Scanning 35 mm slides and negatives

I would like to start a project of converting all of my many 35 mm slides and negatives to create DVDs, probably with FotoMagico2. I seek some advice as to the best scanner for this project. Two have been recommended to me, a Canon 8800F and an Epson V500. Both are around $200, which is an acceptable price, and both can more than one image at a time (a timesaver). Any advice as to which of these is better, or if there is an even better alternative? If so, I would appreciate it.

I have used an Epson SU 1640 and i am using an Epson V700 these days. I am verry satisfied with these products. As for filmscanners, i have used the low priced Minolta Dimage Dual Scan III in the past. It's performence was good but the quality delivered by V700 made it obsolete.
The V500 would be my choice based on the expereance i had with its big brother the V700 and the SU 1640 (witch is a mutch older model). I also recomend Silverfast software to get good quality scans out of dificult negatives or slides. The Silverfast SE version is often included with the scanner ( check this out for the V500). Silverfast offers trail versions on it's site and has special prises for upgrades and crossgrades. The SEplus version is my preference for a mariage between economy and performance. I have used it, with the SU1640, for some time before i upgraded to the V700 and Silverfast Ai. The only reason for this upgrade was that i continue to use medium format film beside my digital camera.
There is one last thing. Scanning 'many slides and negatives' with scanners and software in this product range is verry time consuming.

  • Scanning Slides and Negatives:  JPEG vs. TIFF - what do I really give up?

I am about to scan about 1,200 slides and color negatives and am trying to determine whether I should produce JPEGs or TIFFs. I did a test run and compared the quality of 4,000 dpi JPEG vs. TIFF and the image quality appeared similar - even when comparing print enlargements using a lupe. The file sizes differ dramatically -- so I am biased to produce JPEG, all other things equal. I understand that one major difference is that each time a JPEG is saved, some image degradation occurs since the compression is not 'lossless'.
A few questions regarding the drawback of using JPEGs as my 'masters' in Aperture:
    - Since I am using Aperture, and a feature of Aperture is always maintaining the 'master' without change, do I not have some protection against image quality loss (i.e., beyond that which occurred during the initial scan)?
    - Is there any adjustment that cannot be made within Aperture to a JPEG, that can be accomplished with a TIFF?
    - Any other drawbacks that I should consider when using a JPEG as the 'master' for my images within Aperture (vs. TIFFs)?
Note that I am not concerned about drawbacks associated with functionality in other programs (Photoshop, etc.), just drawbacks associated with functionality in Aperture.
    Thanks!

Along the lines of Live Picture, which was the first colour correction software for ColorSync, and LinoColor which was the first colour capture software for ColorSync, Aperture constructs ICC colour matching sessions to show the colours different colour devices are capable of forming, and does not change the source pixels in the colour correction process.
Nonetheless, JPEG is a lossy model by definition. It works the way compression works in the CIELa*b colour model or in Kodak's colour model for PhotoCD, that is, by destroying information in the chroma channels and preserving information in the lightness channel. Using JPEG as archival master is not a good idea imho, at least not if changes are to be made to the archival master.
For archival masters, select a colour correction ICC colour space (a 'working space' in Adobe terminology) that is large enough to hold any colours you are capable of capturing, and large enough to hold any colours the innumerable colour devices you will be matching to are capable of forming. You can use the Apple ColorSync Utility to check gamuts.
You cannot reproduce a colour that you do not have in your source colour space, even if the colour device you are matching to is capable of forming that colour. For instance, don't use sRGB that is too small to form the colour of pure cyan on bright art paper in ISO 12647 offset printing. And you may want to use TIFF that can be compressed losslessly. Always embed the ICC profile for the colour space in which you capture/corrected the image. Otherwise, there is no definition of the colours your colourants should form on colour devices that need to have the colourants changed in order to form the colours you intended.

  • Scanning slides and negatives for iMovie

What dpi setting should I use to scan my 35mm color slides and b/w negatives that will be imported into iMovie? I may want to print some of the photos too, so should I use a higher dpi and will iMovie compress the image to what it needs? When completed in iMovie, I'll burn to dvd with iDVD.

Hi Rick - my (not very powerful) dedicated slide scanner just scans to 1800dpi, and they usually result in rather dark images that have to be 'pushed' a lot in Photoshop - then the results are very acceptable. While in Photoshop you can also remove dust and other blemishes (some of my old ones had tiny patches of mould, and a few scratches as well!). As others say, scan at highest dpi possible - this also allows for some KB zooming (which is very useful especially for pics taken in portrait-mode).
In a few cases with very dark slides, the scanning was not very successful, so I used my video camera aimed at a projector screen (keep the image small), which worked very well, even allowing for zooming and panning to be done.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is a good slide and negative scanner?

Just a warning, I'll be posting this in multiple forums to get a good selection of opinions.
Hi, I need to buy a film and slide scanner. I like epson, but in my experience with these types of scanners, they can be sketchy in quality. Can you suggest a good slide and film scanner that you've used and that works well?
    Thanks,
    Stan

I've used a Nikon Super Coolscan 8000 before, with spectacular results -- great colours, good grain management, excellent infrared-detection dust and scratch removal, fantastic resolution and sharpness. My only complaint is that due to the curvature (concavity) of slide film, the focus was not equally sharp across the entire image. If focus is set to the centre, the edges and corners were a bit sharper. Anyway know of a scanner in the same price ballpark (circa $1500-$3500) that handles that aspect better? eg. glass sandwich to flatten the film or something?

  • Difficulty scanning slides on my Epson V600  running Lion, Adobe Photoshop CS6,  and can no longer use the Epson scan application or the plug in for Photoshop. Should I revert back to leopard in my time machine to finish scanning my family slides?

I am running Lion 10.7.5, Adobe Photoshop CS6, scanning slides on my Epson V600 and can no longer use the scan application or the plug in for Photoshop. Should I revert back to leopard in my time machine to finish scanning my family slides?
In 10.7 there is not a twain that works with Photoshop for importing with all the options needed to scan transparencies. I noticed that when I was scanning in October 2012 I was still using CS6 so somehow I was managing to be able to use all the scan features.
They sell 2nd party software (VieScan and Silverscript)which I found to be just mimially OK and very hard to use.
I just want to scan like I used to.
Can I use time machine to go back to an earlier operating sysytem LEOPARD,  and then do my scans and then save the photos and them go back to the LION system?
I spent 7 hours trying crazy solutions - downloading Windows CS2 Photoshop and then using a program so I could run it on the apple. Then I couldn't figure out how to put a plug in for the scanner in the stupid windows Photoshop program. Googgling the computer like a mad woman trying to ask questions. I am not giving up...
    Please help if you can...
    Thanks...

I assume you've tried using Image Capture. Give VueScan a try.

  • My daughter wants something to scan photos and negatives to her ipad...any suggestions

Any suggestions on what to get for scanning photos and negative to an ipad? Thanks!

Search the App store - there are dozens of scanning apps available for free or fee.  But read the description carefully or visit the developer's site as some may not be great for photo's, and especially for negatives (many seem optimized for scanning paper images or documents).
P.S. you might want to experiment with searches in the App store - using "film scanner" brings up different apps than just using "scanner" does - there do seem to be at least some apps specifically intended for scanning films and negatives.

  • Organize scanned slides and digital images into Adobe Lightroom 3

I am working as a volunteer at a small museum, and need to import a large number of scanned slides and associated information into Adobe Lightroom.

I also need to import digital images into Adobe Lightroom.  Adding metadata to each digital image so that specific images can be located using appropriate key words.

  • Scanning 127 format slides

Only choice on film size 35mm (optioned is grayed out). I have old 127 format slides that I want to scan, and not have cropped to 35mm. Any solutions?

    Hello.
The 9000F is only able to scan 35mm negatives, 35mm slides and 120 format film.  Your 127 format film may not be detected properly.
To try and scan the film, please open the IJ Scan Utility on your computer.  Next, click the Scangear option in this program.  When the Scangear window appears, select the Advanced Mode tab and try to preview the film.  The program will attempt to detect the film and provide you with additional options if the film is detected properly.

  • Color fidelity between slides and FCE output

Until the recent past, I have been scanning 35mm slides using a Cannon Canoscan 9900F coupled with Photoshop Elements v 2.0 into FCE v 3.0 on a Mac G-4 with OS 10.4.3. The color fidelity between the slides and final output was reasonably good. Within the past week I have upgraded system software to OS 10.4.8; upgraded Photoshop Elements to v 4.0 and FCE to v3.5.1. Now when I scan slides, the resulting images (both on the desktop and as printed with an Epson stylus 2200) are dark as if the slides were greatly underexposed. The Photoshop Elements correcting or enhancing tools do not solve the problem. I don’t think this is a monitor calibration issue but would welcome any suggestions. Thanks in advance. Jack A

    Hi(Bonjour)!
What is the relation with FCE ? It's seem that is more a problem with MAC OS X itself or photoshop or your scanner than FCE.
    See MAC OS X forum:

Try to make a new color profile for your monitor.

  • Scanning 35 mm slides to iphoto

Do I need special equipment to scan 35 mm slides to iphoto?
    Thanks!

    remulak:
What is the ultimate use of your scanned slides? I just finished scanning a box of slides for a friend using my Canon 8600F with the slide attachment and they came out very good in my opinion. I scanned at 1200 dpi as they were only interested in prints abut 5 x 7 max. I was skeptical of using it at first as I had scanned 5000+ slides several years ago with a Polaroid SprintScan 35LE, a dedicated slide scanner. I was very happy with the results. Also, you can scan multiple slides at a time. Canon's software will separate the slides automatically into separate files. I use it thru Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
You have to consider the following: how you plan to use the scanned files, how many files you have to scan, the cost of the dedicated scanners and the fact that once you are thru, you'll have a very nice door stop. At least with a good flatbed scanner with transparency capabilities you'll have a useful flatbed scanner when you're done.
It's amazing how much better the scanning software is today compared to when I bought the Polaroid. Far much better color.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • My iPhone won't allow me to scan for any network and won't even pick up on any wifi networks near by. How do I fix this?

My iPhone 4s won't allow me to scan for any networks and won't even pull up wifi networks near by. How do I fix this?

Settings > General > Network > Reset Network Settings.
If that does not resolve the issue...
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Has any of this been tried?

I am using a MAC Running Yosemite.  When I try to scan a document, after the printer scans Adobe Acrobat quits and I get an unexpected closure error.  I am running Mac OS 10.10.1.  This only started happening when I installed the update of Adobe Acrobat.

    Hi MEW1,
Is the printer connected wirelessly or wired?
Go to Preferences and under categories go to > Convert to Pdf then select the Image Capture and then hit ok button.
Close Acrobat and then relaunch it and see if it helps you while you do scanning.

are you working with business content extractor only, i mean no enhancement to that field ? i think it can be 'program error' that po quantity is not correct, try to search oss note ? what's your r/3 PI level ? applied the oss note mentioned before working with lo-mm pur ? it's stated in mm pur extraction doc (if you have not this doc, let's know your email, will send you).
if you are using business content extractor only without enhancement to this field, you may create oss message to get sap help. debug with rsa3 option debug marked is possible.
    hope this helps.

    Hi Rod,
As originally stated in my opening post, the SWF is to be inserted into an Articulate '13 slide (what I called an aggregator originally - I tried not to bring them up since I don't want the chatter about "There's your problem - using Articulate"! ).
Recall that posting this published file to our LMS did not allow right-mouse click functionality as the flash player menu just gets in the way.
If I insert the captivate 6 files into Articulate as a Web Object (referencing the entire folder with html, htm and assets, and then posted to our LMS, and it DOES allow RM click operations in both IE and FF (although no sound on the Captivate slide in FF). But this is not what we want to do as this introduces 2 navigation controls (the Captivate one and the Articulate Player).
Why must anything be posted to a web server for this functionality to work?
I am able to go into the Captivate 6's published folder, and launch the Captivate demonstration by simply double clicking on the index.html file and this works great in both FF and IE after changing the security settings for flash.
Again - I can not believe I am the only one out there trying to use the right-mouse click feature to do a software simulation by embedding the Captivate SWF into an Articulate '13 project.

  • What is happening in the most recent keynote when I click on a slide and it pulses (larger-smaller)  Two of my slides have disappeared in the navigator although if I play through them they are there.

What is happening in the most recent keynote when I click on a slide and it pulses (larger-smaller)  Two of my slides have disappeared in the navigator although if I play through them they are there and the slides have their orignal number--there are just white spaces where the slide should be and I can only get to the slide by clicking through from the prior slide.  How do I get the sldies back into the navigator so I can see them.  Oddly, they are show up just find on the light table.

Try removing any transitions or builds on these slides, or delete the slides then recreate them as fresh slides.
There are many playback anomalies in Keynote 6 which Apple have said they will be  sorting out next year.
