Scanner recommendations please...

I'm in the market for a new scanner. I had an Epson all in one, but the LED went out and I don't want to shell out the big bucks for another one, so I'm opting for purchasing a printer and scanner separately. I've heard that some people have had issues with certain scanners giving mac users trouble. I will generally use it for scanning photos and scrapbook pages. Can anyone suggest a scanner for me?
Thanks

Hi Ya
I use a CanonScan Lide 60 with my eMac with no problems at all.

    Thanks, A Brody.  Don't know what the PRAM battery is.  Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem).  The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated.  The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be!  Does this fit your PRAM battery theory?  If so, please explain more.  Thanks.

    I'm not an expert but I just last year completed scanning three different huge sources of old photos to digital. I can't imagine just push a button to do stacks of photos. I had to use different settings on different photo material types to get the digital how I wanted the final result.
    I used an Epson Perfection 4990 scanner with Epson software because it contains Digital Ice which itself was a life saver to revive old and damaged photos.

  • Looking for laser printer recommendations (please read!)

    I couldn't find a spot that fit this question and although I may not receive any answers here, this is a very active forum with members who are unafraid of new technology, so here's letting one rip...
    OK, I've not had a laser printer in a number of years - when my beloved LaserWriter II NTX gave up the ghost. I find that I am lately, however, printing more and more text-only or text-heavy documents at home and going through black ink cartridges like a hungry lumberman through flapjacks. Although I've not looked into laser technology for years, I am wondering if it may not be more economical to print these pages on a 'personal' laser printer (I know that toner cartridges are not cheap, either, but they are less expensive, from what I've read, than using inkjet to print text-heavy documents) than to continue racking up rebate dollars by selling my soul for black ink cartridges.
    So I am looking for a laser printer that can handle about 2,500-4,000 pages a month AND (here's the kicker!) have automatic duplex printing capabilities... I've never had this ability on a laser printer but I understand it's available on some models these days.
    I'm not looking for an 'office capable' printer - maybe more like a 'small office'? No real need for Ethernet, yet, if it's a standard feature, I would certainly use it. A small footprint would be nice.
    As I wander into the local Office Depot I am overwhelmed by the choices and yet stupefied to find that the 'hang tags' on many of the models don't really give too much information - page one can expect from a cartridge, connectivity options, duplexing capabilities (I seem to find none, yet am certain that I've read of their existence).
    So my criteria:
    1. monochrome
    2. PostScript emulation (unless CUPS supports lasers? It'd difficult to tell by the ad hype yet Apple does seem to have drivers or, at least, Brother and HP laser printers). I don't want to be limited to 72 typefaces...
    3. automated duplexing
    4. small footprint
    5. more economical to operate than an inkjet at 2,500-4000 pages per month
    6. networkable, though served through another CPU via USB is fine
    7. brand is not important - as long as reliability is high (and, like Brother, for instance, is supported by Apple)
    Please leave a message if you should have ANY suggestions or, if you can point me towards a website with a good overview of what's available (and with actual tests would even be better!) I would be very appreciative.

    Jamie,
    I just wanted to thank you once again for your suggestion of the HP LaserJet 1320. I picked one up last week at Office Depot and, after I receive my $50 mail-in rebate, my total cost will have been $139.99!
    The printer itself had an 'instant savings' of $100 off the SRP of $399.99 (and - for those who might be interested - this instant savings continues until June 30 - see the HP website for details.), bring it down to $299.99; I had an $100 Office Depot 'rewards' card plus a $10 'instant off' coupon from the previous week, bringing it down to $189.99 and there was a mail-in rebate for $50 (which, according to the paperwork, I can expect within 6 weeks) so... I was able to get a $400 printer for less than $140 (+ tax, of course).
    Still, even with $14 tax, I have to assume that I would have paid at least as much in shipping AND I only had to drive for less than 5 miles, spend 20 minutes explaining why I did not want or need either the extended warranty or the Super Special Laser Printer Official Office Depot Very Special Customer Service Box (a cable, some paper, and a few other doodads for $60) and now I've printed a couple of hundred sheets and love the thing.
    Had it not been for your recommendation, I likely would have forgotten the $100 Office Depot card until it expired and would not have sought out the printer there in the first place.
    It's such a warm and fuzzy feeling to get such a deal on such a terrific little printer... and, so, I thank you, again.

  • Laser printer recommendations please

    I need a printer that will work well with my 2008 iMac (Snow Lep) ideally wirelessly.  I need printing, scanning and copying - not huge quantities but need the quality to be good. My budget is around £150 and if I can find something that doesn't require cartridges that cost £1m each that would be a bonus!  There is so much contradictory info out there any recommendations would be gratefully received.

    it's wifi
    it works on osx it works on windows8 pro

    We would like to build necessary monitors around fast refresh that we are doing for one product.
    To start, we have a counter table in database 1 which gets refreshed to database 2 via a dblink from database 1 periodically, every 15 minutes.
    we have a materialzed view log table created to capture the incremental in database 1, which helps in fast refresh.
    We would like to be sure we get alerted and anticipate of any overlap or taking longer time to refresh. The objetcive is to be proactive.
    Could you please share the recommendations to best monitor.

  • Tethering Phone Recommendations - Please help!!!

    Hi all,
    This is my first post. I am in Afghanistan in an area that has Cell phone service that also provides GPRS internet. This is pretty much as good as it is going to get, but there are always possibilites that this internet system may be upgraded at a later time to 3G or so. This is my only means of communications with my family. I am going to use a cell phone to tether to my laptop to create a connection. I'm hoping for the best - which would be to run Skype voice or video with it - but anything is better than what we have now - which is nothing. I dont need a lot of other bells and whistles on the phone.
    The internet system there is GPRS and has a max speed of 115 k. Most of the phones I have looked at are quad band and that would be best as well. In addition, my computer does not have bluetooth so it will have to use a data cable usb type. It should also charge from this cable.
    I have to order the phone before I leave this location on thursday as after that I may not have any useful internet for three months.
    Please recommend a phone.
    must tether to provide internet "phone as modem"
    Quadband GPRS max internet speeds up to 115k
    charge from usb while connected to laptop to tether via usb
    Thank you.

    Pretty much all Nokia phones do the first 2 on your list.
    If you want to be able to charge the phone while it's connected, or at least draw some current from the USB port in order to flatten the battery less quickly, then that limits your choice somewhat. Potential candidates that aren't in the "luxury" range (8800 Arte et al.) are: 6500 classic, N85, N97.

  • External monitor recommendations please!

    I'm switching from my troublesome iMac to the Macbook Pro - I've had so much trouble with my iMac display that I'm not sure about buying the Apple Cinema Display.
    I was wondering if there are any graphic designers out there that could recommend a good monitor?
    Thanks!

    The new 24" ACD has no printing issues, at least not all the samples that I've spec'ed for purchase, installed, configured, and maintained. Not <one> client's complained about a printing inaccuracy issue, BUT- there are so many variables- the skill& experience of the operator, the quality of the files, the accuarcy and quality of the CMS (Control Management System) that's being deployed, used, and updated, the quality of the output devices, the quality of the paper/substrate, etc., being used... in other words, the 24" ACD (glass screen), is capable, when calibrated properly and used within the rest of the printing process correctly of the most repeatable, flexible, broadest color-gamut capable, overall most accurate display available in any consumer-available display... there ar equals to the new 24" ACD, namely the Eizo, Barco, and, when set up VERY carefully and specific to the display, a few of the NEC displays. The difference is that the Apple's construction quality is generally markedly better than the others, for WAY less money!
    THAT equals APPLE ACDs for my clients, in addition to, when it's finally available, the NEW (please, APPLE where for art the new 30" ACDs?), 30" ACD.
    Best,
    Charlie

  • Advice/Recommendation please? How to best handle big models with various schemas?

    Hi
    Using DM 3.3.0.747.
    We have several bespoke applications, each using its own data model in separate schemas.  They do share various entities/tables which are made available in a shared schema.  There are references to these shared tables, etc. (e.g. foreign keys)
    We want to embark on a process to reverse engineer and then maintain these applications' schemas in Data Modeller.
    I would really like your views on how to best approach this.  The main concern is that the bigger the design (or more models/sub-views) the slower actions like saving and loading it becomes.  Once you also have it version controlled more time is added onto saving and synchronising with the sub-version repository and between team members.
    The thinking is to primarily have each application (and hence its own schema) in separate designs (projects), but include tables from the shared/core schema as needed.  Would this be a good/recommended approach?
    How does one address potential changes made (differences introduced) that may conflict between these separate designs?
    e.g. in physical model the schema becomes a user that has permissions, etc.  and that same user may be in multiple designs.  Each design is version controlled, but in the end only exists once in the database.  If each design is synch'ed with the database, DDL generated and executed, this can cause one design to add permissions, etc. that the second DDL from the second design removes or replaces with its own?
    I hope my question/scenario is clear enough.  If not, please revert to me for more clarification.
    Thank you & Regards

    Hi Hans,
    I think it's better to use DM 4.0 and have everything in one design.
    1) You can import all schemas you need into one design (one relational model). Save that design - important to do it before using "remote objects" approach
    2) Use "Create new models based on schema names" wizard available in context menu for relational model in browser. Wizard will create new relational model for each schema in originating model and create there tables and views that
    belong to that schema. All objects in originating model become read-only "remote objects".
    If table (in new model) has a foreign key that refer table in another schema (now that table is moved to another new model) then "remote object" presentation is created for referred table.
    At the end you'll have one large model with read-only remote objects and set of relational models that keep the track of foreign keys between tables in different schemas in database.
    You can keep the originating model (the large one) in order to have global picture or delete it.
    Properties from physical model are also transferred to new models in DM 4.0.
    3) Check "Show 'Select relational models' dialog" in "Preferences>Data Modeler" - upon "open design"  that will bring up dialog allowing to select which model   to be loaded. The choice is persisted and
    applied next time you open design (no need to see that dialog again if no change in what to be loaded).
    4) For each model you can create "DDL generation" configuration (one or more) and exclude remote object from generation in DDL. Permissions should be maintained in model where table is editable and where DDL for that table will be generated.
    The thinking is to primarily have each application (and hence its own schema) in separate designs (projects), but include tables from the shared/core schema as needed.
    I won't recommend it. I know it's possible to have remote object in another design but you'll face following problems:
    1) You cannot use design level domains and definitions in data types model
    2) Remote object from another design are sensible to location of that remote design. You need to maintain the same directory structure everywhere designs (all related) are checked out and they need all to be checked out before dependent design to be open
    3) You need to add remote objects manually while wizard described above will do it for you in the scope of one design
    The main concern is that the bigger the design (or more models/sub-views) the slower actions like saving and loading it becomes.
    The number of models shouldn't be a problem with support of "Select relational models" dialog. Subviews will impact loading if only they are large and are visible when "save" is used.
    Total number of objects in model doesn't impact "save' operation - only modified objects are saved.
    Yes, there is overhead for versioned designs - one more reason to move to DM 4.0 - SVN client 1.7 is used there.

  • Scanner Help Please ??

    Hi All,
    I am trying to read a line of text from a file. Actually in my assignment we have to throw exception from a file means we have to write the exception text in a text file and through accordingly. Please help as I am so tired from last night trying this and that it just doesnt work.
    My file text is like this.
    # This file stores the error messages for displaying into Change Calculator
    1=Error reading transaction from the file.
    I made a function which basically tells me how many lines I have to skip as comments.
    After that I am just stuck I dont know how to read the line *1=Error reading transaction from the file.* I have tried Scanner class but it really working weirdly for me. This is my code:
    if(exceptionFile.exists()){
    readFile = new Scanner(exceptionFile);
    numberOfComments = ReadFile.number_Of_Comments(exceptionFile);
    //Skipping the comments
    for(int i=0;i<numberOfComments;i++)
    readFile.nextLine();
    readFile.useDelimiter("=");
    if(readFile.hasNext())
    exceptionNumberFromFile = readFile.next();
    exceptionText = readFile.next();
    if(exceptionFile.exists()){
    readFile = new Scanner(exceptionFile);
    numberOfComments = ReadFile.number_Of_Comments(exceptionFile);
    for(int i=0;i<numberOfComments;i++)
    readFile.nextLine();
    readFile.useDelimiter("=");
    if(readFile.hasNext())
    exceptionNumberFromFile = readFile.next();
    exceptionText = readFile.next();
    // The following line prints the first number and second line with = in it and also append second number like this
    //1 - Error reading transaction from the file.
    //2
    System.out.println(exceptionNumberFromFile +" - "+ exceptionText);
    // The exceptionNumber is passed as argument to this method and
    if(exceptionNumberFromFile .equals("exceptionNumber "))
    break;
    //Throw the new exception
    if(exceptionNumberFromFile!=null && exceptionText!=null)
    throw new Exception(exceptionText);
    else
    throw new FileNotFoundException("Specified File Doesnt Exist.");
    if(exceptionNumberFromFile!=null && exceptionText!=null)
    throw new Exception(exceptionText);
    else
    throw new FileNotFoundException("Specified File Doesnt Exist.");
    Please help !! ... and Thanx in advance ...

    Hi,
    Now I want Scanner to read a line of text from the file with format.
    1=Error reading transaction from the file.
    2=This denomination is not supported. There is inconsistency between denomination file and Initial count file.I want scanner to break one line with delimeter as '='. I want to get 1 in a String variable so that inside while loop I can check that Scanner has already read my error line and just throw it.
    while(readFile.hasNext())
                  // I want to store 1 here
                   exceptionNumberFromFile = readFile.next();
                  // I want to store Exception text here
                   exceptionText = readFile.next();
                                  //For testing
                                  System.out.println(exceptionNumberFromFile +" - "+ exceptionText + exceptionNumber);
                   //Break from loop if Exception number found in the file
                   if(exceptionNumberFromFile.equals(exceptionNumber))
                       break;
                if(exceptionNumberFromFile!=null && exceptionText!=null)
                    throw new Exception(exceptionText);
            }  Now weird means it gives me output as
    1 - =Error reading transaction from the fileIt reads the delimeter as well.
    Thanx in advance .. you geniuos people out there..

  • Need a scanner recommendation for slides

    (Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes)
    Any recommendations for a scanner that will do slides? I've got my father-in-laws slides from the last 20 years and want to scan them, but can't quite figure what scanner would do the job. I don't need (nor want to spend $) on an auto feeder, but would like to be able to scan at least 4 slides at a time. I've got old photos and negatives that I'll be scanning as well, and would spend up to $400. Thanks!!

    YMMV but I just finished scanning over 1200 color 35 mm slides from the 60's and 70's for eventual prinitng and use in my scrapbooks. I have an Epson 4870 scanner and I can scan 40 slides an hour using it. It works well. The price is a bit more, $440 or so, but the advantages are worth it.
    If you have 2.25 x 2.25 glass slides you will have to build your own slide holder to scan them.
    I got the scanner originally for a major scanning project for the local historical society of about 1500 5 x 7 glass plate negatives from the early 1900's. It's doing good archival quality scans of these materials as well as archival scans of our other historical negatives, about 2000 nitrate negatives of our local area. It's a low end professional scanner but IMO worth every penny.
    For info on digital imaging help you might want to take a look here:
    http://www.cdpheritage.org/
    The best practices document on digital imaging is excellent for all the issues you will face and need to deal with. Geared towards historical collections it's still useful for personal stuff.
    The Epson SW and scanner works well on the Mac. I just upgraded to Tiger, and it still is working, unlike many other items. <G>
    I use Photoshop CS for histogram evaluations, image processing and thumbnail creation for the historical negatives but have just used the files as scanned for my scrapbook images.

  • PDA - Recommendation Please for my MacBook Pro

    Dear Maccers,
    I have had bitter experience of using a Windows-based PDA and "Missing Sync". The Mark/Space product caused the MBP to lock up - this was known by them and duly refunded. A very helpful company.
    BUT - I still want to have trouble-free iCal and AddressBook synchronisation from a PDA. I will even buy a new PDA to achieve this - more than likely a PalmOS system I suspect.
    Can anyone offer some advice and the benefit of their experience please??

    Software updates don't upgrade your current operating system to a new one, you have to purchase a newer operting system if you want one.
    If you want iCloud, first you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.6 (10.6.8 preferred), then you can download Lion from the app store.
