Scanner recommendations for OS X?

With which scanners (out of Canon, Epson, HP) have people had best results integrating with OSX? I mean minimal driver usage, simplest operation, successful but transparent implementation of scanner buttons.
I lean generally towards Canon, and was looking at the 8800. But I wonder how the Epson and HP ones are in comparison - particular as the more complex Canon drivers, like for photo printers, can be pretty poor in my experience.
Thanks
Nic

Thanks. I have done further research, and also found a new dealer where I live who gave me what seems trustworthy advice. (I am getting a Canon.)

  • Need a scanner recommendation for slides

(Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes)
Any recommendations for a scanner that will do slides? I've got my father-in-laws slides from the last 20 years and want to scan them, but can't quite figure what scanner would do the job. I don't need (nor want to spend $) on an auto feeder, but would like to be able to scan at least 4 slides at a time. I've got old photos and negatives that I'll be scanning as well, and would spend up to $400. Thanks!!

YMMV but I just finished scanning over 1200 color 35 mm slides from the 60's and 70's for eventual prinitng and use in my scrapbooks. I have an Epson 4870 scanner and I can scan 40 slides an hour using it. It works well. The price is a bit more, $440 or so, but the advantages are worth it.
If you have 2.25 x 2.25 glass slides you will have to build your own slide holder to scan them.
I got the scanner originally for a major scanning project for the local historical society of about 1500 5 x 7 glass plate negatives from the early 1900's. It's doing good archival quality scans of these materials as well as archival scans of our other historical negatives, about 2000 nitrate negatives of our local area. It's a low end professional scanner but IMO worth every penny.
For info on digital imaging help you might want to take a look here:
    http://www.cdpheritage.org/
The best practices document on digital imaging is excellent for all the issues you will face and need to deal with. Geared towards historical collections it's still useful for personal stuff.
The Epson SW and scanner works well on the Mac. I just upgraded to Tiger, and it still is working, unlike many other items. <G>
I use Photoshop CS for histogram evaluations, image processing and thumbnail creation for the historical negatives but have just used the files as scanned for my scrapbook images.

  • Scanner Recommendations for Professional Output

    Hello All,
I hope I am putting this in the correct forum, if not PTI and I will move upon any notice.
I have a friend who is looking for a scanner to use for scanning photos and retouching in Photoshop.
This person is very excating. She just bought a Cannon Prixma (highly rated in the mags) and hated how washed out the scans of the photos were.
Tried some adjustments, but I did want to get recommendations from those in the know. Price point is wide, so any recommendations would be welcome to a scanner that would be professional level.
    Thabnk you,
    Del.

Just wanted to add one more thing:
I use the V350 mainly to scan old slides and negatives, and on the whole it does much better than the scanners I've had before. Resolution is even overkill at 6700 pixels for a 35mm frame.
There is still one problem though, and that is chromatic aberration, showing up as colored fringes towards the edges of the frame. It's fixable (just a slight misalignment of the three color channels), and I've put together a Photoshop action to take care of it. Still, it's a bother.
So I think this is an important consideration that might justify spending more money. Unfortunately, this is (again) something that you cannot infer from the specifications. Resolution isn't all.

  • Scanner recommendation for 1000s of slides?

    Hello All,
I posted here because this is a graphics questions. I recently aquired 3000+ slides from my grandparents who just moved into a retirement community. I have been using an Epson scanner to scan one slide at a time for previous projects, but as you can imagine, that's pretty tedious.
I wonder if anyone here can recommend a scanner that would allow me to scan several slides at a time. Of course, I am looking for something reasonable in price, preferably under $500. Anyone with any first-hand expierence?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
    Adam

Hi, I have been scanning negatives in 35mm, 120 and 220, and 4x5 and 8x10 format for many years. I currently have a Minolta DIMAGE Pro (discontinued), considered the BEST (Drum scanners not considered) and an EPSON 4990.
I assume you have 35mm negatives (not slides), and you want to keep all of them in storage.
My first recommendation, equipment wise, is to wait for the NEW Epson V-750 M Pro ($799). According to preliminary reviews, it is much better than the already excellent 4990, plus you get optical 6400 DPI, an absolute MUST for 35mm negatives. This will outresolve film grain (in all likelihood you will have 200 and 400 ASA film, which is very grainy).
Be prepared to do A LOT OF COLOR CORRECTION, which is what film labs do before printing, to take bad exposures and other problems people run into when using their cameras.
Another suggestion, DO NOT SCAN ALL OF THEM. It takes a lot of time, and is probably not worth it. Sort them in a light table (a 5000K good one is $60) with a 6x loupe (again another $120 for a good one). Scan for the resolution you will likely print them: if you want 5x7 or 4x6, scan at 1800/2400 dpi. Get a good system for storage and rescan if you need a larger print (do not try to print larger than 8x10, unless you really know what you are doing). Silverfast is recommended.
Be prepared to spend LONG HOURS doing this. A good 2/4 pass scan of a 35mm negative, plus correction and retouching will take no less than 5 minutes, times 3,000 is a lot of hours: More than 10 days of non-stop non-sleep work.
If you have a LOT of money, you can send them to a lab and they will give back a CD for you, for a price.
    Good luck

  • Scanner recommendation for Arch?

    Hello all,
I'd like to do some basic pic scanning and OCR of a doc or two. Anyone had any good sucess under Arch with any of the current brood of scanners?
The Canon Pixma range of multi-function thingimmies seems to perform well, but what about for Linux?
Any experience out there with scanning? What software do you use?
    Thanks!

Agree, check link. I use a hp scanjet 4300C and it works great, had it for a few years now. Had one problem with it jamming half way through a scan and that was with windows. No such problem since I dumped MS for linux.

  • Scanner Recommendation iMac

I am looking for a scanner recommendation for this iMac.
Photos, and documents, but not necessarily a document feeder.
what to look at what to avoid...
    Guidance and Thoughts welcome,

I'm not an expert but I just last year completed scanning three different huge sources of old photos to digital. I can't imagine just push a button to do stacks of photos. I had to use different settings on different photo material types to get the digital how I wanted the final result.
I used an Epson Perfection 4990 scanner with Epson software because it contains Digital Ice which itself was a life saver to revive old and damaged photos.

  • Scanner recommendations ...

    Hello All
I have been shopping around now for a couple of weeks for a scanner.
I have looked at the Epson 4490 but, I'm not sure if its Leopard compatible..
    Macintosh Requirements
iMac® or any G3 or later with built-in USB. USB: Mac OS X 10.2.x and OS 10.3.x. Hi-Speed USB 2.0: Mac OS X 10.2.7 or later. 128MB RAM (512MB recommended for Digital ICE), 450MB of available hard disk space minimum (1GB recommended for Digital ICE), CD-ROM drive (4x or faster), available USB connection.
What I'm needing this scanner for, is to scan stills for importing into Final Cut Express and, other video editing apps. I'm currently using an older Epson CX4800 all-in-one but I'm really needing something that will give me better and faster scans.
Thanks for any help and or recommendations.

The Epson website has 4490 OS X 10.5 twain driver and utilities available for download. At least Epson thinks it is compatible with Leopard. The site seems to indicate that the Leopard drivers are not on the CD that comes with the scanner.

  • Is there a registry booster and PC tuneup product like AVG or Uniblue that Firefox recommends for improved perfromance?

I am having performance related issues with my PC, including issues with Firefox locking up or freezing, and was wondering if there is a product you recommend for registry cleaning and other PC performance improvements. I am looking at Uniblue and AVG as well as some others.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
    * [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]

[http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

  • Recommendations for a new monitor?

    Greetings,
I'm looking for a new monitor for my Powermac G4 450 MHz AGP (sawtooth).
I'm currently using a Formac Gallery 1740 after 6 years it's starting to faded out on me.
I'd really appreciate any suggestion or Recommendations for a new one.

I'm using a 17" LCD, Acer model AL1706 on my G4 400MHz AGP. Was plug 'n play and has been flawless over the years. I'm sure the current model numbers are different.

  • Need a printer recommendation for a small office

hey folks, hoping someone might be able to suggest a recommendation for our business. We’ve had an OkiData color laser printer that’s lasted over 6 years but it’s been giving us some trouble over the last year and yesterday it stopped printing with an error we can’t resolve. Would have to bring a tech in to fix and we’d basically already decided that once this thing bit the dust we’d move on to something else. It’s time.
We are looking for something in the $200-$400 range, would consider going a little higher if it was clearly worth it. We want something that connects wireless, prints quickly and reliably in Snow Leopard over an Airport Extreme network, decent color print quality is important but doesn’t have to be photo quality (we have an HP Photosmart for that kind of stuff), and it needs to have reasonable printing cost per page. We don’t print a tremendous amount of stuff, but we probably go through 100-200 pages a day and it adds up.
Was looking at the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 wireless and that looks like a nice unit except half the people who buy one hate it. Looks like HP quality control is lacking and if you get a good unit, great, but the odds are good you’ll get a lousy one.
Also looking at the Brother HL-3070CW, but reviews say it has a high consumable cost.
Basically, the more I look into this the more I head spins and now I've got myself wrapped around the axle and don’t know what to do.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

I would steer clear of the 500 express. Since you seem to be new to cisco products, I would use the opportunity and buy what most of your potential customers already have. Get yourself a pix/asa and a 2900 series switch as first poster suggested. If you are interested in certifications, you will need to learn the command line interface. The 500 express will do you no good as it is all gui. This is only my opinion of course. Oh, and did I see not expensive and cisco in the same sentence. :)

  • Recommendation for maintaining pricing in CRM when R/3 is also in landscape

    Hi,
in out context we have already SAP R/3 in the landscape, all the pricing in done in R/3. lot of custom pricing routines are also written in r/3.
now we in the process of implementing CRM and plan to do Quotations in CRM and replicate in SAP R/3 . what is the recommendation for such a scenario.
do we replicate all pricing conditions/procedures in CRM? do we need to re-do all procedures in IPC?
can we re-determine pricing in R/3 so that we can avoid such work in CRM? we are using configurable products in R/3.
please share your thoughts/best practices and any document will be of help.
    thanks
    RH

    Hi Swaroop,
The Assignment of Buisness Partner classification from CRM to R3 is purely based on Classification
    so your initial Entry
I chose B as classification & Z001 as an account group which is a copy of 0001. System takes it.
    was taken by the system
now when you tried to make another Entry by the same Classification
chose B again & this time Z002 acc gp (copy of 0002), and system does not allow?
it checks for the Existing Classification and so does not allow the same
Delete the Previous Entry and then Try Entering the New Entry
    The System shall Take it
    Hope it Answered your Queries...
    Revert Back for any Doubts..

  • Any recommendations for a recovery software for my lost photos on my external drive?

Would like recommendations for a reputable recovery software for my lost photos from my external drive that I used with my MacBook Pro.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.

  • What are Best Practice Recommendations for Java EE 7 Property File Configuration?

Where does application configuration belong in modern Java EE applications? What best practice(s) recommendations do people have?
By application configuration, I mean settings like connectivity settings to services on other boxes, including external ones (e.g. Twitter and our internal Cassandra servers...for things such as hostnames, credentials, retry attempts) as well as those relating business logic (things that one might be tempted to store as constants in classes, e.g. days for something to expire, etc).
    Assumptions:
We are deploying to a Java EE 7 server (Wildfly 8.1) using a single EAR file, which contains multiple wars and one ejb-jar.
We will be deploying to a variety of environments: Unit testing, local dev installs, cloud based infrastructure for UAT, Stress testing and Production environments. **Many of  our properties will vary with each of these environments.**
We are not opposed to coupling property configuration to a DI framework if that is the best practice people recommend.
All of this is for new development, so we don't have to comply with legacy requirements or restrictions. We're very focused on the current, modern best practices.
Does configuration belong inside or outside of an EAR?
If outside of an EAR, where and how best to reliably access them?
If inside of an EAR we can store it anywhere in the classpath to ease access during execution. But we'd have to re-assemble (and maybe re-build) with each configuration change. And since we'll have multiple environments, we'd need a means to differentiate the files within the EAR. I see two options here:
Utilize expected file names (e.g. cassandra.properties) and then build multiple environment specific EARs (eg. appxyz-PROD.ear).
Build one EAR (eg. appxyz.ear) and put all of our various environment configuration files inside it, appending an environment variable to each config file name (eg cassandra-PROD.properties). And of course adding an environment variable (to the vm or otherwise), so that the code will know which file to pickup.
What are the best practices people can recommend for solving this common challenge?
    Thanks.

    HI Bob,
As sometimes when you create a model using a local wsdl file then instead of refering to URL mentioned in wsdl file it refers to say, "C:\temp" folder from where you picked up that file. you can check target address of logical port. Due to this when you deploy application on server it try to search it in "c:\temp" path instead of it path specified at soap:address location in wsdl file.
Best way is  re-import your Adaptive Web Services model using the URL specified in wsdl file as soap:address location.
    like http://<IP>:<PORT>/XISOAPAdapter/MessageServlet?channel<xirequest>
or you can ask you XI developer to give url for webservice and username password of server

Which O/S upgrade is recommended for a MAC Book Pro17 with Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz
    I am using os x 10.4.11.
Do I need to upgrade to 10.5.xx? Will this platform suport 10.6.xx? If 10.6 will work do I need to install 10.5 first?
    Thanks...

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.
