Scanning film negative at 24 or 48 bits?

When scanning 35mm color negtive film to a jpeg,  and my epson v500 scanner can do it in 48 or 24 bits.  Is 48 bits really needed for good quality

The web has a river of information.  But please note there is no one size fits all.  Like I said before, what quality of scan you need is determined by the quality of the original, the use to be made of the output, and the size of file you are confrotable with.
If you want the highest potrential quality you would scan at the max, and you would not save to jpeg, as it is a lossy format.  But the file size may be enormous.
A lower resoltion scan will take up less space and the scan may not show any difference in quality than a higher resoluton scan.  That is why I suggested you try various options, enlarge the output and compare,  and see what fits best for your situation.

  • How do scan strip negatives via my Epson 4990 scanner using Image Capture since upgrade to OS X Mavericks

Hello Everyone. OK I upgraded to OS X Mavericks without thinking that by doing this would stop me using my Epson 4990 scanner as no driver / software currently available - OK my fault. Anyway as Epson have not yet provided an update (yet?), all advice being recieved is use "Image Capture" for the time being. I have tried this along with using the "Help" files but unfortunately dont seem to be be any assistance. In simples terms I just wish to scan film negative strips (and transparencies) but it dont seem to be possible. Could any member advised how to get solve this problem as I am in the middle of a major scanning exercise with the worst case senario that I wil have to revert to my Windows based laptop to carry on and temporary reduntant my iMac which defeats the point of the exercise. Thank you in advance (hopefully)

Replay I received from Epson today:-
"In response to your email, we unfortunately do not have any update available for your model at present. We have no confirmed date for this but as far as we are aware this is likely to be in the next two weeks"

  • Can I scan 110 film negatives on the canoscan 9000f?

I am contemplating buying the canoscan 9000f, but I will need to be able to scan 110mm film format. Can I do this on the canoscan 9000f? I have seen an adapter for that film size on ebay and amazon (oddly enough, cannot find it on Canon), but the price is prohibitive. Can I scan negatives without any holder - in other words, just lay the film directly on the glass platen and scan the negatives in that way?

I found a useful article online called:  "How to Scan Odd (Non-Standard) Size Film Negatives on a CanoScan 8800F Scanner -Made Easy".
      Here's the URL:  http://askjoanne.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Scan-Odd-Non-Standard-Sized-Negative-on-a-CanoScan-8800F
I have a Canoscan 9000f, and I guess it is similar to the 8800f.
Under the scanner lid, remove the white and black background panel.  Center the 110 negative on the glass and close the lid.
When you get into the Canon MP Navigator software, you want to Scan and Import -- Film.  Click on the little box that says "Use the scanner driver."  Then click on "Open Scanner Driver."  That sends you to the ScanGear Advanced Mode settings.
The first time I did this, I could not understand why many choices were grayed out.
You have to click on PREVIEW    !!
When I did this, I got an error message:  "The film could not be detected.  Please check if the Select Source is correct, or confirm if the film is set correctly and execute preview again.  Otherwise, please switch off the thumbnails view mode."
That last part was the key  -- the thumbnails switch is in the upper left corner of the screen.  There's a little Slide icon and a little Negative icon.  Click on this "switch", and when the Negative icon shows up in color, you are set to go.
Now, when you click on PREVIEW, your 110 negative should appear.  Now just "crop" the 110 negative:  move the cursor over one corner of the negative, hold down the left mouse button, move to the diagonally opposite corner, release the mouse button.
Delete the black box (if there is one)  in the upper left of the scan area.
Now click on SCAN.  When it finishes scanning, you can choose to "Retouch and save the image (Close ScanGear dialog)".  When you close ScanGear, you will wind up back in the MP Navigator.
In the Scan Complete box, click on exit.
Then SAVE your scan under a new name (not IMG).
Then you can Open the image in a good photo-editing software.  I use PhotoShop Elements.  There you will need to crop each individual photo on the 110 strip, and save each photo under a different name.
I think you can use the same technique on other sized negatives.
A good article about negative sizes is: "About Film Formats - Slides, Negatives, & Transparencies"  at www.pearsonimaging.com .

  • Problems with scanning color film negatives

I am using an Epson 4990 flatbed scanner to scan color film negatives. When I scan 120 film I can during the scanning process that the entire negative has been scanned, but in thumbnails and then in the final scan the picture (image) is smaller than the negative. It is as if the software is cropping the picture. Is there anyway to ensure that the scanned picture is the same size as the negative?

    Hello @JGFWilks!
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I can see that the software is not available for your Scanjet G4050 on Mac 10.10.  Although the the software is not available ImageCapture should still allow the option for "auto selection"in the dropdown should be "detect separate items" It should then detect your 30 separate photo negatives.  When you are in image capture you will want to ensure you press "show details" at the bottom of the window to get all the options.  You may also want to try changing the resolution to a higher DPI to see if that helps when scanning the negatives.
Thanks again for posting on the HP Forums!  Enjoy the rest of the day!

  • Recommendations for film / negative scanner

I am planning on the (massive) project of scanning back slides and negatives into digital format. From research so far it looks like a Nikon scanner may work best as dedicated film scanner. Looks like flatbed scanners would not produce as good a quality - but maybe they would be okay for non-commercial family pictures that I'll be working with. Anyone with any recommendations? I would like to do the job only once (of course) and ideally have the ability for scanner to self-feed through the few images on each negative and not have to preview / rescan each image. Any help appreciated!
    -Bob

    Bob:
Just remember when you're finished with scanning the negatives and slides you'll have a nice door stop. I did that with a Polaroid Sprintscan LE. I did scan a lot of slides but it was useless when I finished. I just bought a Canon 8600F scanner that does slides and film strips. The newer flatbeds do a good job in scanning those items and will still be useful when you've run thru your slides and filmstrips.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Colour Film Negatives

I have scanned some colour film negatives. As you will know, these have an orange overlay of the image.
What is the best way to convert the scan to a positive colour image?
I have CS6. The scans were done using my camera with macro lens illuminated from behind via a white opague screen by a TTL flash gun. The scans are saved as Nikon Raw Files. The negatives are 2.25" square and in most cases are on Kodacolor Film dating from around the 1960's.
I have used this technique very successfully to copy monochrome negatives and colour slides.
I know the invert does not work. The nearest I can get is to 'invert' then apply the 'auto tone' but the colours come out garish and not right.
I also have a Nikon Coolscan V which can scan colour negatives and produce correct colour but only with 35mm film.
    Can anyone help me?

Thank you for that. I and my many photographic friends just call it shooting in RAW and in Adobe Photoshop we just refer to it as the RAW converter.
I also thank Adobe for their kind consideration of their customers. To think that having spent something like £600 on software that is unable to perform what I would expect to be a regular task amongst photographers and then to suggest they go and buy a quality scanner at what? Another £300 or more. I find very disappointing.
I hope somebody from Adobe sees this comment because I note that it is virtually impossible to contact them direct. If one goes for support one is either directed into FAQs or this Community Chat Room.
As you may gather, I am not a very happy customer.

  • Photos look like film negatives after color correcting

I tried following Scott Kelby's instructions for color correcting digital images in PSE 10. I was entering the values he gave for the R,G and Blue channels. I got off track and probably missed a step. Anyway, now when I try any of the auto correction features, my images look like film negatives and not like a regular digital image. How can I re-enable the auto correction features (levels, color correction, etc.) ?

Make an levels adjustment layer and Alt (option) click on the Auto button in the levels dialog.
Then in the Auto Color correction Options set the RGB values for
    Shadows RGB 0,0,0
    Midtones RGB 128,128,128
    Highlights RGB 255,255,255
    Then check Save as Defaults

  • Scanning Monochrome Negatives

Starting a project, pulling out my hair.
I'm scanning Monochrome negatives from the 1930's w/a Canon 8800F Scanner. I have a note somewhere to scan B/W negatives as Color for iPhoto.
If anyone has this scanner, in Advanced Scan Mode, does this mean I select the Source or the Color Mode (in the Input Settings) as color?
Or do I select both as color?
And then do I use 2400 dpi as Output Resolution and Flexible as Output Size?
With that I get about a 6MG or 7MG file.
Any other suggestions will be appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

Was Photoshop Elements for Mac bundled with your scanner? It was with my older 8600F scanner. If so then you can use it from within iPhoto as follows:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds.
Once you have PSE setup as your 3rd party editor you can open any file and use the Image->Mode menu option to see what the color mode of the image is. You'll see a √ next to it.
If you did have PSE bundled with the scanner what version is it?

  • Image Capture and Scanning Film?

So I recently purchased an Epson v600 photo scanner for scanning film. However, the Espon scanning software does not work on the iMac Lion osx 10.7.
Epson directed me to update Image Capture on mac to scan film, but I'm not even finding how to do it. In the help manual it says there is a "Mode" module that says whether I'm scanning a document or trancparancy but I can't seem to find it.
Does anyone know how to get this module so I can scan film in Image Capture?!
    Thank you!

The only thing that I've been able to do is manually (and of course time consumingly) scan each page and then combine the pages as a single PDF after it's all over.
I'm not entirely convinced Apple gives two squats about customers at this point. Haven't you noticed how their support keeps getting pared back and diminished? You can't even get a support rep on the weekend now. But they can post outrageous profits. Someone, somewhere, is getting shafted for those kinds of profits. I think it's both the Chinese workers, and all of us customers. I even found out recently that they don't support "obsolete," hardware, even if it's a fault they know about (specifically a bad battery in the case I'm referencing).
Frankly, it is my opinion that Apple has forgotten that their real product is their customer service.
In order to get this fixed, you ~might~ be able to help make enough noise in their support department through their, "report a bug," page. I'm sure someone they don't pay well reads those messages... eventually.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
I no longer have high expectations, or hopes, relative to Apple. And even though I'm in the market for a new computer, I'm really checking my options for something that isn't an Apple.
Please, before you declare that I'm just a troll, make note that I have three towers, three minis, and two MacBook Pros to my name. I have, on average for the past ten years, spent 4.5k on each of my primary computers from Apple (every year and a half or so). It was the customer service that I loved about this company, more than anythihg else. Now they just look like greedmongers who can't even get a a loop counter right.
PLEASE give them feedback relative to this isssue!

  • Unable to scan and communicate with scan function C6180 Vista Home Premium 64 bit Printing works

I have an all in one C6180 Photosmart connected by wireless network (infrastructure). Network consists of 2-laptops, 1-Desktop and the printer.  Everything works from HP solution Center on the Compaq laptop and the Dell desktop both running Windows XP. My newest laptop is a Dell studio XPS core2   2.4ghz running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I am unable to scan from the Dell Laptop using HP Solution Center nor can I scan from the printer buttons to the laptop. Solution Center opens I select "scan document" and immediately get an error message "unable to communicate with scanning device. Likewise with the copy function.  The laptop does recognize the printer though and I am able to print wirelessly.  All functions work when connected via USB so I believe the printer is fine.  I have been working with this problem since I bought the printer in 2007. I spent many hours reading hundreds of internet posts, talking by phone with HP and via e-mail support from HP.  I became frustrated and gave up for awhile but now I want to see if there are any new solutions that I don't know about. I downloaded full feature software and drivers for the 6180 from HP and performed various levels of uninstall (L1, L2, L3, L4). I also cleaned the registry with ccleaner, windows disk cleanup and manual registry deletions when allowed per HP. I have checked port settings, tried stopping HP functions is Services.Msc. The Digital monitor is currently running, however no scanner communication-computer to 6180 and no scanner communication 6180 to computer. I can print and fax from computer wirelessly. I have ran the HP diagnostic utility separately and it appears everything is fine, connection IPaddress etc. During install when prompted to run test it says the printer is connected to the network. I have tried to add a device to the network after install and get the message no wireless devices found. The scanner does not appear under Cameras and Scanners in control panel. Nor will it find the scanner when I try to add device. Firewalls and antivirus have been turned off. Still can't make it work. Suggestions please.

Sorry about your pain.  L3 uninstall is what I recommend.  Re-install from hp.com and this time, with the printer properly attached it should flow OK.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Acrobat XI Standard ramdomly crashes scanning from Fujitsu fi6770a on Win7 64 bit

I have a user that a couple of time a day has Acrobat crash when the are scanning 8 1/12x11 2 sided B&W documents in the document feeder and says "Adobe Acrobat has stopped working".  Screen shot and dump file link attached.
    https://app.box.com/s/z60rw8gwe4d9pkk7wh0g

I have been dealing with the same problem, but we are using Win7 32 bit system and the same scanner, since prior to October 2013.  (I only know this because I joined this forum to find an answer and have yet to do so.)
How is it that a product that is so costly only works about 30% of the time.  Trust me when I say, if there was another program that was compatible with the other software I used, the company I work for would no longer use Adobe.  I'm having to scan my documents anywhere from 2-7 times before I can get Adobe to stop crashing.  Sometimes I end up giving up and hoping that the next day will have better results (it generally scans fine for about 30 minutes and then crashes consistently).
I also have different scanning stations, with different users and we are all experiencing the same thing.
Has anyone found a solution?  I'm beyond frustrated and have tried every "fix" listed on this forum.

  • Convert a film negative to a positive file

    Hello All,
I am photographing 2 1/4 negatives with a CANON 50D and macro lens. Then in Photoshop CS3 I was looking for the filter to convert the negative film file into a positive file so I can work on it with Adobe and then print in on my Canon printer.. I have tried to sample the orange base color and take that out and then invert and then increased the contrast curve. Can not get it right... Is there a way to do it with Adobe or is there a plug in to do this. Or is there a program on line to do this?
    Thank You.
    Robert Gladden.

Here's a curves based procedure for inverting color negatives that works
    reasonably well:

  • Sorting photos from  scans of negatives

Ok, I took about 20 rolls of negatives to a photo lab and the tech did'nt really pay too much attention to the order of the strips in each roll.
I have sucsessful in seperating the photos in appropriate rolls and then dating each roll.
I also know i can change date of the pictures either individually or by batch, however the ORDER of the photos is completes arbitray. I have the original prints with the print number on the back of them. I additionally know I can assign individual times to each picture in batch, but the order they are in is all wrong within each roll.
Question: is there an easier way to re-order the photos other than assigning individual sequential times.
In other words, what I'm hoping is there is some sort of "jelly mode" where by you can drag the photos into any order you wish , and then have the dates assigned with a one minute differential based on the new dragged order.
    Please help.
If you are a Mac Software designer for iPhoto, please include "jelly mode" in the next update/upgrade.

I don't think this is what you want, but...
You can set View>Sort Photos>Manually, but when I do that it sorts the whole library that way. It would be nice to be able to sort within the film rolls manually.
    Karen
Edit: If you do get the photos in the order you want manually, you can go to Photos>Batch Change>Set Date and then you can set the date for the first photo and the time interval between each photo. I suppose you could make an album out of each roll, and sort manually within the album, then do the batch change.
Hopefully, someone else has a better idea on how to do this.

  • Recommendations - flatbed (& film/negative) scanner, under £100??

So far I have narrowed the choices down to the CanoScan LiDE 200 Scanner.
Does anyone have any other recommendations, or experiences with the above?
    Any compatibility/software issues/problems?
    TIA.

I have the LiDE 200 at home and it works fine with 10.6.2. I use it with Picasa 3.5.2 and Preview and I'm happy with the quality of the scans. Haven't used it for film scanning however so cannot comment on that quality.
