Scanning and OCR
After scanning and OCR, when an attempt is made to seach the document, instead of locating the desired text, only a square box appears in the upper left corner of the document. Only after running OCR again from within the Adobe interface does the document become searchable. Any ideas are welcome.
Thank you.
Don't have the scan profile do OCR.
OCR after you have the scanner's output image in the PDF file.
Then OCR Searchable Image (Exact) is available as a choice when you initiate OCR.
Using Acrobat XI Pro you can build an Action that calls out the use of Searchable Image (Exact).
OCR a directory of PDFs that hold the scanner output images.
Close out the Action with a Save As.
Be well...

Scanned and OCR'd PDF--OCR content is not indexed
I am setting up a new SharePoint 2013 install, and have put a handful files in a doc library to test search. The content has been indexed, and I can find the content inside many files and file types without issue--including "native" PDF files.
However, it doesn't seem to index the content of a scanned and OCR'd (text with image overlay) PDF. I have verified that the text is indeed in the OCR text by copying and pasting phrases, and I also confirmed that the crawl log shows the file as successfully
crawled. The filename is also indexed.
So... it would seem that the SharePoint 2013 indexer does not index the text in scanned and OCR'd PDF files. Am I missing something? Can anyone else confirm this behavior?
Thanks!
RyanTo clarify:
- From what I've read, iFilters can still be installed, but as Mikael said, they can't override the built-in file format handlers in 2013. 2013 has a built-in handler for PDFs, whereas previous versions required a PDF iFilter for indexing PDFs that have
text content. If one could install the Adobe PDF iFilter in 2013 successfully, it would resolve the issue in this thread, but PDF iFilters don't work in 2013.
- Aquaforest makes a product that OCRs PDF files. That takes an image-only PDF and makes the
file searchable, but it is not an indexer. Rather, it enables an index engine to make a big
collection of OCR'd PDF files searchable via a search engine.
- The built-in PDF handler in 2013 does index native PDFs. It does
not index OCR'd PDF files.
So, that's the issue for which I submitted the ticket to Microsoft. In our case, we don't need to OCR our PDF files--they are already OCR'd. But they don't show up in searches.
(Regarding Aquaforest... I've talked with someone there previously--for a non-SharePoint DMS--and they seem to make a cool product, but I don't have any personal experience using it.) -
Acrobat XI Scanning and OCR Image Exact
When scanning with Acrobat XI how come I am missing the OCR feature for Searchable Image Exact?
It only has clearscan, and Searchable Image....Don't have the scan profile do OCR.

Scanner and OCR don't Work in Acrobat 10.1.7
Up until yesterday, I was able to scan and OCR just fine. Today I realized that e-mailed pdf's did not OCR, instead, I got an "Unknown Error" on every non searchable pdf I was sent. I uninstalled and reinstalled, restarted, etc. and now, not only does the OCR not work, but now whenever I scan from my brother MFC scanner that worked fine yesterday, the scanning processing goes on forever with only black pages showing. For instance, a one page BW scan showed over 10 pages before I exited the process.
Also, e-mailing is much slower.
Interestingly, my Scansnap works fine for OCR (though I'm sure that isn't using Acrobat) and search of pre-OCR'd docs work fine. It's just frustrating that suddenly no docs e-mailed or faxed to me electronically can now be OCR'd.
I've tried printing to acrobat to no avail. I'd hate to have to print and re-scan just for OCR.

Highlight scanned PDF parts and OCR
The problem is:
I have about 500 books scanned and I would need only the important parts.
I have many books that is 4-500 pages and I would need only about 10 of them all together, but into various files.
I have to highlight the required text otherwise I will never found it.
I don't see any meaning to OCR all of the pages, since I need only 1% of the material. OCR takes ages on older PC, and the result needs a really powerful machine (if it is 300+ pages)
Than I would need to make a new PDF that contains only the required part, so I can archive the original file and keep only the shrinked version.
Could I highlight some parts some kind of way (with a tablet for example) and afterwards make the OCR on that selected parts only and error correction in another more powerful machine?
It would be way better to have the possibility to highlight and OCR it "real time" then export it and than I can place it to the specific folder/file so it will be not only organized, but searchable as well.
It saves a big bunch of time for the user (specially on an old PC) and also saves resources (power ect)
Thank you in advance. You can OCR single pages.

Question in the title...
Here is a video of me trying to scan and use OCR on two pages. I simply can't scan pages with the software. I bought it a few months ago in order to archive some paper documents, but I never managed to use it because Acrobat crashes every single time!
Also, here are two crash logs (one being an old one, and the second one being the last one from the video [I forgot to copy the first one from this video]):

I just tried with the HP Scan app and I managed to use some kind of "Adobe Mac PDF Plug-in" in order to convert everything. I had no crash... Here's a video of what I did once every pages were scan :
Also, I retried scanning with Acrobat and I had an other crash...
Yesterday, after posting here, I uninstalled my drivers and HP softwares, and tested with Apple's App Store automatic updates... I also reinstalled HP own drivers and softwares... Anyway... Nothing seems to make this work...
I guess using HP Scan and the "Adobe Mac PDF Plug-in" would be a good workflow. I can easily bring scan documents to PDF/A, but I can't apply OCR. I have to apply OCR once I'm in Acrobat.
However, this workflow is broken, because HP Scan doesn't seem to understand that us, French-Canadian, use Letter format by default, not this unknown A4 format... ... And I don't know how to change to format, neither the default format... The result is that all my scanned documents with HP Scan have A4 sizes...
I guess I'll have to call HP support or sumbit a ticket somewhere for this particular issue...
Also, maybe I should try plugging my printer directly into my Airport Extreme USB port, but I'll have to use Apple-certified manager (drivers? I don't really understand) instead of the one on HP website... Maybe Acrobat wouldn't crash with my printer plugged that way... ... This is complicated... -
Acrobat 9 OCR and "OCR Suspects"
I downloaded the trial for version 9.
Took a poorly scanned page and OCR'd it.
It (expectedly) had a few errors.
Then I selected "OCR Suspects" from menus.
What it should have done is found the "low confidence" results, but
instead, it said no OCR suspects were found.
This used to work in version 8, but I can't get 'OCR suspects' working in V9 trial.
Can anyone confirm if this works in the full version of Acrobat 9 Pro or Standard? It's strange that while I posted to this Adobe forum, there is a response over at objectmix.com. As contributing to this topic from 2 locations seems confusing, I'll carry on here.
Amannagpal76 responded, saying in part that ClearScan in 9 Pro replaces Formatted Text & Graphics. Good to know this. ClearScan does, however, continue the mix. If ocr doesn't work on a character graphic, that graphic will continue to be displayed as such, amidst ClearScan's synthesized type 3 font imitation of the original font. This is most obvious when using the marquee zoom tool.
Aman suggests using the Touchup Text Tool and changing the font to any font installed on one's system. This doesn't work for ClearScan. Selecting a different font in Touchup for a PDF that came via a wordprocessor works fine, but not for a PDF that came via a scan. That, unfortunately, is the only time that ClearScan is used. The error message when I try this states that there's no system font to match the one in ClearScan, and text can't be added or deleted.
ClearScan is remarkable for the small size file it produces. That size can be reduced considerably even further by converting it to the Adobe 7 file format. ClearScan's synthesized font is also remarkable when enlarging the page on screen. Then you can see its true outlines -- rather chewed up in high magnification, but that's OK. It would be nice to extract the font in question and use it on one's system. One downside to ClearScan is that its ocr fails to retain italics when output to RTF and Word.
I have never found a suspect in 9 Pro.
The conclusion from the above is that the hidden text produced by any ocr'ing in 9 Pro can't be corrected. -
I have an IMac and would like to scan and edit scans can anyone suggest a scanner for the Mac
Help. I have an IMac and I want to scan and be able to edit my scans and I have received so many different opinions on how to do this. Buy a separate scanner or buy an all in one that scans but you have to get software to edit. It is really confusing so before I purchase a scanner I need to know if anyone else is doing this and what machine should I buy. Thanks for the help.

Hi and thanks for replying. I have a management company and I would like to scan a document and then be able to go in and make changes if necessary. Some people told me to purchase a Fujitsu 1500 scanner for the Mac which costs about 500.00 but didn't think I needed something that sophisticated and then another opinion was to get an all in one but I need software to edit and no one seems to know what software to purchase. Thanks again for your input.
Get the Fujitsu (Get the M1500, the S1500 is for Windows), it comes with ABBy Fine Reader OCR software that is probably less good than Vuescan but for printed text works just fine, handwriting is a different matter. It is about $500 (look around, under $400 is sometimes possible) don't buy the S version, none of the software will work on a Mac. I've used this scanner fairly often, it's better than the price would suggest. -
Scanning in OCR (optical Character Reading) mode
Dear Sirs,
My printer HP 4507 cannot scan in OCR mode even though I choose the option (HP ENVY 4500 series software and HP 4507 printer) "Document to File" (PDF), output type:Black&White, resolution:200 dpi, Item Type: Document, File Type: PDF.
After scanning process, at the end, even in PDF File type the character are scanned as image only not in the text mode. In another words, I cannot copy the text from PDF file to MS Word processor.
If I am to acquire OCR software first to perform scanning in text mode, where can I obtain this OCR software for HP 4507 printer?
Microsoft Office Document Scanning application cannot recognize or find the HP 4507 Scanner when it was supposed to.
In this matter, a support would be much appreaciated.
With regards,
rakamHello rakam,
The HP Envy 4500 model does not support any OCR functionality withn the HP Software, for that you wlill need any 3rd party software which support a such.
You may use any 3rd part OCR solution to scan as editable text.
If you have Microsoft Office suite there is a good chance the office suite provide this kind of capabilities:
Office 2007 or 2010:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14595/ocr-anything-with-onenote-2007-and-2010/
Office 2003:
http://agsci.psu.edu/it/how-to/perform-ocr-with-microsoft-office-2003-document-imaging
As I understand you experience issues with the solutions above, that may happen due to non-working Windows Services.
Follow these steps which might be applicable for a such, as well ensure the Windows Service as described within Solution 3:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03586087/
For any issues, let me know what connection type you use, as well disable any firewall software is used and try again.

Shlomi

Using Preview to access the scanning software on HP C5180 Photosmart printer/scanner/copier. Trying to use Optical Character Recognition. Want to scan with OCR going to Open Office to edit later. all I can get is a picture that can be moved or resized. When I go to Open Office, I get an error when it is done with the scanning process. Did use TEXT in the scan software.

I thought Preview and Image capture were supposed to be used in scanning with Snow Leopard. Anything else work?
Preview and Image Capture are the built-in solutions. But you are not limited to them. Just as you can browse the web with Firefox or Chrome instead of the built-in Safari, you can scan with any app that works, like the software that came on the disk with the scanner, or a app like VueScan or Silverfast. For OCR, you might get the best results by installing the Mac software that came with the scanner. I know there was definitely Mac software that came with my mom's HP scanner. -
Scan and fill form using Acrobat 6.0
How can I scan hardcopy of a form, save as PDF, open the form in Acrobat 6.0, and fill in the blanks (fields)?
Thanks Dave.
I'm aware that my 6.0 acrobat is way out of date. But I thought I created a fillable form a few years ago using it. But in that case it probably was a PDF going into the process, not a scanned form. Also, I was using vista at the time and now have win 7/64bit.
I'll try the OCR routine but your post suggests what I suspected, that I can't get to where I'm going from here.

Subject: Scan and fill form using Acrobat 6.0

As Acrobat 6 went out of support / obsolete many years ago you'll want to be sure the OS is compatible and the scanner software is compatible.
Use Acrobat's create PDF from scanner feature (review the Help file if needed, the Help PDF was installed when Acrobat 6 was installed).
So, you'll now have that PDF.
But, it is not yet a form PDF.
The scanner output is an image so you have an image / a picture as the PDF page content.
You may want to use Acrobat's OCR feature to provide a hidden layer of renderable characters.
Use Acrobat's form tools to build your form. As Acrobat 6 is long ago gone by I don't recall if it had a "form wizard". Check the Help PDF.
Be well...

Windows Vista, Itunes 10.7, ipod Classic, scan and fix message - why?
I am trying to connect my wife's Ipod Classic to our Windows Vista computer. I get a Scan and Fix Message for the Ipod from Windows. I don't let it scan and click continue. Itunes is frozen and won't recognize the ipod. This has happened since upgrading to Itunes 10.7. Also Itunes is choppy in playing all video content since upgrading to Itunes 10.7.
I have checked system requirements and driver upgrades. So far I have no fix. One site recommended turning off WiFi sync for all devices in Itunes. But of course the device must be connected, and mine won't connect. All my itunes video is languishing. :-(Wi-Fi sync won't apply since you have an iPod Classic and it doesn't contain any Wi-Fi hardware.
To get rid of the Scan and Fix error, see this page: http://www.yourlocaltech.com/resolve-vista-scan-and-fix-error-when-plugging-in-i pod-or-other-devices/
We'll start there for now.

Failed Hardware Scan and other issues E440
Hi all,
This is probably more rant than anything, but I wanted to give a heads up to others too.
I have a ThinkPad E440 that is a year old. From the very first time I turned it on, there have been issues. The first hardware scan (via Lenovo Solution Center - LSC) showed a warning for the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 Local Connection Test. There were also tons of System Events that always show up in the "Configuration History" part of the LSC. You can look at the calendar and tell exactly which days I used the computer because there will be System Events generated each day. Things like app crashes and failed drivers.
In July 2014, I got the first warning for the 16 GB SSD - the SMART Short Self-Test. By February this year it showed as failed for each hardware scan (these were initially set up to run monthly).
Also the whole time I've had it the touch screen would just stop working at some point and I would have to reboot to get it working again.
I finally called Lenovo on March 30th, before my warranty expired. When I called that time, I didn't realize the hard drive failure was the SSD. So they sent me a new 500 GB drive. I also added the other things into the case when I talked to them. For the wireless issue they suggested making sure the driver was up to date. I did this and let them know when I called back that it was up to date and still having the warning. So I called them to tell them to tell them about the wireless and also that I realized it was the SSD having the failure, not the main drive. The first case had already been closed even though none of the other items were addressed.
So they opened another case (this is #2). They said to mail them the laptop since the wireless issue would probably be on the board and it wasn't something I could fix myself. They sent a box with a prepaid overnight shipping label. I was very sick for a few days so I sent it back to them on April 10th (a Friday). Via UPS I saw it was delivered on Saturday. Work was performed on it Monday, April 13th and sent back to me that very day. I received it on April 14th. This part of the service has been excellent - very fast response.
Being in IT, I included a letter with the laptop that outlined the issues that should have been in the case. I also printed the hardware scans and what the system events looked like.
When I got the laptop back, the sheet inside said they had replaced the Speaker because of Distorted Sound. This was not even on the list even though I had noticed it. I didn't even power up the laptop before calling them again - yes, I was furious! Plus our power was out...
So this was noon on the 14th. They opened case #3 and sent me ANOTHER BOX so I could send it back.
After our power came back on the 15th, I powered up my laptop. I opened the browser (I have it set to restore the previous session) and there was a sexually explicit video on YouTube. I opened the other browser and there was a different video on YouTube. So this person was watching YouTube instead of fixing my laptop. I looked through both browser histories and there was quite a bit of activity while my laptop was at the repair center... I ran the hardware scan - still failed and a warning for the wireless. They really hadn't done anything.
I also found two pictures of the repair person in the recycle bin...
So I called back. I was LIVID! They opened another case (this is #4). And sent me ANOTHER BOX. I finally learned the other day that once a case is opened, it cannot be edited or added to at all. Instead, they close the other case and open a new one. I guess their turnaround time for closing cases is excellent! I've never seen a system like that - and I've used a lot of them.
I got a really nice, patient fellow on the line. He took all my info (again). I emailed him the pictures, screen captures of the YouTube videos, the letter I had sent - everything. He entered as much into the new case as he could - he talked to one of the supervisors to make sure he did it right. Somehow he flagged it so that the laptop would get more attention (time) at the repair facility. He also opened a separate case (an escalation ticket?) for a supervisor to call me regarding the person's conduct at the repair facility. He said they would call me that day. (It's now the 25th and I've never heard from anyone)
So, he sent me ANOTHER BOX. I've built up quite a stack of them.
Our power was out AGAIN from the 17th through the 19th (don't get me started).
I noticed a hardware scan had now gotten a failure on the main hard drive. So I called them on the 21st to add this to the case before sending the laptop back. The girl said they can't add anything to an existing case or edit it at all once it's opened. She would have to open a new case and SEND ME ANOTHER BOX. I told her to forget it because I was ready to send it in and didn't want to wait for another box. I also asked for a status on that "escalation case" where the supervisor was supposed to call me. In order to do this she, yes, wait for it, had to open ANOTHER CASE!! So they would know I wanted a status. I'm completely dumbfounded.
So I sent it back on the 21st. This time I practically wiped it. I had already removed all my files the last time, but I had left my bookmarks and browser history intact. I set up a guest logon with admin privileges. I updated my letter and printed off more stuff to include with the box. On one sheet I had only the case number, the serial number and machine type. On another sheet I had "DO NOT SEPARATE THIS PAPERWORK FROM THE LAPTOP" and the case number. I put this sheet on top (The guy on the 15th said my letter and stuff may have gotten separated from the laptop once it was delivered to the repair facility). I used a ton of staples so it would all stay together. I included in my letter the failure on the main hard drive and asked if they could look at it. I wrote about having to open a new case if I wanted to include it.
They received it on the 22nd. A nice gentleman from the repair facility called me that day asking about the password. that. was. written. on the sheet they have you fill out. I told him what happened last time and also mentioned the hard drive failure and asked if he could look into it. He said they would.
I received my laptop back yesterday morning. The sheet that came with it said they had "replaced the following parts to complete the repair of your laptop."
Part Description Symptom
IMAGE Replaced due to engineering change
System board Network card error
Hard disk drive Network card error
ECA-WIRELESS <no symptom listed>
There was also a sheet saying they had installed a factory preload of software and I needed to install Lenovo and Windows updates.
When I booted it up, the first thing I noticed, in the lower right corner was:
Windows 8.1
SecureBoot isn’t configured correctly
Build 9600
I ran a hardware scan. Well, I tried. It stopped part way through and said it finished successfully but most of the tasks showed up as cancelled. I tried to run it again - issues - rebooting ensued. It said the LSC wasn’t available and that I should try again or reboot.
Tried several times. Then got what I guess is the new BSOD - kinder, gentler:
Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just
collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you. (xx% complete)
If you'd like to know more, you can search online later for this error: DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL
Even though the LSC said my Lenovo files were all up to date, I ran the Update. And first I had to download a new version of Update. Then I downloaded all of the Lenovo updates and installed them (there were quite a few). The BIOS update failed. While I was doing the Lenovo downloads, I got a light blue screen but no text (I was out of the room so I'm not sure what happened). Did CTRL-ALT-DEL and it shows only IE and Task Manager as applications that are running. Could not “Switch to” IE. Hitting window key to go to start didn't do anything. So I had to restart.
By 3pm yesterday there were 34 system events in the configuration history.
I ran the hardware scan again after I updated the Lenovo files, and you guessed it! Failure on the SSD (SMART Short Self-Test) and warning on the wireless. Nothing had changed. Except hardware scan is acting different than it did before I sent in the laptop for repairs. When it finishes, it instantly closes and just shows 100% complete. When I click on "see last results" it shows a screen called
Log Information,
Canceled 04/24/2015 n:nn pm
You have not done a hardware test on your computer
And the calendar in LSC only shows the very first hardware scan I did on Friday. Even the hardware scan screen shows the date and time of the last scan. It also shows the error code. In order to see exactly what is failing, I have to sit there and watch it very closely and snap a picture of the screen as soon as the error (or warning) shows up.
When I would try to run Windows update, it would hang up PC Settings. I couldn't even kill it using task manager because it didn't show up as a task. During this, I got a flag saying the firewall wasn't turned on. I tried to turn it on, but clicking on Turn on Windows Firewall didn't do anything. I tried to setup my Microsoft account but that just hung too.
I ended up running Windows Update FOUR TIMES to get all the updates installed. Every time I ran it, it said "Done!" and I would run it again and more would show up. The last time was this morning.
At some point, the error about SecureBoot went away.
Then, I created a bootable BIOS update disk. Following the ReadMe instructions, I went through ThinkPad Setup and verified several values. Of note:
Secure Boot was DISABLED. According to the ReadMe file, this should be ENABLED in Windows 8.1. I enabled it.
Under Startup/Boot, according to the ReadMe that came with the BIOS update, UEFI/Legacy Boot is supposed to be set at UEFI Only for Windows 8.1. Mine was set to "Both". I changed it.
In Startup, OS Optimized Defaults was DISABLED, even though it says right there (and in the BIOS update ReadMe) it should be ENABLED to meet Microsoft Windows 8 Certification Requirement.
After these updates, I flashed the new BIOS.
Then, I ran hardware scan again...
Now I have TWO failures on the SSD: Random Seek Test and SMART Short Self-Test. Great.
In the Event Viewer (that I recently discovered), it says my disk has a bad block. It just says The device, \Device\Harddisk\DR1, has a bad block. I assume this is the SSD...
There are 867 events in the event viewer - Critical, Error, and Warning...
Fifty-two of these are from October 7, 2013 - before my little laptop was a glimmer.
The rest are from when Lenovo had it and yesterday and today.
64 of them are the disk error.
341 are from DeviceSetupManager. 65 of those are from failed driver installs. 69 are for not being able to establish a connection to the windows update service. 64 are from not being able to establish a connection to the Windows Metadata and Internet Services (WMIS).
3 times it's rebooted without cleanly shutting down
60 of them are from Service Control Manager and say The TDKLIB service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.
One of them says {Registry Hive Recovered} Registry hive (file): '\??\C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT' was corrupted and it has been recovered. Some data might have been lost.
16 are warnings that various processors in Group 0 are being limited by system firmware.
12 say the certificate for local system with thumbprint <bunch of hex numbers> is about to expire or already expired.
108 are warnings for failure to load the driver \Driver\WUDFRd for various devices
16 are application errors
One is for the computer rebooting from a "bug check"
15 are for name resolutions timing out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
10 are for SecureBoot being disabled.
14 for services terminating unexpectedly
15 are for WLAN Extensibility Module has stopped
61 are for applications not being able to be restarted because the application SID does not match Conductor SID
12 are for activation of CLSID timing out waiting for the service wuauserv to stop
So, I'll call them on Monday and open. a. new. case (#5?) - but really 7. And get A NEW BOX.

HP Scan and Capture Can't change the location that scanned documents go to
I just upgraded to Windows 8.1. I scanned a word document using HP Scan and Capture and the default location to save files is now "This PC". I can see the folders under "This PC" and can save the document to one of the folders, but I can no longer browse to anything else. If I click on This PC, I have the option to go to OneDrive, This PC or Network.
If I click on Network - I can type in \\mycomputer but it just let's me select a folder. I'm trying to get to an external hard drive and I've tried typing \\external drive, \\f, \\f:, \\f:\
Anyone have any suggestions? I've gone to the preference section of HP Scan and Capture and when I select that I want to change the default location where I save the files, it puts me back to the This PC area.Hello mnmjackson, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are running into issues with your scans save location. I would like to try and assist.
I would recommend creating a new destination folder, and manually type out the full file path.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
