Scale Quality

I'm using Premiere Pro CS4 (v4.2.1.0) on Windows Vista.
I took an Anamorphic 1440 x 1080 HD Sequence and for delivery purposes put it in a 720 x 480 DV Sequence.  When I scaled the nested HD timeline down to fit the DV Sequence I was really unimpressed with the scale quality.  I checked - the Program Monitor was set to Highest Quality and it was at 100% viewing ... but even when I thought, "well maybe the preview is eh/so-so and the final Export is better..." and rendered out the DV Sequence, the rendered result looked exactly pixel-for-pixel the same as the crummy preview in the Program.
It's like it's a half-way in between an aliased and antialiased scale.  Half Nearest Neighbor (to use a Photoshop term) and half say, Bicubic.  No, it's not an interlacing / progressive / lower fields / upper fields issue.  There is also no field doubling going on.
But when I took the 1440 x 1080 HD Sequence, rendered it out full-size and rez'd in down to DV in AFTER EFFECTS the result was gorgeous.
What gives?  Why can't Premiere Pro scale down with the same quality as After Effects?  I recall this being an issue a long time ago - has it REALLY not gone away?
Is there a workaround or even a third-party Transform plugin to bypass the native PPro scale setting?
Thanks
Marc

Marc,
As you have found, the Scaling algorithms in PrPro are not the best around. Jeff's method is very good. Some others will use AE for the down-scaling, and some use other programs for the encoding/transcoding. This is probably one area that Adobe should be looking to improve on.
Note: the same quality issues occur with over-sized still images and Scaling. For those, we recommend doing the resizing in Photoshop first, as the Scaling algorithms are better, and that program offers much more control on which one to use.
Good luck, and enjoy Jeff's tutorials,
Hunt

  • Percentage Scale for Appraisal

    Hi all,
    Good DAy!
I want to know how system will calculate the result in percentage.
    The Senario is as follows:
    1. each criterian has 10 points  On Scale (1-10)
Suppose there is 2 criterian so the system should calculate like
If the total of two criterian is 15:
    15/20*100 = 75
The system should give 75 as a result for this, but in my case it is not happenning.
I have created two scales for this:
    1. 1-10 value scale (Quality) weight 1
    2. 1-100 value scale (quality)
I have assigned each criterian 1-10 value scale and calculation is percentage based but it is not giving me the correct result.
because system is calculating like - (Weight * Rating)
Please suggest me the solution for this.
    Thanks & regards,

  • I have Mac OS X 10.6.8 and am trying to change a printer to black and white/gray scale. All the posts I find refer to a button for Paper Quality. This does not appear on my options. Just paper handling which does not have a function to change from colour.

I cannot change the printer settings on my MacBook Pro to gray scale from colour. there is no function for Paper quality, just paper handling. any suggestions greatly appreciated - as long as they work!!

Was the printer instance properly configured when created, so the print subsystem picked the correct PPD and knows of all the device's capabilities? If in doubt, erase and create anew so you can confirm that the printer maker/model/version is getting correctly identified. This may trigger Software Update to download & install a printer update. The menus available on the print dialog depend on what the OS knows the printer can do. For instance, this is what I get in Safari's print dialog when using an HP 2550Ln color laser at the office:

  • Determine/Reset Scale of Linked Graphics - Maximize Image Quality

Hi, we're currently using Illustrator CS4 for website comps to quickly mock-up pages for our clients to sign-off (we've explored using Fireworks, but there's just some major things missing that we need in regards to typography, global swatches, etc.).
But we would like to generate some final images from these files as well for the sake of efficiency, as I believe Illustrator is 'supposed' to use the same Save for Web interface as Photoshop. It's just very efficient for us to have our slices designed, setup, optimized and named in this same master document.
But I ran a test comparing the results when generating a final JPEG from Illustrator vs. Photoshop using the same exact settings, and on a file that was 100% of final size. But the Photoshop file was significantly sharper. So I investigated a bit more and found out that the image was scaled just a bit in Illustrator (maybe 110% or less). When I got the image to be as close to 100% as possible in Illustrator, the differences were negligible.
    - So what is the quickest/easiest method of resetting an imported image to 100% of the actual size in Illustrator?
I look at the Transform palette (where I would see the scaling in InDesign), but it doesn't tell me anything. I had to look into the Link Information in the links palette to find the scale, but I can't change anything from there.
    - Any other tips for keeping linked files looking as good and sharp as possible all the way through the process to Saving for Web?
    - If the original image has been retouched and optimized (it's a high quality image) in Photoshop before importing into Illustrator, 'SHOULD' the results from Illustrator match Photoshop when using Save for Web and the same settings?
THANKS! It is much more efficient for us to save our graphics from Illustrator, but we can't risk losing image quality in the process.

Yeah, I see that as long as the image has a resolution of 72dpi, it does come in at 100% of size. ..
For what you want to achieve  you are right, sort of, but your statement is wrong.
Images are always placed at 100% size as indicated in the info when you double click the links in the Links palette. However you have to understand what size means here. If the image has metadata containing dimensional information then that is the size in Illustrator. For example if the metadata says 5 x 5 inches it will be placed as 100% with that size according to the Illustrator's rulers regardless of what the pixel resolution of the linked image is - it can be 5 or 5000 pixels per inch. If the images don't have metadata describing the dimensions then Illustrator assumes that 72 pixels are 1 inch and will place the image with that size at 100% scale. For example if the image is with 720 x 720 pixels, Illustrator will show it as 10 x 10 inches at 100% scale.
With work for the web you are most interested in the pixel size of the images and objects. Change the units in File > Document Setup to Pixels. But have in mind that these are 72 pixels occupying one inch on the ruler in Illustrator and not the pixel resolution of the linked images. So, the Transform palette showing the selected images or objects with pixel dimensions will matter if you save for the web or export to a raster image file format where you can specify the pixel dimensions of the image. The pixel dimensions in Illustrator will not matter at all if you print the illustrator file in which case the resolution of the linked images will be used - not the pixel space they occupy in Illustrator. But for the Web all that matters is the pixel dimensions in Illustrator. So if you want the ppi (pixels per inch) in Illustrator to match the actual ppi resolutions of the placed images (links), you have to save all images from Photoshop as 72 ppi or remove their metadata. This will ensure that no resampling occurs when you save images at 100% scale from illustrator for the web .
In Photoshop you can use its automatd batch processing features to change quickly the ppi of multiple images.
As for the resampling of the scaled images I believe Illustrator and Photoshop use the same algorithms

  • Vector Smart Object inside another smart object losing quality after scale

    Hi,
I have 6 icons created on Illustrator and imported as vector smart objects.
Then, I select all 6 and create another Smart Object from then.
If I scale this smart object now, it will loose it´s quality, as if the icons were raster in the first place.
This was not what happend in in PS CS5.
It´s a bug or new "feature"?
    Rodrigo C.

You need to realize that Photoshop renders pixels for the embedded object  then when you scale the smart object layer it scale like and raster layer through interpolation not scaled with vector graphics. Its the way smart object layers work. Hers is a very old thread on the subject

  • Scale without lose quality

Video that will be sell on DVD. My video is 1920x1080 30fps.
There are few clips that need to be zoom in but I want to know if there are can be scale 150% without lose quality.
Is there any filter to prevent it? Or just limit percent on scale?
I saw somewhere there has some kind of filter for photoshop that can zoom to eye from full body without lose quality.
Thought maybe somewhere there is for final cut pro 7.

    >I want to know if there are can be scale 150% without lose quality.
Nope.  If you zoom in that much, you are blowing up the video by 50%. You are making the compression artifacts associated with that format bigger.
    >Is there any filter to prevent it?
    Nope.
    >Or just limit percent on scale?
20% is typically the most you can do without being noticed.  50%...yeah, that will be noticable.
Photoshop...stills...you are dealing with a lot more pixels, a lot more detail (depending on the still) than video.  Video is 72dpi...period.  And your dimensions are 1920x1080.  That's all you got.

  • "Scale to Frame Size" option - won't I lose quality?

    Hello,
I have a sequence in 720p and I have most of the videos in 1080p. I want to scale all of them once, so I select them all, go to Clip->Video Options->Scale to Frame Size. But, the Scale Size shows all the time as a 100%, even after the clips are scaled down.
Question 1: Won't I lose quality if I will zoom in (but go not further than 1080p)?
Question 2: Also, I understand, that I cannot go further than 150%, right?
    Thank you.

I do not want to scale (Using Motion->Scale) each clip separately. I want to do it for all clips
Jeff has it technically right, but missed part of the question.
I believe the remaining part of the question is "How do I set every 1080 frame to 67% so I can use that as a starting point? All at once."
Answer: Set one clip to 67%. Copy that clip. Then, select all of the other clips and "Paste Attributes".  Now all of them will be set at 67% and if you decide to zoom in to 100% you will have no quality loss.
Be sure to do that before you change any other attributes of that clip. If you have, don't worry. Just turn off that effect temporarily so you can copy just the motion effect

  • Scale to frame size: clip lose quality

    Hi
    I'm working with Premiere CS3.
    I captured a clip from a Sony HVR-Z1E over IEEE1394 in a HDV Project. Settings: HDV 1080i, 25.00 Frames/Second, HD Anamorphic 1080 (1,333), upper field first.
Afterwards I import the clip in a DV Project. Settings DV PAL, 25.00 Frames/Second,D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1, 422), upper field first.
In the timeline, I scale down the clip manually (under effectsettings/ move/scale)the clip to 53.3%. The clip lose quality. Pixels seems to be bigger. The same also happens if I check "scale to frame size".
Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.
    Regards, Corinne

    Hi
Thanks for your reply. Yes that's right. But in CS2 the lose of quality was much smaller then in CS3. The clip was after scaling to 53.3% still useful. That can't be the problem.
I thought thath SD DV is upper field?
    regards, Corinne

  • Scale??  Does decreasing a clips scale have the same effect on quality as..

Does decreasing a clips scale have the same effect on quality as increasing? So for example if i lower the scale to 90 is the compression that takes place as bad for image quality as increasing an image? or is it better? thanks kellam

Well, taking the example you mentioned, if you decrease or increase the size of the image, it doesn't have to affect the original quality of your media. Of course, if you increase the image size, the quality will be "poor" in the sense that you are zooming to the details of your image. Depending on the compression you are working on, the more compression have (DV as lowest), the more decreasing on the sharpness will happen in the increasing of the picture.
Increasing doesn't gets better than decreasing.
Sometimes I work with photos in FCP, and to prevent this loss, I save the photo in 1440x960 to keep the most definition that a picture can give me, when the zooming in time would arrive, that Image Size covers me up on keeping a good quality in my Final result, is simply the double of the standard.
Obviusly, decreasing does not affect so much in quality.
    Hope this helps

  • Changes, or loss of quality when changing from Indexed Colour to RGB or Gray Scale?

I am using a canon scanner 700 to scan old photographs and plans/maps for high resolution publication. The plans and photographs are both in colour and in bl/wh and grayscale. I usually scan in gray scale unless its an important, coloured plan.
I am unable to scan through c5 for some reason. Its a 64 bit dell M4400, W7. All legal, all working fine.
I use the program canon supplies (Canon MP Navigator EX 2.1) and choose grayscale, 1200 dpi. No problem so far. Output seems great when I open in photoshop.
However, the files open in Indexed Colour mode, and not grey scale as I scanned them in.
    My questions are :
    a) why does it open in indexed colour mode?
    b) is there any loss of information if I simply change them into grey scale?
I need the files in high res for professional publication in large format, but also for analysis of dimensions. So I cannot afford ANY transformation or loss of info.
Hope somebody can help me out!

  • Photoshop poor transformation quality (rotation and scale at once)

When smart object, or layer are transformed (rotation and scale) at once, that cause bad result. Unnecessary work around is rotate object first, then convert to another smart object and then scale it.

As far as I know with a SO the work-around should not make a difference (and in a quick test on my station it did not).
Edit: Sorry, I had read inattentively and missed that you converted the SO to a SO again – that does make a difference naturally.
You could change your Perferences > General > Image Interpolation setting.

  • Motion automatically reduces quality on images I scale down!

Hey everyone. First time poster here.
I'm working in an NTSC DV project. I've got a very simple logo, multi-layered, in photoshop, which I've imported into Motion retaining all the layers. It's just a series of rounded-edge squares:
    http://www.bogada.net/support/example-1.jpg
Image size on the logo is ~900px by 800px.
but when I scale them waaaaay down - the idea is to have these flowers "bloom" - they completely lose their contours. It seems that as any one of the objects hits 10% scale, it switches over to a low-res version and I lose my detail.
    http://www.bogada.net/support/settings-1.gif
    http://www.bogada.net/support/settings-2.gif
This is a problem, since, as you can see, I'm over a solid white background and as these animated flowers bloom, our viewers can clearly see hard-cornered squares "pop" to rounded squares as they scale up past 10%:
    http://www.bogada.net/support/example_animation.mov
With twenty of these on the screen, and some of them animating slowly, it's pretty apparent.
My anti-aliasing is set to best, and I've combed through all the preferences, but can't find anything else that seems relevant.
I know it's got to just be some checkbox someplace. Thanks in advance for all your help, guys.

I don't think there's anything going on here - you're dropping below the ability of the pixels to distinguish the curve there. The same thing happens in PhotoShop when I drop below 10% or so...
Something that can smooth the zoom is to put a slight blur on the image when it's further away and take it away as it comes closer... like this:

  • Square pixel footage to DVD - scale and quality problems

i've got footage from DVDs that i've captured using handbrake. This gives me quicktime movies (mp4 format) that are 720 by whatever the height of the original movie - minus the black bars. So for a letterbox clip that i've captures the dimensions are 720 x 336.
I want to edit the clip in final cut pro and burn back onto DVD. The mp4 clip has been ripped using a high data rate and the quality is fine. If I set up the sequence settings to be identical to the clip (720 x 336, square pixels, field dominance none, output mp4) then it looks fine in fcp and doesn't need rendering.
But this file is no good to use in DVD studio pro as it stretches the clip vertially to meet the 720 x 576 DVD resolution.
If i change the sequence resolution to 720x576 it seems to letterbox it fine and now it needs rendering, but when rendered i get a lot of boxy artifacts appearing in the video (the footage has a pure blue background so really suffers from any compression issues)
How do i set this up to make a DVD
    DP Mirror door G4 867Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Arrrrrrr!
Sounds like we have arrrrselves a pirate!
Wether it be 4:3 or 16:9 you'll have to be puttin' that footage in a sequence that studio pro will be able to digest. You're going to have the bars regardless.
Figure on making it right for your final output.
I guess it's some kind of TV.
Still you can put it one of those two conver to MPEG2 and it'll work for ya just fine.

  • Is it possible to scale Illustrator files inside After Effects and retain the vector quality?

I imported an Illustrator file into my After Effects project and scaled the ai file to 200%, but noticed that is pixelated.  Is there a way to keep the ai file vector based inside After Effects.

  • How can i choose a lower quality print density when printing from firefox on my Mac. I cant move the slider along the scale ( I can when printing from the computer).

I can't change the print density when printing from Firefox. It is set at standard and although there is a "slider button" to use for choosing less or more density, it can't be moved. I can tick "grayscale". I can choose the density when printing from the computer. I have a Mac

I also have this problem where I used to be able to shrink a 2 page doc to a single page. Since upgrade to FF4 it no longer works - but you can choose say 60% and it will work. All used to work fine in FF3
