Scale an Imported Graphic (Frame and Contents at Once)

I have read the help files, the knowledge base, even watched the instructional videos but can' t figure out how to size a placed graphic. I understand the difference between a frame and the contents. I can scale either one using the mouse or the numeric controls. But to scale the whole thing, do I have to scale each seseparately?
E.g., I want to size a photo to 2.0 inches wide. I don't see a way to do this in one operation.
I see that you CAN do it by %. Select object frame and if you size to 50%, it works -- both frame and contents go to half size. But if I size to a dimension, (width=1.5"), I have to do the frame, then the contents.
Is there a way to act on both frame and contents at once?
This is InDesign CS3 on a Mac.

This is not exactly intuitive. Select the frame, then look in the  control panel for the horizontal and vertical scale fields, which should both say 100% when you first select an object. The default unit of measurement in these fields is %, but like any of the numeric fields in ID you can use any units you want, as long as tell InDesign what units you're using. If you want 2.0" wide, enter 2.0i (you don't need the n) in the width field and press enter. Your frame and content will scale to 2".

  • CS4 - Resizing both frame and content in "width" transform palete...

We need to resize placed picture, but both frame and content at same time with writing exact dimension in "width" transform palete. Problem is that only frame is resized. If we select picture with direct selection tool, only content is resized.

Wrong field. Select the frame and use the scale fields to change the size of frames together with the content. This behavior was introduced in CS3.
Plain numbers in those fields are interpreted by default as percentages, but you can enter exact dimensions of your choice by specifying the measurement unit after the number.

  • SCALING FRAMES AND CONTENT

I am using ID CS4. I'm having a little trouble figuring out how the scaling features work. It seems I can only manage to scale the frame and not the content. I have discovered the object/fitting/fit content to frame feature but it seems such a long work around. Can you not enter numeric values in the height or width boxes and it scale both frame and content any more? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not very intuitive but if you put the actual numeric values into
the percent fields it will work. Just make sure to put the full
    value...6in, not 6.

  • Resize frame and contents at the same time

Is there a keyboard shortcut that can be used to resize the frame and the contents of the frame at the same time? Command + Option + < > works but only resizes the frame or the contents, not both at once.

    Ah yes: google a bit.
This has been discussed a few dozen times and there are scripts around (eg. by Sandee Cohen) to fill the gap.

  • Cut and Paste: Frame and Content Size Auto Changes

I'm working in InDesign CS2 and am having this reoccurring problem.
When I cut and paste frames with placed images (or pull images from a library) the frame and image will both expand to between 300%-3,000%. As you can imagine, it's very frustrating to have to create new frames and place new images every time. Any suggestions on how to fix or work around?

I'm still having problems with this, even using Paste and Match Style.
My table has three rows with gray background, then three rows of white; this pattern repeats for many rows. In the center row of each three rows is some text, while all other rows are blank. I want to move all this text down three rows, so that the text that was in the center row of the gray rows now is in the center row of the white rows, but I want the row colors to remain unchanged. Here's what I've tried.
If I "Cut" the selected cells, then the background colors are cut, so this is no good. Instead, I Copy the cells, then hit the Delete key. This leaves the background alone. Now I select a cell three rows down from the top. If I Paste, then the old backgrounds are pasted in, which is not the behavior I want. If I Paste and Match Style, then all the backgrounds are overwritten with white, except those single rows that originally contained both text, and had a gray background. The original cells that were gray but had no text are pasted in as white.
This latter behavior makes no sense to me. There seems to be a difference in how Paste and Match Style works, depending on whether the copied cells had text, or were blank.
Is there another way to do this rather common task—moving text around a table that has alternating-colored rows, without messing up those colors?

  • Resize frame and content proportionately

    Hello
When i try to use Selection tool+Shift+Command–drag in mac or Selection tool+Shift+Ctrl–drag in PC
to resize an image  or some text proportionately it doesn't seem to work like in illustrator, indesign... it does resize but not proportionately.
Is it possible to have the same shortcuts like this one in Adobe Muse? it will make it easier to place images and change size after.
    Thank you.

    Hi Maria
It works just the opposite of what you are familiar with. Proportional scaling is built in, just drag a corner without holding any keyboard buttons down. To scale disproportionately you use the keyboard keys
    hope that helps,

  • Resizing graphics frames that have stroke/keylines

When I resize a graphic frame (with a placed image in it) that has a stroke/keyline, the stroke changes weight and I have to reapply the Object Style which sets the weight. How can I keep the same weight when I resize?
Also is there a way of changing the default behaviour of SHIFT+Resize box with mouse so that it resizes the frame AND content rather than having to use the more cumbersome ALT+SHIFT+mouse resize? I do that far more often then just resizing the frame and keeping the ratio!

Scaling Stroke Issue: On the menu bar at the far right, select the flyout and you will see the option "Adjust Stroke Weight When Scaling" here you can deselect to turn off
Resizing Issue: For just one image, select image, Object > Fitting > Frame Fitting Options > Turn on Autofit and Desired Fitting Option
Resizing Issue: For multiple images, Object Styles > select stye(s) > Frame Fitting Options > Turn on Autofit and Desired Fitting Option

  • Graphics Frames

I am having a hell of a time working with graphics frames. I have two problems:
    1) How do I create call-outs in a graphics frame that stay within the frame and can be grouped with the primary graphic in the frame (i.e., a screenshot).
    2) Sometimes I use text boxes within graphics frames and want to group the text box and graphics frame so they behave as one object. Sometimes I can do this and sometimes I cannot. What trick is there to doing this?
    Thanks.
    Best wishes,

    HI, Tony:
This is one of the most maddening aspects of InDesign. When you create a grouped object outside of an anchored frame and paste it into a selected anchored frame - for example a text frame and a graphic object - you can edit the text in the the text frame, and if I recall correctly, you can select the text frame or graphic with the Direct-Selection tool (the white arrow), and move them within the anchored frame, but you can't paste another object into the anchored frame without replacing those already present. You need to either cut the group from the anchored frame and paste it outside the anchored frame, then add objects to, or subtract objects from the group, regroup, and paste that into the anchored frame.
Please add your own formal request to those already at Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form.

  • Text goes fuzzy when picture is placed in graphics frame

I have been using InDesign for over a year and love the software. One thing continues to drive me mad and I dont know whats going on.
Basically when I add a picture into a layout, often (but not always) the text goes fuzzy similar to anti-aliasing being turned off (its not). It just did it again this morning. I have laid out a drop dead simple business card, text is crisp. I add a graphics frame and everythings still OK. I place my PSD file into the frame and bang the text goes fuzzy. If I select and delete the graphics frame the text sharpens up again.
I have had many situations where it does the same thing but also times when it doesnt. I can see no obvious link between what I am (or am not) doing and why this happens. I also considered that this was just a display issue and it would be fine when sent to a PDF but the quality of the text in a PDF is noticable less with the graphic than without it even at "press" quality.
    All help and suggestions appreciated.
    Jon

Check the pages panel and see if there is a Chequerboard beside the page. This indicates transparency in the PSD.
Does your psd have a transparent background?
Try opening the psd and save it as a tiff.
Select your image in photoshop and create a path. Change the path to a clipping path.
    Save it as a tiff.
    Place the tiff.
    Go to Object>Clipping Path Options
Choose the path you created in photoshop.
Is the text still fuzzy? Just need to check that it is actually the PSD that is causing it, and making it a flat tiff with a clipping path will clear that up if it is.
You only need to have the background transparent if you're placing the image on a colour other than white, usually. So if the image doesn't need transparency in it or a transparency background the leave it flattened with a white background, but retain a clipping path if you ever need it.
Usually PSD files are fine to place and to use in InDesign.
    Well hope something here helps.

  • Generating an LOR for imported graphics in a Frame 12 book is failing.

When I attempt to generate a List of References for imported graphics in Frame 12, all I get back are the PDFs and PS files. Why no SVGs or TIFs, or other graphics formats? Is there a setting somewhere that determines which types of graphics files will be listed?

Other files that are not included are SVG and JPEG.

  • Width Wrong for Imported Graphics in Frame 9

Has anyone else had issues with Framemaker detecting the wrong width when importing graphics?  As an example, when I import a JPG of a button that should be 21 x 21 pixels, Framemaker displays the width as 24px and the height as 21px.  This results in a smashed graphic.  If I adjust the dimensions of the graphic in FrameMaker to the correct dimensions, then print the PDF, the right border of the image is off.
I have tried capturing the graphic a variety of different ways, and I always experience the same results.  I can import the graphic into Captivate or Word and the sizing is correct.  Any ideas?  Thanks!
I am using FrameMaker version 9.0p237 as part of the Technical Communication Suite 2.

I just tested this with a sample file at the 21x21 dimensions, and you are absolutely correct. FM9 screws up the dimensions (and default dpi resolution) for PNG and GIF files. I also tried BMP and TIF equivalents and these were ok. FM8 does not have this problem, so it looks like Adobe played with the PNG and GIF filters a bit (perhaps to get rid of all of the extra colours coming in).
For a JPG or PNG import of a 21x21 at 96dpi, FM9 seems to think that it is 24x21 at 110dpi. FM8 gets it right.
For a GIF import of the same, FM9 thinks it is 22x21 at 75dpi. FM8 got it right.
What's also strange is that if the dimensions are both even, e.g. 20x20 at 96dpi, then FM9 gets it right for the JPG, PNG and GIF. However, if the *first* dimension is odd, e.g. 21x20 it gets it wrong again as before, but if the second dimesion is odd, e.g. 20x21, the it gets it right. VERY WIERD!
    It's definitely a BUG.
I would suggest that you either use BMP or TIF for now OR try to increase your icons by 1 pixel to make them an even size, e.g. 22x22.
I'd also recommend that you not use JPG for these, but rather GIF or PNG, because you may generate some unwanted artifacts in the JPG due to the lossy compression used.

  • Box containing text and image (fit frame to contents).

    Hi all,
The best way I can describe what I am trying to achieve is to show you a picture.
So essentially, I'm looking to create a grey box, containing some text with an image floating to the right hand side. I want about 2mm space (padding) inside the grey box so no content goes right to the edge and I want the text to wrap around the image. The bit I'm finding tricky is when I go to use the 'Fit frame to content' option. I'm trying to remove the space indicated by the red arrows but if I anchor the image inside the text frame, the grey box shrinks to the height of the text and the image overflows.
This would be incredibly simple to achieve on the web, am I doing something wrong?
Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, been out for an hour.
I understood that you want to have some variable height text frame (the gray box), and that this box should reduce in height to fit the text contained therein, but not  less than necessary for the bottom to be 2mm below the bottom edge of the variable height image (which I'm presuming is anchored to the first line of text in the frame) in a case where there is not sufficient text for fit frame to content to avoide making the frame shorter than the bottom of the image.
I believe this could be scripted, but that will still require you to run the script. You should ask over in InDesign Scripting
As far as a container that holds both text and image frames, yes, but only if you "paste into" a new frame after creating the two separately and grouping, which probably is not what you have in mind.

  • ? Scale Factor of Imported Graphics

I've exhausted every possible place I can find an answer, so if it's obvious to you, I apologize, but I have tried.
I am going from nearly 20 years in Pagemaker (and Quark) to Indesign. The transition is not intuitive to say the least. My biggest head scratch is where do I find the proportions or scaling of images. The images are in their containers, but I find no way to see what their scaling factor is set to.
The fit content to frame, fit frame to content, etc. etc. buttons in the tool bar don't give this info. In Pagemaker, there were actual x and y scaling measures. One of the advantages of seeing the measures is to ensure that you're not over scaling an object (and subjecting your image to pixelation). Links, right clicking, double clicking, etc. I just cannot find this information.

Thank you Peter. I figured I was making it harder than it needed to be. I appreciate your taking the time to reply.

  • Generating a List of References in FM12 to include External Cross-References and Imported Graphics, but no Imported Graphic references show in the LOR.  Is this a bug in FM12 or what am I doing wrong?

and has always generated the list of references just fine.  Now in FM12, the LOR no longer will give any references for the Imported Graphics.  I have even tried creating a new chapter from the FM12 templates, adding the chapter to the front of the book, and allowing FM12 to use that file as the template for the LOR.  Still no success - it will not give any references to the Imported Graphics in my chapter files.  Is this a bug in FM12?  Is there something different about FM12 that would cause this not to work with existing FM11 files???  Please help, I need this resolved and working.
    Thank you,
    Beverly

    Arnis and Jeff,
Thank you both very much for your assistance.  I was able to figure out why the Adobe Application Manager kept failing on installing the patches.  Idiot me didn't unzip them first.  Once I unzipped the patch files, the installer worked fine.  Both patches are now successfully installed; my FM version is now 12.0.2..
To answer some of your questions:
Yes, I have administrator privileges on my PC.
Yes, I had all of the files in the book opened when I generated and/or updated the LOR file.  So that was not the issue.
With the patches installed, I opened a book and all of its files.  I updated the LOR and all works fine – it gives me all of the Imported Graphic references. So there must have been an issue with that release of FM12 (12.0.0.329), which was fixed with the patches.
Again, thank you both for your help!
    Best regards,
    Beverly
