Scanner Software Virtual Memory Leak

Recently I discovered that the scanner that I use (HP Photosmart 4070) had a process running in the background that used 20-30MB of RAM (not much), but the VM size would expand at a rate of 10MB or so a minute until it got noticed (or topped out, but I never found out how much that could potentially be). I can stop the process, but it starts again after I use my scanner, or restart.
Both my Hardware and Software are as up to date as they can be and I've got plenty of RAM.
Has anyone else seen this before? I searched the forums, but I only found reference to the issue, not a resolution. I was just wondering if there is an "offical" fix for this.

Hi, SuperAdam.
Is the process HP Scanjet Manager? If so, note that HP Scanjet Manager has always been problematic with Mac OS X. For example, you may find the message
SCSIAction: unimplemented
written repeatedly in either your console.log or system.log.
HP Scanjet Manager is distributed with HP scanners and all-in-one printers.
You can prevent HP Scanjet Manager from running as a Login Item as follows:
Open System Preferences > Accounts, click the lock icon in the lower-left corner of the Accounts preference pane, type your Admin password when prompted, select your_account, and then select Login Items tab. Remove ([-]) "HP Scanjet Manager" from the list of Login Items. Log out, then log in or restart your Mac.
One problem caused by HP ScanJet Manager is that the constant, repeated writing of the message SCSIAction: unimplemented to the Conosle logs can prevent idle sleep.
Good luck!

  • Virtual Memory Leak

In the course of tracking down a memory leak I've managed to start recollecting memory, but for some reason the process still refuses to free virtual memory. I'm just looking at the task manager and after a long period of memory use and then a garbage collection I get numbers like:
    MemUsage: 31,000k
    PeakMemUsage 393,000k
    VMSize 700,000k!!
And the VMSize just keeps going up. Does anybody have any ideas about what would cause this? OptimizeIt just reports that the Java Heap is hunky-dory and make it look like everything is fine.

Thanks for responding, but I'm not quite sure I
understand what you're driving at. Isn't it a problem
    if my
Unused, physical. Nothing is using it.
    and
Unused, swap. Nothing is using it.
    can't be re-used by the OS?Not really.
If your swap space fills up then it is a problem.
If the physical memory fills up then the OS swaps it to the hard drive.
    >
Is your point that my application shouldn't have a
problem with this situation? I suppose that's true. My
application is fine and can get all the memory it
needs. However if the JVM is allocated 95% of the
virtual memory on the machine then there's still a
huge problem. I mean the OS starts running off the
disk, it has to increase the swap space, etc.. And
eventually there's just no more space to give. Not a
    good situation.
Am I misunderstanding you?Somewhat. If you app fills up all of physical memory and all of the swap space then it is a problem (not to mention that your app will also probably be running at 1/10 of the speed it would normally.) But you can increase the swap space. If your app requires 1 gig, and your total virtual space is 5 gig, then it doesn't matter whether your app is using it. And it does have to be marked as in use. An app can request an allocation and it is not actually in use. And space that isn't in use does not use any real space.

  • Software update memory leak

    Hey Folks,
I've been a happy OSX user for the past 3 years.  I've upgraded several times and computers are definitely not "new" to me.
For the first time I've encountered a pretty signifiant problem from the upgrade process.
I initiated the upgrade last Thursday morning (11/20).  It completed with zero errors and rebooted.
Since then, the memory footprint of the process softwareupdated will grow without bounds.Over 4-6 hours it will grow to consume all available memory (16GB) and force a reboot/error-reboot.
While running the process will spawn multiple children processes "softwareupdate", each occupying 1.1 - 1.3 MB RAM.
I also installed the 10.10.1 update yesterday, which appeared to have fixed the problem.  However today I'm back to rapidly growing softwareupdated process
Additionally the softwareupdated process utilizes 75% - 110% CPU (from the Activity Monitor app).
Working with Apple support I've reset the SMC, PRAM and verified / fixed permissions on the OS drive.
I don't see many hits from several different searches (these forums, google, etc.).

It seems strange that I would not have heard of this issue and at least two people at your work have the same problem. Does your employer require some kind of antivirus or other 3rd party software perhaps?
Agreed.  I'm preparing for a fresh Yosemite install over the Thanksgiving holiday this week.   Based on my review of the originally loaded company tools, it looks like there are several that are no longer supported in Yosemite.  I've been performing upgrades since Snow Leppard.  Probably a good time for a fresh load regardless.

  • Not enough virtual memory to run applications after Blackberry Desktop software installation

    Hi,
I've an issue with Blackberry Desktop Software application, after installing it (versions 4.7) my laptops cannot open more applications after certain time, even you cannot open the Start menu or any other kind of window, it just shows a little box as it is trying to show the windows but does not have enough resources to complete the drawing; I have to close some windows to open another, I mean I can have opened only a certain numbers of applications.
I uninstalled the BBDS and I've the problem still, the only way to solve it, was formatting my laptop, after a time I though 5.0 version could has resolved this issue, so I installed it with my fresh laptop and happened the same behavior, in this moment the BBDS has uninstalled 3 months and the have problem yet.
I think the installation modify some windows registry that in some way disallow to free up memory, or does not inform to window there is enough memory ro tun another applications.
I noticed when increasing the Virtual memory I can have more applicationes opened but it is few.
    I really apreciate any suggestion,
    Thanks,
    Model: Lenovo T60
    RAM: 1GB RAM
Windows XP SP3 (it has latest available patches)
Virtual Memory configured from 1.5Gb to 3GB

the shortcut startup is the thing that adds (or not) the shortcut in the Startup menu, but the Desktop Manager starting at Windows start is stored in the registry.
I didn't bother to do all that, there is a clear option when you install the desktop manager that asks for automatic startup & automatic upgrade. I don't remember at which point (it's a shame, because I installed it less than 3 weeks ago and have already forgotten ! not eating enough fish), but it's there.
besides, I believe you can untick the option later, maybe in the Device Manager that is next to the windows clock.

  • Plugin-container.exe takes over and uses 100% of my CPU locking me out and leaving my PC non-functioning. Is this a bug, or a memory leak, in the Firefox software? Can anything be done to fix this problem?

In looking at Windows Task Manager I found that plugin-container.exe was taking over 100% of my CPU and my system was frozen. Is this a memory leak or other bug?

Thank you! I have been having problems with Adobe Flash since downloading the new 11.1 version. I will download it again and reinstall it, hopefully that will correct the problem.

  • Memory Leaks   Unresponsive Mouse

2009 8 core Mac Pro w/ 24 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 4870, and a SeriTek PCIe eSATA card (card only has drives connected when running a manual drive clone).  When running Toast 10 or Parallels 9, my RAM will fill up (I use a program called Menu Meters to monitor stuff).  This machine worked just fine under OS 10.9 and earlier - no issues like this at all.  ClamXAV will also completely fill the RAM up (the meter will be full green, instead of part green, then mostly grey when Toast or Parallels fills it up).  I have to use Terminal to purge it so that the machine is usable.
The other thing that happens is that sometimes when the computer wakes up or I am in the middle of doing something, the mouse will still move, but the dock will not pop open and the left button the mouse doesn't respond.  The right button will open the right click menu, but will not respond normally at all.  I have tried a different Magic Mouse, but the problem is the same.
I thought that it may be a problem with the factory RAM and the Kingston RAM not playing nicely together.  So I ran it with just the factory 8 GB and then ran it with the Kingston 16 GB - the problem persists no matter which RAM is installed.  All of the RAM also passes the memory tests in Rember and TechTool.
So, I need to find out if someone thinks that maybe the bluetooth module may be going bad causing the mouse issues.  I also need to find out what is causing the memory leaks.  I followed the steps that someone gave on this site to boot into safe mode, repair permissions, reset PRAM, then reset SMC (or the other way around - I did it like they said to).  It did nothing to fix the problem.
I need some guidance here.  As I stated early on, the machine worked perfectly with OS 10.9.  I have WAY too much software that I use, so doing a completely fresh install is out of the question - I don't have time to reload everything.  This problem is annoying and I know that I am not the only one having these issues.  Any input will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

    Here is the EtreCheck report:
    Problem description:
Memory leaks when using Toast 10 or Parallels 9.  Mouse also become unresponsive (it will move, but left button does not work and dock will not pop open - mouse problem happens independent of the RAM being filled up - different mouse was tried with same result).

  • Find memory leak

    Hi All ,
In our SAP application server (Solaris 10 X86 running on hardware HP ProLiant BL685c G5) physical memory available is day to day decreasing drastically. We suspect, there is a memory leak.
Could you please let us know how to find memory leak in Solaris.
    Regards,
    Rajesh.

    Hi Rajesh
Memory leaks have a large number of possible causes, including:
    •Unsupported hardware or software
    •Custom Scripting
    •Misconfiguration
•Third party hardware and software issues
The prstat command can be used to gather basic performance data to help identify if there are any processes consuming a large amount of memory. For example, the data below is sorted by the SIZE column. SIZE is the total virtual memory size of the process:
    prstat -s size
If you are experiencing some of the symptoms described above or if you suspect a memory leak, it is particularly important that performance data is captured so the memory leak can be confirmed. It is important to gather at least the following pieces of information:
    •Process ID (PID)
    •Size of the process
    •The executing command
•The timestamp information showing exactly when the data was captured.
    while true
    do
    for pid in `cat pids`
    do var=`date|cut -d' ' -f4`
    echo "$var :\c" >> ps.log.$pid
    ps -eo pid,vsz,rss,pcpu,args | grep $pid |grep -v grep >> ps.log.$pid
    done
    sleep 30
    done
You could check the memory utilisation details through
    #mdb -k
    ::memstat
    kmastatRegards
    Sadiq

  • Possible Memory Leak... Real problem. Please Help

    Hello,
About a couple of months ago I started getting a little concerned with my MacBook Pro's Hard Drive space, I deleted a bunch of stuff, after noticing I only had less than 1 Gb left, then I purchased an external HD and have used it to back up, and also to remove stuff from my hard drive in the computer. But now, I have noticed a problem that rather concerns me, If I put my computer to sleep after a normal day of work, and usage, when I wake it up it seems fine, and it runs about the same (a little less efficient, but not too much) then I realize that I am missing about 1-2 Gbs in Hard Drive Space. If I restart the computer, That memory comes back... and then If I keep using the computer, it leaks memory little by little.
I have tried running anti-viruses and spyware software but that does not seem to work against this issue, unless I am doing something wrong. I have also tried to update all my software and keep my processes and running applications to a minimum. Finally, I tried leaving the computer on... without doing anything, connected to the internet... It leaked some more memory. I did the same, but without the internet... and then it did not leak anymore. I have no clue how this happen or how to fix it. I have tried most of the things I know could have possibly helped, but seems like isolating the problem to the internet does not really help me, since I need it for work.
I would appreciate any suggestions or help, Thanks!!

You are describing the natural process of virtual memory and Apple's use of a sleep image. Look in /var/vm for these files. It is not uncommon to have a sleep image of a couple of GB. Think about it. You have a computer that has data on a hard drive. When you start up the machine, that data needs to move from the hard drive to RAM and then, in some cases, back to the hard drive as virtual memory. This is when you do not have enough physical RAM to hold everything you are doing. Now, what happens when the machine goes to sleep? Well, you have data in RAM that in most cases will remain there as long as there is power. On a laptop, it is possible for the contents of RAM to be written to a file in the event of a battery depletion. THis is the suspended hibernation feature that Apple has. Commonly, there is one swapfile and one sleepimage file located in /var/vm.
If you are missing a lot of space, you might instead want to check out your log files. It is possible that something caused a high number of log entries to be recorded and you have an incredibly large log file. Also, if your machine is not running between 3 and 4 a.m., you are missing the default maintenance scripts that run and rotate log files. Look in /var/log for unusually large logs.
    Hope this helps.

  • Memory Leak, Macbook

    Good day folks,
I'm looking for some advice regarding my Macbook and what is an apparent memory leak I'm experiencing. I've been getting a lot of 'beachball' activity in the last couple of months and after weeks of phone calls with Apple and a visit to the Genius bar, Diskwarrior, archive and install with Time Machine, etc., etc. it is now apparent that something is sucking memory on the machine even when I don't see any application running. Activity monitor doesn't show the CPU being taxed, but the available memory drops to almost 'zero green' in the pie chart.
Prior to me doing a clean wipe of my hard drive and a selective re-install of data, does anyone have a tip as to what might be causing this? I really don't use a lot of apps. Most common would be iPhoto, Safari, Adobe, Mail, Numbers. My iPhoto library is about 6 GBs. I have tons of available HD space.
Two items in Activity Monitor which appear to be using a lot of 'virtual memory' are 'Dashboard Client' (which I don't appear to be able to 'quit') and Apple80211Agent. I'm not very tech savvy so any tips you could offer would be appreciated. Thanks all.

What evidence to you actually have of this so-called memory leak? Memory leaks happen in software, so you would have to examine individually running applications to determine if a leak actually occurs (and you would need to know how to discern one.) If you are running out of RAM as possibly evidenced by beachballing, it may be due to the fact that you are trying to run iPhoto, Safari, Adobe, Mail, Numbers. My iPhoto library, which is more than your 2 GBs of RAM can support. What you need is more RAM.
Virtual memory usage in Activity Monitor has no meaning to you and has nothing to do with RAM usage or memory leaks.

A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • Why does my mac use virtual memory when I still have free physical memory?

I have a 2011 i7 quad core mac, I was hoping it would scream. Most of the time it does. However when trying to edit within FCPX I get a very disappointing experience with many pauses and pin wheels if I don't close every single other program.
I have 8GB of physical memory and when i'm experiencing these problems I see that i still have 1-2 gb of physical memory free or inactive. At the same time FCPX is only using 2gb of memory. I just happened to keep an eye on the VM page in/outs and noticed them going up.
Right now i'm doing some browsing and emailing, that's about it.. its sat with over 4gb of memory free or inactive and yet still the page in/outs is still going up occasionally. It's currently at over 2 million page ins, and over 1 million page outs.
So with so much physical memory free why is this happening!? At the moment the mac feels nice and responsive, but if i start trying to use FCPX i'll start to experience these slowdowns, stalls... whenever i see these i see my main hdd is being accessed whilst the pinwheel is displayed.. I mean i get it, its VM, the hdd is too full, a bit fragmented perhaps, its stalling... but i've got gigs of memory sitting free or inactive... why wont the OS use it!!!
Would my experience improve if i took the plunge and got 16gb of memory instead of 8gb!?
    Thanks for your help!

Because without virtual memory, managing computer RAM is a royal pain in the ...
Virtual memory cost you nothing, and gains you huge benefits, even if you do not notice it
What cost you is when you need more real RAM than is available, and things are thown out of RAM, either back to the original file it came from (Read Only information), or pushed out to the swapfiles (/var/vm/*).  Then the system has to wait for slower disk access.  But even this is better than not being able to run the apps until you quit something else.
(speaking as someone that starting his professional life working with 1" punch paper tape, 80 columns cards, 7-track and 9-track mag tapes, 1MB disks (you heard me right 1 Megabyte), etc..., and trust me when I tell you that virtual memory is a god send to software development).
There are a lot of problems running a modern operating system with out virtual memory.  For example all the shared libraries and frameworks that provide services to an application would all need to be compiled into the application, which means every application gets bigger and instead of having a single copy of the shared library or framework, you would have dozens of copies wasting your RAM.
Without virtual memory, you would be required to find a contiguous chunk of RAM to run your application.  Think of this like going out to dinner by yourself, you can find any available table, but if you go to dinner with your extended family, you need a table for 10 to 15, and if you are going to dinner with your high school graduation class, you will need hundreds of seats all next to each other and a very large table.  In the later situations you have to wait until the resturante has enough contiguous space, which means you have to wait until other diners finish.  There may be lots of empty tables, but they are not together, and your group wants/needs to sit together.  Virtual memory allows gathering any 4K chunk of RAM, building a virtual memory map for all those random 4K chunks, and make it look like one big contiguous chunk of RAM, so you can run your application right away, no waiting.
Going back to shared libraries and frameworks.  This code will need to have addresses resolved so they branch to the correct locations during execution, and it will need to have addresses resolved on where its program variables are located in RAM.  Using virtual memory, you can local a shared object into RAM, then place it in everyone's virtual memory map at the exact same RAM address.  This means everyone can use the exact same code, and since everyone is using it at the same RAM address, it makes life so much easier for the operating system (translation, less work, less wasted CPU time, faster execution).
When a program wants to grow, for example a web browser loading a web page (and its images) into RAM, it needs to allocate additional RAM.  In the contiguous RAM model, you need to get control of the RAM that imediately following your program, but if that RAM is being used by someone else, you have to wait until that program goes away.
Virtual memory provides protection from another program looking at and modifying your program's RAM.  Malware would just love for virtual memory to go away.
You want virtual memory.  What you do not want is excessive paging activity.
If you are concerned, then you can launch Applicaitons -> Utilities -> Terminal.  Once you have a terminal command prompt, enter the following command:
    sar -g 60 100
which will tell you the number of 4k pages written to /var/vm/pagefile ever minute for 100 minutes (modify the numbers to suit your tastes).  You can then go about your normal usage, and come back later to see how much you have been using the pagefiles.  If you have mostly zeros, and an occasional small burst, this is noise, and not worth worrying about.  If you have sustained pageout activity, with higher numbers, then you should either consider running less things all at the same time, or looking for an application that is being greedy with its memory use (or has a memory leak), OR get more RAM for your Mac if you need to do all those things at once.
But do not complain about virtual memory.  Life would be much worse without it.  Then again if you have a better idea, write a research paper, and get operating system vendors (as well as hardware vendors) to implement your ideas.  I am serious, as I've seen many accepted computing ideas be overturned by good new ideas.

  • Yosemite and Mail massive memory leak and excessive CPU usage

I've just installed Yosemite and upgraded to 10.10.2 via the AppStore. Now I have a problem with Mail sucking up all the CPU (>106% !) and memory (>8Gb and rising while doing nothing). Everything runs fine when I quit Mail. Very disturbing behaviour!
I've tried several suggestions found elsewhere on the board here, such as turning off and even removing all Mail plug-ins including SpamSieve, but without positive results. I've tried un-selecting 'Store draft msgs on server', as well as the option for junk and sent msgs. but again without any difference. Going Offline within Mail also makes no difference to its memory hogging or CPU usage.
I notice this is an issue that's been around since last year (wish I'd known that before upgrading to Yosemite today) and I am just completely flabbergasted that it still exists. Would've thought Apple'd have fixed it in the first but certainly in the second incremental OSX Yosemite release.
Is there anything else I could try that's proven to be effective in stopping Mail's massive memory leak?

Okay, I've run Disk Util and restarted. Seems to have made a little bit of a difference to the RAM gobbling in that it appears to be going at a slower rate, but it's still up at around the 45Gb after an hour. Here's the EtreCheck report in the hope that it helps.

  • Memory Leak - still!

I browse a lot of each working day on any of 3 machines (2 iMacs & a MBP) & get really fed up having to close safari to release up to a gig of real memory despite closing ALL windows. Is this something that will ever get solved or is it just the nature of opening & closing 10's of pages & tabs during a session?
(PS please don't mention the "reopen all windows from last session" thingy - doesn't always work if interacting with a page)

    Hi Jonathan
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Yep, Safari eats memory and doesn't give it back easily. Been that way for some time.
Cover Flow, History Flow, Top Sites, multiple tabs/windows etc. all consume RAM (real or virtual). Apple's contends OS X, especially Snow Leopard, is quite efficient at managing system resources. Hence, from what I've read, there is no need to "release memory" unless you are running a high-intensive memory processor driven program (eg Final Cut Pro) requiring more system resources. Personally, I ignore RAM numbers unless I see a noticeable sluggishness in machine performance.
I follow the maxim "more RAM the better". Have you maxed RAM in your machines?
Also, have a look here for work being done on WebKit (Safari's engine) relative to memory leaks.
I suggest sending feedback to Apple's Safari team via the Safari Menu>Report bugs to Apple. While Apple doesn't personally respond to these queries/comments, it's important software engineers hear from users about their experience.

  • Memory leaks continuing in Safari and Web Kit

Will Apple ever fix the Safari memory leak?
As many of you know lots of reports over the years of Safari & Webkit having problems with memory leaks, and haven't seen a fix to it yet. This is a very important factor for usability of Safari.
A memory leak is when, after a period of time, your browser, which is the online field that's designed to function like a page and is used to access web pages and surf the World Wide Web, consumes more and more of your computer's memory until it reaches a point where it literally becomes impossible to use your computer. It's like your computer's stuck in cyber mud. You have to close any open software program or restart the entire computer.
Safari starts about 426.9 MB of real memory and 412.6 MB of virtual memormy and can go up to 1Gb of memory.
Has anyone come up with a fix to this problem ? If anyone has a workaround for this, please share it.
Meanwhile, Apple really should eliminate this problem once and for all.
FYI, I'm using Safari version 5.0.3 and the latest WebKit r72487 which was built on 21 November 2010.

My experience is that the same thing happens with Firefox and Chrome. The only difference with Chrome is that since the tabs are separate threads, they consume memory separately. The nice thing about that is that once the tab is closed memory is instantly freed. However, the helper thread always gets larger. Whether this is a memory leak or a consequence of having an application open over a long period of time is -I believe- open to discussion. I have experienced similar results with Eclipse (a memory intensive application). Daily shutdown/reboot and a few "Quit"s per a few hours fixes this issue. I don't know whether you would like to do this, though.
    Using Safari 5.0.2.

  • Running out of virtual memory

How do I increase the virtual memory? My Mac is running slow and seems to be bogging down at times. Can/will anyone help?
    Thankx in advance
    Marquis

It probably said you were running out of application memory.
There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the  leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.
