio boxes were checked) but then it still doesnt find the frigging drivers.  HELP me please!  Thanks in advance.

    Hey djbolt,
    Success! Finally got it working.
I was told by Apple support that new Macs that don't have built in DVD drives cannot complete Windows installation from the DVD directly. One must first create a disk image of the Windows install DVD (in Disk Utility), then merge this disc image with the boot camp drivers (done in Bootcamp) onto a USB flash drive.
These instructions refer to Windows 8, but the process is the same for Windows 7.

    Hope this helps.

  • Can I use a USB drive to install windows 7 on my Macbook Pro?

I currently have the Windows 7 iso on a usb flash drive.  I am running bootcamp 4.0.3, and there is no option to create a windows 7 install disk via usb drive.  Also I cannot download the Windows support software.  Is there a direct download to the drivers, or another version of bootcamp that would allow me to install via usb, like the MBA?  Or is there a way to work around this problem?  I don't have access to any writable CD/DVDs so the usb drive is really my only option currently.

Copy the ISO to your disk and try using that to write the ISO to (another) USB device.
    Instructions for the Air: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4407
download a free iso burning program for Mac (we used SimplyBurns Mac). That program runs you through the necessary steps to properly burn the iso file you need. After doing so, Bootcamp recognized the installation file and everything worked as it should.

    http://simplyburns.en.softonic.com/mac
If for some reason you downloaded Windows from Microsoft instead of buying a package with a disc, you need to download the ISO version and burn it to a DVD. See this article on downloading the ISO: http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct-download -links-ultimate-professional-and-home-premium/ (Make sure you choose the ISO that matches the version you bought).
Here's instructions on burning an ISO with Disk Utility: http://lifehacker.com/251758/mac-tip--how-to-burn-an-iso-or-dmg-file-to-disc And this thread on burning a Windows DVD in OSX: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2039118?start=0&tstart=0 (Summary: you can use Disk Utility to burn the ISO, but choose a slow burn speed)

  • How do I create a bootable USB Drive to install Windows 7 on a MBP Retina

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a MBP Retina.(I'm running Mountain Lion)  I followed BootCamp's directions to create a bootable copy of Windows on a USB Flash Drive.  When I go to install, Boot Camp creates the partition, but I get a Windows black screen that says that "there is no bootable drive - hit any key".  I have to force shut down, because hitting any key does nothing.  I tried the Bootcamp directions at least 3 times, but have been unable to get the USB Drive to start up the Install program.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I have Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD. The USB driver can't installed, and i can't use from USB for transfer file or data to tablet.
I use USB for transfer to Table in workplace without error or any problem, But in home PC can't install USB Driver.

Question: I connect my MediaPad 10 FHD to a PC, but the MediaPad 10 FHD is not displayed as a USB drive. Why? What can I do?
Answer: MediaPad 10 FHD uses MTP and does not support USB Mass Storage mode. With a PC running Windows 7 or later, your MediaPad 10 FHD is displayed as a storage device, but with a PC running Windows XP or earlier, install Windows Media Player 11 and
the USB driver if you are connecting your MediaPad 10 FHD to the PC for the first time.
Using MTP, you can access files stored on your MediaPad 10 FHD from the PC.

  • Using Airport Extreme- Printers & Hard Drives - Mac and WIndows XP Network

I might be asking a really dumb question now, I have a Mac Pro, a PC my sons use and a laptop my wife uses. The PC and laptop both run XP Pro.
I have my Airport Extreme set up and working well with my BT Home Hub acting as my modem only - that went much easier than I thought.
All I want to do is to set up a network - my Mac (wired) to my Airport Extreme with a Canon Printer and external hard drive. I also want to be able to share files on the PC and Laptop (wireless) with other users as well as the printers. Ideally, i'm looking for a video website that will easily show how to set this up. I appreciate I may need to view several clips to get this sorted. I have tried YouTube without much success.
As I said, this may be a dumb question.
    Thanks in advance, Matt

    1. So, what I want to do now is share an external hard drive also connected to my AEBS using a USB hub.
AirPort: How to mount an AirPort Extreme USB hard disk volume in Mac OS X and Windows
    2. Share files on my other PC machines as well as their printers. So, if I need some text printing done quickly, I would print it from my sons' pc printer downstairs but request it from my mac upstairs.
I'm sure that Windows has the ability to share a printer, but I have no details on how to enable it.
    3. Access / share files between Mac Pro, laptop and PC
On your Macs, go to the Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing. Now they can be seen by other devices.
"How to Share Files between your Mac and PC"
"File sharing between Mac and PC"
    4. Access Mac Pro online via Back to my Mac (I do have a mobile me account for this).
In the MobileMe preference pane on the Mac Pro, enable the Back To My Mac feature. Then on your remote Mac the Mac Pro should appear in the Finder's sidebar as a shared item.

  • Trying to install Mountain Lion on external USB drive. Will not boot!

Running mid-2010 MBP 15", OS X 10.8.5 (upgraded from orig. 10.6 Snow Leopard). I'm trying to create an external boot disk from scratch -- 500gb USB drive.
Working from instructions on this page:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5911
    1. Re-partitioned the hard drive with GUID partition table, 1 partition, formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    2. Downloaded the installer from the App Store. Ran the install. Installer runs without incident. So far so good...
When the installer is finished running, and the system tries to re-boot, it just hangs at the grey screen.
The drive mounts normally if I set the start disk to the original internal disk. I ran 'verify disk' from disk utilities and all appears to be okay.
Tried a different USB cable, I'm about to swap the drive into another USB enclosure to see if that's the issue.
Any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot?

Just swapped the drive out to another USB enclosure. It's booting. Who knew the enclosures could be so sensitive? Wondering if it's a power supply issue on the other enclosure?
