Scaling

Hallo,
I edited an image in Photoshop. It has a height of 578 pixels and is 1120 pixel wide. The pixel-edge-ratio is set to D1/DV Pal (1,066). I am working with the german versions of those applications, so excuse me if some of the commands and labels are not translated correctly.
I thought I could import the image into Encore DVD 2.0, set its scaling to "scale and crop" and than choose a pan e.g. from west to east on it.
But if I import the image and use it in a slideshow, even without scaling its already bigger than the monitor area. I thought if I set the scaling to "scale and crop", it would be resized in either direction until the height or the width fit exactly into the monitor, and the rest is cropped.
But it seems that this applies only if the width or the height of the image is smaller than the monitors width or height. In that case, "scale and crop" makes the image bigger until it fits in the described way. If the image is already bigger, it won't be shrinked to fit.
But my initial question is: Why is the image's height bigger than the monitor's height if I set the image height to 578 pixels?
Then I found out that this is connected with the pan & zoom settings. Of course my image is much wider than the monitor, that's because I wanted to pan it from west to east. If I deselect the pan, suddenly the image is scaled in the correct way. Now I just want it to have exactly this size, but be panned from west to east. But as soon as I choose pan (without zoom), Encore DVD 2.0 makes it bigger. That leads to important areas of the image being cropped.
Can somebody explain to me why that is. Why is a panned image scaled different than a zoomed one?
Regards,
Christian Kirchhoff

Chain,
There's scaling in the Print Dialog...
It there some other type of Scaling that you are looking for?

  • Displaying the content of one JPanel in an other as a scaled image

    Hi,
I'd like to display the content of one JPanel scaled in a second JPanel.
The first JPanel holds a graph that could be edited in this JPanel. But unfortunately the graph is usually to big to have a full overview over the whole graph and is embeded in a JScrollPanel. So the second JPanel should be some kind of an overview window that shows the whole graph scaled to fit to this window and some kind of outline around the current section displayed by the JScrollPanel. How could I do this?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Best,
    Marc.

  • Yoga 2 Pro Resolution Scaling Issues

So I just picked this laptop up from Best Buy the other day and so far I am loving it. However that is not to say that it has been entirely without issues so far and I do apologize if this issue has been brought up before but I was unable to find a decent answer in my searches.
I have checked this on a few games but I will focus on one that I want to play the most but also seems to have the most issues.
So this laptop is just not powerful enough to run a lot of games at the full 3200x1800 resolution and I totally understand that and was not expecting to, however, when turning the resolution down, say to 1600x900 instead of scaling the resolution to fill the screen, it runs it as the actual pixels inside a black box. This has the effect of making the games just too tiny to see, not to mention half or more of the screen is just being wasted.
This seems to really only happen when running a game in Direct X 11 mode, DX9 seems to work fine, but causes other problems and is really not a great option. Alternately, some games, I can set the windows resolution down (which scales fine in windows) and then the game will run and scale. However, specificially with Civilization 5 (one of the games I was most excited to play) it still does not work properly. There is a work around, but it is less than ideal, and I am at a loss as to why I just cant run the game at a lower resolution and have it scale and fill the screen.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

There is a setting, however, when at native resolution, instead of giving the option to scale to fit display, it just has another option that says maintain display scaling or something like that (I am not on the laptop right now, so I have to double check). As far as I can tell it just does not scale properly. When I change to a non-native resolution, the options change and it then says scale to fit screen, which is what i want.
However, I would rather not have to change to a non native resolution every time I want to run a game. And, specifically in the case of Civilization 5, it doesn't help. The only thing I have found so far that works at all is to change the resolution to 1920x1080, then set the ingame resolution to 1440x900. It is a pain, and ends up in a streched picture.
I tried to install the latest intel drivers from their website (not sure if it would have fixed the issue, since there was no changelog) but it gave me an error saying they were not verified for my device.
This is a rather frustrating issue, especially considering that every computer I have ever owned up until this point has been able to scale the image to fit the screen with no problems what so ever.

  • Yoga 2 Pro: deactivating pad in yoga modes, soft keyboard in non-microsoft sw, scaling Windows?

I installed Windows 8.1 pro due to the need of domain, I also downloaded and installed all Lenovo software as well as drivers. I am also using Classic Shell to get a "normal" start menu.
Issue 1: Keyboard disables when not in laptop mode, touchpad is allways enabled. How do I disable touchpad in tent, stand tablet mode?
Issue 2: Soft keyboard shows up in Microsoft software, however it does not show up when typing in other software, Firefox, Lightroom etc. Is there a way to make this work?
Issue 3: In full resolution Windows scale bad, as several computers now delivers with this high resolution and 4K monitors will be more common, is there a fix from Microsoft to get normal scaling? Ie. menues are very small making it hard to hit the correct button on touchscreen.

I, too, have the soft keyboard issue. If I'm already editing some text and switch modes, the keyboard shows. If I move to tent/tablet mode and try to edit - no keyboard!!! The is an On-Screen Keyboard app but it fills the entire screen. Useless. Surely there is an answer to this problem?

  • Yoga 2 Pro- Best browser in your experience? (Image Scaling)

As many of you Y2P owners have no doubt noticed, a number of third party apps look... off when viewign them on the Y2P because the screen is a higher resolution than they're optimized for. Unfortunately, Chrome is one of those apps. Considering that I've been on Chrome on the mac I used to use (Just switched to Windows with the Y2P) and the android phone and tablet that I own, I was hoping to keep that going here on my Y2P. Sadly, Chrome doesn't quite scale right with everything , particularly text, looking fuzzy in desktop mode, and that being the case I've switched off of it.
At this point, the only two browsers that seem to scale correctly are IE 11 and Firefox, though I'm open to suggestions for other options that I'm not aware of. To my fellow Y2P owners, do you use Firefox? IE? Or just suck it up and use some third party borswer, odd scaling and all? I'm using firefox, but for whatever reason it chooses to load certain webpages completely, then immeadiately redirect me to that website's "page not found" screen, and Youtube thumbnails are still scaled incorrectely and therefore are borderline unuseable so I'm debating just dealing with IE since IE 11 isn't nearlay as bad as everyone says, but I wanted to post here and see if any others had some suggestions.

hello. ooooh. kaiser121 i like to try browsers. i am not a yoga user, but we are all browser user. The central browser becomes more important every day. i am so surprised that someone has not ripped off a long wikilist of browsers to try! direct recommendation is risky ? in public forum? with ie10 ie moved to the top again in my book. ie11 lately is letting me down. firefox just became usable again when it hit v.29 There has been many version changes since the first post open. recently i think f irefx 31 was better page control than 33. i prefer k-meleon. I cannot report on yoga view, but i will mention some browsers that can always appreciate feedback on any. Opera was changing its engine when you tried it. things change quickly. what do you judge? will convenient use of zoom help any of you? does full screen [F11] suit any of you? (if you are learning new habits then maybe full screen is for you) in F11 you cannot tell what browser you are in; it just works. font style and size make difference? using Modern version? desktop version? so resizing is a major concern? there is more specialized browsers than these. some security configuring and some include file manager. I'd like any comment about liking any one.
What is looking best on your yoga today?
    k-meleon(74), qupzilla(1.8.4), slimboat(1.1.53), OperaNext(26)

  • Question? Best Workflow HD/HDV and Reframing/Scaling to Export to both HD and SD when working in an HD Timeline?

Just wondering, what is the best method for working with HD Footage both HDV 1440x1080 and HD 1920x1080
Not long been using Adobe Premiere Pro CC, just switched over from Grass Valley EDIUS 6.08 and atempting my first Stage Show Multi Camera.
Source is 5 HDV PAL and 1x1920x180 60fps MP4 file from a Sanyo Handy Cam.
Final delivery is going to be DVD.
Have done a few smaller projects prior to and normally have edited in HDV 1440x1080 50i PAL and exported to whatever format I need.
Slightly different this time, I need to I need to crop/reframe some video from a couple of the Static locked off cameras. I know what to do but at moment though, I'm very much undecided which method to use for best results.
Doing some testing I notice that if I import the footage and edit in my usual  HD Timeline as said above, then I go into Motion and Scale and reframe to suit, then the picture still
looks better still Full Screen on my 2nd Monitor in the HD Timeline than if I switch the Sequence Settings to SD DV PAL.
I am wondering how the scaler works when exporting. Say I go with the original HD Sequence, scale the Locked off Shots as I want them, then export to SD DV PAL then does the Adobe Media Encoder take into account that I am working in a HD Sequence (HDV 1440x1080 50i PAL) and then Scale to suit or does upscaling go in an HD Timeline then Exporting to SD make things worse, I am asking this as I still like to have the option to output an HD file for the Web and possible Bluray or Mobile Device later on.
I also still prefer working in an HD Timeline as for the other Camera Angles, then it is easier to judge focus since the image is sharper, as apposed to working in an SD Sequence.
I guess the other option I suppose is to edit in HD and then switch the Sequence Settings later on to SD before Export, but not sure that would work with the scaling? Or is that the same as working in an HD Timeline anyway and then selecting an SD Preset in the Adobe Media Encoder anyway?
I guess what I am saying is, if I say for example, Scale a HDV source to 130% or then export to SD in the AME then, is the AME upscalling the original HDV Source to 130% Loosing Quality firstly (making less pixels that to begin with), then downscaling back again to 100% SD Resolution, loosing quality once more, or does it see that the source is HD and has more pixels to use and take that into account? If you get what I am saying. Obviously if I am exporting to any HD Format then, I understand that where will be some quality lose with any amount of HD scale.
I also read that it is less CPU resource full working in the native resolution of the media when editing, especially on an older system.
The other option is to work in an 720 Preset possiblely?
At the moment I don't have a proper Preview device and am making do with the 2nd Display on my Graphics Card GTX 760.
I was looking at getting a Blackmagic Device for preview, or possible one of the Matrox.
It is a shame really, since I already have the Canopus HD Storm in the PC, which I was using with EDIUS for a lovely full screen preview to a 32" TV, since looked great, so since switthcing to Premiere, I can't use it and am having to make do with the GTX 760. Which isn't as good.
Maybe there is some setting I can alter to get a better Playback Image?
Anyway, I notice that the Full Screen Image from the GTX 760 is not as clear as it should be when editing, especially whilst playing back the image is slightly soft and more so when in the Multicam Mode it is even softer.
I am not sure if this is because my computer is not quiet fast enough? Maybe I should post this in a seperate thread in the Hardware forum, but I thought it was worth mentioned in this post aswell.
    SYSTEM SPECS
    Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR (Socket 775) Motherboard
    8GB DDR PC-800 RAM (4x2 Sticks)
    Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz
60GB OCZ SSD (FM-25S2S-60GBP2 ATA Device)
2 TB 7200 Sata 300 Hard Drive - For Video (Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 ATA Device)
    Windows 7 SP1 x64
So in short At the moment I am undecided which method is best to use

Your Creative camera is not the best one could wish for. Open a 1280 x 720 sequence, import some Creative footage, use motion scale to fit it in and judge the quality for yourself. My guess is you will be disappointed in the quality. Then when outputting to DVD you will reduce the resolution and quality again, making it even worse.
So, my suggestion is, don't follow that route.
Ultimately you will end up with 720 x 576 material for your DVD. You already need to upscale your Creative footage, and change the PAR and take serious quality hits, do not increase your problems by upscaling and then downscaling again.

  • Printing and Page scaling issues

On a lot of my documents -- scanned from 8x11 b&w pages -- Acrobat seems to want to scale down the pages to print correctly, when this is not true.
Is there anything that I can do to solve this issue?
I realize that I can set page scaling to none, but this is NOT a solution. Every person printing the document would have to do the same thing.  I want to solve this problem so that even if Acrobat is set to "Shrink to Fit", that it knows to NOT scale down the pages.

In addition to the above comment, Acrobat or Adobe Reader will always try to scale a page down if it is printing on paper of the same size.  If you want to make it even more fool proof (a user could override the above setting and select scale pages to fit) make the page size a bit smaller than letter, then even if they select shrink to fit it won't need to.

  • Macbook to Hdtv scaling problems

    Hi there!
I have a macbook 2008 alumiinium 2.4ghz model. I am trying to connect it to my HDTV. I bought a miniDP to HDMI and connected to my tv and it works great. The picture fits the tv perfectly, however even though it fits the screen I was wanting to use the bigger screen to work on Logic Pro as a 13in screen is a bit of a pain at times. The problem is that so far my macbook screen it being stretched to fit the 42in tv screen so I don't actually get any extra space as my screen just looks bigger!
Any suggestions on setting to fix this? I have an LG television if that helps. I cant for the life of my figure how to get it to work. The picture on my tv is really sharp and great but its just scaling up everything on my mac when what I really want is to be able to use that extra screen real estate for my logic pro projects!!!
    Cheers in advance!
    Tom

There is a chance that your MDP to HDMI adapter is not working properly with audio. I had that problem with one that I had bought. I tried a newer one and the sound came through with no problems.
The only thing I would suggest (before buying a new adapter) is, try a different HDMI cable... if you have one. That way you can rule out that as being the problem.

  • Is there a way to change the true resolution rather than scaling?

    Hi,
I have searched through just about every single forum, website and search engine there is and haven't found anything. Perhaps I am phrasing my question wrong. I currently own a Macbook Pro 13.3'' Retina (Of Mid-2014 since I just bought it?) and I can't figure out how to change the resolution. The OS seems to default to 2560x1600 no matter what I set it to because I think all its changing is the scaling. Is there a way to do this? I used to own a Macbook Air 13.3'' which ran 1440x900 and I know that it was pixelated. On the same size display here...when I run the claimed "1440x900" its still ultra sharp which means its using scaling I assume. Any ideas how do I change the actual resolution, not just the scaling. The OSX settings currently seem to be just the equivalent of modifying the DPI like you can in Windows. I want to find out if there is a way to change the actual output resolution.

The MacBook Pro like all laptops has an LCD screen. Like all LCD screens the screen has a single physical resolution, in the case of your MacBook Pro Retina 13.3" it is 2560x1600 pixels. This is the number is dots the screen is physically made of.
In the old days when desktop computers used CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) displays which looked like TVs these sort of displays could display multiple resolutions in fact CRTs have no single fixed physical resolution. However LCDs which use totally different technology do only have a single 'real' resolution.
If your really interested in how a CRT can do different resolutions then the answer is that a CRT uses an electron beam to excite the phosphor display on the front of the display (to make it glow), it scans from left to right, moves down a line and then does the next line, and so on till it reaches the bottom and then goes back to the top. The speed (rate) at which it does this is known as the horizontal frequency and the vertical (refresh) frequency or rate. If the horizontal line is drawn specific time and that is divided in to 640 units, then it can be told to turn off and on 640 times per line, if the same line is drawn in the same time but the interval is divided in to 1024 then it can 'draw' 1024 horizontal pixels instead of 640 horizontal pixels. In actuality the display has no physical pixel you are merely lighting up small or larger areas on the screen and hence a CRT has no single fixed resolution.
In order for a computer using an LCD display to use a different apparent resolution it has to 'scale' the image to a different size, as a very simple example if we wanted to scale down to 1280x800 pixels which is exactly half 2560x1600 then the computer would use 2x2 (four) physical pixels to represent a single scaled pixel. Often however the chosen scaled resolution may not be an exact multiple like that example. Apple on the Retina display have provided some suggested scaled resolutions which work reasonably well these being 1680 by 1050, 1440 by 900, and 1024 by 640 pixels.
None of these will look as good as 2560x1600 because the screen physically is made up of 2560x1600 dots and no amount of cheating will change that.

  • Scaling video without dithering pixels

    Hello,
I've performed some screen capture that I've imported into my Premiere CS4 project.  Occasionally I want to zoom in, but Premiere chooses to dither (or "smooth" or "interpolate") the image whenever it's scaled.  I'd prefer it not to resample, and instead to keep the blocky pixels of the image (as if you were staring closely at your computer monitor).
Any ideas on how to achieve this effect?

    Zoom in reeeeeeeeally close.

  • After scaling a smart object do I need to remake it as a smart object again?

Using Photoshop CS5 - after scaling a smart object do I need to remake it as a smart object again?

No! Just keep working with it you can adjust the original smart object file and retiuch it and all will update just click on the smart object  in the layers panel everything will work as you expect it to.

  • Acrobat 8.1.2 not scaling when printing

I have a user with Acrobat 8.1.2 installed and is trying to print an oversize document onto 8.5x11 paper. orignal page size is 34in x22in. When he goes to print, scaling shows 31% and the preview looks correct. Page scaling is set to Shrink to printable area, and Auto rotate and center is checked. However, the printed page only has the upper left corner of the document, at full size.
If he opens and prints the same thing in Reader, on the same machine, it prints fine. Only Acrobat has the issue. He is the only person in his department having the issue, according to him.
Reader and Acrobat have both been uninstalled/reinstalled with no change.
    Any ideas?

    32bit Windows XP SP3. Reader 8.1.2
Our workaround for the problem was a new profile. I'd still like to find out the root cause. We had cleaned out his temp folders as well, but it's definately profile specific, as I didn't have the issue when I logged onto the same machine, and a new profile for the user worked as well.
We had even reinstalled the printer (and driver) and tried unchecking, printing, then rechecking Shrink to printable area and printing again.

  • Win 8.1, Retina MBP, external display, stupid scaling

I've got a Retina MacBook Pro (Late 2013) with a 2880x1800 display, also connected to an external 1920x1080 display, dual-booted into Windows 8.1 with the latest Boot Camp drivers and the most recent nVidia drivers.
In Windows, when I go into the Display control panel and make "Change the size of all items" a little larger, then things look fine on the external display - but the laptop's display shows a teensy tiny taskbar and teensy tiny icons on the desktop.
If I check "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays", then things look fine on the laptop's display - but the external display's windows and icons are HUGE.
And either way, if I'm not running the laptop's display at Retina resolution - even if I'm running at exactly half resolution, 1440x900 - then the laptop's display is terribly blurry. Makes me want to go back to a pre-Retina laptop.
What are the best Windows settings to have reasonably-sized windows and icons on the Retina display as well as the external display under Windows 8.1?
(Yes, this is just another reminder that I shouldn't bother trying to run Windows on a Mac ... but I thought that handling multiple displays with different pixel densities was supposed to be Windows 8.1's strong suit?)

Good point, but then it's a shame that not only can I not take advantage of the Retina resolution, but then the lower resolution setting makes the Retina display look terribly fuzzy. Even set to exactly half the resolution (2880x1800 -> 1440x900), it looks like WIndows is trying to fuzz everything instead of simply pixel-doubling it.
I understand that's a shortcoming of the nVidia driver. I'll go find the nVidia board to complain...
(I'm extending the desktop, btw, not mirroring.)

  • Firefox is scaling down the photo sizes, along with chrome and internet explorer but Firefox's photos are usually smaller

I sell products on a site, along with other sellers, that is owned by someone else.
We have many sellers there. Some of us are having problems with how we are able to view the size of our photos taken of our products that are up for sale.
From seller to seller, we have different versions of Firefox that we are using. I have the newest Firefox, which I believe is 4.
I was having, like others who use 4, the same problem seeing smaller photos before I did the upgrade as well.
It seems to be the case for most of us who are having the problem, that Firefox photos scale down smaller than Internet Explorer and Chrome.
We have been told that this may be a browser issue as the site owners say they have not made any changes. At this point we are unsure since there are so many variations from seller to seller (keep in mind that some sellers are not seeing the photos scale down through their computer).
We have asked the site owners to look into this problem further. I also wanted to see what the Firefox community had to say. Do you think it may be a browser issue? We would greatly appreciate your input.
Below are some examples of photos that have been scaled down for the sellers who are seeing a problem with smaller photos while both in Firefox; all using different versions of Firefox:
One photo that was originally the size of 419px by 1, 007px is being seen by one seller to a scaled down size of 81px by 64px.
Another seller is viewing this same photo scaled down to 163px by 329px.
Another seller is able to view this photo as the original size it was intended to be, which is 419px by 1, 007px.
The above scenario has been the worst scaled down size we have heard of so far.
Typically a photo that is the size of 1, 000px by 930px has been scaled down to 420px by 391px.
There are other examples as to size, but you can see that the photos have been scaled down quite a bit.
You can see that it has been scaled down to less than half of the original size. This can pose a real problem for us depending on the type of product that is being photographed.
    Thank you!!
