Scanner on USB 1

Just a quickie,
I'm looking at using a USB powered scanner with my eMac which only has USB 1 and I'm just wanting to be sure it will work. I understand it will be significantly slower than USB 2 but I don't mind that for now as I intend to get a new mac later in the year.
Am I right in believing that the scanner will still work over USB 1 but will just be slower? The scanner I'm looking at is a CanoScan LiDE 70.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

This may or may not directly relate to the LiDE 70, but I can warn firsthand from a Canon MP160 that if you install the Canon software from CD, it will ask you for an administrative password and tell you to restart after installing; before restarting, open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions on the hard drive. The Canon installer mis-set permissions on /System/Library and /Library, which is not a good thing. Repair Permissions before restarting, and it should work quite well on a USB 1.1 model Mac. (If you forget and restart without repairing permissions and the computer hangs on startup, Start Up in Safe Mode --- which can take upwards of 20 minutes to finish --- and then repair permissions.)

HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Version 3.2.1 does not work on iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007. Only recognizes scanner not USB printer.
I would like to print via the USB connection instead of wireless (the wireless does work, and the scanner works via USB).
I tried connecting the printer directly (via USB) to my MacBook Pro laptop and it worked just fine.
How can I make this printer work on my iMac?
I spent 4 hours on the phone with HP and we did every combination of installation of drivers ad nausum and their bottom line is that it is a Mac problem.
Any help would be appreciated. Will be sending this printer back to Amazon if I can't make it work on the USB.
I am open to questions or suggestions
    Thanks,

After 4 hours on the phone with HP and another hour with Apple (Mavericks support) no real solution other than check everything (removed everything from Login Items, removed all HP software anywhere in the system reboot, reinstall printer) then when nothing worked for the 4500, did an OS Reinstall (boot with CMD+R).
The Mavericks support group did open an incident (# 542875311) and I will update it when I figure out how to find it on the system.
My feel is that the base problem is that somewhere between the HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.49-2 package and the Apple HP Printer software in the Library (version 2.16.1) the app for printing via the USP Port just does not get installed for the mid 2007 20 inch iMac. The scanner is recognized on the USB Port and the Printer works fine on Wi-Fi. I have too many devices to burden my home network with anothe device. Also, every time I put any HP Printer on Wi-Fi, my router (Netgear N600 WNDR3400 running 12 to 20 devices depending on who is home) gets wonky (but that's anothe story...).
Additionally, when I attach the HP Envy 4500 to my MacBook Pro (2010) it works perfect - print and scan via the USB prot and both functions show in the System Preferences - Printers and Scanners just as expected and just as the 3050 does.

  • Connecting HP PSC 2355 All-in-One printer/scanner using USB cord

I have a Time Capsule that I use to back up both my Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro and would like to connect my HP PSC 2355 All-in-One Printer/Scanner to the network using USB cord and plugging it into the back of my TIme Capsule. I tried this once, but was unable to find the Printer. I would like to set it up so I could use both the Printer and the Scanner from either my MacMini or my MacBook Pro. It would be really cool if I could figure out a way to use Back to My Mac to print when I am away from home and using my MacBook Pro at a WiFi Hotspot. Is this possible? How can I do it? Suggestions? Thank you!

+would it be possible to split the USB cord coming from the Printer+
I'm afraid not. The connection must be direct to either the TC or your computer, but not both at the same time.
Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide will guide you through the process of setting up the printer. Unfortunately, Apple does not offer a printer compatibility list, so the only way to really know if your device is compatible is to try to see if it can be configured.
Perhaps HP would could help in this regard.

  • Touchsmart TX-2 fingerprint scanner and USB ports not working

    Hi everyone,
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong spot.
Just sent my laptop (Touchsmart TX-2 1015au) off for a warranty fix - told them the USB ports weren't working on Windows 7, 64 bit. It came back wiped, running on Vista 32 bit and.....with the USB ports not working.
I figured I'd try to get it working because I need my laptop for uni and can't send it back right now. So I clean installed Windows 7, 64 bit again and its still not working. Did the standard open device manager and uninstall everything under the usb tab. All that has resulted in is causing the fingerprint scanner to stop working (being told that it is not connected) and still no working USB ports.
All advice really welcome and very much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

    Hi:
Should be no problem to get W7 32 bit to work on that model.
Just use all of the drivers and software from the HP Probook 450 G0 on your model except the Audio, BIOS and firmware files.
Your model uses the Intel HD graphics driver only.
The first driver you have to install is the Intel chipset installation utility and then reboot.

If for some reason, the Intel HD graphics driver from that model does not work, then use this one...

  • TimeCapsule and scanner over USB port

I have successfully installed my Epson multifunction printer/scanner/fax via the USB port on my TimeCapsule with regards to printing. But my Mac is not discovering the scanner via the USB port ?
Anyone has an idea/solution to this ??
The scanner works OK when connected directly to the USD port of the Mac, so scanner SW and HW er OK

    Welcome to the discussions!
Apple will allow printing from compatible devices attached to the USB port on the Time Capsule, but advanced features like scanning, faxing, copying and maintenance are not supported.
When you need one of these functions, you will need to connect your Epson directly to your computer.

  • Scanner on usb port?

I have an HP network printer connected to the ethernet port of an express router.  I'm trying to add an Epson Scanner (Model GT-1500) to the USB port of the express router.  Is it possible to do so?  Also, the express router is configured so that joins my existing network.  My principal router is an extreme base station.

Eject the drive from the AirPort Extreme
Plug it directly into your Mac
Click slowly on the drive until the name area changes to allow an edit
Change the name of the drive
    Eject it from the Mac
    Power down the AirPort Extreme
Plug the drive into the Extreme
Power up the Extreme, then power up the drive.

  • Scanner through USB Time Capsule

Is there any way to add a scanner to the USB port of the time capsule to make a "network scanner"?

Unfortunately, the Time Capsule USB port will only support printing from compatible devices and/or a hard drive.
Advanced features from All-in-One type devices like scan, copy, mainentance, etc are not supported. The All-in-One or separate scanner will need to be connected directly to the USB port on a computer.

  • Scanner-connection USB

Ran HP doctor it ran, scanner whirrred and purred, dectected no problems. Attempted scan agian- same error message.

Hello @archyp2 , and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand you're having scanner connectivity issues.  I would love to try and help!
I would suggest disconnecting the USB cable, and Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once it is uninstalled, I would suggest putting your system into clean boot mode within the Microsoft configuration.  You can do so by following this document: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Once the computer is in clean boot mode, I would suggest reinstalling the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows.
Make sure not to connect the USB cable until prompted.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Connecting a scanner with USB Hub

Configuration: Scanner (Epson 7000 GT), printer (Canon 6200 S) are connected to a USB-Hub. The Hub ist connected to one of my macs (mini with 1,25 GHz oder G4 with DP 867 GHz).
When I don't use a hub there are no problems.
Scanning with the mini through the hub does work, when the hub is connected to the rear USB-port. Connecting to the hub through the keybord-hub (hub to hub), preview-scanning works. But doing the real scan fails. Only a twinkling status bar comes up and stays.
Using the G4 and the hub, Image Capture does not even find the scanner, no matter, which USB-port I use. But the scanner can be found in the System Informations.
With Gentoo-Linux on the G4, scanning and printing work perfectly. No matter, if I use a hub or not, so it is NOT a hardware issue!
Anyone who has the same problems?

If I waa you, I'd do a research on USB 3 scanners - here is some interesting info:

  • USB scanner permissions

    Okay, I'm totally confused.
I have a Canon Lide-30 USB scanner which I have used under Arch Linux many times--but not for 2 or 3 months. However, I was never able to configure hotplug to set the permissions automatically; I always had to become root and manually set the permissions in order to access the scanner as a regular user. Now, of course, the devices are all different (I mostly keep up with the latest release, don't really use testing packages, so I now have kernel 2.6.14).
    Here's what's happening:
I plugged in the scanner's USB cable after booting (my machine's been up continuously for a few days, so I would have to shut down to do otherwise).
Loaded the uhci-hcd module ... now /proc/bus/usb is mounted, and it contains a node for my scanner.
    Run sane-find-scanner as root:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x220e [CanoScan], chip=LM9832/3) at libusb:001:002
Run sane-find-scanner as myself: same as above
    Run xsane as root: OK.
Run xsane as myself: No devices found.
    # chmod 777 /dev/usbdev1.2 (which I think represents the scanner)
    # chmod 777 /dev/usbdev1.1
    # chmod 777 /proc/bus/usb/001/002
    # chmod 777 /proc/bus/usb/001/001
No change. I still can't access the scanner as myself.
By the way, it appears that the hotplug daemon won't start, though I'm not quite sure why. There are no files in /var/log/hotplug. In /var/log/errors, I see
DEVPATH is not set (subsystem pci)
But according to a brief Google search, this is not a serious problem.
    So what's the magic formula?

    Have you read this?

  • USB redirection with Canon scanner -- driver must be reinstalled

I am trying to get a Canon DR-M140 scanner to work through Remote Desktop USB Redirection.
When connecting the scanner through USB Redirection to a Windows Server 2012 R2 remote desktop session, the scanner device appears in the remote session's device list, but the TWAIN driver does not load. The scanner appears as an "unknown" device
and the properties dilalog shows "Device status: Reinstall the drivers for this device. (Code 18)" However, reinstalling the drivers has no effect.
    Repro steps:
    - Windows Server 2012 R2 server
    - Windows 8.1 Pro client
    - M140DRIT_V12SP1 driver package installed on both server and client
    - RemoteFX USB Redirection group policy enabled on client
    - CANON DR-M140 checked in mstsc devices tab
    - Connect to server
    - Open Devices and Printers
    - CANON DR-M140 appears in Unspecified section
    - Double-clicking for properties and clicking Hardware tab shows "Device status: Reinstall the drivers for that device. (Code 18)"
Does anyone have specific or general advice on getting this to work?
    Thanks,
    Walter

First, I would like to confirm the following questions:
    1. Is there an exclamation mark or question mark in Device Manager after plugging the scanner? If so, please let me know.
    2. Which software is used on the machine to scan file, the built-in application or Canon software? When trying to use the application to scan, is there any error information?
At this stage, please download the Canon software and install it for a test.
    Canon Scanner software
Then, please use the Canon application to scan file again.
If there is any error message, please upload it for research. Meanwhile, please access the following folder and upload the setupapi.dev.log file.

    Hope this helps.

  • Using usb scanner DSmobile 620

I would like to utilize a Brother DSmobile 620 document scanner in Xfce 4.10. To that end, I downloaded the manufacturer's drivers as rpm, extracted via rpmextract.sh and copied the driver files to the respective root directories (etc, lib, usr). Thereafter, I installed sane 1.0.24. Upon plugging in the scanner, it is not recognized by sane.

Any suggestions on getting this usb scanner to work?

    Hi,
I want to use sane on solaris 9 with a fujitsu ScanPartner 620C.
I've already installed sane and changed /kernel/drv/sgen.conf. When I run sane-find-scanner, the following appears:
found SCSI scanner "FCPA ScanPartner 620C 2.02" at /dev/scsi/scanner/c1t4d0
    # Your SCSI scanner was detected. It may or may not be supported by SANE. Try
    # scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
    # No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
    # you have loaded a driver for your USB host controller and have installed a
    # kernel scanner module.
    # Not checking for parallel port scanners.
    # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
    # can't be detected by this program.
but when I run scanimage -L, the following error occurs:
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
May you help-me with this problem?

  • Usb scanner with root permissions only

    Hello
When I open xsane with regular a user, the scanner does not get detected by it. Only when I open xsane as root.
That's probably a permission issue. My user is added to the scanner group.
    How would I correct this?
    Thanks

    brebs wrote:
Write a udev rule to identify the scanner and give it the right user group & permissions. Google search is your friend
Just to confuse the hell out of us, different distros use different group names. Some have "scanner", some use "usb", some don't even have "usb".
    Example:  In /etc/udev/rules.d/91-local.rules
    # Scanner.
    # sane-find-scanner ; scanimage -L
    # From http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-33 … ml#3311185
    # udevadm info -a --name /dev/usbdev5.3_ep00
    # "libusb:003:015" probably means /dev/bus/usb/003/015
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{product}=="CanoScan", GROUP="usb", MODE="0660", SYMLINK+="lide25"
I googled it quite a bit to find out this process is rather difficult for newbies. I even read udev wiki but I can't come up with a rule myself. The gentoo forum post you referenced has udevinfo command while it has been replaced with udevadm and the script wouldn't work.
Would you give me more directions?
Here's the output of sane-find-scanner as root.
