Scan photo prints to iPhoto

I have a lot of photo prints taken on old-fashioned film, before the days of digital.
I have an HP Photosmart 5520 scanner/printer which has an option for Photo Preset. The default 'Resolution' setting is 200ppi. There are other options for 75,100,300,600,1200 or 2400 ppi.
My first question is, which 'Resolution' setting should I choose ?
The scanned size at 200 ppi for one print is 2.74MB. When sent to iPhoto its size is reduced to 1MB.
Another apparent anomaly is that although the prints are all 6 inches x 4 inches, their 'info' in iPhoto can vary from anything between 1184 x 791 to 2292 x 1498, and in size from 322 KB to 985 KB.
The digital photos I already have in iPhoto, nevertheless, are all 3888 x 2592 ; but the sizes vary eg from 3.4 MB to 6.1 MB.
File > 'Get Info' for the scanned photos says they are JPEG images and 'color space' is RGB, which I understand is the requisite . . . Can  the foregoing re scanned and digital photos be explained ?
Thanks in anticipation

My first question is, which 'Resolution' setting should I choose ?
Depends entirely what you're going to be doing with the Photos. Jpeg is a lossy format, so as you edit each time you save some data is lost. If they require intensive editing, then the more data the better. Are you going to print them? Depending on your devices and the quality you hope to achieve, then perhaps the old 300 dpi for printing is a reasonable rule-of-thumb. If you're uploading them to the internet, say flickr or whatever, then 100 is fine. So, it depends on your proposed usage.
The scanned size at 200 ppi for one print is 2.74MB. When sent to iPhoto its size is reduced to 1MB
iPhoto doesn't reduce the size of anything on import. Where are you seeing these sizes mentioned?
Another apparent anomaly is that although the prints are all 6 inches x 4 inches, their 'info' in iPhoto can vary from anything between 1184 x 791 to 2292 x 1498, and in size from 322 KB to 985 KB.
No anomaly here. Your computer has no "inches" everything is measured in pixels. So the fact that an image is 6x4 in the real world is of no relevance. What matters is the pixel dimensions you choose to digitise (or scan) it. You can create a scan of you 6 x 4  that will be 600 x 400 pixels. (@100dpi) Or you can as easily create one the will be 14,400 x 9,600 (@2,400 dpi)... In other words, don't expect a direct correlation between what you hold in your hand and what you make on the screen. They're different worlds...
But again, iPhoto doesn't change anything on import, so I'd be looking at the scanner for explanations of these variations.
As to the file size, remember not all pixels are the same. An image that is pure white or pure black will have a smaller file size than one of a richly coloured sunset, and will also depend onn the resolution you scan at - so again, no direct correlation, it's a complex equation.

Are you trying to print from iPhoto on your Mac or iPad/iPhone? If you are trying to print form yor Mac, check, if the Print Products Store in the iPhoto Preferences > Advanced is set to U.K.
Also the bimmling address, Delivery address, the country for your AppleID and Credit Card must all be in the same country. Check this document:

  • Transfer photo prints to iPhoto

I have photo prints from old fashioned film rolls.
If I scan them, can they be put into iPhoto Library, and if so, will they behave the same as any digital picture ?

    It is scanning to RGB:
    Color space : RGB
    Color profile : sRGB IEC61966-2.1
If this as you explained, can I get it out of the A4 size white area it is set in, and will it perform as a standard photo if I want to print it off ?
These are settings on your scanner. I would guess is that you've put a snap on the scanner and scanned. it has now scanned the shot and the whole scanner bed. Hence you get what looks like a white page with the snap in the csntre?
If so, the best I can tell you ia to read the manual for the scanner. I can't advise you as I've never used a HP. But I'll bet that there is a facility to select just the snap to scan and not the whole bed, and that's what you are looking for.

  • Single photos printed in iPhoto come out all wrong

I'm trying to print photos from iPhoto. The problem is they come out the wrong size or with the incorrect alignment (or both). I'm printing on an Epson using 4x6 photo paper. After I've believed to set up the size and print quality in the Print dialogue box, the prints come out off-center and aligned incorrectly; sometimes they come out in thumb-nail size. What is really confusing is that it seems you can set up the photo in two different ways: one in Page Setup, and one through the Print dialogue box; doing one or both changes everything, and it's always wrong. Can someone give me step-by-step help? Thanks.

I'm afraid that I can give no solution, but am equally keen to discover and correct the issue. I have a similar problem printing from iPhoto to my HP Deskjet F380, no orientation issues (as yet) though. The print setup all seems fine and shows me what I want to print but as soon as I go to print, preview or pdf I get given something completely different and something that does not correspond to any of the other print settings. I have eliminated the printer driver as an issue - this has been re-installed and besides there are no issues with printing from any other software.

  • Why order photo prints in iPhoto?

I love iPhoto, and i really enjoy making books using it as well. I want to start ordering just normal 4x6 prints to keep as archived photos. But my problem is the pricing. Is there any justification to ordering 4x6 prints using iPhoto over ordering them from Walgreens?
Sure it's .12 a print with iPhoto, and it's .20 a print with Walgreens, but Apple charges 3.99 for shipping, and then .25 for tax.
Can someone explain to me why I'd pay this much for prints? The only time I guess I'd save money is if I had an order with over 70 prints; that way the charge for shipping and tax would be made up by the cheaper prints.
Does anyone else see the problem here? Or does anyone on here actually order prints from iPhoto? What are your experiences like? Pros and Cons from just uploading to Walgreens and picking them up? Is there a big difference in print quality?
Just curious. I love Apple products and I love using them, but this option just seems like it's not worth it to anyone

Don't use it. It is just convenience.
If you are really printing pictures for archiving, you might get to 70 pictures in a hurry!
You could also create a "photos to print" album and wait until you get a hundred or so to print.
But really, Apple will not send you an email with a sad-faced kitten asking "bradhotdog, why didn't you order your prints from us? Now we has sad."

  • Photo Printing With iPhoto

iPhoto is a good program but it is practically useless for printing on small photo paper. I use "Film Factory OS X" which I think came with my Epson R300 printer.

    Hi David,
I use Easy Photo-Print which came with my Canon Printer. I actually think the software that comes with the Printers are easier and pretty good because they were made for the Printer.

  • HT2481 photo printing from iPhoto

In iPhoto when I want to print a photo using glossy photo paper how do I get the presets to include this type of paper?
Presets only show  4 paper choices related to photo on Matte paper & photo on phot paper

Paper type is not an iPhoto selection but a printer selection and depends on you printer driver. The printer secific selections are in the last print screen - if they are nit there click on the light grey triangle to the right of the printer name on that screen

  • Photo printing from Iphoto 09 using epson r200 printer

Mac Mini, Iphoto 09, Epson stylus photo r200 printer.
Hello, I have been trying to get a decent printed photo (6" x 4" high gloss photo paper) using the above. All I seem to get are very poor quality prints. There does not seem to be a way of telling iphoto what medium I am using or the correct resolution I wish to use. Can anyone help !

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
If paper type is available it is in the printer specific options on the second print window - select the photo(s) you want to print, click print, select the printer, paper size and print size and click print - in the resulting window any available printer specific options will be in the pull down line toward the bottom of the window - if they are not click on the gray triangle to the right of the printer name to open the full window -- note that the available printer specific options are controlled by the printer driver - not iPhoto

  • How can I control where in  iPhoto my scanned photos will go? Right now they go to the very top of all the photos I have and I have to scroll the scanned photo  all the way down through 12,000 photos.

I'm scanning photos to my iphoto . After they are scanned I find them at the  beginnoing of my iphoto collection and have to scroll them down through 12,000,,photos. Is there any way I can control where the scanned photos will appear in iphoto?

You are asking about scanning photos to iPhoto on your Mac, right? This is the "iPhoto for IOS" forum, not the "iLife iPhoto" foruum for iPhoto on a Mac. Next time better post directly in the iLife forum - you will find more helpers there.
have to scroll them down through 12,000,,photos
Where do you look for your scanned photos? In the "Photos" view of the source list? I'd suggest, you look in the "Events" section. If you scan directly to iPhoto (assuming you use "Image Capture"), your scanned images will appear in the "Events" as "Unknown Project", and the events are sorted according to the settings in the "View" menu, "Sort Events" (assuming you are using iPhoto 9.x.x)
If you want them to appear in an event with a specific name, don't scan directly to iPhoto. Direct the scanned images to a folder, and then import this folder to iPhoto. Then the photos will be imported into an event with the name of the folder.

  • Color off when printing from iPhoto if photo was scanned in.

When I scan a photo to a file or into an application and try to print from iPhoto, the colors are off. Usually darker than they appear in the photo. If I do a direct print from the scanner to the printer the colors look normal (OK). Any idea if there is some type of adjustment for this?

What color profile do the pics have? Is the printer set to the same profile?

  • Saving scanned photos into iPhoto

We've just bought a Canon Pixma MP620 and I want to save the photos directly into iPhoto. Is there anyway to do this? So far I've tried dragging and dropping into iPhoto (with it open) and it hasn't worked. Nor could I get iPhoto to import into its library.

I think its down to the software that came with the printer. I use a HP Photosmart 2575 and one of the options I had to set up was scan 'jpeg to iPhoto'. This does what it says, I have used it before but I have just tried it again and after the scan it opened iPhoto and imported the jpeg. Its iLife 08 I use not sure which version of iPhoto comes with that.
I would have a look at the set up of your scanning software, you just may find an option or an option you can add. I assume if you have just bought it the printer is new, why not call the Canon help line.

  • HI, I have a Canon Pixma MG5250 printer and it doesn't seem to recognize iPhoto. All my photos are in iPhoto but I can't access them when the printer's 'photo print' box comes up.  Any suggestions? thanks

    Hi,
    I have a Mac OS X version 10.5.8
I now have a Canon Pixma Printer MG 5250 and it doesn't seem to recognize iPhoto, where all my folders of photos are in the computer.
All other aspects of the printer such as scanning and printing documents are working.  When I open the printer's
'photo print' box on my Mac, it cannot access iPhoto.
I would really appreciate any feedback and suggestions as to what to do.
    thanks.

If you want to print a photo that's in your library you should do so from iPhoto.  Select the photo, crop to the size you want to print and type Command+P to start the print process.  In the Print window select the paper size and print size, printer and then click on the Print button.

  • Had to reload drivers and updates for my HP scanjet G4050, I now enter image scan to scan photos but nowhere is there a "send" button to get them to iPhoto

Since loading Maverick and then, with the assist of Apple Support, I had to reload drivers and updates for my HP scanjet G4050, I now enter image scan to scan photos but nowhere is there a "send" button to get them to iPhoto.

Here are a couple of ideas:
    1. (my favorite) - connect the printer to the router with an Ethernet cable for virtually the same functionality, more speed and fewer connectivity issues.
    2. Reset by turning the printer off, holding # and 6 keys while and for a few seconds after turning it back on.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Can no longer print selected iPhoto photo with HP printer

iPhoto 09. Cannot print selected iPhoto photo with HP printer. I select the photo from iPhoto Library, go to File>print. The screen for Print comes up with another one on top of it that is blank but with text "Print...Processing 1..OK".  Clicking OK prints from that screen "Print, Processing page 1" (on correct 3x6 photo paper in black!).
I have run Apple Software Update. Run Permissions with problems (one: "Permissions differ on Library/Printers/h...". Have reinstalled iPhoto which has left one icon on Dock and 3 on desktop: iPhoto 07-27-19.app; iPhoto.app; iPhoto Library that I don't know what to do with with them, so just use the one on the dock which opens iPhoto Library.
Believe I read that after reinstalling iPhoto, a plug-in (possibly third party plug-in for HP?) must be installed. I have updated my HP printer to latest driver.
Would you advise how I can print photos in my iPhoto Library again, and also get those iPhoto icons off my desktop which only confuse me.  Thank you for your prompt attention.
    Out-of-patience Great Gramma

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

What version of iPhoto and system are you running?  On the guess that you're running the latest iPhoto, 9.4.2, Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the thumnails, Option #2.
2 - It may take 2-3 attempts so don't give up after only one attempt.
