Scaling content and frame simultaneously

I think the best way to explain our problem is by explaining what we want to do.
We've recently upgraded to CS3 from CS1. In CS1, we would place advertisements in our magazines. The ads might sometimes have a white frame around them (no chance of eliminating them, so not a viable solution). Since the ads didn't always come in perfectly proportioned to their placements, we had to sometimes resize the ads manually, so what we did is we placed the ad image in the file, drew in the frames around the ad (to eliminate the collateral white border) and then use the manual sizing on the top toolbar to resize the ad (at times disproportionately) to its placement. But the content would also resize inside the frame.
This, however cannot be done in CS3, as far as I can see. We follow all of these steps, up to the last step where we manually enter the new size, except when we do that, the content in the frame does not change at all. The frame instead just cuts into the content.
Fitting content to frame doesn't work either, because of that white border that's part of the content to begin with. Does anyone know what option we may set to make this back to how it operated in CS1?

I'm worried about your statement "drew in the frames around the ad." Did you draw something new? The ad should come in with a frame, and if you draw a new frame, it may not be associated in any way with the ad. I do this all the time in CS3 and CS4, and both the frame and content resize together when I click on the scale buttons in the toolbar.
1. Place the item on the page.
2. With the solid arrow tool, click on the object and move in the edges of its frame to where you want them, getting rid of white space.
3. Move the object so that two sides are where you want them (for instance, the top and left line up with the columns or guides).
4. With the tool-bar's "reference point" chosen appropriately (the top left of the object in this example), use the scale items in the toolbar to scale the object up or down. Both the frame and the content should be affected. Or, alternately, click on the lower right corner of the object, and while holding shift and command, move the bottom corner to scale. (Holding command means that the content is resized along with the frame, shift means that the horizontal and vertical scaling will be identical.)

  • Scaling images and text in indesign CC

    Indesign CC (MAC 10.8.4)
    Hi, I'm a long time user of indesign and I'm having a real problems with scaling text and image boxs. Can't believe I'm asking having to ask this question, it's such a basic function!!
    If I use cmd or cmd+shift none of the content scales.
    Is there a new check box or a preference I need to change?
    Thanks in advance!

    There's no change in the way scaling works in InDesign CC. Cmd+Shift-scaling adjusts the content with the frame.
    Things to try out: (1) Restoring your preferences. (2) Looking for applications that conflict with the shortcuts. (For example, I found the password protector 1Password conflicts with InDesign.)

  • Putting Content in frame

    I have created a simple web page with three tables.
    The top one has a logo; the second a set of menus generated
    using PopMenu Magic by PVII. The third contains the content, and
    with incredible brilliance, has the id "content."
    I would like to make the web pages selected by the menu items
    open in the third table/frame so that the top two remain visible
    (and the menus accessible) all the time.
    However adding target-frame="content" to the href tag still
    makes the page open in a new window.
    What am I missing here?

    > What am I missing here?
    Alot. This is a commonly sought goal by new developers since
    it *would*
    simplify their lives consderably if it could be done easily.
    It's not so
    easy.
    You can use an IFrame, but then you marry the 900 pound
    gorilla of frames.
    You can use a server-side include there, but then you a) have
    to understand
    how includes work, and b) have to figure out how to write the
    server
    scripting to make the includes get written based on which
    button was
    clicked, and c) have to know how to do server scripting in
    the first place.
    For now just make one page link to another page, each with
    different
    content, and take it one step at a time.
    And by the way, get a good book (or even a bad one) on HTML.
    The more you
    know about this the easier your learning curve will be.....

  • RH7: Map ID and Frame Topic-Splitting

    Greetings. Hope someone could help with the following:
    I've created a very simple Frame file with two 'Heading2'
    paragraphs and a handful of other paragraphs types to describe
    contents.
    For illustration purposes, let's say the Map file I have
    received form my developer has exactly two entries:
    HIDD_APP_PREF_FIRST_DIALOG 0x200E8
    HIDD_APP_PREF_SECOND_DIALOG 0x200E9
    At the beginning of each paragraph I have inserted a custom
    marker with the name 'HelpMarker'.
    (Question 1) What is the exact text that should go in each
    marker text box?
    When I add my Frame file by reference, I specify 'HelpMarker'
    in the 'Define Context-Sensitive Help Marker' text box.
    In the 'Style Settings' dialog...
    -- I specify 'H2' as the 'User-Defined HTML Tag'
    -- I check 'Heading 2' for pagination settings and click
    'Finish'.
    Once the Frame file has been processed I have only one topic.
    I would expect to have two.
    (Question 2) What should be done differently to have one
    topic per 'Heading 2' paragraph type in my original Frame document/
    When done

    First the answer to your following question
    (b) Must I manually match the hypertext marker with a topic
    using the 'Edit Map IDs Dialog'?
    Yes, you are correct in the understanding that "this is the
    traditional way of accomplishing the required task". So, this is
    one possible way but this can be done in a better way using
    FrameMaker integration feature.
    It provides a different automated flow for creating Context
    Sesitive Help map IDs which is discussed below.
    So coming to your another question
    (a) Does the marker 'automatically' map the topic if the
    string it contains forms a match with an entry in the .hm file
    provided by the developer?
    The answer to this question is "No. Although it works
    automatically but not in this manner."
    There is a little difference in the flow that RoboHelp
    provides and the approach that your developer and help author are
    expecting.
    According to my understanding here is your developer and help
    author's approach. Please correct me if my understanding is not
    right.
    1. Developer uses Map IDs in his application.
    2. He puts all the Map IDs along with their values in a .hm
    file.
    3. That .hm file is provided to the help author.
    4. Help author is suppossed to make use of those Map IDs
    present in the .hm file in the Context Sensitive Help he develops.
    5. Help author inserts those Map IDs in the marker text in
    FrameMaker document(s) and expects RoboHelp to make use of the same
    .hm file as provided by the developer for mapping.
    Here is the flow in RoboHelp.
    1. Help Author inserts his own Map IDs as marker text in the
    FrameMaker document. (e.g. HIDD_APP_PREF_FIRST_DIALOG)
    2. Help Author mentions the name of the marker in RoboHelp
    during Add/Import of FrameMaker document.
    3. RoboHelp reads the marker, marker text and the document
    content and generates Context Sensitive Help Map IDs. It also
    generates a .h (equivalent to .hm) file.
    4. This .h file is provided by the help author to the
    developer to be used in his application.
    As we can see in one approach .h file is generated first and
    in the second flow .h file is generated at the end.
    As of now, one possible way is to use the RoboHelp's approach
    and ask the developer to use RoboHelp generated map ID file.
    Another possible way is
    1. Create a copy of the .hm file provided by the developer
    and convert it to the following format
    #define HIDD_APP_PREF_FIRST_DIALOG 0x200E8
    #define HIDD_APP_PREF_SECOND_DIALOG 0x200E9
    2. Close the RoboHelp project.
    3. Rename the above copy of file with the RoboHelp's CSH
    mapping file(BSSCDefault.h by default). And replace Robohelp's
    mapping file with this copy.
    4. Open the project and you will find the map ids as provided
    by the developer.
    And answer to your following query
    Could you please explain each class of entry that I see here
    and how they are to be used in this context?
    Robohelp's Edit Map IDs functionality is a RoboHelp's generic
    functionaliity and is not specific to FrameMaker integration
    feature.
    A help author using FrameMaker integration feature need not
    open this dialog ever if he uses the RoboHelp's approach as
    described above.
    However, for other users this feature provides the
    funcionality of creating Context Sensitive Help for any topic or
    bookmark present in the project.
    Since, topics and bookmarks generated during a FrameMaker
    document Add/Import are no different from the generic topics and
    bookmarks in RoboHelp, they are also listed and can be mapped from
    the dialog.

  • Fitting Content to Frame to a Path or Mask

    We have been asked by a customer to try and achieve the following:
    They have a number of eps's of a flat screen TV's. For each TV, there is a path around the outside. We will call this Path 1. There is a second path around the screen of the TV. We will call this Path 2.
    Is there a way of placing another image, and fitting content to frame (just like in Indesign), using Path 2 as the bounding box?
    We are using both CS3 and CS4.

    Mark, while Scripts may not be necessary they can add a level of convenience unattainable with Actions.
    As concerns the PAID HELP, the Photoshop Scripting Forum has a couple regulars who, while they may offer their services professionally, still give their advice freely; but in case Adam has no Scripting-experience his needs, should he choose to try a Scripting-solution, might exceed »advice«.
    Having only recently started to appreciate and utilize the capabilities of JavaScript for Photoshop myself I may appear overzealous in advocating it, but everybody will have to decide for themselves if they want to give it a try.
    With possibly hundreds of images I wouldnt want to rely on the screens (or their paths) to all have the same diameter and a Script can allow for that with transforming the placed image according to the height or width so as to always fill the area completely (thus clipping at the top/bottom or left/right depending on the relation).
    And (though too complicated for myself) it would be possible to let Photoshop work off folders and not get stuck by the occasional file that doesnt conform to the naming conventions or lacks a path by ignoring it and documenting unedited files at the end.
    Thats always assuming that the photographs of the tv-sets are fairly frontal, because if they are in perspective then the matter gets much more complicated, but what with the allusion to doing it in Indesign I concluded perspectival transformation isnt required anyway.

  • CS4 fit content to frame default

    Hi all,
    Just a quicky, we have just upgraded to CS4 at work (late adopters I know!) and we have an issue with how ID CS4 fits the frame to content by default.  The problem with this is it is changing templates of material built in earlier versions of ID, for instance changing ellipse frames to squares, resizing all the frames to fit the content, etc. Is it possible to change this default behavior? All help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Guys,
    Thanks for the responses and I apologise for the delay in replying, it has been flat out here... Anyway I just want to confirm that the problem still exists. I am unsure how to explain it further although I will try
    When the frame fitting option is set to 'fit content to frame' Indesign applies a 'fit frame to content' which the operator must then undo. This especially occurs when placing content into ellipse or polygon frames. Indesign always applies a "fit the frame to content" (which obviously blows away the shape), the operator must then undo the 'fit frame to content' that CS4 automatically applies (crtl+z).
    Not sure it is related but we also suffer from a one minute delay upon opening Indesign and Acrobat, the windows "csrss.exe" process goes nuts and sits on nearly 100% cpu usage for about a minute before the program becomes usable. It seems related to the number of fonts installed on the system (around 2000) because if I remove all the fonts, delete the adobefnt files and reinstall the fonts the machine runs fine for a week or so before it bogs down again. I know that this file is not a virus, as we run symantec on our machines, also there is only one copy of this process in taskmanager. Also this has happened across multiple machines with varying hardware. Is there a hard limit on fonts?
    Thanks again

  • Tables: Fit Content to Frame

    (InDesign CS2)
    Since "fit frame to content" is available when you select a frame that contains a table, but "fit content to frame" is not...I'm assuming it's not possible to do that.
    I understand that a table can lie well within or outside of its frame, and that can be a nice thing. However, what if I want to make sure the boundaries of the actual table, left to right, take up an EXACT width? Seems like making the frame the exact width I need and then having "fit content to frame" available is what I need.
    Am I missing something? Does anyone have a good workaround?

    Lisa,
    This script will do the job (although the interface is a bit primitive. Just type a number in the units you're using for the horizontal ruler. It displays the "before width" and you can then type the number you want instead. It distributes the extra or the deficit across the existing columns of the table.
    //DESCRIPTION: Set Width of Table
    // by Dave Saunders
    if ((app.documents.length == 0) || (app.selection.length == 0)) { beep() }
    aDoc = app.activeDocument;
    aSel = app.selection[0];
    aTable = findTable(aSel);
    tWidth = prompt("Table width", String(aTable.width));
    if ((tWidth == null) || (tWidth == "")) { exit() }
    n = aTable.columnCount;
    w = aTable.width;
    for (j = n-1; j >= 0; j--) {
      aTable.columns[j].width = aTable.columns[j].width * (tWidth)/w;
    function findTable(obj) {
      if (obj.constructor.name == "Table") { return obj }
      while (obj.constructor.name != "Table") {
        obj = obj.parent;
        if (obj.constructor.name == "Application") {
          errorExit("Can't locate table");
      return obj;
    function errorExit(message) {
      if (arguments.length > 0) {
        if (app.version != 3) { beep() } // CS2 includes beep() function.
        alert(message);
      exit(); // CS exits with a beep; CS2 exits silently.
    To use the script, copy and paste to ExtendScript Toolkit and save with an appropriate name in the form YourName.jsx in the Scripts folder of the Presets folder of your InDesign CS2 folder (you could put it in a subfolder if you wish). Then to run the script, set-up the appropriate initial conditions (click with the text tool in the table) and double-click the script's name in the Scripts palette.

  • After using modify/contents some frames go out of stage dimension

    Hello,
    I have a question to all you animators out there.
    I work in after effects and sometimes do some simple illustrations/animations in flash - where I usually switch the bg colour to gray
    as not to see the stage rectangular as it's distracting to me. Then when I have my drawings and a few different frames done I go to
    modify/ choose bg colour to white and check contents to frame all the content inside the document - then I want to export it to swf
    so I can use it in after effects.
    At this point all seems fine, all the frames are in place, however I noticed that frequently when I reopen my flash documet after having done this some frames are outside
    the white stage box (usually later frames, the 1st is in place).
    How do you deal with this?

    Hi all,
    Sorry for the slow response - as I'm sure you can understand, running lots of exports takes a few days and so it's taken me a while to test your suggestions properly.
    The render completes using the media encoder without crashing (MPEG2 Blu-ray and H.264 Blue Ray both worked), however the picture quality has really blurred:
    Original:
    MPEG2 Blu-Ray
    I also ran it in H.264 Blur-ray and this also appeared blurry. Apologies for lack of a screenshot, I deleted the export to conserve disk space.
    This is very similar to the problems I had under File => Export => Movie, which went away after I tweeked the export settings to match as closely as possible the footage (however Premiere then crashed when I tried to export the entire movie rather than just a clip).
    Working settings under File => Export which crashed Premiere but prevented the blurriness:
    Export
    Video and audio
    Entire Sequence
    Filetype
    QuickTime
    Video Settings
    Compressor: H.264
    Frame size: 1280h 720v (1.000)
    Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
    Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)
    Audio Settings
    Compressor: Uncompressed
    Sample rate: 48000 samples/second
    Channels: Stereo
    Sample type: 16-bit
    Settings under Adobe Media Encoder
    Any thoughts what I'm doing wrong? This is starting to get really frustrating and I'm genuinely wondering if Premiere is suitable for what I'm trying to do. I've another project a month late in getting started because I want to get Premiere to export this so I know I'm not going to run into the same problems again - but I really don't know what else to try? Any ideas?

  • Is it possible to do the audio capture and playback simultaneously?

    In short :
    Is it possible to do the audio capture and playback simultaneously? . If it is not supported directly by Sun, pl suggest another way to achieve the same.
    In detail:
    I am doing a voice chat application by using the streaming through UDP . I am able to play the byte stream. But , is it possible to capture sound simultaneously (while playing the audio) to send to the other end?
    Edited by: dhillarun on Jan 4, 2008 7:11 AM

    If you're Airplaying from you computer, you might be able to do this. Here's what I would try:
    Go to the Airplay icon in iTunes. You should see both your Apple TV and your speakers listed as options. Select "Multiple speakers." You'll see both devices together. Turn the volume all the way down on the Apple TV. You should be getting the video on the TV, but only hear audio through the speakers.
    Using the "Multiple Speakers" option will sync the output of your devices so that the sound matches the picture.
    I haven't tried this myself, but I'm thinking this would work. However, this approach will only work when using Airplay from your computer – not from am iPad or iPhone – as they don’t have the "Multiple Speakers" option (as far as I know). It also won't work with content streamed directly to your ATV, obviously, because there's no way to stream from ATV to other devices.
    Let me know if this works.

  • A frame failed to render while using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously

    Hello fellow AE users:
    I've read other threads which deal with this issue, however they don't seem to be exactly what I'm experiencing so I'm starting a new thread. I did do several hours of due diligence by research others' handling of this issue, so I'm not just blindly reposting this question without having done some legwork.
    I'm getting this message when rendering one of my compositions:
    "After Effects warning: A frame failed to render while using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously. Allocating more memory to the background processes in Memory & Multiprocessing Preferences may fix this problem. (26  ::  142)"
    First, some background on what led up to this. I've built an entirely new system from scratch based on the new Intel 5960X 8-Core processor, with 64GB of RAM on an Asus X99-Deluxe Mobo.Brand new install of Windows 8.1, and brand new install of After Effects CC (latest versions as of this posting) and all of my plug-ins (mostly Red Giant, also all updated to current versions.) I have a new video card in this system (Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming) however this issue also happened with my old 4GB GTX 680 as well, which was in the original i7-950 system (see below.)
    I've set up Multiprocessing preferences for 6GB reserved for system, 8 CPUs reserved for other applications which leaves "Actual CPUs that will be used: 8", with each CPU having a 6GB RAM allocation. That's 8x6=46G, leaving 18GB free for the operating system, which should be more than enough.
    One could speculate that there is some plug-in that is using too much memory, or something weird with QuickTime or H.264 decoding (the source is one Canon 5D mk II H.264 .mov and one jpeg file). However, this issue did *NOT* happen on my old system, which was 4-core Intel i7-950, 24GB RAM, running the same version of After Effects CC and my plug-ins, and with only 3GB/Thread of ram allocated instead of the 6GB/Thread i'm using here.
    I've simply loaded the old project on the new install and attempted to render. I have not changed any settings. I DID do the thing where you hold CTRL-SHIFT-ALT (or something like that) to reset all of the preferences when loading AE just in case that was the issue.
    So, why would this be able to render using multiple processes on my old box with only 3GB/thread, while it will NOT render on this new system with double that, 6GB/thread allocated?
    Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide that would be helpful to debug this.
    Many thanks in advance for your help!

    Thank you very much for the quick reply, Todd. I'll give that a shot. There also seems to be a problem with the Red Giant Cosmo plug-in. I get Cosmo engine initialization failures, but it's intermittent.

  • Ram Preview won't start when Render multiple frames simultaneously enabled

    Hello everyone,
    I have an issue with rendering AE CC , with my new PC computer in Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit
    As the title says , my issue is Ram Preview won't start when Render multiple frames simultaneously enabled. Actually it starts after 8 -30 seconds depending of project complexity and the rendering is slower and skipping frames !
    12 cores with 2 GB ram each.
    When I disable the option of multiple frames simultaneously render starts ok.
    but it's really very sad that I can't use this beast of CPU in full potential. its an new intel i7 5930K , 32 Ram DDR4 2.4 Ghz
    Any advice and options would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Vonzar.
    Setup:
    Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit
    CPU : Intel Core i7 5930K 3.5 GHz Six Core Socket 2011-3 140W Box
    GPU : nVidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB DDR5 PCI-E
    RAM : 32GB DDR4 Non ECC CL16 2400MHz Crucial Ballistix Sport
    Mother board : Asrock x99 extreme 6

    If you have any render or preview problems just turn off MP because, first, it only works with certain specific effects and codecs, and 2, it causes more problems that it solves most of the time. I only turn on MP rendering when I know for sure that it will speed up my workflow.
    You should have a multiple of 4 GB assigned to AE and Other apps and an even number of cores. If you are using MP rendering make sure that the number of actual cores used makes sense and that there are an even number of cores assigned to other applications. Most important of all, don't spend hours trying to tweak MP rendering to save a few seconds in a render. Follow these general guidelines and then run a short test to see if it works. If you project involves any temporal effects at all turn it off.
    Here is an example of the MP settings for a 4 year old Mac Mini that actually work for some projects, but most of the time it is turned off.
    I should say that I can allocate 3 GB of ram per background CPU and still see 2 as the actual CPU's that will be used but this little Mac Mini works better with 2 selected. Setting the RAM allocation to 4 GB drops Actual CPU's to 0
    BTW, I use the mac mini to record most of my tutorials because I figure that if I do a tutorial that will run OK on a Mac Mini, then anyone with an adequate system should be able to follow along without any problems.

  • AE 2014 Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously issues

    This problem is two fold and I've experienced it for years.  Now I'm using a much faster system that is handicapped by not being able to use multiple cores.  I had hoped that by now this would just work.
    First, when using multiframe rendering AE often hangs attempting to initialize background processes.  As often as one RAM previews this can be quite a problem since it grinds all progress to a halt.  The solution is often restarting AE.  Checking Activity Monitor during this time shows that Adobe QT32 server is non-responsive and a whole line of the AE background rendering processes doing nothing.  I have not found a common element in projects that experience this issue, it can happen just with text on a solid.
    Secondly, when using multiframe rendering an entire sequence can ram preview, but then disappear as soon as it finishes.  Often after this issue the first issue will pop-up.
    A little about my setup:
    Late 2013 Mac Pro 8-Core
    64 GB Ram
    2x AMD FirePro D700
    OS X 10.9.4
    AE CC 2014 Updated to the latest patch
    Settings:
    52 GB RAM available for AE
    Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously - ON
    Only for Render Que - OFF
    RAM per CPU - 4 GB (problem persists when set to 6 GB)
    Until this feature actually works reliably I'll have to go back single frame rendering, which is a bit like owning a Ferrari and having a transmission stuck in first gear.

    warning “RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames” after scrubbing audio in After Effects CC 2014 (13.0)

  • Why is "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously" greyed out?

    In Preferences -> Memory & Multiprocessing, the "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously" option is greyed out.  Any idea why?
    System:
    Win 7 64bit
    AE CC Trial version
    4Gb RAM
    2.5Gb available for AE
    6 core CPU
    Just say if you need more info.

    It might be because you don't have enough RAM for that. You want 2-4 GB of RAM per core of your processor for using multiple cores. And you need to leave 2 GB or so free for the operating system and other computer tasks.

  • OpenGL vs "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously"

    My first post on these forums (Like to learn on my own ).  This question(s) accually has to do more with RAM and rendering in general.
    1.) Is OpenGL rendering faster (With a GTX 460) or is Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously faster (Athlon II x3 445)?  I read on one of the FAQ that you can only use one or the other.
    2.) After Effects will stop rendering with at least 10-20% RAM still left over and even call it complete.  Why is this?  I have tried every setting in the book and I can't get it to use any more RAM.  Also in the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously section I can't get the RAM avalaible for AE over 2.5GB.
    3.) What is the difference between the space bar and the 0 key?  As they both seem to do the same thing, and niether get very far into the movie before stopping.
    My System:
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
    AMD Athlon II x3 445 3.1Ghz
    GTX 460 OC'ed
    4GB 1600 RAM
    Small Boot Drive SSD
    This movie is really large (3000x2200ish), but should be able to render further along than it is (Less than 4 sec and 25% left over RAM)...
    Thanks Ahead

    They accelerate entirely different things. Don't use OpenGL for rendering for final export. I leave my preview mode set to OpenGL - Interactive, and that's it.

    You have 4GB of RAM? Your OS and other software need RAM, too. After Effects using 2.5GB out of 4GB is about right.

    Read the documentation:
    "Preview video and audio"
    The 0 key on the numeric keypad starts a RAM preview.

  • Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously

    I'm realy problem with Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously in AE.
    my system :RAM:18Gb - Cpu: Core i7 920 - Gpu:quadro 4000;
    when active  Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously in AE ,system hang .
    what best setting for this option ??

    Like Dave said, there's no perfect setting. It depends on the plug-ins in your normal workflow, the other apps you have open in your normal workflow, the codecs used for your normal footage. Adobe has no control over how 3rd party plug-ins, codecs, and other apps suck up memory so it takes a bit of experimentation. The guidelines are a good place to start. I didn't catch your OS. Anti virus software on Windows Boxes has been notorious for fouling up rendering. I haven't heard much lately, but if you're using MS I'd start there first.
