Scanner Quality

I recently managed to connect my Umax Powerlook 2100XL to my (relatively) new iMac at work after months of trying. I downloaded Vuescan and it now works great.
I scanned in a document and it was came out lovely, so I had a look at the glass and thought it could do with a clean. After checking online I used some windex on a soft cloth and gave it a wipe.
Great...
Now the scanner seems to have some glare problem. Upon rescanning the same image (b/w line drawing), there was glare and loss of resolution on certain areas of the image.
Looking it up some scanners should not be cleaned with windex...apparently...though this Umax one should be fine according to all the sources I can find.
I've seen mention that using vinegar/water might remove the film left by windex, but trying a small amount in a corner didn't help.
Question is this:
Anyone know how to clean the scanner glass? To remove a possible film left by windex?
All comments are welcome!
cheers

Hi cblair,
From a side by side comparison there should not be any difference, because essentially what we do is take one of our existing standalone scanners and add them to our multifunctions.  For example, the same scanning element that is used for the CanoScan 9000F is what makes up the scanner in the PIXMA MG8220.  That being the case, I would only base your decision on what scanning features you need in a multifunction model.

I just updated from windows 7 til windows 8.1 and my solution center for HP C8180 dissapeared.  The printer is working well but the scanner quality is pretty poor.
Please advise how I can download HP Solution Center for Windows 8.1?

Hello Keld, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are looking for the Solution Center software.  I would like to try and help.
I would recommend downloading and running the HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers. Once the software is launched it will allow you to install any missing software.
Please let me know how that goes.  Thanks for posting on the HP Forums.

  • E71 Bar code scanner versus camera quality

So I just updated my E71 from an older firmware to the latest: 501.21.001 and it's a RM-357 (E71-2; 270.07).  I've been playing around with it to see the changes and I noticed that when using the bar code scanner, the quality of the picture is incredibly strong!  I don't remember it being that good.
Now, when I load the camera, it's the same quality as previous firmware versions, fairly poor.  "Close-up mode" is very blurry with anything closer than a few inches or 20+cm.  This is very different from the bar code scanner.
Why is this so different and how to fix it?  Can anyone else verify this as well?

I use Scandit for barcodes and it works great on my fascinate.  I have no problems.

I would like quality scanner to add and think i may as well change my printer to scanner and printer combined. Canm anyone advise on bEST to go for. Thanks mqd

On the contrary, you have an intel processor, and it's not a G5 Pro, those are PPC and can't run Snow Leopard.
I have always had good luuck with Canon Multifunction machines, try one of those.

I have scanned photos using an Epson V500 scanner set to scan using jpeg format at the highest quality (least compression) setting.  When I try to import the scanned jpegs into iPhoto, I get an error message from iPhoto saying "The file is an unrecognized format."  But if I reduce the quality setting on the Epson scanner to just slightly below highest quality, the images import into iPhoto just fine.  Why won't iPhoto accept jpegs scanned at the highest quality setting?  Wondering?

What scanner format settings dis you use?  Are these color photos? If they are B/W did you scan as grayscale images?  That could be the problem.
Are you able to open them with Preview?  If so do a Save As, select full quality and save as a jpeg with a new file name.  See if that file will import and work as intended.

  • ICA Scanner Driver gives poor quality scans Epson Perfection 1660 Photo

The controls on the ICA Scanner Driver for the Epson Perfection 1660 Photo scanner are very crude, and it's difficult if not impossible to get the quality I used to get with the previous Epson Scan driver.  Where there used to be Levels, Curves, and Zoom controls, now there are only crude Brightness and Contrast sliders.  Is there any way I can get more control over levels and curves, and zoom in on an image to fine tune the cropping, like I used to do with Epson Scan?  Or will I have to  buy a current model scanner?  The Epson Scan program for the Perfection 1660 scanner is no longer compatible with Mac OS X 10.7.

I bought Vuescan 12 years ago, got the professional version. I have used it on Mac's and a PC or two. I have been through a dozen or more scanners over the years, upgraded OS's a hefty number of times as well.  And it still works like a champ.
Best $40 I ever spent.  (what it cost back then for Pro...)
You can go to his site, and try Vuescan for free before you buy.  Not a big software company, just a guy who loves scanners, and his son.  And he's been offering the software a long, long time, and updates the product constantly.

I am looking for printer/scanner that can do this with great quality, and also be able to print onto printable DVD's.

  • HP Envy 120 scanner light fault

    Hi,
When I try to copy and scan a document all I get is vertical coloured lines. I have tried all the trouble shooting solutions, but the problem still exists and I beleive that there must be a problem with the scanner lights as they are not lit when the scaner bar moves across the scanner glass. I bought this printer in July last year so it is only 16 month old and I am very disapointed that it has alerady stopped wroking properly. I use this printer for business purpose as I am working from home and now this really frustrates me. Since I am out of warranty I tried to search for a HP authorised service provider located in Nottingham, but I cannot find any on the web. I understand that it would be cheaper to buy a new one instead of having this one repaired, but the printer and wireless functions are working fine and I have sepcifically bought a HP printer beacuse of HP reputation of good quality of product. But as I can see from reading feedback from other HP Envy users this might not be the case for this model.
Can you please advise how I can get my printer serviced in the UK, preferably in Nottingham? Thanks in advance for your kind response.

  • Print Quality HP Photosmart 5510

I have a HP Photosmart 5510 operating on Windows XP OS. The printing has started to print crooked on the page no matter if it's a print, copy or scan. I did a Print Quality Diagnostic Report and the Pen Alignment Status was a:Fail.
I then printed an alignment page but the scanner would not recognise it.
Any ideas what is causing this?

  • "Quality and Media" not displaying in Print dialog.

I am using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro with a Canon MB5220 Multifunction printer over WiFi. I have installed the Canon Drivers and can print to the printer but the "Quality and Media" menu choice does not display in the print dialog so I can't set any of the quality settings or the color settings for the printer.
I installed and re-installed the drivers. Tried with several applications such as TextEdit and preview. Only menu choices are Layout, Color Matching, Paper Handling, Cover Page, Scheduler.
Is there anything that would keep Quality and Media from dispaying?

    It's not just the Quality & Media menu that appears to be missing. There are three other Canon menus you should see like below;
These menu items are supported by the plugins bundle installed in /Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/PDEs, which supports a number of Canon inkjet printers. Since reinstalling the driver for the MG5220 has not helped then I would try a reset of the printing system and then adding the printer again. To reset the printing system, open Print & Fax, move the mouse over the Printers list and Control-click. The reset popup will appear. Select it and authenticate if prompted and then restart the Mac. Please note that this action will remove all printer and scanner queues from Print & Fax, but not the associated drivers so just the queues will need to be added again.
If this action does not resolve the problem then try running the Canon Driver Update v2.6.

  • Can I use an Epson V300 scanner to get photos into Premiere Pro?

I've got a ton of old print photos that I want to use on a video project for  CS5.5. Rather than matte them and then use my Canon camcorder, can I just buy a basic scanner like Epson 300 and convert them to digital? Will Premiere accept the scanned photos? Or would Photo Shop? The resulting project will be a low level 4:3 non HD using old video tapes, so ultra high quality is not an issue. It's a family history kind of thing. All help greatly appreciated.

You will want to go through Photoshop first.
Then, after you have Saved the full resolution scanned files (for later use), Scale them to your Video Project's Frame Size dimensions, or close, for Import into a PrPro Project. When you Scale the Images for your Video, you can choose Save_As PSD, TIFF, PNG, or even JPEG (I am far less inclined to recommend that format, as it is compressed). I choose PSD, which should Import perfectly into PrPro.
    Good luck,

  • All in One Printer/Scanner/Copier/Fax Recommendations

    Hi,
I'm looking to purchase an all in one printer/scanner/copier/fax device. I was wondering what recommendations other people have. The main purpose would be to print photos, scan photos and some small business office printing. Note, a fax would be nice, but is not absolutely neccessary.
Scanning photos would be important, since I plan to scan our family's photo albums into iPhoto.
Also, is there a printer than can communicate with the Mini using bluetooth? If so , does it work well?
Since I have limited desk space, size would be an issue (smaller the better).
Looking to spend about $200, slightly more if the cost justifies itself. Less is always better.
    Thanks in advance!

    The Brother MFC-420cn
    http://www.brother-usa.com/MFC/ModelDetail.aspx?ProductID=MFC420CN
does everything you ask for less than $100 -- except bluetooth.
The Pluses: Good Mac software. Cheap ink. Networkable.
The construction is flimsy plastic, but if you are gentle it will hold up.
    Definitely small footprint.
Paper path is 180 degrees, which is not my preference.
Personally, I prefer Epson all-in-ones. Also good Mac software and 80 degree paper path for less jamming. Exceptional scan quality.

  • HP 1536dnf MFP - scanner won't work in Win 8.1

I just bought a new Dell Desktop computer with Windows 8.1 and then discovered that there is no scanner driver or ful feature software for my HP 1536 dnf MFP.  That printer is less than 2 years old and I think it has only had a couple of toner cartridges in it.  Frankly I like the scanner function better than the print quality.  If there is no work around, I will need to take my new computer back to Sam's Club and get a refund.  I have always used HP printers and recommended them to others but I never thought that I would lose support for a product less than two years old.  Is there a work around that anyone knows about or do I take the computer back and get a Windows 7 model?  The money isn't the issue it is the hours I have put into setting the thing up before I ran into that issue.  I don't want to buy a scanner any more than another printer.

    Hi SteveAB,
If you use the device with a USB cable be sure to go to Devices and Printers and remove any existing instance of the M1536 (may be listed as M1530 as well).
Unplug the USB prior running the installation.
Next download and install the Windows 8 drivers below, I believe it should fully work on Windows 8.1 as well, I personally been able to install it and use the device on a Windows 8.1 machine:

  • HP Photosmart Scanner Doesn't Work in Yosemite

After upgrading to Yosemite my HP Photosmart 3200 printer scanner lost scanner. There are four ways to use scanner on Mac that I'm aware of  - from preview, from Image Capture, from system preferences, and from built-in printer/scanner web page.
In the Preview the Import from scanner is greyed out,
in the Image capture the scanner is not shown,
in System Preferences pressing Scan does nothing,
and in the built-in web page the preview sort of works (the image there is very small, so its difficult to assess the scan quality), but the scanning does not work.
All methods worked just fine before upgrading to the Yosemite.
I have all the updates installed, and re-installed the Yosemite a couple of times. HP driver version is 4.0.4
MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2012. Yosemite 10.10.1
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I still can't use the native scanning took in OSx 10.10, but at least I can scan documents now.
It should. This article says it is supported. OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download
What happens when you open Image Capture?
Do you see the scanner listed under devices?
If so, what happens when you select Overview?
If that works, how about Scan?

  • Keep hp 6700 in good shape: automatic print quality diagnostic page every week?

    Hi all,
I've recently bought the HP Officejet 6700 Premium, and I'm concerned about keeping it in good condition, since I had to replace my previous canon printer because of a stuck printhead (the photo black one, I didn't used it for a long time).
Since I don't print much (but I'm using the ADF scanner a lot), and other family members prints sporadically, most of the time in black and white, I would like to setup an the printer to automatically print a diagnostic page every week to make sure everything is alright.
Using eprint, IFTTT and google calendar I could automatically send a file to print (I already set up the printer to wake up a few minutes before the calendar event) with black and color bars (someone suggest to print the google homepage since it has many colors but uses little ink).
Is there any chance I can directly print the print quality diagnostic page (so I can fully diagnose a problem if it occurs)?
    Thanks for the attention
    Cheers from Italy!

    Hey,
To clarify for you and answer your new questions on the printers self maintenance.
The maintenance cycle occurs randomly. It will occur after any power up, after print jobs(not every one) and any time it "think's" printhead health is poor. As mentioned above the printer to does have to be powered on for this to occur.
You can if you'd like still print off the odd test page just to check, once a month would be adaquet.
If you want to be saving power and are turning it off, then you would want it to be at least powering on and running the automated service that occurs weekly.
I hope this clarifies everything for you. Thanks for your posts.
