Scaling Photos

I'm confused on the best practice for handling photos which I might (or not), pan or zoom. I've heard that resizing in Photoshop is better than in Premiere--better interpolation algorithms. Let's say I plan to work with the native 3:2 aspect ratio of the images. If I'm editing at 720x1280, for example, my native RAW DSLR Canon 40 D image is 3888 x 2592, I would have to downsize in PS bringing my image to 25% of its original size (approximately) for it to fit the screen full image. Or I'd have to downsize to about 40-50% size if I want to leave room for zooming, panning etc. Or I can bring in the image at its natural size, scale to fit automatically, and then resize manually. Or do the same without clicking scale to fit. All of these work, but what is the best practice, maintaining optimal IQ of the image?
Thanks
kdoc

Kdoc,
Sorry that I did not state things clearly. Large still images require overhead to handle. I Scale to the Sequence's Frame Size, unless I will be doing Pans/Tiltson a Zoomed out image, and then will calculate how many pixels in which direction I need. That does take calculations, but will yield an image at the optimum size, with the smallest amount of processing overhead. Now, there WAS the benefit of better Scaling in PS, up to PrPro CS5. That benefit has been removed, as Scaling should be just as good, in PrPro CS5. Still, the overhead exists.
In your case, as you have not figured out the amount of Pan/Tilt on Zoomed out images yet, I'd go with a common size, that allows one some room to Pan/Tilt, when the image is Zoomed out. It will eliminate extraneous pixels and their overhead.
When you have animated the Pan/Tilts, if you find that you do not need all the pixels, you can Scale safely in PrPro, and I would use the fixed Effect>Motion>Scale. If you are going to want to Pan/Tilt on Zoomed out images, do not use Scale to Frame Size, as that will Scale your images TO the Sequence Frame Size, and you will then not have the necessary extra pixels to use, as the images will have been Scaled to the Frame Size.
If I had some images, that I knew would NOT involve Pans/Tilts, I would do a separate Scaling with Automation in PS. Often, I will end up with maybe three folders of stills: 1 where there will be zero Pans/Tilts, and these will be Scaled exactly to my Frame Size. Then, there will be another, where I will Scale less, leaving extra pixels for the Pans/Tilts, and possibly another folder, with images with even more pixels for a lot of Panning and/or Tilting.
Note: The term "Tilting" is used as it would be with a camera. In an NLE, the proper term would probably be "Vertical Pan," where the more traditional Pan would be "Horizontal Pan."
Good luck,
Hunt
PS - as for that image overhead, remember that the image has not been actually acted upon, when it's in the Timeline. All pixels are still there. What we have done, when we Scale in PrPro is to have written a set of instructions, telling the program what to do with that image, when we go to Export. What we see is but a representation of that Scaling.
PPS - also remember that all pixels beyond the Frame Size of the Sequence are not seen, as they are effectively cropped by the Frame Size dimensions. It's like having a 16 x 20 photograph, and a 20 x 24 matte, but with an 11 x 14 aperture in it. With Panning, we basically slide that photograph behind the aperture in the matte. We can only see the segments of that photograph through that aperture.

  • Scaling photos into Light Box or Slide show

I will look for a tutorial on this but...
I dont seem to be able to find a way that images (photos) of different sizes can be  correctly displayed to size and proportion in a Light Box or Slide Show.
I have tried the "fit" and proportion" options to no avail.  I thought these might auto scale the photos to fit but no luck.
Am I missing something or do these assets need to be created to size?
If so ...how does one determine the size?  ( I looked for the size properties of the  Lightbox "screen")

    Thank you.
Not quite what I was hoping for but at least I know now.
How does one get a measure on the "image box"?  (trial and error?)
I guess one needs to know so that one can create images scaled to that size or a tad smaller.
Thinking ...Maybe I just pick a size for images and then scale the box to fit in the design mode.

  • IPhoto 5 automatically scaling photos in slideshow. NO!!!

We've started running several slideshows at our company lately using iPhoto 5 and it works great. However, even though it may start out functioning correctly, all of a sudden, portrait oriented pictures automatically start scaling to fill the screen. The checkbox under settings is unchecked, so why does iPhoto spontaneously desire to scale my pictures?
We've been using a mac mini, and today we tried my powerbook and my powerbook did the same thing!!
    Suggestions?

    Hi there,
Seems strange that even with Auto Scaling UNCHECKED, you are basically still getting scaling...
I would go ahead and remove the iphoto.plist, some of your preferences have gone haywire... to do this make sure you first close iPhoto
User > Library > Preferences > find 'com.apple.iPhoto.plist' and drag it to your desktop. Open iPhoto, it will react as if it opened for the first time, all your photos will be there but you will have to go to Preferences and adjust what you had before, as well as 'view' preference... try your slideshow again, making sure you have 'settings' you want...
BTW - if this works, iPhoto has generated a new iphoto plist and you can trash the one on your desktop...

  • Problems with filesize after exporting and scaling photos

I gave digital photo frames as Christmas gifts and wanted to load them up with many years worth of family photos, so I exported hundreds of photos from iPhoto and scaled them down to roughly 400 by 300 pixels to be used in the low resolution digital photo frames. The files vary in size from 40K to 100K.
The entire folder of over nearly 1,000 photos is only 86.2 megabytes in size.
However, when I went to copy the photos onto a new 512 megabyte SD card, only a couple dozen photos would transfer before I would get an error message saying there was no room left on the card. The finder would show over 400 megabytes available, but if I tried to drag even one more 40K photo on, I would get the same out-of-room error message.
I tried reformatting the card several times and several ways (including disk utility), but same problem. So I tried different SD cards, but same result. I tried CF cards, but same result. I tried different card readers, tried dragging the photos over one at a time, tried copying them with PhotoMechanic, tried doing it all from a different Mac, but always the same result.
It seems like there must be some hidden files being copied along with the photos that are taking up that extra space on the card. Never had anything like this happen before. It only affects these files that were exported through iPhoto 6.0.5 and scaled to a smaller file size. So I'm sure the problem must be there.
Has anyone had anything like this happen before? The organization and editing of all these photos took many hours so I would love to find a solution without having to start the entire process over.
    Thanks.

    I found a solution--though I don't understand why it works.
I was dragging photos (either in a group of hundreds of photos or individually) onto the card so they resided on the top level of the card's system heirarchy. That's when I would always get the "out-of-room" error message.
But when I inadvertantly dragged the entire FOLDER full of hundreds of photos onto the card, it worked fine. I guess the card structure allows for a folder full of hundreds of photos, but not those same photos when they are not in a folder.

  • Has anyone had trouble scaling photos when trying to set a wallpaper?

Since updating to iOS 7 I've been unable to scale my pictures when trying to set them as either the lock screen or home screen wallpaper. It will only set as the largest zoomed-in setting possible and I can't get the photo to a more scaled back size. When I shrink it with my fingers, it simply reverts back as soon as I let go and before I can press Set.

    Hey nytekit,
Sounds like that is due to the parallax of the wallpaper, and one solution would be to Reduce Motion:
You can stop the movement of some screen elements, such as the parallax of the wallpaper behind home screen icons.
Reduce motion. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility and turn on Reduce Motion.
    via: Reduce onscreen motion

  • Scaling Photos in Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0

Using Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 - Adobe Designer
    When creating a form:
Is it possible to scale a photo within a designated box (Position Content) so that it fills the box without distorting/stretching the photo?
If so, can you then move the photo within the designated box (Position Content)to position it?

You can name them all Check Box 1 but you must assign a different Value to each on. Like a "Yes", "No" value in the Options Export Value. This will force the user to check only 1 of the boxes.

  • How do you Display a Scaled Photo in a Dialog?

I'll admit I'm new to scripting in Lua/Lightroom and apologize if this is a trivial question.
I'm attempting to write a plug-in to assist in a workflow for scanned images.
The idea is to scan in the images and then use the plug-in to help process them
efficiently by selecting options that I'll write specific code for.
The plug-in will access a set of images selected from the Libraby module.
In order for the plug-in to work effectively I need to display a preview/thumbnail
of the image currently being processed in the plug-in's dialog box. I have successfully
used viewFactory:picture to display the image, but it displays the image at full resolution
    which is way to big.
Is there a way to use viewFactory:picture and scale the image down to a reasonable size?
Is there a way to access the lower resolution preview images that already exist in Lightroom?
Is there a way to do this that I am missing?
I'm currently using Lightroom 2.5. The dialog I'm attempting to design would look a lot like
the one provided in the Library module in Metadata -> Edit Capture Time, with my own
    workflow logic options.
Many thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

    Hi John,
I took a look at an lrprev file - looks like standard jpeg image(s) in some kind of non-standard envelope. If you rename it .jpg or .tif then ACDSee will open it and display the thumbnail.
I didn't look at the database files that go with it, but they might reveal something if one had a look.
Anyway, LrViewer certainly proves the previews are accessible if one troubles to figure out how.
The original poster could even try setting one of the lrprev files as a resource (maybe with a better suffix, like jpg or tif) and see if view-factory:picture would displays the thumbnail. One would still need to figure out how to get the right one though - that's where taking a peek at the database might come in handy.
    That's all I got,
    Rob

  • How to view file size of imported photo

i plan to import a number of large photos from iphoto. i hesitate because each photo is between 20 and 50 MB. Will iweb scale this file down while importing? How can i find out about it? I did not find file information on the imported photo nor do i know the file location of the website project on my mac harddisk.
Do I have to use third party software like Photoshop to scale the size down and afterwards import them into iphoto and iweb?
    Thank You,
    Harpo

I think you should DEFINITELY scale your images down before importing them or dragging and dropping them into iWeb! If your images are in iPhoto, then you can use the "Export" command in iPhoto to export your images and specify what resolution they should be scaled to.
One of the issues I have with the iPhoto export function is that you have no control over the amount of JPG compression in the exported photos, which has a direct relationship to the resulting file size. So I like to use a program called "Downsize" http://www.stuntsoftware.com/Downsize/ which will allow you to specify maximum image dimensions as well as JPG compression. You will also then be able to check how large the resulting files are in the Finder before using them in iWeb.
Whenever you are scaling photos for use in iWeb, it's important to realize that any additional changes that you make to the photos in iWeb will cause the image to be converted from jpg to png. This may impinge on your ability to control the filesizes directly. The way to get around this is to scale your photos to exactly the size you want and then after dragging them into iWeb, click on the "Use original size" button in the Inspector Metrics tab. Also, don't apply any other effects to your images like rotation, frames, drop shadows... If you want these, you should do these in external applications as well. These are my recommendations only if you want to have complete control over your filesizes. It's certainly not required.
But as far as your 50mb images go, definitely scale them down before bringing them into iWeb. Otherwise, iWeb will rescale the images for you, but it will ALSO throw a copy of your 50mb file into your Domain file to refer to in publishing. This would cause your Domain file to balloon in size quite rapidly. To put things into perspective for you on this, the Domain file for my entire site is only 80mb.

  • Ipad Photo - Making File Size Smaller for emailing

How does one make pics smaller (file size) for emailing?

The Photo Pad app allows you scale the photo. I just checked and it does also reduce the file size. You can email the scaled photo from the app.

  • Bug when using Applescript??

I've made an Applescript that scales photos, uploads them to my server and do a few other things. When creating the scaled photos I name them with the current date plus a 'counter'. This has worked just fine until some time ago when the counter stopped increasing the value.
That is, the counter increments during the export so the pictures ends up with "_1", "_2", etc, but it doesn't remember the value for the next export. So if I first export three photos the get the names "2008-04-14_0.jpg", "2008-04-14_1.jpg", and "2008-04-14_2.jpg" then if export a few more photos they used to get the names "2008-04-14_3.jpg", "2008-04-14_4.jpg" and this seem to happen when I do the export manually. But using the applescript the second batch get the names "2008-04-14_0.jpg", "2008-04-14_1.jpg".
Is this a bug? Am I dreaming? Have I made a mistake somewhere?

The script looks like this (the actual export line)
set bigPic to export selImages using largeSizeExport to tmpExportFolder naming files with (file naming policy largeFileExport)
the largeFileExport is the name of a preset that is defined as "CurrentDate-Counter"
The counter should save the incremented value (at least it does that when I do it manually) but it seem that it always start from 0 when I use applescript

  • Shared messages?

My mother, my father, and I all use the same e-mail address and have iPhones. I don't know why, but yesterday, any time I sent a text, my father recieved it on his iPhone, where the person to whom I sent it was in his address book or not. He could answer them and start these bizare conversations where my iPhone wouldn't know they were three-way, and I'd see the texts he sent to my friend in my conversation with my friend, but would have to answer him separately. Now it's happening to me, when I send texts to my mother, they come back to my own phone number! What the **** is going on? Does this have something to do with iCloud? It started when we downloaded iOS 7.03 (Which incidentally, STILL hasn't fixed the problem with scaling photos!). I need to fix this ASAP, we all have jobs, and getting these texts interferes with them, as well as everyone's privacy.

Oh, joy, another problem, my dad and I are now able to text, but when we text each other, the phones don't vibrate or ring with messages. More importantly, a friend of mine who also has an iPhone and is completely unconnected to any of us is now sharing messages with my father. This is really messed up.

  • Photomerge in photoshop elements 7

The photomerge path in PSE 7 is not active

I did a similar panoramic video project using stitched photos from PSE. However I did not exceed the maximum size (cant recall off hand what it is) and I had no quality issues when zooming and panning even for a 1920x1080 HDV export. If PE7 will not accept the file you will need to resize it. Have you looked at the different resizing options in PSE, Bicubic, Bicubic Sharpened etc to try to optimize the quality of the scaled photo.
Also remember if you are viewing on astandard TV the 720x480 resolution will limit the quailty anyway.

  • Stills go outside the 16:9 borders PE4

    Hi there!
I have a small videoproject with stills in it. I have some jpg-files that i made with photoshop. I import them to premiere and then i fiddled around with some effects. One is the scale property. I change the scale over time so that the effect will be a zooming in on the still photo. It looks as intended inside premiere elements 4 but when i export the video to a quick time movie the edges of the still photo will go out of the boarders on the 16:9 format as the scale increases. Its a bit hard to explain but someone might be able to help... what am I doing wrong? It works as inside PE4 when i export to an avi file.... My project is set to 16:9 format and is wide with in premiere. When i look at my video inside premiere it looks ok. (When the up-scaled photo crosses the edges of the screen it disappears out of it as it should).
    thanks

    Hi again!
Its a bit confusing and hard to explain. The problem, i might post a vid later on, is as follows:
    1. When I save my project to a file (movie) I click "file export movie" and choose settings and then quicktime, then codex h264 and under video i chose pixel aspect ratio PAL widescreen 16:9. When I view this file in quick time player its still not 16:9 format but rather squeezed into a 4:3 frame in the player. Thats strange. Thats the first problem. (This works (its a 16:9 windows in QT player) if I instead save the movie from the "Share" feature in premiere elements with the same settings...).. strange..
    2. The second problem, the one i came here for in the first place =) .
If i have a project set to 16:9 format in PE and add a picture. If i then scale this one up over time to make a zoom in effect strange things happen. When i export this project to a QT file (if it comes out with black borders on top and bottom that is..) it first looks good. Then when the scale effect starts the picture will fill out and zoom in and the edges of it will cross the black borders and go outside them... kinda like youd have a layer with black borders and then the scaleing image infront of them. Like its a letterboxed 4:3 window with my 16:9 contenct inside but since "it is" a 4:3 windows the scaleing image will go out into the black borders.  As i said in my last post the problem wasnt there if I exported to an .avi file instead of QT.
Today, when i tried this again to see what i did exactly when outputting the file i cant seem to get the same problem to occur anyomore.. now its just my problem #1 as described above. Very annoying. I'll write here again if i figure out what i did to get the "scaling problem" to appear.
    Thanks

  • HELP!!!!!! Pixelation in Project in Export...

I am very familiar with FCE, but decided to take a swing at FCP. I am almost done a project, filled with a montage of pictures and video. I just exported it and it came out ALL PIXELATED:( FCE never gave me this problem... What am I doing wrong?? I am sure FCP is way better than FCE, but lately... it's been giving me more headaches than what I'm used to:(
I'm exporting it as a QuickTime Movie, using current settings, as a movie self-contained and I'm not recompressing All Frames. The video looks a bit pixelated, the pictures are scanned, and some look pixelated some don't, I've enlarged them, I think that might be part of the problem, but if so... why does it do it only to SOME pictures. In FCE I did the same thing, and when I viewed it from the timeline it did look a bit pixelated but after exporting it as a QuickTime Movie, and viewing it from QuickTime, it was perfect.
What can I do in order to fix this problem.
I thought FCP was going to give me a better result. I have a deadline for this project and I'm running out of time, I don't want to do this all over again from FCE.
Can someone PLEEEEEEEAAAAAse give me some options on how to make it look crisp.
it is 10 am Toronto time, I need to take a plane at 12 am I'll be checking any response this next two hours. To work on it later today.
    Thank you for your help.
    Claus

Let's start by providing the easy set up or sequence setting you used.
If you are scaling photos up, they will not look good.

  • Iphoto to imovie to idvd--bad picture quality(Cannon powershoot sd200)

My family video I made for the year looks like really. I made one last year in movie maker on my PC and it looks great. The one I made on my mac this year is blurry and not clear. The video is fine but the photos are really bad. Specifically photos that are at a distance. I have tried different video formats and can't solve it. I want to do movies that have photos, video clips to music that can be clipped. I even stumped the teachers at my local apple store which baffled me as I would think I am not the only one with this problem. If I could make a a great quality movie on movie maker on my PC, why can't I do it on my IMAC???? I

    Hi again,
Glad to hear you are happier with the results. Scaling photos to fill the screen may cause you to lose a few heads if you are using the KB effect. As for images not filling the screen. It's a bit difficult to guess without knowing what kind of images they are.
You are correct in saying it is easier to add titles and transitions into an iPhoto slideshow. You can split the clip via the 'edit' menu in iMovie and add titles over your images. It is very simple and gives a great effect. If you plan ahead you can create your slideshows to accommodate these extras after you import it to iMovie.
    Happy editing.
