Scan my music folder into itune

Dear Friends: How do I scan my music folder into itune to keep as a album, so that I will able to play from the itune

In iTunes, under File in the menu bar, you'll find "Add to Library..." (or maybe "Import" or similar in older iTunes versions).

  • Drag and Drop Music folder to iTunes Media folder?

My HDD lacks the space for running "Consolidating Files" (File->Library->Organize Library->Consolidate Files), since iTunes doesn't move the items but rather copies them to iTunes Media.  My goal is to have the Music folder live inside the iTunes Media folder.   Can I drag and drop the Music folder into iTunes Media?  Any adverse consequences for doing this?   I am trying to straighten my iTunes folder and file structure.  As it is now, in addition to what I mentioned, the *library.xml and other related files are living inside the iTunes Media folder but I believe those should reside under the iTunes folder. How do I get them back out there?  Does any of this reorganization matter?   Everything displays just fine in the iTunes browser.   Thank you for your help.

Where are these files now if not inside the itunes media folder?
since iTunes doesn't move the items but rather copies them to iTunes Media.
Correct. Any music now in iTunes should be in /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder.
Are you looking to add more music to iTunes?
    Do this...
    Go to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder.
Find the Automatically add to iTunes folder and make a shortcut on the desktop.
Drag songs here. This will add to iTunes and move, not copy, the song to the iTunes folder.

Go to iTunes prefs > Advanced.
Makes sure the iTunes media folder location is set to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
Uncheck Keep iTunes folder organized then click OK.
Then recheck Keep iTunes folder organized then click OK.

  • I pasted my entire music folder, including itunes and itunes media into my skydrive foler which has now backed them all up in the cloud.  Now when I open my itunes client, it can't see my music.  What do I do now?

I've recently bought a new computer with windows 8.1 and copied all my files across from my old PC, including all my music.  I signed up for Skydrive (now Onedrive) and in order to back up my music, I cut and pasted my entire music folder into the Skydrive folder of my PC.  All the music has now backed up to the cloud and I've made it available online and offline.  Problem is, when I came to open itunes, it couldn't find my music.  I've changed the location of my music folder by going to advanced preferences and specifying the itunes media folder in my skydrive folder and still no sign of my music in itunes. I'm in a mess.  Please help

Yes, provided all the media is inside the iTunes Media folder, which is in turn inside the main iTunes folder (which is the standard arrangement) you should be able to move the iTunes folder from <User's Music> to any other path and shift-start-Tunes (option-start-iTunes on a Mac) to reconnect to it.
If the media folder has split out to another drive in the past, or media is stored outside of the iTunes Media folder, then things get a bit more complicated. I can go into details should it be necessary.

  • Did a full recovery on hp with Vista. Using external HD, I reinstalled my music library, and installed iTunes from net.  Following instructions given in iTunes, I was unable to import my music library into iTunes.  Any advice, comments, etc,?

After recovery I am not able to load my existing music library into iTunes.  I followed instructions given in iTunes.  Any comments/suggestions?

Do you see the library and media files on your external drive?
If you recovered the iTunes folder from <User's Music> in the backup to your current <User's Music> folder then the library should all be there with no need to import anything.
Depending on how you backed up the data it is possible that the recovered files are missing the security permissions that iTunes needs to access them. See epair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for advice on how to check and reset if necessary.

  • Cant seem to get all the music in my music folder into my library.

So i transfered my music to my mac from my pc using a cat5 e ethernet cable..worked wonders. and then i put all the music folders into my music folder on my desktop.
i then dragged all of the music folders into itunes and it started to import.. i notice that some tracks are missing and some mp3 files, when i go into my music folders, are listed in my folders as WM files and not itunes files.( im guessing these were the files that i had ripped from cd using wm on my pc) ( is there no way to change them into an itunes file?)
i was thinking about it and maybe im importing wrong/put them in a wrong folder.
In my "music" folder on my desktop there are two other folders named "itunes music" and "itunes" which do i put my music into?
sorry for the long post...im totally lost and i am completely exhausted from staring at my computer screen for hours on end. thanks for any help

You won't be able to import those WMA files into iTunes. And simply pasting the files into the iTunes folder won't promote any conversion. In iTunes for Windows, you can go to File > Add to Library, and then add your WMA files (to which will then convert into a format that iTunes will recognize). iTunes for Mac, however, does not have this ability. It will not convert WMA files, nor play them.
Now, the tricky part is finding a workaround to get those WMA files into iTunes for Mac. If you still have access to your Windows computer, I'd simply backup the files again, but this time do the backup WITHIN the iTunes program. Doing to is very easy. Just follow the instruction in one of the following articles:
How to back up your media in iTunes
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n302392
Use a Smart Playlist to make regular backups of your music in iTunes
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93474
iTunes: How to back up and restore playlists
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93763
The backup you make should now have files that are perfectly compatible with iTunes for your Mac.
If you don't have access to your Windows computer any longer, you can try converting the WMA files into mp3 (or other iTunes compatible format) via a third party product:
    http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24399
    http://www.easywma.com/ (download free trial here http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23003 )
There's free trials available for those three, but I don't know their limitations.
Hope this helps, good luck =)

  • Cant Drag Music files into iTunes

    Hi there,
I have been using iTunes for ages with out any problems but from yesterday I have found that I cant drag music files from a folder (My Music etc)into iTunes library or straight to my iPod.
I can still use the "add file or folder" to library commands which work fine but I just cant drag files into iTunes like I used to. When I try I just get the circle with a line through it. The music files I am trying to drag are in the right format and I have even tried some files with are already on my iPod.
Also I use winamp as my default player. When I double click on any music files in a folder winamp will open but does not play the file. I can still select "play file" from winamp and browse for the track I want to play. That works fine.
So the same kind of thing is happening for both iTunes and winamp. I have searched for answers but still cant fix it. I have uninstalled and installed both iTunes and winamp. I remember having a problem like this before a long time ago but cant remember how to fix it.
    Its driving me insane!

Are you just looking through the main library?
My videos never show up under the main library anymore.
They just show up under the movie or tv show headers.

  • Having issues with putting purchased music back into iTunes after reinstall

I have been having issues with iTunes closing itself out right after I open it. I deleted the program, then re-installed it, which fixed the problems with quitting. However, I cannot copy my previous library back into iTunes. I saved the iTunes music file and the .xml file to my desktop before uninstalling the program. When I tried to add the music back into iTunes, I keep getting this message: Attempting to copy the disk "Macintosh HD" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to. It does not appear on all songs that I tried to add back, but it happened for quite a few of my purchased songs. Is there any way to fix the files or do I need to download the songs again? I tried running the Disk Utility to repair Permissions, but that has not helped with anything.
I am running iTunes on a MacBook with Mac OS X 10. 4. 11, if that will help with anything.

    Wow,
Wonder why XP won't let you copy files?, perhaps you used a different user name?
Or these are the old DRM versions of the songs? You should be able to log into your iTunes account and authorize the computer and iTunes should recognize the songs.
Well since you have the iPod Nano, you can head over to iLounge and ask them what current third party software works to move your iPod Nano music back to iTunes.

  • I've update my music using an external disk; now I uploaded agin the music  but it doesn't appear in Itunes. How can I synchronize the music folder with Itunes?

I've managed my music downloading and uploading it from an external disk; I put the music into the Finder MUSIC folder and copyed it into Itubìnes but it does't appear. What Do I have to do? How can I synchronize the Musice Folder with Itunes?

    Chris, thanks for the reply.
That's what I'm confused about. I did exactly what you said. I copied the entire music folder from the old computer and put it in the music folder on the new computer. I've tried that two or three times now. And, I've checked, and all of the files are there (that's what I meant by 'clicking on Itunes Media'--when I click on the iTunes media folder in music/itunes in Finder, all of the files are there). But, when I open iTunes, nothing shows up--no movies, no music, no tv shows. It seems like it should be so simple, but it won't work for me.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks so much.

  • HT1711 I have all of my music loaded into iTunes and now I can only play iTunes songs.  Can anyone tell me why?

I have all of my music loaded into iTunes but can only play the songs that I bought through iTunes.  Am I doing something wrong or can I only use the iTunes player for iTunes music?

From my post on what seems like the same issue (found here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21087892#21087892)
    Take the following steps:
    1) while connected to wifi, toggle off then back on the Show All Music and iTunes Match options shown in my original post. Important: I did this step before, but wasn't connected to wifi, and my music disappeared. Subsequently, I connected to wifi and turned off and then back on those options and everything came back though it was grayed out and my only option was to download music.
    2) To get streaming over cellular back, go into Settings>General>Cellular and scroll down to the "Use Cellular Data for:" options and make sure the iTunes option is set to 'On'
The above steps will bring back the streaming capability which seemed to go away when you update to 6.1. It didn't ACTUALLY go away, but something about the update toggled off the iTunes option in step 2 above.
I did a final test by turning off wifi, opening Music app and selecting a song. It played successfully without downloading! Crossing my fingers, but I think I'm good to go!
    Hope this helps!

  • Ripping Music CDs into iTunes

When ripping music CDs into iTunes, the tracks are occasionally saved into separate albums.… how do I avoid this? I want them in one album as they were on the CD so that I can play the music by clicking only one album.

The Gracenote database sometimes has entries that list a track via a different artist, usually when there's a guest artist on the track and so whoever uploaded the track data listed the artist as something like "Joe Smith featuring Fred Mertz". For instructions on correcting this, see:

  • I need help putting Classical Music CDs into iTunes

I need help - this question has lots of subquestions, sorry.
I have found just a few discussions that deal with this but I am still confused. Forgive me if I get wordy and misuse technical terms - I am trying to learn this thing...
I'm an iPod newbie and haven't a clue on the best way to organize my many, many classical CDs that I'd like to put onto my iPod Classic 160G. I'd also like to do this with as little fussing around as possible since there are lots of CDs I've got to deal with.
If each CD is a separate entry [album?] in the playlist and titled with composer name first [ex Bach, Brandenburg Concertos, Titov conductor] I'll have several playlist entries with the same titles, but different contents. No problem really.
But, should I separate it further, by having each concerto [say] be a separate entry in the playlist - without having to download the CD again. [I've just practiced on a few CDs but I imagine it being a problem if I had to download each CD several times - once for each work] Does it make sense to leave gaps between movements? [I'm not finding a way to remove gaps, though I have seen that suggested somewhere]
And when I come to play the pieces, if I start playing a work in a playlist, will the iPod keep going from one movement to the next as it makes its way through the playlist - or will it stop at each movement and wait for me to tell it what to do next?
Advanced Settings - are these the best? I'll be listening to music on an airplane using noise cancelling headphones and at destination attaching iPod to portable speakers to listen to music in hotel rooms.
General: Keep iTunes Music folder organized - unchecked? [not sure what this means or does or doesn't do]
Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library - checked?
Importing: AAC encoder? High quality -128 kbps?
Thanks for all your help - I know this is a multiple set of questions and perhaps should have been broken up...

Thank you so much for your help. You have sorted out a lot of problems for me. I've tried to go through what you wrote, add some more info and I have asked a few more questions below-
I re-ripped at 256. I too have the 160GB classic so it's good to know that it will take 10,000 tracks as lossless - now I have to re-rip again! I actually hadn't anticipated using the iPod with anything other than our high quality noise canceling airplane headphones, our cheap, portable travel speakers for hotel rooms and our Cambridge sound speakers for our cabin. It's that last set of speakers that makes me think I should follow you advice and go with lossless.
QUESTION #1 - When I re-rip and do an automatic sync, will the tracks at 256 automatically be replaced by the bigger lossless ones with the same name or should I delete everything from the iPod and begin anew?
"I create a playlist for each work, using a systematic naming convention..." What I did on my test was create a playlist for each composer breaking it down - ex- Bach:concertos, Bach:sonatas, etc. I have the Album column highlighted and it appears as if the movements stay together in the correct order. I fear that the task might be too large to create a playlist for each work, though that certainly is appealing.
QUESTION #2 If the Album column is highlighted and the movements are in the correct order in iTunes in the playlist, will they stay that way in the iPod?
"I tend to use just surnames for composers for example, or at least "surname, firstname"." I finally found in settings on the iPod the way to change sort by composer to last name, first name. In iTunes, the composer column which is imported from the internet search for info on the CDs gives composer with first name first and I can't find a place in iTunes to reverse this. Typing it or erasing the first name will be a huge chore.
QUESTION #3 Is there a place in iTunes to change the order of the composers' name in the composer column?
"For compilations etc I still create one for the whole CD or box set"
I figured this out on my own before you corroborated my idea - I think I'm getting the hang of this...
"The option iTunes has to "organise your music" is a good one"
QUESTION #4 - are you referring to the preferences > advanced check box "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" ? If not, what are you referring to?
"I have my library in its own dedicated disk. Wherever you put it, its important to then never change it or doing anything else with it: leave it for iTunes."
QUESTION #5 "dedicated disk"? as in hard drive? I have been using SuperDuper to back up my Mac to an external HD; I plan to put a copy of the iTunes folder onto yet another HD where I keep copies of all our photos as well.
"never change it"? I noticed a misspelling "Haendel" from the on-line CD/track info - no problem in fixing that - right? Since you later say you do change info, what is it you are never changing?
QUESTION #6 - "Disk N of M capability" - what? Where do I find this option? And when you say "for multiple CD albums, don't include the cd number in the album name." Where? when you put the CD into a playlist entry? or just in the list of music in the album column - do you change the listing?
ONE FINAL QUESTION - when I turn on the iPod when it's not attached to headphones or speakers, and I'm just looking at the screen to see settings or how the syncing worked, the iPod appears to begin playing something as soon as I turn it on. THIS IS A STUPID QUESTION, but I can't find the answer, how to I get it to stop playing without turning the iPod itself off???
"I hope that helps a little. " A little?? It helps a lot - and I'll award those points as soon as I get it all resolved.
    Thanks again,
    Mrs H

  • New to Imac, music file into itunes

Hi,Transferred my itunes folder from pc into new imac, using dvd, added to library,i drag file into itunes and it does nothing, sorry very new to this

It would be easier to answer if you use the word "iTunes" to refer to the application, and "songs" to refer to the tracks themselves, otherwise it is confusing.
The reason why iTunes still "sees" your songs is that the database files are still there even if you manually trashed the songs themselves. You need to start over IF you added no NEW music in iTunes on the new machine :- trash the iTunes folder in Music on the new iMac (iTunes should not be running).
Next, link the two computers via their FireWire ports, then start the old iMac in Target Disk Mode (hold the T key down while it is booting). The old iMac will then appear on your new iMac's desktop. Start iTunes on your new iMac, check "Copy songs to iTunes..." in Preferences. Then using Add to Library... point to your old Music Folder which is in the old iMac (and which you can access just as if it was an external HD).
If you had Protected (DRM) tracks on the old computer, you will need to Authorise your new machine in iTunes in order to play them.
