Scan to computer using HP Officejet Pro 8500 produces empty pdf

Hi,
Since upgrading Windows on my computer from 8 to 8.1, the scan to computer function does not work properly. It produces a pdf file that is 0kb and when I try to open the file it says it is not a supported file or the file is damaged. The scan to USB works fine, and the scan to computer still works fine with other computers on the network that are using earlier versions of Windows.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, run the HP install wizard, run the HP diagnostic utility and the HP doctor. The HP doctor says that everything is working fine.
What can I try next?
Thanks,
Beth

Welcome to the forums Beth
Thank you for posting in the community. I will certainly do my best to help you with the scanning issue you are running into after upgrading to Windows 8.1. I would like you to try a few things.
Could you please run the HP Print and Scan Doctor again and report back to me with any errors it may show or if it shows the software is not installed. (If you can recall the tool showing if the software was installed or not, disregard running the tool again).
I would also like for you to try scanning by using Microsoft Paint to see if the scan will work that way.
There is a video on this post that will show you how to scan through Paint if you need assistance: Scanning with Paint in Windows 8
Try scanning by using the Solution Center from your desktop and let me know if you see any errors as well.
Hope to hear back from you!
Enjoy your Thursday

  • Scan to Computer problem HP Officejet Pro 8500 (A909a) OSX 10.7.5

    Good afternoon,
First of all I appologize if this question already has been asked a thousand times, but I am unable to find a solution in the somewhat simular stories. But reading thru all off them, while English is not my native language, was beginning to wear me out.
My set up is as follows:
    - HP Officejet Pro 8500 all in one - A909a
    - 2 iMac running with 10.7.5
One can be selected using the "scan to computer" and the other can't. Both have identical systems, the only difference is the one that can not be found by the printer is the one that has done all the available updates.
So far I have done an "repair permissions", looking for additional updates and finally an uninstall of the software. I installed the programme HP_Installer_Officejet_Full_Group05_10.6.dmg (which I believe is the one that came with the printer) after which it all works again. So problem fix I know... but when checking for updates using the Apple update, there is an update waiting for me and when I run that one, that computer dissapears again from the "scan to computer sellection).
For now I am keeping the update sitting in the Apple Update and happily use all the functions, but I am curious (and a bit OCD with the fact there is an update hahaha), can I ever have my software up to date without having to loose that function? Or is there another update/fix I can try using the up to date software?
Thanks in advance for any response!

Welcome to the forums, I hope you are well
I noticed your post and have read it thoroughly. My first question to you is, what is the update that is waiting? I would like to know about the update before we continue.
Please let me know and I will gladly look into this some more for you!
    Best wishes,

  • Scanning Problems with an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500

I have an iMac running the latest version of Snow Leopard. I have had the HARDEST time, since purchasing my iMac in Dec 2010, scanning documents with my HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 printer. What happens is usually one of two things: 1) Only half of the page fills the scan window, or; 2) The entire document fills the scan window BUT the SCAN button is greyed out so that it cannot be selected!
Yes, I have done the whole delete the current printer drivers, get the drivers through Software Update, reset the printing, etc. None of that has worked (well, on occasion it works for a while). I am not using the drivers that came with the HP 8500; I'm told that you should use the drivers from Apple Software Update.
I have discussed this with Apple Support. They say I need to purchase  Apple Protection Care for them to address this. This is weird, considering that this appears to be a software problem with software supplied by Apple!
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Hi,A phone cable connection to a landline is required for faxing. Generally, a wireless connection only refer to the connection with a computer for printing and scanning, it do not refer to a fax setup. Regardless, the specific device does not support any wireless connectivity but only a wired network or a USB. Regards,Shlomi

I would like to help you setup your scan to email. During the profile setup process, you might be asked for SMTP server name, SMTP port number, or authentication information. You can contact the email/Internet service provider or system administrator for the information. SMTP server names and port names are typically easy to find by doing an Internet search. For example, use terms like “gmail smtp server name” or “yahoo smtp server name" to search.

  • Hp officejet pro 8500 wireless a909g scan with Windows 7

I have been using HP officejet pro 8500 a909g wireless with windows xp with no problems scanning.  I got a laptop with windows 7 64 bit and cannot scan to the computer from the solution center software on the computer or from the display on the unit like I used to be able to do.  When I try to scan, it says that it is scanning and then quits after a short time.  Nothing happens with the scanner.  The Solution Center also sees the document is loaded.  I have tried the scanning software program to see if something is wrong but it says all is fine.  What do I need to do?

There is a way to launch the scan application directly.
Go to c:\program files\hp\digital imaging\bin and double click on hpiscnapp.exe
See if you are able to complete a scan this way
    If that doesn't work,
    Rename the twain folder:
Navigate to C:\Windows and double click on it
Scroll down to the twain_32 folder, and rename the folder twain_32 old .
Then, Delete the whole Digital Imaging folder in the program files above and then do an install/reinstall which will repopulate the folder. NOTE: If you have multiple HP imaging devices (other printers, scanner, or cameras) Do not delete the Digital Imaging folder or you will need to reinstall those items.

  • Scanning to Computer, HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All in one Printer A909g

I am unable to scan to computer with Win 8.1 using my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless all in one Printer A909g.  I can scan to email.  The system says my drivers and software are up to date.  When trying to scan to computer all I get is a blank scan file with no scan number (Scan_Doc0054) as I used to with Vista.  In Vista I was able to drive the whole process from my computer.  When scanning to email now I have to drive it from my printer as opposed to the computer.
I restarted an old computer running Vista and the 'scan to computer' function is operational.  As far as I am aware there are no other functional problems with the printer.
Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hi John046,

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 : Use scanner without print heads/cartridges

    Hello.
I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500 (CB023A) that I bought specifically because of the automatic duplex scanner. Buying a scanner with automatic duplex instead of this multifunction printer was out of the question because the cheapest one costed over ten times more than this multifunction printer (and they still do).
I can no longer afford to keep buying print heads and cartridges just to use the scanner, as this multifunction uses ink for scanning!!! But that is beside the point.
I have read in other posts about taping sensors but I was thinking about going a little further and completely remove the printing part of the multifunction. Anyone knows if I can just disconnect the printing part from the circuit board? Or will I have to fiddle with software? Maybe some hidden option in the "Mfg Commands" (accessible by pressing * and # with the printer on) or some other hidden feature?
Considering that this multifunction takes way too long to boot because of all the print head checking/cleaning/etc, with a little luck, without the printing part the boot time will decrease to almost nothing .
Before I start disassembling I would appreciate some advice, specially if someone else has already tried it.
    Thank you in advance.

Hello kamath27. Thank you for your reply.
I apologize for not replying sooner but I wanted to try and disassemble the multifunction before replying instead of just replying with an acknowledge.
Also, sorry for such a long post but I wanted to be as detailed as possible.
However, before describing what I did and found, I want to clarify something.
With the multifunction in the same condition it came from the factory, if I remove one print cartridge, or one is empty, the multifunction stops on boot with a message requesting to change the cartridge before continuing and there is no way to bypass it. When this message shows, pressing any button on the multifunction or the screen yields no result (there is no OK button displayed on the multifunction screen). It was always like this and firmware updates never solved it.
And going to the printer control panel on the connected computer says that the printer is offline even if it is connected through USB and is displayed in device manager as a connected USB device. This is the reason why I had spent so much money buying ink that I do not use. I never print anything on this multifunction. All prints that the multifunction ever performed were a dozen or so of maintenance align and test pages.
Now for what I did. I disassembled the multifunction just enough to take out the main circuit board, the wireless board, the buzzer and the door sensors. I set up the printer half and the scanner half side-by-side with the main circuit board in the middle, reconnected everything and turned it on in order to test if anything stopped working during disassembly. Everything was OK and the multifunction worked as normal (printed a test page and scanned it to the computer).
Next, while facing the main board the same way it would be faced while mounted in the multifunction, I started disconnecting the connectors (except the ones that belong to the scanner half) one by one from left to right in the following fashion: With the multifunction OFF, I disconnected one connector, turned the multifunction on, waited for any message or the main screen, tried to print a test page and then scan it, and finally disconnected the multifunction, reconnected the connector and moved on to the next one.
    The results were:
    - disconnected the tray feeding sensor -> Allows to boot with a paper jam message that can be bypassed with an OK on the screen. Can not print because of the alleged paper jam but can scan.
    - disconnected the pump -> Allows to boot but a message keeps popping about pump motor stalled. Can be bypassed with an OK but pops right back and all jobs get aborted. Can not print or scan.
    - disconnected the printer motor -> Oddly, no messages. Allows to boot and scan but not print. This was strange because when trying to print there is no message in the printer and the software on the PC only said the printer was busy. I would think the printer would eventually display a message saying the print carriage was jammed or something but nothing happened after 10 minutes. I might test again later as one test may be interfering with the next.
    - disconnected the print cartridge door sensor -> Stops on boot with a message to close the door. Does not allow to print or scan.
    - disconnected the print cartridges connector -> Stops on boot with message to replace cartridges. Does not allow to print or scan.
    - disconnected the print heads connector -> On boot briefly displays a screen with the image of the power button and the code "C00E0060" below. Then the screen turns white and all buttons on the multifunction start blinking. It is as described here but resetting the multifunction, reconnecting the connector and turning it on took it back to operational condition.
    - disconnected everything except for the scanner connectors and the tray and door sensors - Gives the exact same behaviour as the previous test (code "C00E0060").
So, from the tests it seems that I can not use the scanner if anything from the printer half is disconnected. Any ideas on how to circumvent this, if possible?
    Thank you.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 won't scan

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 set up wireless.  It prints from my computers fine. Makes copies fine.  It won't scan.  I get messages saying it is in useas a scanner or that it can't communicate with the scanner.  Disabling firewalls doesn't solve problem.

Okay, I have found the solution to about 85% of your problems. Just throw it away (J/K). What I did was.......
Uninstall the entire HP Products from my PC. Then Reinstalled using the HP installation disc. Now here is the part that 8500 users need to do in order to scan documents to they're computer.
Click Start menu, Then click All Programs, Then click HP, Then click HP 8500 folder (in my case its HP Officejet pro 8500 A910) , Then click connect a new Printer, then select Network (Ethernet/Wireless), Follow the steps and installation steps (I know it seems like you've done this already when installing the software, but it's doing something different. TRUST ME) And Voila. No need to thank me, Im just saving alot of people out there some headaches. Now to let mines go. Whew

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 Premium will not fax from computer with Windows 8

My printer worked great on Win XP and I could fax directly from the printer or from the computer.  I installed Windows 8 32 bit (I'm running an older system that works fine for everything I use it for -thank you very much), and downloaded the latest greatest HP driver & software for Win 8 32 bit.  Everything works perfectly, except faxing from the computer.
If I run the fax test from the printer, the fax test PASSES.  If I run the fax test from the computer, the fax test PASSES.
If I put documents in the printer feeder and use the printer fax functions, it faxes beautifully.
It is only when I fax from the computer, the screen pops up with a status of spooling, then the status turns to Cancelled every time.
It always worked on Win XP.
The FAX printer and FAX driver for the FAX printer showed up in Control Panel automatically when I installed the updated drivers/software from HP.  All the properties on the FAX printer look good.
I tried a usb connection, and a network ethernet connection, with the same results.
Printing and scanning all work fine.  I really like this printer, and I would like it even more if I could figure out how to get it to fax a document from the computer.
When I say fax from the computer, I mean opening a document, saying Print, selecting Fax - HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910, filling in the fax information page, selecting my cover page options, and pressing the send fax.  All just like I used to do before I upgraded to Win 8.  When I hit send fax, that is when I get the popup that the fax is spooling, then it goes to cancelled.  No error codes are displayed, no clues as to why, no nothing.  If I print the document and put it in the printer document feeder, I can fax it using the printer display screen no problem.
    Very bizarre.
    This question was solved.

Alright, I spoke with some of the engineers and they suggested the next few steps. First, here is a thread on an MS forum about removing a driver in an alternate fashion.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730875.aspx
Another thing to note is that in Win8 you can easily access the Command Prompt by hitting the windows key and typing “command prompt.”
Additionally, I will PM you some further steps on removing the vestiges of the software from the back-end of your PC. You will HAVE to be sure to follow those instructions to the letter.
Do these two things and let me know what happens after you install the printer again from the direct download link I have already provided above.
Let me know and have a great day!

    Hi,
The problem seems to lie in the installer, which has an unusual bad behaviour.  The installer puts the 8500 a909a in the list of USB  bootable devices.  (Not good!!!)
When the printer is disconnected it isn't a problem.  When the printer is connected the computer tries to boot from the printer and the computer hangs.
When I found the printer in the BIOS list of USB bootable devices I DISABLED that item in that list. Then it booted normally.
But now the BIOS takes an extra 30 seconds or so but boot up seems to be preceeding normally.
The guys on the CHAT and PHONE lines didn't even imagine the installer might be a problem so their advice was useless. They were blaming the computer.  More importanly, they didn't have a way to escalate the problem. They  had no capacity to respond in a flexible manner. It was like dealing with unhelpful staff in the county clerk's office.
