  • Converting 35mm slides

Has anyone found a good product for converting 35mm slides to digital images that drops the image into Photoshop Elements?  If so I am keen on any recommendations and suggestions.

I own the Wolverine unit which I purchased from Amazon
    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_13?url=search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-keywords=sl ide+scanner+35mm&sprefix=slide+scanner%2Ccomputers%2C178
The scannned slides are processed in the unit and you get JPEG files. These files are stored on a camera card  which you upload to disk.
I have scanned over 200 slides. Above is a picture taken in 1957, right out of the scanner without further enhancement.
TIP: If you decide to go this route, scan the portrait oriented slides in landscape mode. Otherwise, on some, there may be cut-off. You can rotate them on the computer subsequently.

  • Converting record albums to digital format and importing to iTunes

I'm trying to convert record albums to digital format using a USB turntable and import the tracks to iTunes.  I have upgraded to the latest versions of software for the turntable and iTunes (10.5), but keep getting a message "unable to export to iTunes."  When iTunes opens up, it indicates that it is converting a temp file (e.g., temp6) rather than the individual tracks.
Confession:  I did something really dumb that may well have contributed to my problem.  The first time I started using the turntable, I recorded the album side; typed in the artist, album, and names of individual tracks; and clicked on the button to begin the export to iTunes.  When the iTunes windows opened up, things seemed to be working well.  I could see the individual tracks listed as they were being converted.  Then, a popup screen came up asking if I wanted to upgrade to the latest version of iTunes (I didn't have the 10.5 version at the time).  I temporarily lost control of my body (and mind) and clicked on yes.  This halted the conversion in process and I have never been able to get things working again, despite uninstalling and then reinstalling both the turntable software and iTunes software (including iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, and Apple Application Support).
I would really appreciate some help with this!

Do not use the "export to..." feature.  Let the conversion program create a file in an iTunes compatible format (such as WAV, AAC, or MP3) and then add that file to iTunes.

  • 35mm slides to digital by use of SLR

Hi, I would appreciate feedback/advice regarding experience with using a lens 'slide adaptor' (for want of a better expression). My Canon EOS 1D has a 28 to 70 f2.8 zoom with a 77mm 'filter' end. Many thanks.

    John.....
The sort of device you're looking for is the Ohnar Digital Duplicator (about £70 in the U.K.)
    http://www.ephotozine.com/equipment/tests/testdetail.cfm?test_id=124
I used the film version of this product for many years, and found it an excellent product - it's still sitting in a drawer at home, though rarely used these days.
With film you had to run a series of tests to work out the best distance to set your flash, but once you'd done that it was fairly automatic. I found flash was the most consistent light source, but you can of course use daylight. With digital, getting the right settings would obviously be a lot quicker.

  • Converting cassette tapes to digital format

Here's some information for anyone who wants to digitize music from vinyl, cassette or any other analog device with RCA outputs.
The Alesis phono link RCA to USB adapter has finally become available. This device digitizes analog input from a cassette player or turntable and uses a USB connection to your Mac for input of the digital audio. GarageBand works well with this device.
Information about the Alesis phono link adapter is here.
It's available from B&H in NYC.

I did a search on this but was unable to find anything.

  • Why did my CanoScan 8800F stop scanning my 35mm slides into IPhoto 09 version 8.1.2 (424)?  I did it exactly the same way as I had done about two hundred other slides.

I had been using my CanoScan 8800F unit to transfer 35mm slides into digital pictures within my IPhoto 09, Version 8.1.2 (424).
All of a sudden it stopped transferring photos even though I could hear it scanning.  Any ideas "why/"

I guess I will wrap this up. I have abandoned iPhoto and viewing my Photo Streams using it and moved to Adobe products (Bridge + PS). So that's that.

  • Scanning 35mm slide to convert to digital.

I am about to begin scanning 35 mm slides I have taken over the last 30 years hoping to preserve in a digital format. Are there any tips I should be aware of in preforming this task. I am particularly interested if here are any settings for size... so that when they are projected on screen I have something filling the screen without large amounts of black boarders.
Also is there any special way they should be stored in iPhoto. (other than events, etc.)
Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

    Lauraly.....
I haven't actually done what you intend but here's some things to consider.
Your 35mm slides have an aspect ratio of 3:2 ( 36mm x 24mm). Normal TVs and many Monitors have and aspect ratio of 4:3. Some widescreens TVs are 16:9. This means you wont get a 35mm slide to fit exactly. Either it will be 'letterbox' sshape on your screen or if you size to fit then something will be cropped off.
As for scanning you should consider what resolution you need for the end display. If your display has for example a width of 1280 pixels then you should aim to scan the slide to achieve the same number of pixels - which works out to be approx 355 pixels/cm or 900 pixels/inch. For a TV you could probably get away with less.
If your scanning the slides you may want to go flat out so that the images could also be printed out sometime in the future in which case you may want to scan at something like 3200 or 6400 pixels/inch.
Once you've scanned the images you'll need a program to make the slide show. Photoshop Elements 5 can do this but in my opinion Proshow Gold is a better program. Don't make a Video CD (VCD) - the quality of the playback is poor. Go for high quality DVD
Elements can't actually burn the DVD - you need another program for that. Proshow will do everything and more.
You can download a free program from Microsoft called Photostory 3. It will allow you to make the slide show for playback on your PC - including music - but to make a DVD you need another program. If you have a DVD burner the s/w for that may be suitable.
    Hope this helps.

  • I HAVE MANY OLD SLIDES FROM MY FAMILY,WHAT IS A GOOD 35MM SLIDE  SCANNER  THAT CAN BE USE WITH MY MACBOOK PRO?

    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a scanner or other device for old family slides that must converted in a digital format  and saved in a DVD and external hard drive?
    Thanks
    Wandafromqc

Don't even think about scanning thousands of slides yourself. If you have 5000 family slides, it's overwhelmingly likely that just 500 of them will give a highly effective representation of the whole collection, and will include not only all of the best ones but many of the second-best ones too. Scanning them all, or even half of them, will consume your entire summer and would probably give you and your sibs a lot more pictures than any of you really wants to keep.
It used to be true that scanning slides halfway decently required an expensive dedicated film scanner -- consumer flatbed scanners just weren't up to the task. That's no longer true. I have an under-$200 Epson Perfection V500 Photo flatbed scanner that outperforms the $2000+ Nikon film scanner I've had for 9 years in slide and negative scanning, and the software that came with it enables me to scan several (6 if I remember right) slides at once and automatically saves them as separate image files. That makes it much faster to use than the film scanner, and of course I can also use it for scanning flat reflective material, such as the more than 1000 old photographic prints and post cards I've digitized for my local historical society. The film scanner couldn't have done any of that.

  • Looking for best way to convert 35 mm slides to digital images

    Hello Apple Community,
Am researching best ways to convert several hundred 35 mm slides into digital images.  There are numerous scanners/converters out there but want to ensure I get the best unit compatable with my iMac (27 inch, Late 2009).  Any suggestions welcome.

For scanning 35mm slides you need a scanner with a good photometric resolution and geometric resolution.
For the photometric resolution: Get a scanner with a high density range (D-max) value, to get a good resolution of highlights and shadows.
For the geometric resolution - sharpness and detail - try to get at least 3200 dp,i to be able to get good 8"x10" prints from your scanned slides, a higher dpi value, if you want to be able to print larger images.

A moderator will probably delete or close one of the duplicates as soon as seen.
Just a note...Photoshop Elements 13 and Premiere Elements 13 are standalone products. Each comes with the
Elements Organizer 13. When both are on the same computer, they share the same Elements Organizer 13.

  • Convert iphoto slide show to mov format?

hello, I just want to ask that, can I convert iphoto slide show into mov format??? I tried to select all pics, and export them as a mov, but the problem is, in the iphoto slide show, the pics can be moved and fit the screen size, but when I i export it, the pics just set in the middle , no any effect.

    1. Select the photos you want to use, and click on the +. In the window that appears, select slideshow, and give your project a title.
    2. Choose your transitions and music.
    3. Go to File>Export; this will create a QuickTime movie- a .mov file.
    4. For information on playback, read this section from QuickTime Player Help.
    _Viewing Movies at Full Screen_
You can set the screen so that only the movie is visible, not the QuickTime Player window, desktop, or other windows. This presentation setting is called "full-screen mode." (You can also set a movie to play at half size, double size, or other sizes.)
To play a movie at full screen, do one of the following:
    Choose View > Full Screen.
Choose View > Present Movie, choose Full Screen, and click Play.
To quit full-screen mode, press Esc. To adjust the way the picture is sized to fit your screen, such as stretched to fit or in letterbox format, move the pointer to the top of the screen to display the QuickTime Player menu options, and then choose a setting from the View menu. The following additional options are available in full-screen mode:
Fit to Screen: The content is scaled to fill your screen as fully as possible without cropping the movie or changing the aspect ratio.
Zoom: The content is scaled and cropped to completely fill your screen in at least one dimension. This can eliminate black areas on the top (letterboxing) or side (pillarboxing) but may hide or distort the content.
Panoramic: The content is scaled to fit your screen and the outer horizontal edges compressed to avoid cropping the image.
You can also cycle through all of the available full-screen options by clicking the button in the movie controls that appear when you move the pointer.
You can also set options for all movies playing at full screen. For example, you can hide the movie controls or change the amount of time they're displayed before being hidden. To set these options, see QuickTime Player preferences.
Note: As long as "Display full-screen controls" is selected in QuickTime Player Preferences, you can make hidden controls appear by moving the pointer.
    I hope this helps.

  • How to Convert Analog Music Recordings into a Digital Format

I am relatively new to Mac computing and would really like to convert my older LP records into a digital format so I can listen to them via an IPod or CD player.
I need to know the basics and what I would need to be successful. Can anyone help?

    Hi Kcv
    no prob's!
so for the interface, well it really depends on a few factors:
    1. your budget
    2. what else you will be using it for (e.g. will you be making/creating music using Garageband or perhaps any audio creation program in he future?)
    3. the portability of the interface.
    4. Whether you really need firewire (relates to 2.)
Needless to say, the more you spend the better the quality and vice versa. However, if you're thinking of only transfering vinyl to digital then the imic will suffice. However, i found a few others that might give you a few more choices. I can't vouch for their quality - but the manufacturers are all reputable in the world of semi-pro audio.
    1. http://www.dv247.com/invt/30313/ Edirol UA-1EX (USB around £25 - sorry i'm London based so am not sure what that is i canadian dollars but am sure it will be better than the price if you convert it yourself)
    2. http://www.dv247.com/invt/32730/ Behringer UCA202 (also USB and around £24)
    3. http://www.dv247.com/invt/30207/ Behringer FCA202 (cheapest firewire interface i've ever seen similar price to the above)
If you anticipate using Garageband or another program to make music then i'd recommend getting a firewire interface and spending more.
the imic seems cheaper than the rest and i'm sure will do the job just fine.
As for where you can purchase it. Just did a quick google and came up with www.vibecomputers.com selling the imic at about $41 canadian and FrontierPC selling the imic at $50 CDN.
If you choose another product look for a computer or audio equipment retailer.
    Cool.
Hope that helps. By the way if you feel any of the posts in this thread have helped feel free to award stars appropriately.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask!
