Scanner/Photoshop conflict

I have an apparent conflict with my scanner and Photoshop.  Am running Windows Vista 64 bit.  Scanner is a Canoscan 9950F.  In order to scan a pdf using the software utility that came with it, the scanner uses a 64 bit TWAIN driver.  Photoshop CS4 requires WIA interface driver.  When I install it, the Canon software cannot recognize the scanner (although both the TWAIN and WIA drivers are installed). If I only install TWAIN, I can use it but then can't scan into Photoshop directly.
Is there a solution, or can someone tell me where this conversation should be taking place: i.e., with Canon Tech support, Adobe Tech support, Windows Tech support,
Many thanks,
doug

You can use the 32 bit version of CS4 to scan into.
I just use my scanning software, adjust in that, then save into my pictures or whatever folder. Then open in CS4 64 bit or bridge.
Least with my software scanning package I can do a whole heck of a lot more adjustments before I actually save a scan then what can be done in photoshop CS4.
Photoshop does not support for twain for any 64 bit OS. This is off Adobes website.

  • Photoshop CS4 - TWAIN driver for my Epson Perfection 3200 scanner

I have been attempting to find, download and install a version of the TWAIN driver for the Epson Perfection 3200 Photo scanner.  I need a version that will work with the Mac OSX 10.6.7 operatinging system and Adobe Photoshop CS4.  I have already exhausted all efforts to get an appropriate driver from Epson and they suggested I see if Adobe didn't have one that would install into the Import/Export folder of CS4.  Can you help?

forget twain and scanning through Photoshop (keep working in Photoshop while you scan by scanning in the manufacturer's scanning app, or try VUESCAN free scanning software)
note that Ps runs in 64 bit by default and many scanner plugins conflict because they are 32bit and buggy so if your scanner pluging is 32 bit, you need to run Ps in 32 bit if you want to the TWAIN door (again, not recommended, and it's been discussed here many times, probably why your post hit air)

  • Photoshop elements 13 doesn't recognize my Epson scanner

I have a Epson Workfoce 545 wireless printer/fax/scanner and newly installed Elements 13 doesn't recognize the scanner.  Do any of you in this community have a suggestion?

The scanner is NOT present in the network.  The "all in one printer" that the scanner is a part of  is listed, however.

  • I just upgraded to Mavericks and can't use my Epson Scanner

Everytime I try to import with my Epson V600 scanner Photoshop just crashes.   Anyone have this happen and find a solve?

Thanks for the help, part of it was that I was  using CS3 and that's a big problem with Mavericks.   Instead of spending hours working around it I bit the bullet and signed up for the photoshop cc service.  A bit steep but it's solved several problems.  I do have to say that I really like some of the new features so I'm not as annoyed by Adobe's blackmail as I could be.

  • "Scanner not installed" problem

I'm using a G-5, running 10.4.11 I use an Epson Expression 1600 scanner in Photoshop (CS3). The last time I used it, as the image finished scanning and appeared on the screen, the computer crashed. (Kernal panic). Since then, I've been unable to use the scanner. In Photoshop, File>Import>Epson Expression 1600, the Epson software launches, but I'm then told there is no scanner installed. I've downloaded and reinstalled the Epson scanner driver, installed a new USB hub, (and also plugged the USB scanner cable directly into the Mac), unplugged and plugged in the scanner. No luck. System Profile shows the scanner (or maybe it's just the driver it's detecting.)
I don't know if the problem is in the scanner, Photoshop, or Tiger. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. If I can't solve it soon, I'm going to need to buy a new scanner.

  • Latest Leopard Security Update Kills Photoshop 7?

Yesterday installed the latest security update on iBook G4. Today Photoshop 7.0 won't open, giving an error message that reads, +An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred because of a program error. Photoshop will now exit+.
Coincidence? It never happened before the update installation. Reinstalled Photoshop...same result. Any ideas anyone? TIA

Apparently, there is a fundamental Leopard/Photoshop conflict, up to and including Photoshop CS2. Here's a thread at Adobe's site:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/[email protected]@
This is not a happy situation, and had I known, I would not have gone to Leopard. A message on the above thread indicates Adobe is aware of the problem, but no fixes are imminent.

  • OX10.6 scanners and photoshop

Hello - I've just upgraded form 10.5 to 10.6 and I'm now having problems with photoshop - specifically importing from scanner. Photoshop keeps quitting as the scanner is preparing to preview. The scanner is a Canon Pixma MP610. Is the problem with the scanner , photoshop CS (version 8.0) and what can I do to sort anything out? All was fine and dandy before installing 10.6....
I'm techno illiterate - which is why I have a mac in the first place.... so if solutions can be made for the hard of thinking it would be much appreciated. Thanks

I suggest you launch Image Capture, and then use it to scan. After you scan something using Image Capture, save the file, then open the file in Photoshop. While CS1 is not supported, it will run--I have used it occasionally, although briefly, in Snow Leopard.
You might also consider buying Adobe Elements 8, which works just fine in Snow Leopard, and is far far cheaper than upgrading from CS1 to CS4.

  • How can I determine wasted HD file useage, HD full, Image Capture Manual?

I am a switcher. I have started using an SLR camera. I tried using imovie and iDVD and failed but now have more file room tied up. I deleted all but an DVD movie from stills and digital cam quicktime movies. I do not have a Handycam typecamera yet, but that is why I bought Iphoto 6. Have young grandchildren.
Big problem. Error came up that my hd was dangerously full . I began deleting unused programs I can add later.
I have a G5 with 160HD internal and an external LaCie which I have been using for .Backup. Having trouble reseting the timing on how frequently .Backup does its thing. So basically end up turning it off every few minutes.
Now...I am trying to learn more detailed use of Image Capture and the Apple bundled Graphic Converter. I do not see any pdf manual anywhere for these.
    1. Can anyone direct me to manuals on these so I can stop duplicating all my files.
    2. How can I see where my big file hogs are , especially duplicate files or even applications. I have PHotoshop CS2 in my computer (highest order of files) and in Applications in Rheta( my Home folder). If I delete it from the RhetaComputer level will it also disappear from my Applications?
I have recently upgraded to Tiger using the method where it leaves a copy of the previous system to find internet settings etc. I still had to delete and reinstall most applications, printer, scanner, Photoshop etc. afte Apple tech told me insisted I didn't need a clean install. Is this hogging space?
    3. I found a book in the Missing Manual series on Apple Scripts. Which finds duplicate files, etc. It looked like a great way to keep organized. But it will have a learning curve. Would you recommend I get it.
    4. I would like any suggestions on how to set up my computer (add a bigger internal drive), add a similar sized external hard drive for all old IPHOTO and Photoshop files, add a 300 gigabyte or so external hard drive for image storeage. and keep using .Mac Backup, or switch to a third party like ? easy to use for someone who doesn't know Unix or Apple script yet.
5.Take computer in to CompUSA or a local Apple consultant and sales store, in San Diego, it is Cry Wolf Consulting, buy the hard drives, have them set up the backup and routine maintenance.
    6. I had a tech offer to spend 4-5 hours at $100 an hour to help me. I cannot afford. Want to get this fixed before crashes.
Please refer me to any Apple articles on full hard drives, using Image Capture to burn VCDs for non Apple users.
I have books, but when sitting here, overwhelmed. Any help or refer to other postings appreciated. thanks. Drowning in full desktoppp clutter, dulicate files, no way to separate my originals from my edits. I have CD and DVD burned originals, but how do you keep them in IPHOTO or Photoshop file name system. A good reference here . I have struggled with iphoto vs Photoshop since switching.

How can I see where my big file hogs are , especially duplicate files or even applications. I have PHotoshop CS2 in my computer (highest order of files) and in Applications in Rheta( my Home folder). If I delete it from the RhetaComputer level will it also disappear from my Applications?
You can use WhatSize to find where the space on your hard disk is being used. If an item is present in both the Applications folder on your hard disk and the folder in your home folder, you can delete one of the copies without deleting the other one.

  • Copy Feature Not Available

I'm following directions I found on line to create a digital signature.
    1) I've scanned the signature and cropped, and saved as a new file (.PDF).
    2) Next step is to use Magic Wand tool to click in white area around signature, then select INVERSE from the SELECT menu. Done with no problem.
    3) Next step is to choose COPY, then FILE > NEW > IMAGE FROM CLIPBOARD and save this file as a .PNG.
Problem: Can't complete step 3. The copy feature isn't available to me. It's faint gray and nothing I've done will allow me to use that feature. Any suggestions?

Okay, I've made a step-by-step screenshot guide in Photoshop (not elements) for your situation, considering you mentioned you're totally new to this. This is not exactly the same as the 'book' you're following but it's an easy way to make a digital copy of your signature.
Once you've saved your signature from scanner, Photoshop > File > Open, choose your file and open it. If you're opening your signature file directly, you may or may not see the 'Background' layer highlighted above. The thing here is that if you see a background layer + Layer 1 (as seen above), double click on 'Background' layer, hit OK once. Hit delete with 'Background' layer selected. This will get rid of that layer, leaving only the signature layer. In some cases, when you open your signature scan image if you only see 'Background', it means your signature data actually lies within that layer. In that case, just double click and hit OK. Don't delete. We'll just unlock the layer by doing so.
Once layer is unlocked, you can process your image.
First click on the 'Magic Wand' tool on the left (highlighted above). Then, single left click on any white portion of your image. Notice here that the 'Background' layer is deleted as I didn't want that layer since I had to make this signature transparent. Note that this will not select 'ALL' white areas if they're not contiguous. Proceed to next step.
After you single click as shown in previous step, right click on the white area again, select 'Similar' from the context menu. This will select all white areas in the image that we want to make transparent.
Now, all the white areas would've been selected after the previous step. You can now press 'Delete' on your keyboard to delete them and be left with just the signature on a transparent background as shown above.
Now, we're ready to save. File > Save As as shown above.
Choose filename and select format as 'PNG' as shown above. Click 'Save'.
You'll be shown a PNG Options dialog box. Leave the settings default and hit OK.
That's it! Your signature would be saved as a PNG file (with transparency) to the location you chose to save it in.
    Trust this helps!

  • Canoscan 8400F broken after 10.5.3 update - fix?

After installing the 10.5.3 update, my Canoscan 8400F no longer works. It had previously been working fine with Leopard. I get a "necessary file could be damaged or missing... reinstall driver" error from any software trying to access the scanner (Photoshop, Image Capture, Canoscan Toolbox, etc.) I reinstalled the most recent 10.2.4 driver and verified that it is there in [boot disk]/Library/Image Capture/Twain Resources. Any ideas?

Yes, You should have a previous system folder after an archive and install.
Can you backup everything to a second HD? Or, were you running Time Machine (a good idea). If you can, then you can safely delete many things from the previous system folder. Or, at least enough to begin testing to see if your apps work.
I routinely do and A&I when I upgrade. Then I test all my apps (or at least the important ones and a sample of the lesser ones). I move the previous system folder to a spare disk and keep it around for a few weeks incase I need to copy something over (like fonts).
BTW, I suspect your start up disk is out of space, not memory. Again backing stuff up, particularly on a laptop is a very sound idea and also allows you to manage your stuff better -- older stuff goes on the backup. Despite some problems, Time Machine works well for this as do a number of commercial products.

  • PS display of duotones. is it accurate?

PS CS6. I'm setting up many B&W photos as PMS cool gray 9 duotones using PS supplied Cool Gray 9 bl 1 curves. When I convert from grayscale there is a noticeable decrease in contrast, mostly light tones darkening. Am I seeing what I'm going to get or is the PS duotone display not quite accurate?
My monitor is calibrated and displays color accurately.
    Thanks

I have also found that personal taste and image content are better served when the predefined curves provided in Photoshop are modified.
For what it's worth, this is a copy of a Tech Sheet I wrote for my students some time back.
(The gray scale ring is provided as a hint to each channel’s tone curve.)
    1. B&W rendition.  2. Final Duotone
    Duotones for Press
Duotone is a technique that has been applied by letterpress printers and offset lithographers for more than a century and still flourishes today. It is made on press by printing – one over the other – two halftone images of the same original art. So much for absolutes: other characteristics associated with the duotone are present “usually.”
    * Usually the original art is monochromatic (a black & white photograph, for example)
    * Usually both halftones have the same screen fineness (150 lpi, for example) but that is not a must
    * Usually a conventional dot screen is used, but a times a special screen replaces one or both halftone screens to produce a mezzotint or similar pattern.
    * Usually the tonal scale of each halftone is different, but that depends on the effect desired.
    * Usually each halftone in the pair is printed in a different color, but that, too, depends on the effect desired.
    * Usually at least one of the ink colors is black, but it is not mandatory.
It becomes readily apparent that there is no such thing as a duotone but rather an almost infinite variety of duotone renderings.  They are more budget-friendly than four-color printing. In addition, because of the limited density of a single layer of ink, this added ink layer often produces a more aesthetically pleasing result than a single color reproduction. When reproducing black & white photographs this enables the lithographer – using either two blacks or a black and a gray – to more closely approximate the density range and contrast of the original print.
The traditional graphic arts camera and halftone screen used for creating duotones are rarely seen these days. They have been replaced by the scanner, Photoshop, and the imagesetter or platesetter.
Photoshop, working with RGB pixels, attempts to approximate the duotone effect and, with a few additional commands, prepare a file with channels containing the tonal range of what will become each printing plate’s image. Moreover, Photoshop offers pre-made duotone options that may be applied to your images. Best of all, Photoshop provides the tools for you to make your own duotones from scratch.
Ink Color Designation: The Pantone Matching System
It is customary when working with duotones to specify ink colors in terms of their Pantone Matching System (PMS) numbers. PMS printed swatch books are readily available. In addition, you may see and designate PMS colors within Photoshop. To choose a color, double click on the foreground color in the Tools panel and from the menu presented, click on Color Libraries. In the Book field choose Pantone Solid Coated.
If you know the PMS number for the color you intend to use, rapidly type that number even though there is no field to enter it in. The color, surrounded by a black border, will be highlighted in the strip of colors at the left. Click on Picker and you will be returned to your normal Color Picker array of colors. Click OK and the designated PMS color will appear in the Foreground Color box.
The system also works in reverse. With your chosen color appearing as the Foreground Color, double click on the swatch and when the Color Picker appears, click on Color Libraries. With the Book field set to Pantone Solid Color, the Pantone swatch will be highlighted along with and its PMS number.
    The following covers:
How to apply Photoshop pre-made duotone versions.
How to create your own duotone.
How to prepare the Photoshop file for commercial printing.
How to apply Photoshop pre-made duotone versions
      1. Convert the image to Grayscale via Image > Mode > Grayscale. You will notice that Duotone is grayed out – not accessible. Once the image is in Grayscale, it will become available.
      2. Choose Duotone via Image > Mode > Duotone.
      3. In the Type field, choose Duotone. In the Preset field at the top of Duotone Options, click the double arrow and from its drop down menu choose a PMS color from those offered. You may find more than one option for the same PMS designation. That indicates you have a choice in how prominent you want the color to be in the duotone. Go to the top of the list and view all the versions of PMS 144, for example, by clicking on each in turn.
      4. You may also alter the tonal curve of a color by clicking on the curve symbol adjacent to one of the colors and bending the curve to change the prominence of the color in the image.
5, Click OK. You will notice that the duotone appears as a single channel in the Channels panel.
Note:  The duotone, placed as a layer on an RGB image, is converted to RGB.
How to create your own duotone.
Often, the PMS color or colors you would like to use for a duotone do not appear in the premade duotone list of the Preset field. If so:
    1. Choose one of the duotone styles from the list, as described above.
    2. Click on the color swatch adjacent to Ink 1 or Ink 2.
    3. When the Color Libraries menu appears, key in its PMS number.
    4. You may also alter the tonal curve of a color by clicking on the curve symbol adjacent to one of the colors and bend the curve to change the prominence of the color in the image.
5, Click OK. You will notice that the duotone appears as a single channel in the Channels panel.
How to prepare the Photoshop file for commercial printing.
The Channels panel currently shows the duotone in a single channel. The next steps, made by you or your lithographer, will separate the colors. If you prefer to have the lithographer do the job, save the file in Photoshop (psd) format.
    Otherwise:
    1. Image > Mode > Multichannel (Note the two channels in the Channel panel.)
    2. File > Save as…  In the Format field choose Photoshop DCS 2.0
A reminder: File resolution in the printing size of the image should be one-and-a-half to two times the intended halftone screen fineness.

  • Photoshop CS4, won't recognize new scanner

Hi all.  I have a new Dell Windows Vista 64 and have CS4, legit on it.  I have installed the Vista 64 driver on this epson 4490 photo scannner.  That all went well.  The computer recognizes it, I can click on the icon on the desk top and bring up the epson full software to scan.  But when I'm in Photoshop, and click import, I don't see the epson 4490 listed, like I use to on my old computer with CS2 and I could open it with the full software in PS.  I can click on the WIA supported items and it will be there, but it is only an abreviated version of the epson software.  I can't make it be the full version that I bring up from the desktop icon. I've restarted the computer a couple of times after installing the software.
I can work with it this way, but much easier to bring it up from PS of course.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks everyone.

Hey, so when in Photoshop, like I mentioned earlier, I can access an abbreviated version of the Epson software, and I can get it to open up on PS.  It just isn't the full version and I can't do adjustments.  It simply scans it, not much control.
I adjusted the title to this question to clarify.
    Thanks again.
    edit:
Just found this in another thread for Mac's.  It says it is better to scan as a stand alone, not from within Photohshop since there have been conflicts and bad things with drivers.  Even thought I have a different scanner than the one mentioned.  This may be the answer.  It defaults to not working within PS.  Any thoughts?

    Ah...I see now.

  • Photoshop CS2 keeps losing scanner

Users using photoshop keep getting an error saying the scanner is not installed, it usually happens after they scan an image and then go back to scan something else. Doesn't seem to occur if they are using the Epson Scan application rather than Photoshop>File>Import.
I resolve the prob by quiting Photoshop and deleting the Epson Scan prefs in the users library, but this is getting rather tedious.
    Any ideas??

Is classic on? There is a conflict with classic mode and photoshop scanning. See if that is the problem.

  • Photoshop CS2 crashes when importing with Mustek A3 scanner

First off, yes, I know I have an old version of Photoshop. When I got my new Macbook a year or 2 ago I was only able to scan via TWAIN using Photoshop CS2, and it has been the best way.
However, lately the scanning has been buggy. I've had no problems using PS as a whole, but sometimes when I got to Import < ScanExpress A3 USB 1200 Pro it'll scan halfway and crash, or the program will just outright crash. Today I've spent about 2 hours just trying to scan one image. It managed to work once, and now it crashes every time I try scanning.
These are the specs of what I'm using:
    Mac OSX 10.6.7
    Photoshop CS2
    Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB Pro
Any help is appreciated. I need to use this scanner daily for work - If I can't get these images scanned then I don't get paid!

Perhaps a full uninstall will help. here is the link to the OSX uninstaller and drivers.
    http://www.mustek.com/mustek/supportdrivers.php?&show=drivers&disp_cat=Scanner&disp_sr=USB %20Port&disp_mod=ScanExpress%20A3%20USB%201200%20Pro&disp_catid=18&disp_srid=31&disp_modid =207
Then proceed to reinstall the OSX 10.6 driver for that scanner.
