Scale Path With Blur Effect

Hello
This should be simple, I must be missing something obvious.
For simplicity let's say I have a circle with a 20px Gaussian Blur effect. If I scale it to be 10% of its original size, with 'Scale Stroke and Effects' ticked, it still has a 20px blur. How do I scale the circle without expanding its appearance please. I would like to retain the effect but it end up a 2px blur.
Thank you.
Chris

Hello Kurt
I had never noticed that the Transform effect scales the effects correctly as well.
Thanks.

  • Spinning, with blur effect

    Dear all
    I'm trying to create a 'spinning text effect' in Flash - a bit like a reel of a one armed bandit machine - going round counter clockwise, with a a bit of motion blur so you can't read the text whilst in the spin, with the spin slowly coming to a stop to show a line of text.
    I've seen some banner ad's recently which use this effect, actually emulating 3 reel bandit machine but can't work out how it's done.
    I'm using Flash CS4 - can anybody point me in the right direction please?
    Many thanks

  • Problem with keyframe effect - at start and end (crop and scale)

    I'm having this odd problem with keyframe effects.
    Setup:
    I have a gif image that I have on video 1 for say 2 minutes.
    I have my real video on video 2.  It is a person talking.
    First I start with my video full size on top of video 1.
    Though the motion and cropping keyframe management I slowly reduce the scale and crop my video image so that it is reduced to the lower left bottom of the screen, on top of the gif, which is now revealed.
    My problem is at the start and end of the transition from full video to small box on lower left on top of my gif I often get 1-2 frames where the video goes blank and/or I get a bunch of random red bars on black background appearing on the video - Or I get the gif from video 1 without the video 2 at all (it disappears).
    I've tried moving my start of end of the transition to skip the bad spots - but these new transition starts or ends not get their own bad spots in the same way.  Its only a couple of frames but it's really unacceptable for the finished video.
    Note, when I say transition here I don't mean real transition events, but rather the start of effects that are managed with keyframes.  My move from start to end of the effect runs for about 4-6 seconds.
    Any ideas?

    Bill,
    Here is more detail and screen captures.
    Concept:
    I have 3 minutes of video.  It contains a person making a speech.  During parts of the speech I want to reveal a graphic image that will be discussed.  The speech will begin with the speaker full screen.  Half way in, the speaker will shrink down to 45% in the lower left corner of the screen.  While the animation occurs (the shrink, move and cropping) it will reveal the graphic below.  The graphic will take up the full screen with the speaker at 45%.
    Technique:
    I put the video in Video 2 and the graphic, a GIF image in Video 1.  The scene begins with the speaker talking at full screen.  After a minute, I animate the move of the speaker using Motion: Scale and Position and Effect: Crop changing Top, Bottom, Left and Right sides.  The animation occurs over approximately 8 seconds.
    I am manually adding keyframes at the start and end of the animation.  I set the ending state of the video image in the end keyframes.  The interpolation between these start and end keyframes should be managing the animation.
    Problem:
    At the beginning and end of the animation – usually 1-3 frames from the start and 1-3 frames from the end, where the change has barely begun or almost ended, I get these problems.  On some frames, the video (in Video 2) completely disappears only showing the Video 1 GIF image below.  On other frames, the video image turns black with horizontal red bands half way across.
    Troublshooting:
    I’ve tried deleting all start and end keyframes and moving the start and end earlier or later to see if I can fix this, but the problem continues to show up in these new locations.
    I have added a few screen shots.
    1:32:15 is the start of the animation change and 1:40:22 is the end of increasing from the mini video speaker to full size (on top of the GIF).
    At 1:40:16 the video image completely disappears only showing the GIF below.
    At 1:40:17 its back and slowly increases in size through the interpolation until it is full size at 1:40:22.
    Let me know if you need anything else.
    Thanks!
    Evan

  • How do I mask a path with a blending mode so that if only effects the groups below?

    I am working on a logo but have run into what seems like a simple problem but nothing about masks that I have found seems to work. I have
    two groups and in one of them I have a path with an overlay blending mode. Above both groups I have the same path with the same blending mode. (I have used two as I wanted a stronger effect on the lower group)
    Here is the project against white:
    As you can see the logo itself looks fine and I thought it was ready to use.
    However upon exporting it I noticed that the layers with opacity that where invisable agaist the white where now visable. I ussumed this would eb a simple fix as I am used to this problem with After Effects. Illistrator is not my forte and I am not used to how the masks work.
    After two hours of messing around and searching on the internet for answers I have given up. This must be a common thing to pop up but I couldn't find the answer so here I am. Please can someone help me remove the unwanted white circles.
    Thanks,
    Ben.

    Thank you for replying Monika,
    I have copied the Paths but dont understand what you mean by expand the 3D effect. With the text I was able to click ungroup and edit the individual sides. I am unable to do this with the logo, I dont know exactly why. Also when I combine all my paths they just go into one group. You will have to excuse me, I still have a lot to learn.
    Thanks,
    Ben.

  • Problem with Blur filters in effects browser

    Has anyone had a problem with the blur filters? Whenever I try to skim or apply any blur effect it freezes the viewer. Other effects are fine. Other functions of FCPX still work ok. The audio is ok, skimming works etc but the viewer is frozen. FCP then hangs on shutdown and requires a force quit, but relaunches fine. I have trashed FCPX permissions, repaired permissions for the OS, repaired the HD and redownloaded the application all to no avail. I also have FCPX installed on another startup drive and it does the same thing there. My computer is an iMAC 27 inch I7 with 4 gigs of RAM runing 10.6.8. FCPX is version 10.0.3.
    I did open a copy of the zoom blur effect in Motion and the only unusual thing I noticed was that there is a project loop end marker set at frame 1 of the project. Don't know if that is a factor. Any help greatly appreciated!

    I am refering to any of the blur category filters in the effects browser. I think there are like 6 of them sharpen, gaussian, prism, radial, and zoom. What happens is if I select a clip then go to the effects browser and scroll over the filters I will initially see a preview as you are supposed to. But very quickly that stops and if I go back to the timeline the viewer is frozen showing the previously selected clip. All the rest of FCP works normally ie you can scroll the timeline, select clips, use the tools etc. Only the viewer is frozen. You have to force quit FCP and restart to get back to normal. None of the other effects in effects browser cause any problems.
    I said in my first message all the things  I have tried unsuccessfully. This one is a real puzzler for me.

  • Script to Edit Gaussian Blur Effect

    Hello
    I have a complex piece of artwork which has to be scaled up by a factor of 10. No problem except the Gaussian Blur Effect will not scale.
    Rather than go through each path and edit the blur amount (by a factor of 10) I had hoped I could write a script which would iterate through every path and if it had a Gaussian Blur Effect edit the value.
    Looking in the AppleScript dictionary and online I can't see any way of accessing a path's Appearance or Effects.
    I would be very grateful for some advice on this before I start the tedious process of manually changing the values.
    Regards
    Chris

    Hello Mark
    Thanks for your prompt reply. I thought as much. It's disappointing really.
    The select filters will not unfortunately be helpful because the blurs are different so I can't select all blurred items because I don't want to set them all the same and equally I can't pick one and select all with the same blur amount because I don't know if I have changed all of the items.
    I've just got my head down and am selecting them all individually and editing them!

  • Scale path without affecting stroke width

    Hi all,
    This seems like it should be simple to do but I'm not having any luck here. Basically I have a path parented to a null that controls several things, scaling them down, rotating and moving across the composition. One of those items is a path with a stroke of 32 px.  I want to be able to scale the path itself down, but leave the stroke the same.
    I thought I could key the stroke width manually but that has no effect- scaling it up as the path scales down doesn't seem to change the stroke width at all at the end keyframe, only at the beginning keyframe. I see the px count start at 32 and increase up to as it moves along the timeline, even though the stroke width on screen is still getting smaller as if there were no change at all to the width.
    Thanks!

    You generally don't want to scale the layer that contains the stroke, you want add keyframes to the mask path and animate the size of the path. This is easy. You just start by double-clicking one of the vertices and using the transform box.
    If this technique does not work for you then you have two other options, both involving expressions. Both of these options use exactly the same expression to look at the scale of your null layer and both assume that the null is at 100% scale at the start of the animation. The option that I would choose would be to replace the mask path on a layer with stroke applied with shape layer path with stroke applied. You have so many more options and you're dealing with vector information. With either solution this is the expression.
    sf = thisComp.layer("Control Null 1").transform.scale[0]/100;
    ov = value;
    nv = ov / sf
    sf (scale factor) is the x scale value of the controlling null that is the parent of the stroke layer or the layer with the stroke effect applied to a mask divided by 100. If you intend to scale X and Y of the parent you'll have to modify the expression and then combine the scale factors and this solution will not work as well.  The original scale value is divided by 100 to turn it into a decimal value
    ov (original value)  is the original set value of the stroke.
    nv (new value) is calculated by dividing the original value by the scale factor.
    This is just basic algebra from the 7th grade. If your controlling parent is scaled below 0 then the stroke will go away because the value will change to a negative number. If this is necessary in your composition you can write an if statement that will change the nv back to a positive number if the scale factor becomes less than or equal to zero and solves the divide by zero error you would get with a scale factor of zero.
    One last point, and this is important. This expression will produce accurate results if applied to the brush size of a mask path when using the Effects>Generate>Stroke effect to create your line but when scaled over 100% the line will begin to fall apart and anti aliasing will not be able to keep up with pixilation caused by the scale. Over about 120% the line will start to look thinner and over 140% it will look bad even though the stroke width is numerically accurate.
    I'll let you take it from here.

  • How to create path with arrowhead?

    Hello. I have a document with a single path in it. How can I apply arrowhead efect to this path? I tried using Beautiful strokes suite, but was only able to get arrowhead from existing path. How can I get one if there is no path with arrowheads in the document?

    Yeah, it's really not obvious at all how to do this.
    The key is to use the AIBeautifulStrokesSuite. The steps are as follows:
    Get the art style of the path (AIArtStyleSuite::GetArtStyle()).
    Parse the style (AIArtStyleParserSuite::NewParser(), ParseStyle()).
    Get the focus stroke (AIArtStyleParserSuite::GetFocusStroke), which gets you an AIParserPaintField.
    Populate the AIParserPaintField into a CPaintField (see below for code)
    Use AIBeautifulStrokesSuite::SetArrowheadOptions, and pass CPaintField::GetEffectsDictionary() to the first parameter.
    Call CPaintField::Save().
    Create a new art style (AIArtStyleParserSuite::CreateNewStyle()).
    Apply the style to the path (AIArtStyleSuite::SetArtStyle()).
    Dispose of the parser (AIArtStyleParserSuite::DisposeParser()).
    Note that I was only interested in the 'main' stroke so I used the focus stroke (which in 99% of cases will be the only stroke). If you want to handle multiple strokes, you can iterate over all the paint fields in the style by calling AIArtStyleParserSuite::CountPaintFields() on your parser after parsing the style. You just have to test each one to see if its a stroke or a fill, since obviously you can't apply arrowheads to fills!
    The arrow head itself is set by passing in an AIPatternHandle, which is the handle to a symbol. You can set the start or end, and the other parameters are just the scale to use for the symbols and the alignment of the arrowheads (ArrowTipAlignment, found in AIBeautifulStrokes.h). The standard arrowheads are stored in an AI file in found in Support Files\Required\Resources\en_US (or whatever your language is). You get the path to this folder at runtime using AIFolders::FindFolder() and passing it kAIRequiredLocalizedResourcesFolderType. The filename is Arrowheads.ai.
    If you want to read the AI file as a library, you need to use AIPathStyleSuite::ImportStyles(). You pass it the path to the AI file and it will give you an AIDocumentHandle in return. You can use this handle with methods like AISymbolSuite::GetNthSymbolPatternFromDocument(). Just be sure to retarget anything you load for your current document; to do that, you use AISymbolSuite::RetargetForCurrentDocument(). If you don't retarget the style, you'll add a reference to art that doesn't exist in your document and when you close Illustrator, it will crash (because it will try to free up the symbol twice, once for your document & once for the library you loaded, but it only existed once!).
    CPaintField is a little utility class I created that basically wraps some code I was given by Adobe, so I'm happy to share it. Its useful whenever you're dealing with AIBeautifulStrokesSuite type stuff. THROW_EXCEP_IF() is a macro we use that checks error to see if its kNoErr, and if its not, we throw an exception. You can replace that with your own error checking, or just remove them, as you wish
