I received a call from a person calling from this number: 661-748-0240 with the name on caller id: SKYPE USER. This person claimed to be a long, lost relative and asked me to guess who he was. When I guessed a certain 2nd cousin--he then said yes and that he was working in Haitai as a volunteer. Said he was riding in a car with a friend and they got stopped by the police. Unknownst to him--his friend had marijane in the car and they needed money to get out of jail. He didn't want his dad to know. I hung up because this person was a fraud. Does SKYPE have people using the SKYPE name to scam people? Just wondering

This number: 661 748 0240
... is not a Skype Number. It is a generic caller ID number assigned by the local telephone companies when an outgoing call from the Skype network is transferred to the fixed line or land line network. I have also seen this number displayed when I receive calls from Skype to a mobile number. This occurs when caller ID data is either not set or is not transferred correctly.

A scam call by phone regarding my computer?

I received a tel call saying that my computer had been compromised. I assumed it is a scam call so I told the guy I would check it out myself and hung up. Has anyone else had this happen?

I used to get this call all of the time. They would say they were with Microsoft and thatI have a problem with my windows computer. Since the mac is gaining in popularity, I now receive these calls with the generic "your computer" is having problems. If you tell them you don't have a computer they will immediately hang up. Now I just screw with them, and keep them on the phone. I ask them what I should do. With each instruction I say ok, and wait for the next instruction pretending I am following their instructions to the letter. When I get tired of amusing myself, I tell them to f**k off and hang up.

For one thing, true call blocking (ie. where the call NEVER actually connects through to your number) can only be done by the service provider at their switches.
The best a device can do is allow the call to connect, and then use the caller ID information to compare that to a list of allowed and a list of disallowed caller IDs. That is a feature known as blacklisting, but it is not the same as actually blocking a call completely.
So as suggested, contact your carrier and ask what they can do for you.

hlp.urgent.alm.10, it came up as NOTIFICATION(tm) URGENT ...
It was an automated message telling me that my computer was infected (or something like that). It told me to log into [invalid URL]
I received the call at 9:43am, PST.
This is just an FYI

Robocallers like that are breaking the law. I used to constantly get calls from this phone number in Washington State that was being run by people who only speak Spanish. It's all a scam and it's crazy. There has also been a charity organization that I believe would stop at nothing to continue calling me and ignores my requests to be put on their "do not call" list. It's harrassment. they don't care, and they get away with it.
Seriously, try nomorobo.com. It's not failproof but ever since I added it to my phone service, it has made a huge difference and things have calmed down a lot. Even if some phone numbers from these scammers fall through the cracks, it's very easy to report them to nomorobo and I have found that I will stop receiving calls like that quickly. I even reported this caller from a blocked private line and that stopped as well. We all deserve peace of mind.

SCAM CALL ABOUT UNUSUALLY BIG BILL

I have just joined the forum to make people aware about a scam call I received at work from 'BT' yesterday. It was an Irish man who claimed that he wanted to make me aware and discuss, that our two bills (we have 3!) were excessively high and we would be receiving them within the next week. Alarm bells rang because I had paid our 3 x quarterly bills the week before. I asked him to confirm the amounts of our previous quarter bills. He gave me figures that did not match and said he couldn't go back any further on his system. He asked me questions and I told him that he was BT (supposedly) and he should be able to tell me the answers. He then started to get irate and said the big bills would need to be paid at the end of the month so I told him I would wait for the bills to arrive and if we were concerned about them, we would ring the number on the bill. He then said 'I am just trying to help you and if you end up getting a big big thats your look out' (not a very proffessional approach!) so I just said 'goodbye' and hung up.
What I'm not sure about is, what the caller hoped to achieve. Was he trying to lure me into disclosing account numbers or maybe bank details etc.? Has anybody else experienced a call similar to this. I tried to phone BT but just got an Indian call centre that, to put it politely, were useless. But they did tell me that nobody from BT had phoned me that day.

So many spam / scam calls

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone else gets as many spam or scam calls as I do. They can tally up to five times a day, with three rings while I'm doing something important. I get them even though I am on the Do Not Call list, and while I report them, they still keep calling.
I'm considering just dropping the residential phone service in favor of my cell phone because it's gotten so bad as of late. As a student, I hate getting these calls when I'm studying for finals especially. Hopefully Verizon will act on the part of the consumer and add some filtering software into their network, or up the blocked call # entries. It's a shame to see that I can only add 10 out of the 100 or so numbers on my caller ID to that list.

Thanks for the response Anthony. Luckily I was able to solve this problem very easily, but not in the way you suggested. In fact, I already did what you did, and said that in my original post. Donotcall.gov doesn't work well at all, even though it is the legit route to go.
Instead, I forwarded my Verizon number to my Google Voice number and the spam calls dropped overnight. All you do is sign up for an account, get a phone number, and link it to your Verizon number. While you have to give up your landline # for the most part, all calls have the ability to be filtered. Optionally, if you sync your contact information with your Google account (through Mac Address Book or similar), you can set groups or individual people to be filtered. They even have a universal spam filter. You can see voicemails by logging into your Google account, and block spammers if they happen leave a message. All messages are transcoded so that you can read them, perfect if you are in a meeting or class.

Block scam calls

I am getting International Scam Calls From Number 264 583 8144. How do I block these calls?

I've got the same issue with number-spoofed computer-dialed phone calls. I just got call #240 a few minutes ago, and that makes three today. I can tell you that these creeps work from 8:54am to 7:52pm, Monday through Saturday (and rarely on Sunday), and they really hit heavy around Christmas and tax season. That "block 5 numbers for 90 days" thing is a joke since these guys change their numbers every few days. It doesn't even block it for 90 days in the first place, the last time I updated my blocks for the most recent five numbers used, the pop-up said it'd only be good for three days. Sure enough, it expired in three days, and those same five numbers didn't miss a chance to start harassing me again. The FTC and Do Not Call don't do much either. If anything, I've gotten more calls since I started reporting numbers regularly.

I think I got a scam call...

So I got what I believed was a scam call from +1 (661) 748-0240. He said some stuff about him detecting security issues with me and my IP address. I ask how he would know that, and he said it was through the servers connected to my PC. I'd like to think I'm fairly tech-literate so I could tell it was a bit of crap. Looking it up, I see it's a default skype number and that it's used for scamming quite a bit. So that helped my suspision. But here's the thing. This was a bit different. He knew and recited my name to me, and even said he was a third-party contracted by Dell(I own an Alienware laptop from late 2013). That was a bit scary as I have no idea how a scammer would have that info. But I'm pretty sure a REAL third-party network security company would have a REAL number. So I'm fairly sure it was just a scammer. but I have no idea how he would have that info. Has anyone else had this instance where the guy knew your name and somehow knew your PC brand?

You are correct: this number: 001 661 748 0240
is a well-known generic caller ID assigned to outgoing Skype calls by the land line telephone companies when Skype caller ID is missing, corrupted, or simply not programmed or added.
I would be extremely wary of such calls, and suspect that perhaps the place you purchased your computer from may have been compromised. Call that vendor directly to ask for more information. As a proactive measure, change your on-line account passwords and run your preferred anti-virus/malware/spyware software suite using today's virus signature files.
Dell, and the vendor from which you purchased your PC, needs to be made aware of this incident.

In reference to the comment made about the PC World calls. There are real calls conducted by PC World to assist their Knowhow customers. It is a sad world where we chalk all help from our solution providers up to being some sort of a scam.
There are legitimate support calls being done by the Knowhow team to assist customers in using the services they purchased.
If for whatever reason you question the validity of these calls you can always call the phone number provided in the email sent to you by [email protected] and then at least you know you speaking the genuine Knowhow support.

Well to be honest, I have found the Knowhow team to be a bunch of scammers as well. My friend took a laptop that wouldn't charge to them and they said it was a faulty solder point on the motherboard and quoted £200 to replace the motherboard. In fact it was a broken power supply, £8 from Amazon. Another time they said a motherboard had failed and that's why it wouldn't boot. It was actually a duff battery, once I removed it booted fine. Then bought a new battery.

"Dell support" scam calls?

I have been receiving calls from 1-800-624 9896 claiming that our Dell computer is sending messages to Dell on a virus attack. When I tell them the computer is at the moment in storage, one time the call got disconnected immediately. Just now he asked "how is that possible, can you turn the computer on so I can guide you through some steps?" and when I then asked to talk to his manager and said I suspected he is not from Dell, the call again disconnected.
Sounds like a scam to me. Can you please investigate?

Possible scam call

I just received a Skype call telling me to go to www.mrrhelp.com because my "security" was in jeopardy. Has anyone else received such a call and can you tell me if it's from Skype or if it is a scam.

This is a known scam.
You can adjust your privacy to, Change Allow Calls from... "anyone" to "people on my Contact list only".

At&t scam call

I received a call from this number yesterday saying they were at&t needing to speak to me about my wireless account and they wanted me to give them my password to access my account to even tell me what it was about. I refused because no company ever asks for you to give your password over the phone. I then called at&t on the number built into my phone and reported it and at&t confirmed it as being a scam. I just wanted to let others know in case they receive the call, too. The phone number they called on is 1(800)947-5096

So, being on the DoNotCall list is worthless, these individuals breaking the law with thier scam aren't paying attention to it, unless of course that's were they're getting thier numbers from.
So, Verizon, we know that you know when a phone number is making thousands of calls per day, when are you going to put a stop to it?
Or, does Verizon only care about the income being generated by these hucksters, which of course would make Verizon the accessory to these criminal activities?
Oh, and thank you Verizon for charging an extra $5 monthly to stop "unavailable" callers, it's nice to know that Verizon cares about thier profit.

The telemarketers and the individuals who fall for the scams are what make it profitable, and contrary to what you said about Verizon somehow being a middleman, according to the article linked above, Verizon is actively working AGAINST the telemarketers.
I still don't get how Verizon is responsible for telemarketing "scams" - what about AT&T, T-Mobile, and other cellular companies? And I get calls all the time on our Comcast landline, and that has no connection at all with Verizon. So Comcast is in on this too?
Don't answer calls from #'s you don't recognize, set your phone to ring for contacts only (or set a "silent" ringtone for unknown callers), and report all the scam #'s to the donotcall list. That way you are minimally bothered, and you are being proactive about reporting and stopping the calls.

Silent Sales calls and International scam calls

I am registered with TPS. I still get calls from call centres and numerous international calls from "microsoft" etc. The call centre calls seem to be almost all from PPI Claims Companys but most wont respond when asked for details. International calls are almost all scams attempting to obtain bank details and money from unsuspecting persons. I can handle all of these calls but it is the nuisance of receiving these calls almost daily. If I complain to TPS my full name, address and telephone number are supplied to whoever I am complaining about. This is the last thing I want these people to know.
How can I stop these calls ?. BT want a monthly subscription and state that International calls cannot be blocked. Can anyone advise on how to stop all these unwanted calls ?. I feel like disposing of my landline phone and going all mobile.

Firstly, you are not alone. Many of us have these problems.
If you subscribe to BT caller display, then " international" calls and "number unavailable" calls are displayed on the screen, (if you are quick enough to read it).
I have my cordless phone set so that it does not connect on picking the phone up from it's base.
You can then decide whether to answer. They can leave a message if it's important. They soon decide that it's not worth the effort ringing your number, and the frequency of calls reduces.
(If you do answer the calls they know that you are there and will continue to call.)
Perhaps it's more to add to your phone bill, but it's worth it to reduce the aggravation.

Well known scam called my home phone from a Skype ...

Recently I have been contacted 2 or 3 times a day at my home phone number from 'Computer Maintenance Department' or 'Windows Department', claiming my computer was sending them error messages. The latest phonecall came from Skype number 001 956 460 5604.
This is a well known scam where the perpetrators aim to convince their victims that their computer has a virus and then persuade them to allow remote access in order to 'fix' the problem.
As this came from a Skype number, how do I go about reporting this?

Let me add to my earlier response. DO not even attempt to discuss this matter with comcast or their techs. They simply are unaware of the problem and can do nothing to fix it. Call Neustar at the number I gave you in ealrier post.. Tell them the problem and either have them delete your cellphone number from their data base or set the caller id to show city, state and your number. Deletion is probably better. Tech at Neustar did this told it would take effect in two hours and the problem was gone in 5 minutes. I am sick and tired of disconnects, talking to techs at comcast who barely can speak english, mumble, one told me today to go to the website and disable call blocking from my cell then call home and then reenable it after making the call. LMAO! Yeah, while driving down the road. This afternoon I got a call from a rather arrogant tech who didn;t want to hear the problem, didn;t undertand the problem and tried to blame the problem on my cell service. No problem when I call anyone outside of Comcast and it was corected once before . So the problem is with your cell phone number listing at Neustar. Since Comcast uses Neustar for their caller id numbers they should be be able to delete or correct entires but apparently cannot. Good Luck, my days with comcast are limited.
