Scanned document: PC = 400 kb, Mac = 16 MB – Help?

Hello everyone,
I do proofreading work and was advised to buy an 'all in one' scanner/fax/printer, etc. as I need to send regularly up to 50 A4 pages of corrected black and white text. A friend who works with a PC suggested a Hewlett Packard 3030, which works fine, but when I scan 20 pages of B/W text I get around 16 MB. With a PC it's around 400 kb. HP have checked everything and they say it's just the way Macs are made and they don't have any answers.
HP did the test on PC and Mac, 300 dpi, saved as a pdf and got the same results. I've tried asking so many Apple service numbers and dealers (I've given up on the HP), I just need a scanner that will scan my perfectly normal B/W sheets of paper to the same file size as a PC. Clearly the file sizes are too big to use and I'm losing work just sending back jobs by fax.
Anybody help?
Neil

It simply sounds like the settings you have set in the scanner software is different.
when I scan 20 pages of B/W text I get around 16 MB. With a PC it's around 400 kb.
That's not right.
A single 8.5 x 11 page @ 300 dpi is gonna be ~1.2 MB.
To get 50 pages to be only 400kb, they are being compressed.
You are scanning as a jpeg on the PC and as a bitmap on the Mac.

  • Mac os x 10.7.4 connected to a photosmart c309a. Scan documents to word and edit?

I have a mac os x 10.7.4 connected to a photosmart c309a.  I use the mac drivers to scan document.  Everything is updated and working fine.  However, I would like to scan a document, copy it to word, and edit.  How can I do this?

The OCR software does not necessarily need to integrate with the HP Photosmart driver.  You scan the document, save it as a JPG, TIFF, PDF or whatever and then run the OCR software against the scanned file.
I use Readiris with an HP AIO printer on Lion and it works just fine, using MS Word to edit the results.

  • How to organize scanned documents on my mac

I would like to find how to organize scanned documents on my mac so that they are cagorized and identifiable files

I would change the file name from "Scan001" (or however your scanner saves them) to something helpful like HikingTrip1, HikingTrip2, etc. Then drag and drop them into folders you create with more names helpful to you. To quickly change a file name you can highlight the file icon and then single click on the file name portion and it will allow you to type. Is this what you meant?

I have a MacBook Air (10.8.2) connected to a Canon MP530 printer.    I am unable to scan documents as it appears my Mac does not support MP Navigator.   Any ideas?     I have made an inquiry to Canon but have not received any answers yet.

Why do you say your MBA won't support it? MP Navigator for OS X 8 and the MP530 is available here.

  • How do I make a scanned document editable?

Is there an app (or program) already on my Mac that allows me to edit a scanned document, or to scan directly into Pages or Word For Mac?  I don't mind purchasing a program, if necessary, but it seems Mac has lots of functionalities built in... if you know where to find it.

You need OCR (optical character recognition) software.
It's not built in to OS X, so you'll have to search for a solution. There is an abundant selection in the App Store. Here is one and there are many others.
Readiris has been around for a very long time. I used it a while ago, but it's expensive, and there may be better alternatives today.
I have none in particular to recommend, so read the reviews and choose accordingly.

  • I know only Javascript and would like to convert a large numbers of scanned documents into layers to mount on white a4 canvas

I have got more than 400 scanned documents of A4 size. But they are not of uniform size. Luckily they are all of 300 dpi. They were created on a scanner. When opened in photoshop they contain random patches that are transparencies, although there seems to be no difficulty viewing themon adobe reader.
My laptop had "Gb RAM and does not accept CS4 I have Photoshop CS3. My javascript and photoshop are both limited to basic skills.
I would like to mount each document on a white A4 sized photoshop background of300dpi, as a layer, flatten it out and save as the desired page.
As this is rather time-consuming, I would like to have a script that will perform this task, on a single file.
I would like to manually run this script on each file.
If possible I would additionally like to  put the individual pages in a folder and run the script repetetively on all files in the folder.
Any suggestions or held will be gratefully appreciated
    thanks, peter

I am trying to scan document that I will then attach in an email.  When I attach it it shows up as a picture within the email instead of an attachment an people can't open it.  Any help here?

What kind of Mac are you using, and what version of the operating system?
You should be able to select the document that you want to attach and then use the contextual menu (right click in some worlds) to compress the document, producing a .zip file. You can then attach that to the email and it won't appear as a picture within the email.
If I recall this correctly, the "compress" part in the contextual menu may have a different terminology.

  • I want to attached scanned documents as an attachment.  So far in PDF and Jpeg the entire document appears

Summary: Sending scanned documents as an attachment.  In PDF and JPEG the entire document is displayed rather than an Icon

As long as you used the paper-clip Attach icon, that should be fine.
The entire document appears to you because your Mac recognizes the document type, and displays it for you, saving you from having to mouse around and find a Reader for it. You can still use the Save icon to save a copy of only the attachment.
To avoid problems with other email readers, be sure the checkbox [√] send windows-friendly attachments is checked.
I addition, some email readers cannot cope with any attachments positioned at any place in the document other than at the very end. So make sure you move the cursor to the absolute end of the document before clicking "Attach".
If all else fails, send an email that says, "attachment to follow", then send the attachment right away in a separate email, with nothing else in the body of the message. Some use the Subject abbreviation (nt) to indicate "no text", that is, no words typed in the message portion.

  • Hey, q about scanning documents to pdf.

    Hello all
I want to scan documents to pdf, everday we have about 400 documents shipping documents from our waerchouse and we want to archivizate them in pdf. We need a programm who can scan this documents to pdf and write them in seperate files, on the documents are barcodes, the barcodes could be used to seperate the document. PLZ help and sry for me English.

If you have a scanner, it should come with its own scanning software.  Alternatively you can download it from the manufacturer's website.
You can also use Adobe Acrobat to scan documents, which allows you to do text recognition (OCR).  However, I have found that the original scanning software allows you much more functions than Acrobat does.

    Hi TLC20,
Thank you for your reply! I was wondering if you are able to copy with A4 paper.
In the meantime, please try the following:
Load the A4 paper on the ADF face up.
On the Mac, click on the Apple Icon, click on System Preferences, Click on Print & Scan, Select your printer in the list, click on Scan tab, then click on Open Scanner.
Make sure that Document Feeder is selected not Flatbed. Then change the paper size to A4.
Hope this helps you, and have a great day!

    Hi,
The default scan workflow configured to scan documents as Black and White. Make sure to change the scan settings to scan documents with color:
    1. Open the HP Utility and select your device.
    2. From Scan Settings open the "Scan to Computer".
    3. Click the Scan Tasks tab.
    4. Select the affected shortcut and click on Edit... (or just double-click the shortcut).
    5. In the section of Scan from an HP Device click on the blue triangle or the Show Details button to enlarge the menu.
    6. From the enlarged menu now open the drop-down menu next to Mode
    7. Now select the Color option and then click on OK to save the changes. The next scanned document using this workflow will appear in color.

  • Do you also crash Preview  when opening scanned document pdf file?

I recently crashed Mail when opening a message coming from my IAP with an attached pdf file. The cause is a crash of preview.app that I can repeat. Therefore the file (a scanned document) can be opened by Acrobat Reader. I found in some forum that AcrobatReader had a a similar problem a few months ago, now fixed. • Scan 3 wont open on mac

    Mac Powerbook running OSX 10.9
Longtime HP Deskjet 35050 printer working fine but Scan 3 suddenly won't open. Click on icon and ... nothing.
    Help please!

    Hi @clairescomputer,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums! I see you are not able to use HP Scan 3 with your HP Deskjet 2050, you are using the new Mavericks OS with your Mac  PowerBook.
Because you are using the Mavericks OS X you must install the printer using the Apple Updates. Please click on the link below, this document explains how to install the print driver on a Mac for a USB or a network connection. The OS X v10.9 Mavericks driver for your printer is available through Apple Software Update (ASU). Additionally, you can perform basic print jobs using AirPrint without installing a driver.
OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac
Once you have installed the HP Deskjet 3050, you may notice the features you once had are limited or there are workarounds, for scanning with or without HP Software see below:
How to Scan: OS X v10.9
    I hope this helps!
    Thanks again,

  • Where is my scanned document?

I downloaded two scanned documents from my laptop.  They appear on My Computer,(devices with removable storage) when it's connected to my laptop as Tif files, but I cannot find them on my pre phone when I disconnect from my laptop.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I've done some testing with a new TIF file that I created on my Mac.  If I save a screen capture out as a tif file, and then copy if to the folder "Downloads" on my Pre's USB drive, I am unable to view it using any of the pre-installed applications on my Pre.
I also spent some time checking the Palm App Catalog for a file viewer or other application that can view TIFF files.
It may not be possible at this time to view TIFF files on a webOS device.
In the mean time, I would suggest that you try converting the .tif file into a .jpg file that webOS can view.
