Scanner for PPC apps on Intel machine?

I just migrated from my PPC powerbook to a new Intel macbook. I have A TON of applications, many of which are still PPC versions that may now have universal versions. Is there an application that will scan my system and tell me which apps are PPC? I have VersionTracker Pro - but it doesn't have a function to quickly see this information. And, Activity Monitor only shows apps that are running...
Thanks!

HI Nova,
This could be a tad time consuming but after Googling for the type of utility you need (and came up with zip).. how about using the Mac color label system?
* Create new folders in your home folder or on your desktop and organize items into categories and subcategories. To color code items, select the item you want in a Finder window, then choose a Color Label from the File menu. You can customize color label names in Finder Preferences.
Go through your apps and do the Get Info routine to see whether PPC or Intel. Use a color code system for each. Say Aqua for PPC and Grey for Intel.
This is really good question!!!
If I come across anything related to your issue I'll post back.

  • Is it possible to install an app intended for PPC on an intel-based mac?

I have a "Websters" disk that works on Windows and PPC-based Macs.

  • Move pair of 1 TB HDs from G5 PPC to new INTEL Machine?

I have had a workhorse PPC G5 for many years, but software upgrades demand I graduate to an Intel-based machine. Can I simply move the two 1TB Hard Drives from the old machine to a new one or are they incompatible? They are both about a year old.

They are compatible, but the partitioning map or tables (Apple PM) are not and need to be reformatted to GUID is all.
Better in FW case until you copy files you need and reformat before using internally. With 4 internal bays, you'll still have one free.
And skip Applications during Setup (or Migration) Assistant step and you should be fine, and then do fresh installs and avoid having to redo later.

  • How do I remove migrated PPC apps from Intel iMac that has the same apps?

Before I begin, please know that I've read a lot of previous posts but all the posts only had some of what I needed so I'm posting this as a new topic. OK, here I go:
My PPC running 10.5 just froze-up (that has since been solved) but in the process of solving that issue, I migrated everything as a different user (User B) INCLUDING my applications, to my Intel iMac - my iMac that also had the same applications on it - except they were intel versions and they were under User A.
So I essentially did an archive and clean install on my PPC.
Then, using Migration Assistant, I transferred User B onto my PPC. Now both of my computers have duplicates of most of my applications. In trying to fix this issue, I found out I should NOT have transferred my applications. So now I'm very confused as to which apps I should remove off my PPC and which I should remove off my intel iMac.
If I just delete User B from my intel iMac, that's easy enough but will that remove the dupes? I have a funny feeling it doesn't.
And then, which do I remove from my PPC?
AND THEN, are there other things I will need to remove from different places on my computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
And now, I've used migration assistant to move everything from user (B) back to my PPC. Now I have duplicate applications with "(from old mac)"

Normally application go in the Applications folder at the top level of the hard drive, not in any user folders. If you have applications in user folders that are the same as those in the Applications folder, you can delete them from the user folders. If you actually migrated PPC applications into the Applications folder on an Intel Mac, it would have replaced the Intel versions. To fix that, you would have to reinstall OSX on the Intel Mac.
The same thing would apply on the PPC Mac.

  • PPC apps (on intel): slow startup, no keyboard input, Excel-Office crashes

    Hello,
It seems, that all apps that are using rosetta don't work properly.
    - The startup time is extremely long, some minutes, spinning wheel is visible
    - input via keyboard isn't possible
    - Office v. X (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) apps are crashing at startup
A test with the Calculator.app switched to open with rosetta showed also this symptoms (no keyboard input possible)
Curiously all this happens *only with my account*. So first I thought it is a problem of the preferences or fonts. But deletion or substitution from backup does not succeed. Also I did the tip sudo "update_prebinding -root / -force" but it didn't help.
I mad up a fresh account and compared all the files in the ~user/Library path, if there is a file missing in the brocken account. But didn't found some.
Is there anywhere a file outside the ~user/library path, which has user dependend informations (for rosetta)?
Many thanks in advance for any idea
    George

    Yeah, I've got it!
In /Library/Caches I found the following files and trashed them. Now all PowerPC application incl. Office v. X are working again. Huh!

Best regards and thanks to everybody who thoughts about a solution for my problem

  • Does 10.5 for ppc have java 6?

or is it the same java version that 10.4 uses?

No only 64 bit Intel Macs have Java 6/1.6.
1.5 is the latest for PPC & 32 bit Intel Macs.

  • Running ppc apps on the intel macbook?

i need to run a couple of PPC apps this weekend, how do you run PPC apps on the intel macbook? rosetta?

Rosetta is automatically run for PowerPC applications running Mac OS X on Intel Macs, and is relatively transparent (you won't know it is running). The only limitations though are that Rosetta is slower than PowerPC of equivalent processor, unless you max the RAM, and then it is only slightly slower, and applications dependent on PowerPC drivers won't run at all. If it is a Mac OS 9 application, you can't run that on a MacBook without a hack known as Sheepshaver. And being a hack, it is relatively unstable, and requires you obtain a Mac OS 9 compatible ROM file. The only way to legally obtain that is to already have a Mac OS 9 compatible machine, in which case, it would be better for you to run it on that machine in the first place. If you have a Mac OS 9 compatible machine, you can network it with Mac OS X using my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/network9X.html
If you have a PowerPC driver dependent Mac OS X software, find an equivalent title or update that is Intel native from my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html

  • Ok...so I can no longer use the ppc app that I loved for so long...but...

    Hi All:
I am finally at the point where I am finally accepting that I cannot use my favorite ppc app, MacMame. Since upgrading to Lion (with no Rosetta) I can no longer play my favorite arcade games which is fine.
In reading some online forums and blogs I found that if the developer of the program has a universal or intel version of the dmg that I can use this program on Lion again.
Does anyone know how I can convert this ppc version to Universal or Intel running app? Is there an App for that to convert?
Thanks for any help or advice on this.
    Paul
P.S. - I am not running a partition with SL just to use this program. It is not worth the time.

    Thanks Linc,
well that *****... I guess I am going to have to reach out to the developers. It does not look like they are doing this anytime soon cause the website is pretty old in itself.
Thanks for the info on this,
    Paul

  • Problem with Java app on Mac OS X... works fine in PPC, not on Intel

    Hi all,
I'm at a loss... I've always been under the impression that java is the same no matter where it's running, but I've come across something that surely counters that line of thought. At work, we use a java application from DTI to publish our newspaper. This app works just fine on Mac OS X 10.4.x on PPC Macs, but the same application doesn't work on Intel Macs, also 10.4.x.
The app launches and appears to be working fine, but there's a point where it must download some support files from the server. This is where it breaks with the error:
    java.io.IOException: null, com.dtint.macutils.AppFile.decode
The corresponding entries in the console log show this:

If there are any other logs I can provide, let me know what would be helpful and I'll get them.
I've got no clue why this wouldn't work across platforms unless it was compiled for the PPC processor or something, but then wouldn't it either launch in Rosetta or not at all on the Intel? I'm a systems admin, not a programmer, so I've really no idea where to start looking.
What I have done to this point is made sure I'm on the latest Apple-released Java, as well as copied the Java files from the PPC to the Intel to see if there was something there. Nothing makes any difference.
This would be a major coup if I could get this working... does anyone have any thoughts or ideas about getting this to work?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • A PPC Motion user tries out the Intel machines

    Hi Guys,
Ive been seriously thinking about the intel,octo,3.0 Ghz machne as an upgrade to my current config of two PPC G5-quad, 16 gigs of ram-X1900, bla, bla, bla.
Recently I had a chance to work on 2 of those Intel machines... extensively. After several days of beating those things to death and running M3 thru the ringers this is what i came up with.
    Stability:
I find that the PPC quad was far more stable than the intels running M3, In fact I found constant stalls,, crashes, and tons of little bugs depending on what your doing.
    Real time playback.
Realtime playback kicked *** until I through a few layers of text at them. One project had over 90 layers w/ behaviors and stuff. and that really killed it.. actually that would kill most.
The intel machines ran cooler, and when it came to compressing tons of content it was awesome!
However, After nearly two days of trouble shooting machines, crashes, command delays and that kind of thing I was forced to take my work home to work on the PPC machines which yield a more constant, far less frustrating effortless workflow. Quick example: What took me nearly six hours to try and complete, took 4 hours delivered to client. because of the stability.
So, as bad as I want a few new Octo's stuffed with everything you can put in the thing... I think Im gonna wait for the next round of desktops. Maybe by then the marriage of software and hardware will actually meet somewhere in the middle for a less frustrating experience.

If it works......it works! There's no need to do spending where not necessary... I wish somebody told me that when I was attending art school... -_-

  • Does FCP HD 4.5 work on Leopard? also, is it UB for Intel machines?

I have FCP HD 4.5 on my PPC G5 running 10.4.10
but is this version compatible with Leopard?
also, I'm thinking of buying a macbook pro
is v4.5 a universal binary compatible on the new intel machines as well?
or will it at least function well in rosetta?

    Honestly...
If you were going to be keeping 4.5 - I'd just dedicate this machine for editing and buy a nice new mac for your fun office work.
FC 4.5 is NOT UB and will run in rosetta... but function well?? Hard to tell...

  • Building InDesign CS4 plug-ins once for both MAC PPC and MAC Intel

    Hi All,
I would like to know if there is a possibility to build the indesign plugins once for both PPC and Intel on MAC. Right now I'm forced to build my plugins twice: on the PPC machine and on the Intel Machine.
I tried to build the SDK example Basic Persist Interface on my MAC Intel machine and then i placed it on my MAC PPC and it failed to load.
is there any configuration I need to specify so the XCode linker will link for both machines?
    I'm using:
    InDesign CS4
    Leopard 10.5.8
    XCode 3.0
    Architectures: i386
    Valid Architectures: ppc67 ppc7400 ppc 970 i386 x86_64 ppc

No, 10.5 still supports PPC.  10.6 supports Intel only.

  • How do I restore the settings for apps using Time Machine?

I believe there are problems with items within the Library Folder inside the System Folder.  For example, there are two "Frameworks" Folders, but one has "(from old Mac)" after its name.  I dare not try to remove or even move either.
Back in the day of OS 9, you could modify something, then search for it by "Last Modified" Date, and find where Apple has hidden itscontents.  It's not so easy in OS X.  I've had some success using Pondini's Time Machine FAQ's, though.  Here is how I got to this problem:
Our family MacBook died.  After getting a repair estimate of $500 to $700 "if it's the Logic Board," we decided to replace it.  We purchased a MacBook Pro running Lion.  (Later, we brought it to an Apple Store and were quoted $435 in house or $280, but they would have to send it out.  Incredible repair: Logic Board, Top & Bottom Case, Super Drive, Battery, all for $280.  No wonder they're #1).  I pulled the Hard Dive out, erased it, and installed an older operating system, but during the repair they installed 10.6.
Restored the MBP from the TM backup of the MacBook. OK
The Macbook is repaired and the store showed me how to restore the data from the TM backup.
Restart and the passwords do not work due to restoring a 10.6 machine from a 10.7 backup.
Tech support guides me through resetting an admin password using the password utility on the install DVD.
changed the other passwords inside of Accounts in System Preferences.  Then changed the password or the other Admin.
Restart, get a circle with a line through it.
Tech support guides me through fixing this.
Restart, half my Apps do not work.
Tech support says to re-install 10.6.
I did but I thought it would erase and install but it just re-installed 10.6.
Most Apps work, except iPhoto.  Mail is OK sending but only receives on one of 3 accounts.
Is there a fix for iPhoto & Mail?  If not, I would plan to erase and use the finder to drag the user folders from TM to the MacBook.  Can I just drag the Apps too?  How about all of the settings for those Apps?

If you don't keep a backup, you can't restore your machine to any state except the state in which you received it, brand new, with none of your own stuff on it. That makes a pretty convincing argument for backing up, doesn't it?

  • NetInstall dosen't work for intel machines

When booting the machines in my lab while holding down the OPTION key, only the G5 and earlier machines are giving me the icon for NetInstall. NetInstall works great on the G5 and earlier, but dosen't work at all on any intel machine I've tried. The image is marked as "Universal" in Server Manager, and is an image from an intel MacBook.
    Leopard Server 10.5.1
I have 20 new iMac's in route. I really need NetInstall to work for them. Any help would be appreciated.

You say that your NetInstall was taken from an Intel MacBook. Was its OS Leopard? If it is Leopard then you do have a bizarre problem on your hands as it is Universal. Tiger client, on the other hand, is not Universal.
How new are the target clients? Could they have been shipped with a build of Leopard newer than the one you've based this NetInstall on?
