Scanning Family Photos

Hi all
I'm guessing others have been down this path.
I've been given a few boxes of photos by my Mum and my brother and I have figured that we need to get them onto to dvd so our children actually know something of their origins, being somewhat rootless immigrants.
I tried the [mac ad slurp sound with hand gestures] but the photos are still in box and there's nothing on my computer. (Sorry couldn't resist that. Hurl stones as appropriate)
Seriously what have others found as the fastest way to get multiple photos into iPhoto given we don't have many of the negs.
What scanners have people found the best and fastest, because time is an issue before Mum can't tell us who's in the photos.
Or what other technologies work well
Kind Regards
Eric

Scan time is a function of the resolution selected. To scan at screen resolution, 72-90, will be much quicker that to scan at a print resolution like 300 dpi or above. The interface, USB 2 vs 1.1 will affect the overall time. If there were a FW scanner that would be even faster as far as the transfer of data but the scanning is still dependent of format, i.e. B/W or color, and resolution.
If I was looking for a high resolution scanner it would be the resolution available and whether it was an optical scanner or a LED scanner. I don't do a lot of scanning so I went with the Canon which is a LED type but suffices for my needs. But an optical would be what you want to optimize image quality.
If speed is really of the upmost importance the a drum scanner would be what you'd want but those are expensive!

  • Question about the Canon 8400F and scanning large photo albums

    Hi,
Besides scanning negatives, slides, and individual photos, I will be visiting one of my relatives who is the "keeper" of some big family photo albums. If I recall correctly, the albums are pretty large and there are quite a few pictures on each page. I think (?) the pictures are permanently on the pages. Will this be a problems scanning the pictures in?
I think the albums are about the width of a full size keyboard and about twice the heigth.
Any help here would be appreciated. I do hope the pages can be individually removed one at a time from the album, but I do think that the pictures are permanently attached to the pages.
    Thank you very much
Also, how good is the instruction booklet that comes with the scanner?
    Thanks again

Will this be a problems scanning the pictures in?<<<</div>
Your only problem will be in positioning the album on the scanner. The included CanoScan software allows you to scan in multiple photos and the software automatically separates them.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 not allowing edits to scanned jpeg photos

I am trying to scan some old family photos using my Epson WF-3250, and I want to edit them using iPhoto.  They seem to be fine when I open the files in iPhoto (ver. 9.5.1), but when I try to edit them (rotate, crop, etc.), I get the following message. "Image cannot be edited. The original format is not supported"
Seriously?  How can a jpeg file not be supported?  Is anyone else having this problem?  And if so, does anyone have a solution?

Yes - 1200 DPI is too large - that would be a 9,600x 12,000 image - not sure what the limit is (or if there is an exact limit) but that is GIANT!
Even at 800 DPI the image will be 6,400 x 8,000
I normally size scans so I can print  8x10 prints at up to 300 DPI so for an 8x10 image scanning at 300 DPI is all you need (2,400 x 3,000)

  • Family Photos for Posterity

I am scanning thousands of slides and photos into my computer and arranging them in chronological order and by subject to save to dvds. I also have several thousand photos in iPhoto that I want to archive.
I want to burn folders of the sorted photos onto archival quality dvds that will be compatible with both Windows and mac (and hopefully other systems that might come along in the future). The dvds will be stored in our safe deposit box.
What media is best for this project? What brand? DVD-R or DVD+R or something else?
Am I correct that I should put the images into appropriate sized folders, insert a disk, and use the finder to burn a hybrid disk by dragging the folder to the disk when it appears on the desktop? What is the maximum size the folders can hold to fit on a regular 4.7 GB disk?

I agree with Beverly on the 50 year issue. There may not be any equipment left to read the disks after that length of time. Remember 8-track audio tapes or Beta video? It's something that will have to be updated periodically to the newest technology. In 10 years what took 10 DVDs to hold might only take one of whatever is developed.
    What I've done with the family photos is the following;
1 - for each year I burn all of the image files from all immediate family members to DVDs in folders by Month and distribute to each family member
2 - create iDVD slideshows of each year by month, adding music and all the bells and whistles, and burning one for each family member.
This makes it very easy for them to play the iDVDs on their TV to watch the family history. Right now I'm up to DVD #23 or 4 (and a year and 1/2 behind - getting slow in my old age). Then it's up to the family members to keep their files safe and sound. With 4 copies floating around one is bound to be good and can be copies for the others.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Digitizing a family photo album and its captions

I use CS4 on the Mac. I'm looking for an efficient solution for digitizing family photo albums. I know how to scan and fix the scanned image, if necessary. I know how to organize photos in Adobe Bridge. What I'm clear on is how to create captions for the photos that will will be permanantly linked to the photo files and can be output for on-screen or print albums/galleries.
Also, what is a good tool for creating output? InDesign is an obvious possibility for print; but I was wondering if there is some sort of plug-in or companion product for PS designed specifically for generating albums and slideshows.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Bridge?
Captions could be added in the metadata (File > File Info).
Printing that might be a bit difficult, though.

    Hi @Mamusworld,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you want to scan multiple photos on your HP Photosmart c309 as individual files, but the box to allow it is greyed out. I am happy to help!
This sounds as if there is a driver/software issue with your printer software. I would recommend the following:
Uninstall the software. Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Clean boot the computer. How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Re-install using the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Hope this helps, and have a great day!

  • All my family photos for the last 6 years are disappeared...

    Hi,
    Can anybody help me?
I am in complete chock fearing that all my family photos from the last 7 years are lost!
I have had ALL my family photos in the Adobe Stater Edition. Lately, I have been requested to register to get an unlock code every time I wanted to see photos or download new photos. I have tried to register but has been informed that the Adobe Starter Edition does not exist anymore. Yesterday, I therefore loaded all my photos into Picasa. I worked with the photos for about one hour - and then they suddently all disappeared. I seached for the photoes everywhere but they are completely gone... they are not on the hard disk at all. How is that possible? The photos were located on the hard disc in the "Picture folder" in a subfolder named "Adope". This subfolder was created automatically, years ago, when I started to load photo into the Adope Starter Edition. This subfolder is now empty - how is that possible? If I now start up the Adobe Starter Edition I get the usual "unlock message" - but behind the message I can see some of my photos but maybe this is just a "dead" bacground from my last attempt to get the unlock code?
What should I do - can anybody please help me? I am willing to upgrade to whatever type of Adobe product it requires to get the last 7 years of my family life back.
And yes... I did a full back-up of my photos app. 12 months ago... I looked for it yesterday in complete panic... it is gone... we had a burglary last summer... and yesterday I realized that it has been stolen.
ALL - ALL!! the photos of my two wonderful girls growing up... sitting in the Danish summer fields with floral wreaths on their head... I cannot believe it... I fell I have lost their childhood.
    Please help me...
    Kirsten

In Picasa, look under to Tools menu, under Options, and at the bottom, it shows 'Save Imported Pictures in...'; look at where it is saving files, then look for a folder called Picasa at that location; could be that it moved all your files to there.

  • I used an AppleTV to display on a TV 30,000 digitized family photos stored on my iMac.  When I opted to use iCloud, I lost ability to show my photos.  All I could show are canned Apple photos.  I am willing to pay for iCloud storage.

How do I display on AppleTV screen saver my library of 30000 digitized family photos?  I am glad to pay for extra iCloud storage.

iCloud does not include a feature like the old MobileMe Gallery.
Photo Stream does work on the AppleTV, but will only show the last 1000 photos taken and synced to iCloud. You can't create user-defined galleries.
Until June 30th 2012 (when MobileMe closes down), you can still access your MobileMe Galleries, by logging in using your [email protected] MobileMe AppleID and password. That still works for now.
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a long-term solution for your particular usage.

  • What is new/special about Family Photo Stream in iOS 8?

When it was announced at WWDC, I was hoping Family Photo Stream would automatically upload all photos from all of my family's devices into one photo stream that would then synchronize across all the other devices, including iPhoto 2013 on my iMac.
But it seems each family member has to manually add photos to the Family Photo Stream.
In iOS 7, it was already possible to create a shared photo stream, add your family members, and enable them to post to it.
So what, if anything, does iOS 8's Family Photo Stream do that is different?

Yes, as far as I can tell, after enabling Family Sharing and my wife and I now having different iCloud accounts on our phones, Photo Stream does not appear to be shared between us any more. It appears that only the "Family Photos" album is shared, and we have to manually add photos and videos to that.
One of my favourite features of sharing the same iCloud account across multiple devices was that Photostream synced all our family's photos across all devices, no matter who took them. This appears to be a missing feature in Family Sharing for now -- perhaps Apple wasn't aware this was something people were doing?

  • We have an iMac OSX Lion.I received a CD with photos on it by a friend of mine. She scanned the photos to her computer and gave the disk to me . I installed it yesterday. I can hear the disk spinning but no pictures come up. What would be the problem?

We have an iMac OSX Lion.  I received a CD with photos on it from a friend of mine. My friend scanned the photos to her computer and gave the disc to me. I can hear the disc spinning but the pictures aren't coming up to view. Before having the iMac I had a Dell computer.  I was able to view the photos at that time. Is there something I can do so I can view them on my iMac? Thank you.

The information I see in disk utility is the following: MacIntosh HD superdrive. 1TBST31000528A S Media

  • How do you control iCloud.  It uploads music and pictures that i  have deleted and it continues to feed them to my TV. Example, I took a picture of an item in a store that I was considering purchasing.. It is now in I cloud with our family photos

How do I edit the content in iCloud?  It uploads everything.  If I take a photo of an item in a store that I am interested in, when I come home it will immediately show up on all of my devices.  When I delete it from all of my devices, it remains in icloud only to show up in family photo shows on our television when we have family visiting.  You should be able to delete pictures and music from icloud.  Does anyone know if it is possible and if so how?

If you delete a photo from the photo stream album on your device, it should also be deleted from photo stream and all other devices connected to your photo stream.  If you're running windows 8, perhaps the problem relates to that as Apple has not indicated that it supports iCloud syncing for windows 8 yet.

  • Time Machine wiped out my entire hard drive with all of my family photos

I am a new mac owner and i hooked up my WD external hard drive to my new imac. i was familiarizing myself with the applications and i clicked on time machine. it asked me to select a drive to use for the backup and i of course selected my external hard drive. Then it said that it was going to format the drive and i said NO WAY! i canceled out of the application immediately because this drive has all of my family photos. well low and behold, i cant access any of the files on the hard drive and when i hook it up to a pc, it doesn't recognize it at all. when i mange the device in the device manager it shows that it is there and it says that it is empty! SO MUCH FOR TIME MACHINE AND CANCELING THE FORMAT! I hope this saves someone from losing all of their photos. i dont know what time machine did, but i cant even get the hard drive working any more.

The files are very likely still there and recoverable. However, *it is very important that you do not use the drive until you recover your files* or you risk overwriting the data.
FileSalvage is a recovery tool that says it can recover files from a FAT32 formatted disk:
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
You could also use a PC file recovery program but I'm not at all familiar with any of those.
You should report this incident to Apple Feedback and/or telephone them.

What format are they? Tiif? Jpeg? You can compress them with a lot of apps - including Preivew and just about any graphics editor out there. I'm not sure that 45mb would crash iPhoto thogh, are yo sure that's the cause? I know that some folks have mentioned pixel dimensions causing issues, as can color profiles.
