Scanned images makes pages slow, causes crash

I have a 40 page document into which I have scanned about 15 pages. The Pages doc is 388mb and is slow to open, in fact it pretty much just crashes at this point. I managed to export it to Word and the same doc. is only 2.3mb and opens easily and I can still work in it. I would prefer any tips that would make oit possible for me to do the whole doc. in pages.
Thanks in advance.

In professional prepress where scans are of significant size, the assembly application lets you link to the scan instead of including the scan in the pagination document.
This leads to problems no end since you can't colour manage what you can't include, and you can have links break which leaves you without what it was you linked to.
So on the whole putting the scans into the pagination is a safer solution, but not if the assembly application crashes, of course.
Here a few things you can do to slim the size of your scans.
First, size your scans before you place them rather than placing scans that are oversize and then scaling them in the interface which still leaves the oversize scan behind the scenes.
Second, select a compression format for your scans that is sensible for what they are scans of - for monochrome 1 bit select Bitmap, for grayscale and colour select JPEG.
JPEG supports colour management in the application as does TIFF, but TIFF does not support compression. If you intend to print on a press, you will need to select image sharpening and OutputIntent for the specific printing condition.

  • Screenshots to Pages doc causes crash when printing

I'm creating a document on Pages that has several screenshots on the document (creating a user manual). When I try to print the document, Pages crashes and it will not print. I removed the screenshots and was able to print. I deleted the original screenshots and created new ones with same issue. It places them in my print queue on hold, but when I tell it to resume it just deletes it out of the queue.
Outside of telling me not to use screenshots, does anyone know a fix for this?
    I'm using Pages '09, version 4.1.

    Are they straight (plain) screenshots?
    In what file format?
Have you put any special effects on them, such as shadows, reflections, frames, transparency?
How many screen shots, and how many per page?
Have you tried printing just one page with one screen shot on its own? If so what happened?
As fruhulda says, what printer? …and do you have the necessary printer driver installed?

  • Need help editing scanned images of old photo album pages PSE 9

Before I begin this project, I thought I'd get some advice from someone who has undertaken a similar project.  I have three photo albums from the 50's and 60's.  The albums were made by my mother who mounted the photos (mostly black and white but some color photos) on construction paper (of various colors) using the corner holders or glue.  She hand cut the construction paper so each page is not a perfect rectangle ( about 11" tall, 8.5" wide).  The pages were punched and put into a three-ring binder.
She added text to the edge of the photo and/or to the construction paper.  Each page contains one to 6 photos and text.  Each album has about 120 pages.  I want to keep the notes on the construction paper so I scanned each page into a TIF files, 400 dpi and stored the images in a separate folder for each volume.
I use (poorly) PSE 9.  I see it has a auto straighten/crop feature that can be used one photo at a time.  I tried the divide scanned images function and that did not fully separate all images on the page and also created an image for stray objects on the page such as an unused corner holder.  (I know those things have a better name but it escapes me now.)
I plan to create photo books for my siblings.  I am now thinking of cropping the image of each page (rather than each photo on the page) into a uniform size, adjusting levels, contrast and sharpness, saving this image to a JPEG file, and using these edited JPEG images to create the photo book.  Since each page was hand-cut, there will areas of white where one page was torn or cut smaller than another page.  Some pages will have blanks where old photos have been lost leaving behind only the corner things.  It won't be perfect but it will be an image of the album as it exists today.
    My questions are:
The pages are about 11 by 8.5.  Does anyone know a photo service that prints photo albums in a portrait layout in this size?  I  have been unable to find one; it looks like most online photo books are wider rather than taller.
Let's assume I use a company such as Shutterfly that offers a 12x12 format.  I assume it would be better to edit the images in PSE9 rather than any online software.  What should I do to keep the proportions in the current images true but make the image fit a 12x12 page, for example?
IS there any other editing software anyone can recommend that will speed this up, hopefully a software that would take multiple photos at one time, auto-straighten and auto crop to a set size?  And also auto contrast/level/sharp.  If I could use such auto features on these images and then go back and adjust the photos that did not play well with the auto features, that would save me time.
I appreciate anyone's input.  I dread doing this but we have one set of photos and 5 siblings so it has to be done.  Thanks!

    Hi,
Mentioning your issues one by one:
    1) PSE does not have any portrait Photobook available, so your thought was the best way to get the work done is by choosing the 12x12 - shutterfly one.
    2) PSe does a good job of editing the images. You can set your images of approx. 11x8  size to fit to the 12x12 page. Just choose a one photo page Layout for the page and then right click on the image to " Fit photo in the frame".
    3) If more edits are required for the image, you can easily go to Advanced mode and edit your photos, layouts, move the frames, images or add effects to the images.
    4) Photo book creation sure takes time. because, you want it to be the best. I am sure PSE would help you best here.
Go ahead and create you photobook. Inc ase you get stuck somewhere, you can always post here to get help!
    Cheers,

  • Scanned images crashing lr 3.5

After upgrading to3.5, my scanned images from negatives (tiff dng files created in Vuescan 9) crash the program as soon as I make an adjustment in the lens corrections panel. This was not an issue before I upgraded from 3.4.1. Worse, the scanned images that I edited with the lens corrections panel before upgrading crash the program as soon as I try to bring them into the develop module. This is so unacceptable to me me I can hardly stand it. I've tried Googling the problem, but I'm not coming up with anything. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm using two scanners (Canon 9000F and Plustek 7600i) and import 48bit ProPhoto RGB TIFF files with no issues in LR 3.5 on Windows 7 64bit. It could be due to some incompatibility with Vuescan's DNG file format or preferences setttings:
    http://photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/00Tfhm
I understand why you are using DNG, but for scanner output it may not be the best choice. I routinely do post-scan "destuctive" Photoshop editing of my TIFFs after importing them into Lightroom. This can include spot removal, image cleanup, rotation, and cropping, all of which are much easier to do with PS's more advanced tools. I work on my TIFF scan image files simultaneously in PS and LR, with LR automatically updating my saved PS changes "real-time." DNG's can NOT be modified!
If you have the same issues with TIFFs try opening them in Photoshop or PS Elements, check the profile Vuescan assigned and then resave the file from inside PS. See if that corrects the problem.

  • How to make my own custom photo album background from scanned image?

I know how to use the custom backgrounds within photoshop elements 5.0 but I would like to create my own. I have scanned a map of Big Bend National Park that I used as a DVD title menu and would like to make a photo album and use the same scanned map as the backgroud for all pages. Is that doable in elements 5.0? Can I just add the scanned image into the custom folders somehow?

My thought is to create a single thread, and within
that thread continually pull from a static array
casting each to an EventObject type. But I am confused
also as to how to dispatch the events to their
appropriate listeners. This is commonly known as a ProducerConsumerQueue: you have multiple sources of events, and multiple consumers for those events. The queue mediates between producers and consumers.
In the case of an event thread, the queue runs in one thread, and all the producers run in other threads. In the case of the Swing/AWT event thread, the producer is the GUI code in the JVM, which receives OS-level (considering X an OS for the moment!) window events and then puts them on the queue, associated with the correct object.
You'll find a LinkedList a better choice for the queue than a static array, as it can grow or shrink without bounds. The consumer side calls removeFirst(); if nothing's in the List, it calls wait(). The producer side calls addLast(), followed by notify(). Needless to say, you'll need synchronization, but you don't want to synchronize your listeners ... that's a fun problem that's left for the reader.
The various listener lists can be maintained with Maps, where the event object is used to lookup a list of listeners. In a GUI environment, the event object has to maintain the source as well as the event object; in a non-GUI environment, it typically only holds the event type.

  • Reader X displays scanned images as blank, grey pages

I have a great many PDFs (version 1.5) that are now unreadable with Acrobat X. These pages consist of scanned images that were converted to PDF, but now the pages are grey. You can search the OCR of the documents as before, but you can't see the pages. I have other PDFs that were created the same way at the same time, but don't have that problem, so it's inconsistent. The problem does not exist with Reader 9.

In my case: v10.1.1 would not open more than one pdf at a time on a user workstation (although mine did) so I tried disabling protected mode and made sure the large image display setting was correct.
To no avail. Reinstalled version base version 10, checked the same settings...no joy
Also tried repairing the install and re-updated from the base v10...still no love
Solution for me: Opened reader X, under Help-->Online Support, there is an option to generate a system report which availed the following:
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
        Version: 7.15.10.9685
        Check: Not Supported
And of coarse the most recent driver was already present. Had to go back to v9.4
All good now. Hope this saves someone a few hours!

  • Why Does 3D Reposse cause crashes and work so slow?

Why Does 3D Reposse cause crashes and work so slow?   I get the pinwheel of death when I use this feature.  It works at a snails pace.  I liked the 3D Type effects in iIllustrator.  Why couldn't Adobe have added all the Reposse features to Illustrator instead of craming all these new features into Photoshop?
They're worthless if the program needs an hour to process every selection.

What are your OS specs, your Video Card and your Preferences > Performance settings?
Why Does 3D Reposse cause crashes and work so slow?
My guess would be because it has to create a whole bunch of polygons and your computer-set-up may be insufficient for the task.

  • IPhoto crashes when importing groups of large, scanned images

I have a folder of 16 scanned images, that range in size from 3 MB to 50 MB (first time scanning and scanned at really high resolution so they could be blown up in books or calendars - have learned better since). iPhoto quits when I try to import the whole folder. If I drag them into iPhoto one or two at a time, they import. Is there a size limit on what iPhoto will import? I have not reached the 250,000 size limit on iphoto itself. But I am well over 100,000 photos. I have a large number of folders that have as many or more scanned images in them and do not want to have to compress each one singly for import into iPhoto, or to drag by ones or twos into the app. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the Console messages for iPhoto to see if there's any indication what's making iPhoto choke on importing more than a couple of those files at a time. Can you import more from a camera? What's the format and color mode and profile of those scanned files?

  • Restoring .dmg image from external to Mac HD in Disk Utility: "Unable to scan image (Input/output error)"

    Hi guys,
So I've got a problem with restoring the image backup I did (using Disk Utility) of my 500GB HD on my MBP which was acting weird or maybe even crashed a few months ago. After creating the backup image and putting it on my external device, I installed Mavericks back to see if everything was alright (mainly the HD) and everything seems okay.
I did try restoring the backup image through disk utility before installing mavericks (thus erasing everything again on the HD) AND after. But nothing..
The whole process starts fine and then it starts scanning the image when after maybe a good 10-15min in I get a message that says that it was unable to scan the image. I tried verifying the disk(s), everything came out "OK". Also tried scanning it through Images > Scan image for Restore... with the same results.
While searching I've seen people getting messages like "Unable to scan filename.dmg (Invalid argument)" and "Unable to scan filename.dmg
(Internal error)" but none have (Input/output error)
    The screen grab is below.
I also came across something about using terminal/commands but I'm not that savvy with it, especially considering that those there had issues with either mounting or trouble finding the image.
I've also tried moving the backup image to a different external device 2TB and also the desktop because I read it may have to do with the format of the externals or maybe free space. But THEN I would get a message saying
"The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Mac HD Backup.dmg" can't be read or written. Error code -36"
Fyi ALL my externals are HFS+/Journaled and the backup image format was compressed.
I REALLY don't know what to do next. Was it the wrong move to create a dmg image? Have I lost everything? Is there still a way out?
    If anyone can help, THANKS!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • Why is the preview or scan images as separate files grayed out? When it was working just fine before

I have windows 8...I have been using this scanner for about a month. My scan/fax/printer is a Brother MFC-8910DW. This is what brothers website says regarding this make and model. "Scan multi-page documents using the 50-page capacity auto document
feeder or use the legal-size document glass for bound materials." For the Full month it has been scanning multiple pages using Microsoft scan a document or picture. I tried to scan this morning and it will now only let me scan ONE page at a time.(( I
have to scan over 800 pages!!) On the lower left corner there is a box I was able to click previously it says preview or scan images as separate files. It is now grayed out and I am unable to select it. I know for a fact it has nothing to do with my printer
because I use it for a month and it worked beautifully. Please could someone help with this issue?

    Hi,
For this issue, I would suggest you update to the latest printer driver, if you have any other related printer\scanner programs installed, please make sure that you have the latest version or reinstall as a test.
It's recommended to contact the manufacture for members there are more familiar with this product

  • Scan images into Forms app / Twain scanner

Can you provide your thoughts on how to have a Form ***QUICKLY*** scan and crop passport photo size images from a scanner
Speed of data entry is essential so I would like to minimize the total time and keep the mouse and key click count down.
I would like to do as much as possible within the form window. Scanning directly into an image on the form would be nice as the current app does this via a Twain scan
The scanned image will be stored in a file (either on the Forms application server or in the client MS-Windows file system ). The file name will be stored in the database and displayed in the form. Im not sure if the image needs to be displayed in the form window or not.
The scanned images are passport sized photos of face.
The user needs to make minimum changes to the photo - usually only cropping.
Are there any Java beans that will help do this ? Should I use OLE via WEB_UTIL ? Any other ideas ?
    Thanks
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Environment : Forms 10g (9.0.4.0.19), Database 10gr2, Window client, Linux / Unix application server, scanners are Twain compatible or can scan to file.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks - that is the info I was hoping for.
There are Forms java bean solutions from two different people on that page. Ill try and get in touch with them and see if I can sponge the code off them.
In the meantime, please post more suggestions if you have them

  • Scan Image for Restore?

I created a disk image last night to prepare for my upgrade to Snow Leopard and then this morning moved to the final step of "Scan Image for Restore" and I was wondering if anyone had any insights into how long this would take. It's been running for about an hour now and the progress bar doesn't show any progress, just shows the fast moving blue hashes in the bar. Is this normal, or is it possibly hung up on something? Note, the light on my external drive continues to blink, which makes me think it is doing something, just not sure if it is progressing and this just takes several hours, or if something is wrong. Any help is appreciated.

It can take a very long time, depending on size of the Image, and even slower via USB.
I think a much faster, better, more useful method is to clone your drive, then you'll have a bootable version of exactly what you have now.

I've been using Arles Image Web Page Creator on a friends Windows computer to almost effortlessly make pages with thumbnails of many, many images. I have over a hundred yearbooks with about many pages each to turn into web pages and was wondering if IWeb can do the same thing as Arles, and, if not, can anybody recommend a Mac application that will. Thank you very much.
