Scanner for photos

I'm looking for some scanner recommendations to research specifically for photo. I don't have slides or negatives just a lot of 4x6 photographs I want to scan to create digital archives that I'll keep in Aperture.
Thanks,
Jerry

Just about any scanner will do an okay job of 4x6 prints. If you want something to do a great job and have the flexibility of doing negs/positives down the road the epson v700 is nice for a reasonable prices as well as the Microtek i800/i900 on the used market - dirt cheap.
If you have an all-in-one HP or Canon or Epson try it and see what you don't like about it before putting out dollars on a dedicated scanner.

  • Need suggestions for photo printer that will work with a dedicated HP G4050 scanner on Windows 7

I was told by HP Tech Support that they didn't recommend I try to run an all-in-one printer and a dedicated scanner on the same PC.  Dilemma is that most photo printers sold today are also all-in-ones.   Also, many all-in-ones don't seem to rate very high on photo quality.   Do I end up buying two printers - one for text and another for photos or what?
Your input is welcome as I've researched this problem for a long time and don't know what printer to buy!  Thank you.

Yes, I do know that; but the basic driver doesn't allow all of the menu options on the printer to work.  For instance, it won't tell me how much ink is left in each cartridge, etc.
I'm debating whether to just keep my old Photosmart 8150 and keep plugging along until it dies and then worry about replacing it OR keep looking for a new one.
Problem is that HP Tech Support told me that they DON'T recommend I use an all-in-one printer AND a dedicated scanner together due to possible software issues.  Since most of the photo printers made this year seem to be AIO's it's been a very difficult experience finding an older printer that has a Full Solution Driver in WIN 7 and/or 8!  Oh, you can find some but they cost an arm and a leg even at used prices!
Anyone with experience using an HP dedicated scanner AND a printer is welcome to jump in and give me some feedback. Thank you so much!  : )

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 will not recognize Epson V600 Photo scanner  for film ?

For some reason the WIA support in PE9 will only recognize the scanner for reflective prints not film, why ?
But, in the PE 6 the Epson V600 scanner  is recognized for film scanning,, in professional mode  and automatic.
    Any clues ?

  • Which is better HP or Epson scanner for iMac 27"?

HP or Epson best scanner for iMac 27"?

    Put it this way:
I have a 6 year old Epson scanner that has sucessfully scanned 16,000+ photos, plus umpteen documents.
If for some reason I was faced with having to buy another scanner, Epson would be first place I would look. Canon would be second (love their printers), HP would be last.
Please don't ask me why, this is a purely subjective gut-feeling opinion!

  • Various organization schemes for photos.

The yearly organization via iPhoto doesn't help me. Many of my photos are imported from the scanner; the year of the scan is not the same as the year the photo was taken. Also I do not want to do a one-by-one date change.
I would like to have all the photos on my drive in one folder using the names I enter for them so I can search for photos by the name and not by the year it was imported. I'm willing to have two folders: Original and Modified if necessary but I would like get away from the year folders.
Is that possible with iPhoto? If so how? If not, is there another application that offers that function?
    Thanks, Alan
G5 quad   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Broadband via Comcast

I have scanned in about 12,000 old photos into iPhoto. None of them has the correct date of the photo because the date given is the date I imported it. This does not concern me in the least. I do not mess with the internal file system of iPhoto outside the application.
I manage the photos first by creating multiple libraries by year, using iPhotoBuddy. You can also use iPhotoLibraryManager for this.
For example, I have now about 9 different iPhoto Libraries by years the photos were taken: 1920-1978; 1979-1985; etc with 2007 being the current one. Within each of these libraries, I have created albums with names like Family Photos 1977. Whenever I import the scanned photos for that year, I immediately drag them from the film roll to the album.
I have a film roll also labeled 1977, but sometimes I import the photos and then discover other photos from that same year that get scanned in later. They become film roll 235, but since I want them to be with the 1977 film roll, I drag them into my album first, and then drag them up to the 1977 film roll, where they are joined into it with the earlier-scanned photos.
If ther is a particular occasion that year that I want to find separately, I make another album, titled properly, like Bob's 4th birthday party, and drag the photos from the Family 77 album into that party album. The beauty of the album system is that a photo can be in multiple albums since those photos are aliases. You also can rearrange the order of the photos in the albums; something you cannot do in the fim rolls.
It is a fantastic system once you get used to it.
You don't have to worry about where the photo is, just find it in your album.
You can use the Keyword function to name the photos and when you need to find a particular photo, you can search by keyword.
If you do batch change the dates, you can do a search by dates as well.

  • Installing Epson Perfection scanner 4490 Photo

I have just received my new iMac, and I want to still use my Epson scanner 4490 Photo. I have installed the scanner software from Epson, but this Mac doesn't seem to recognize it. Are they not compatible? What can I do?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you try Software Update? I ask because according to Apple's Mac OS X v10.6: Printer and scanner software says it has a driver for 10.6.

  • OT: Scanner for production

I have an Epson 3170 Photo scanner that has been serving me well and currently has a mechanical problem that I may not be able to resolve. The scanning mechanism will not return back from the end of its scan and it makes a horrid noise whenever I turn it on.
Has anyone experience with this problem? Has anyone solved the issue?
Has anyone any particular recommendations for a new scanner. The Mac magazines last reviewed flatbed scanners that were not printer-scanner-coffee maker-fax machines-chauffeurs-golf caddies back in 2008 and I am concerned about the tendency of scanner makers to not support Apple's OS upgrades (most particularly Snow Leopard). Since Tiger was the 2008 Apple OS, I don't want to get burned the way HP did me when I needed to transition from Apple's System 9 to OS X. I also would like to get back to scanning directly into Photoshop and, with my Epson (their software requires Rosetta on Intel) I have not been able to do that since I upgraded my computer.
I have a Mac Pro Cheese Grater with dual quad-core Nehalem processors running at a leisurely 2.93 GHz with 8G of DDR3 1066MHz system RAM. I regularly scan everything from letters to photographs, I do web design, video editing, compositing, and photo retouching with my Mac.

I use a CanoScan CS4400-F (about $100) and it works great with Snow Leopard, and Windows Vista or 7 64 Bit.
I initially bought it for the ability to scan some 3200 slides and film negatives, but now that the project is finished, I use it for everyday scanning and the resolution is incredible.
I've had this scanner for 18 months and never heard any "funny" noises out of it except for the one time I carried it downstairs, and forgot to unlock the carriage before I started scanning again. I probably have about 10,000 scans with it so far.
It integrates with PS, PSElements, Acrobat 9, and Mac apps seamlessly.

Ingenico has a 1D Bluetooth barcode scanner certified MFi by Apple.
    http://baracoda.ingenico.com/Baracoda-i-fly.aspx
Baracoda i-Fly is compatible with Apple iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.
Baracoda i-Fly supports IAP Bluetooth profile and is MFi certified, which means it is 100% compatible with Apple development standards and performances.
Its Bluetooth connection is bidirectional, which enables the i-Fly to transmit data both ways in mode « No Data Loss »).
Furthermore, Firmware update is also possible, which is not the case for non-MFi certified devices.

I am trying to save memory on my iPhone 4S/ ios6.
    1) Can I back up all photos to icloud and the external hard disk I normally use for photos? If I then delete photos from the iPhone do the get deleted on iCloud?
    2) Can I back up the newsstand to iCloud and save memory on the iPhone?
    3) Can I back up the bookshelf to icloud and save memory on the iPhone?

    1. What format is the external drive? It sounds like it's ina format that Macs can't write to. Is it a NAS or NTFS?
    2. Easiest thing: just move your iPhoto Library to the external
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I received an Iphone 5 as a gift two days ago. The first thing I did was set up ICloud for photos. Itunes would not allow me to add songs to my new phone without restoring it, yet when I did this, it deleted all 129 photos of my graduation and friends from the past two days. And I cannot find them anywhere, photo stream, ICloud, nothing. Where can I get back my memories?

Were the photos taken by your new iPhone?  If so, did you not import them off your phone to your computer (as you would any other digital camera) before the restore?  If not, restoring wiped the data off the phone and your pictures are gone.
Sounds like a good time to (re)read the User Guide.

  • When I open Iphoto, I see all my photos for a second and then they disappear and only a white dotted box appears.  Then I click on it and for photos is a triangle with an exclamation point.  It doesn't happen to all but quite a lot. how to I get them back

Have you recently deleted photos using the finder or run clean up software?  Is so restore your backup
If not the backup your iPhoto Library and launch iPhoto while depressing the option and command keys. Rebuild your database

  • Why do I not have access to all the features of my Canon MG5320 printer in all applications which use a printer? The printer has two paper paths. The rear path is used for photo paper and other specialty papers. this is only one "unavailable".

I have an iMac late 2012 with OSX 10.8.
The MG5320 has two paper feed paths; one at the rear for photo paper, brochure paper, and other specialty papers and a tray for regular 8½x11 paper. It also can print on CDs and DVDs and has an automatic duplexer. Canon provides a utility for printing on the CDs and DVDs and also for printing photos and other specialty items. This is available in Mac format also. I installed the most recent drivers and utilities.
I also have a HP IBM Compatible computer on which the above printer as well as an Epson are installed. Every option of each printer is available in every software application that has need for a printer.
The Mac printer dialog varies from one application to another. The only applications that list the option for selecting paper quality which includes photo paper are Office for Mac, Pages, and Numbers. Not likely that I would be using any of these for photo printing. Auto duplexing, however, is not available here or in any other applications.
The print dialog in Aperture, Photoshop Elements for Mac, ACDSee for Mac, or iPhoto provide the choice of numerous sizes of paper but no option for paper quality. Therefore, I attempted to use the print utility supplied by Canon and updated by Apple for printing some photos. The photos are selected in this utility. When the print command was given I was shown a message that the printer was being reset. It then began printing a spreadsheet, which was not even open, from the front tray on regular paper in fast draft quality.
It is essential that the rear feed be available for printing photos. The printer will not accept photo paper from the front tray. The greater proportion of my printing is photos or other specialty items all of which use paper that must be fed from the rear feed.
An acquaintence who considers himself to be somewhat of a Mac expert insists that the printer options that I require are available and all I need to do is look for them. The print dialog should be clear enough that "looking for options" is not a necessity. Even so, I have dilligently searched every variation of the Mac print dialog on my iMac and only the office type applications named above included anything other than the basic printer functions.
I have also searched numerous locations online without finding a solution. I did, however, find that printing and printing problems seem to be common with several versions of the Mac OS and Mac computers in general.
I would appreciate it if someone could provide me with a solution. I have no desire to upgrade my Windows OS to Windows 8 which is perhaps suitable for "smart" phones but not desktop computers. However, because of the printing issue I have temporarily put my iMac aside and reverted to using my PC with Windows Vista.
    Help!!
