"scanning closed captions" taking forever

I have a ProRes Quicktime file with closed captions embedded.  Each and every time I open a project with this file in it, it scans the closed captions file (says "scanning closed captions for...") and takes approx 20 mins (90 min video). While it is doing this I can't do anything with the video.  It wouldn't be horrible if it just did it the first time like it does with audio but it is every time.  Plus even though Premiere and Quicktime Player says there are closed captions, i have yet to see them in either program even though I've taken the steps to turn them on.  That is a less important issue, I really just want to be able to open it and not take forever.
Is there a setting for this I am missing that would just turn this off?  Anybody else experience this?    I'm using CC.
thanks
Ryan

Sorry, I meant to ask for more info about captions not actually showing up. Yes, once scanning is complete, the captions should be viewable in the Captions panel, the Timeline, and the Source & Program Monitors (if they're set up correctly)
When the clip is selected either in the Project panel or the Timeline, does the Captions panel show the content?
What type of caption(s) are present. If you're not sure, select the clip in the Project panel and check the Caption Stream control at the top of the Captions panel.
Do you have the Closed Caption Display Settings set to match the stream type?
What do you mean the "2nd video track is striped"? In the Timelines, captions should look like the one in the attached image. Note that you have to expand the track to see the caption blocks.

  • Select statement taking forever to run

i am running the select query with condition
    where
    stLetter Like '%abc%'
    out of the table below,
the query is taking forever to run,
    Please advise
    k

Yes that query will take a very long time. First of all, the entire table has to be scanned. But only that, all those long strings have to be scanned. That is, SQL Server first looks at the first character in the string. If that character is not 'a',
it moves on to the next one and so on. If the character is 'a', it lingers there and looks at nest to see if it is 'b' and so on.
Exactly how long time this takes, depends on the collation. If the column is an nvarchar column, or you have a Windows collation, this means that the full rules of Unicode come at play, and they are quite expensive when the entire string needs to be scanned.
If you are looking for an exact match, that is, you don't want to match ABC or ábç, there is a way to speed up the query:
WHERE stLetter COLLATE Latin1_General_BIN2 Like '%abc%'
By using a binary collation, you can get a speed-up by a factor 10.
As long as want a match on a full word or at least the beginning of a word, you should look into full-text indexing. With full-text indexing and using CONTAINS rather than like, you can get very good performance.
If you want to match on a string like 'Here is a word that hasabcinthemiddle of it', there are still solutions, but they are heavy artillery. I've written about then in this book:

  • Captivate 6--closed captioning not advancing

I have been converting files from Captivate 5.5 to Captivate 6 and assumed the closed captioning was advancing.  I had no difficulty in 5.5 with the closed captioning advancing.  In the converted files, the first closed caption appears and remains despite the voice advancing.  I have had no difficulty in the past with closed captioning.  I have ensured the appropriate boxes are checked for closed captioning and that the markers are placed where the closed captioning should change.  I am not using any click boxes or anything exotic.  I just import pptx files, use text to voice conversion, and then move the markers to where the closed captioning should advance to match the change in voices (I use a different voice for each caption).  Some screen shots are:
I am having to convert my files in Captivate 6 since the pdf's are no longer readable with the updates to Adobe Reader.  However, now my students can no longer view the closed captioning unless I save as just one caption per slide.  SInce I have a distance undergraduate course currently underway and another starting this Fall, I would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can offer.  Thanks.

Gotcha -- basically the old non-technical method.

which is going on here in Africa and for our country to bear a good name.
The Airport Authority detected that trunk boxes after been scanned the

United State Dollars. After much investigation we found out that these men
were among those men, spoiling the good name of Africa.
They opened up to us that, they actually work with a Lotto company before
their dismissal and used the opportunity to perpetuate their crimes, they
told us that the funds inside the boxes was won by you, but now they
planned to turn back on you and decided to take the money all to

As I write you this mail now, the three(3) men that were caught are now in
the custody of the Ghana Police Service over here in our country Ghana,
while we are trying to track the others left, because they have proved
to us that they belong to one organization.
That is why we have to reach you by your mail address and name that was

    hand.
Your response will be very much appreciated as soon as you have received

    ¿Me podeis ayudar?
    Muchas gracias de antemano.
    Saludos!

Hello there -- thank you for taking the time to comment here. Set the monitors to whatever closed caption standard you want to see.
    1. Double-click on any caption or sidecar file to see what standard it is set to by reviewing it in the "Captions" panel.
    2. In either monitor, go to the wrench icon, and click on it, go to the "Closed Captioning Display", and then set the display for closed captioning to match your closed caption sidecar or embedded file.
You should then see captions, in 608, 708, or Teletext -- if they are in the caption sidecar or file.
    Take care!

I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • Closed Caption and FCP 5.1.1

Has anyone had success in capturing footage with closed captioning and then making dubs with the closed captioning attached in FCP 5.1?
I ask because it seems that 5.1 is not recording the line 21 info. I've been able to play back a show that I captured from Beta SP before I upgraded and the CC was displayed. Now when I capture the same footage using FCP 5.1 and the same settings as before, the CC info does not show during play back.
    Thanks for any help.

This would be bad. There's no reason that the data shouldn't pass, it's just scan line content, but that doesn't mean there's some new ADA or international digital rights weirdness in 5.1, 5.1.1 or QT7.1+ that's stripping it off.
First we've seen of this complaint so we'd depend on you to do more extensive and carefully designed testing.

  • Text caption in hidden not exported (export /project captions and closed captions)

If you have in your demonstration text caption (ballooons) in
hidden , if you export the project caption to word it's not in
    there...
I use to set some text captions to hidden to ease my life on
slides that contain lots of ballons (and some over other ones) ,
when I export the flash animation, everything is fine , all is in
there (including the "hidden text") .
The trouble is that if i export the "project caption and
closed caption" to Word , the text of captions in hidden is not in
there . (I'm not talking about exporting handsout where you have an
option to export as well hidden slides.)
Exept if I'm wrong, I have not founded any option to manage
the fact to export hidden caption as well (or set all hidden
caption of the demonstration to "not hidden") .
It is really a problem , especially if you have done lots of
movie that needs translation, you have sent the "exported caption"
to the translation service and now you realise that some parts are
    missing .... ;(

    Hi There,
When you export the doc file as Project Caption and Closed Caption. if you change the fonts and style in Doc file and the reimported it in Captivate. It will accept those changes and you can see those changes in Captivate with the same fonts settings.
    Thanks

  • Closed Captioning not showing up at specified In / Out points

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded to a trial of 7.2.1 (I'm a *long* time CS user) and am having an issue with closed captioning that's got me pulling my hair out. Upon importing a .scc file and inspecting it in the captions tab, I have all the captions I'm expecting at the proper timecodes (for example if I look up the start of a line in the program window the start timecode matches the "In" timecode listed in the Captions tab).
However upon playing the timeline and turning on Closed Caption display - the captions are not displaying (nor disappearing) at the in/out timecodes listed in the caption tab. They're showing up (roughly) seven seconds later at the beginning of the program, and over 11 seconds late by the end of the program.
Does anyone have the foggiest idea how to resolve this? I guess it's possible it's just a player issue and the issue will correct itself on output, but that's not really comforting. I could do what I need on this job by renewing my license for some other software, but Premiere would be a more versitile use of my limited software upgrade budget - but only if it can actually do the job properly.

    Hi Mark and monstremoi,
With all the fiddling I've been doing in raw captioning files the fact that I didn't just try increasing the hight of the track is completely rediculous. Lo and behold, there are the handles! Once I could actually see the captions in the track I noticed something interesting - that the .scc and .xml files are being interpreted quite differently.
If I take the same caption source file and output one xml and one scc and lay them on top of each other, this is what it looks like:
The XML is starting immediately at timecode 0, even though the first start time should be 4:06 (weirdly the scc is actually starting at the right time code in this test, something it's refused to do previously).
If I manually set the offset of the first caption by forwarding the xml caption track to 4:06 we get this:
*This* XML track seems to play out synchronous with the program albeit with some odd formatting (it doesn't appear to be reading any of the font positioning information from the timed text file, it's just playing everything top frame, justified left.
Already though up above you can see though that although the SCC stars at the right timecode, it's starting to drift out of sync less than 30 seconds in - which doesn't make any sense when both have been output from the same 29.97 timebase source.
Monstremoi - to answer you questions, no I've not done any captioning work in premiere pro previously. I actually didn't even know it was a feature until I read about the improvements in CC. Most of our captioning files come from Annotation Edit (zeitanker.com). If they're not prepared in AnnotationEdit / AnnotationTranscriber, we usually do some conversion work through it before outputting (usually to set offsets or whatever if we're adding presentation cards or something).
Happy to send you files to pull apart - although I'd rather not post them as a forum d/l link. Do you have an e-mail I can send them to?

  • New to OSMF - have several questions (closed captions, tutorial, etc), please help!

    Hello,
I came across OSMF this week and am extremely curious to learn more about this for my job and personal work/knowledge. If any of these questions could be answered I will be ever-so grateful!! Thank you.
    1) Anyone know of or have any information or tutorials or plug-ins on how to make OSMF videos work with closed captions for single or a multi-video player gallery for each video? (captions - this is very important for my job)
    2) Does anyone know of any good and easy to understand (I'm mid-level in AS3) tutorials and/or source files on how to build an OSMF player preferably in Flash?
    3) I know Flash Builder (Flex) some, but am better with Flash (CS4/5), but a lot of what I see is for Flex... what is preferred for OSMF - Flex or Flash or it doesn't matter?
    4) I searched Amazon.com, but couldn't find - are there any books for OSMF?
Sorry I posed this in Developers also, but unsure which is appropriate for my questions. Thank you, again.

    Hi, Duane!
This may help with your questions re: captions..
    http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/osmf.adobe/index.php?title=Captions
As for tutorials, we've got some links to ones created by members of the community here:
    http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/osmf.adobe/index.php?title=osmf.adobe:Community_Port al
And, as far as OSMF books, there aren't any third-party ones of which I'm aware. You can download a PDF of Adobe's OSMF Dev Guide here (the PDF link is at the upper right):
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/OSMF/1.0/Dev/index.html
Or, you can view the very same content in topic-by-topic form at the wiki in the links above.
Best of luck with your endeavors!

  • Free / open source Closed Captioning software?

I'd like to add closed captions to a feature film I produced. I understand the difference between closed captioning (which is embedded in the video and decoded by the TV) and DVD subtitles, and I would like to add real closed captioning.
Is there any free / open source Mac-compatible closed captioning software I can use to add captions to my feature film and create a .cc file for importing into DVD Studio Pro?
I'm more than comfortable with steep learning curves and X11 interfaces. If I have to use a text editor and timecodes, that's fine too. I just need that .cc file to add true closed captioning to my video, and I don't have the dough for commercial CC software.
    Thanks!

my company does offer closed captioning as a service, Kelly is correct when he says the software is very expensive. as far as creating a .scc file with a text editor, i don't believe it is possible but i may be wrong. when opening a .scc or .cc file in a text editor, it does look like a bunch of "gobbledygook". but the .cap file that is used to create the .scc or .cc file looks a bit more manageable and could possibly be created without captioning software, again i may be wrong and have never attempted to do it. but say you could do it, you could save a bunch of money by creating the .cap file and giving it to someone who has the software to convert it to .scc or .cc. if that seems overwhelming and want to job it out, you could save some money by transcribing the video yourself which is a significant part of the cost when outsourcing. here is a sample of what a .cap file looks like:

  • Movies playing in iTunes will not show closed captions

I have purchased several movies from the iTunes store. They all have Closed Captioning listed in the store description. I need Closed Captioning because I have hearing loss and even with my hearing aids, I cannot hear all the dialogue in movies.
In my iTunes app, I opened Preferences-->Playback and checked the box for "Show closed captioning when available." Then I play the movie in iTunes. No captions. I click on the Controls menu for Audio & Subtitles. It's grayed out.
I go to the .m4v file in Finder and open the movie with Quicktime to see whether I can get captions that way. No captions. I check the View menu for Show Closed Captioning. It's grayed out.
At this point I'm thinking these movies do not really HAVE captions, despite what the store description said. However, this proves to be wrong because I turn on my TV and start up my Apple TV 3. I select "Movies" and then "Purchased" and find these movies. When I play these movies via the Apple TV, they all show up on the TV screen with the captions working perfectly.
So, what gives? I've spent hours searching the internet for a solution, but all I can find is that the selection I've made in iTunes preferences *should* make the captions show up in iTunes. I'm stumped. I want to play the movies on my computer in iTunes (or in Quicktime) so that I don't have to be at my house in front of my TV in order the enjoy them. Is there any way I can make these movies play in iTunes with the captions showing? Can anyone make any suggestions? I'd be very grateful if someone could help me achieve this goal.

I have same problem with my son's iPod Touch running iOS 5.1.1.  I set "explicit" to off, but then many songs we purchased on iTunes that are labeled as "clean" do not show up on his iPod Touch. If I set "explicit" to on, they do show up.

  • Open with "Closed Captioning" on, or always show CC

I want to have my projects start with "closed captioning". I tried to down load the little SWF file, from the third party, recommended elseware, but it doesn't seem to work. It says it was made for Captivate 4, and I'm using 5.
Any help? Is there another way to set CC as the default?

Robert, I think the issue here is that after you insert the new slide and drag it to the first of the presentation, you then defeat the purpose of adding the new slide because you then configure THAT slide to execute the advanced action to set the variable.
The point of introducing a new slide is to introduce a delay that gives the presentation time to "settle" before turning on the Closed Captioning.
The bottom line is that you insert the slide, move it to the beginning and configure the timing for perhaps .1 or .2 seconds. THEN execute the action on the SECOND slide.
Give that a try and see if things improve.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Importing swf file with skin and closed captioning problems

I created a flv file in Preimere and I pulled it into flash to create close captioning.  When I publish it, it creates a swf file that I can open up on its own and it has the skin with the button to push to show the closed caption.  When I try to bring that file into captivate, it doesnt bring in the skin and it just automatically shows the captions.  How do I get it to bring the skin in with it?

Are you seeing this problem when you preview you project. or only after you publish it? If it is when you publish, is it in both the local version and/or in the web version?
Also, which version of Flash Catalyst? 1.0 or 5.5.?

  • How to change the closed caption display in cc 2014

Hi since the new CC update they the option to change the closed caption seems to be removed. Currently it is set to teletext level 1. But i would like to change this to CEA-708. In the older version of cc u could change this by clicking the program monitor settings but this option is no longer available.
The adobe site stats Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Closed Captioning  "You can select the captioning standard for a caption clip loaded in the Source Monitor. In the Source Monitor panel pop-up menu, select Closed Captioning Display > Settings. For example, you can select CEA-608, CEA-708, CC1, CC2, and so on. You can toggle the Closed Caption display on and off."
But this button is now gone.
    Any help?

The button icon you show above is for enabling/disabling closed captions display. To access the Program Monitor's Settings menu, click the wrench icon to the left of the Duration display.
If you want the Closed Captioning Display button back, click the plus sign in the monitor's bottom right corner and drag the button to the button bar.
