Scanning for web

I am scanning back issues of a club magazine to archive on disc as well as publish or upload to the web. Files need to be searchable, but not editable. Issues average 50 pages and include text, color, and black and white photos. How do I streamline the process?

You can streamline the process, by getting the original files used to create the club magazine and not scanning. I can understand if you cannot get the oldest issues, but the later issues it should be possible and you will get a far better result.
As to issues that must be scanned. I recommend scanning each page to TIFF using the scanner program that came with your scanner. Since you want to perform OCR, probably scanning at 300 dpi should be fine. If you are willing to give up making the document searchable, then scanning at a lower dpi is possible. Touchup and cleanup any scans using a graphics program. The import the TIFFs into Acrobat and OCR the files.
You did say you want to streamline the process, but if you need to OCR the file you want your scans to be as good as possible, otherwise you can spend hours fixing up the OCR errors.

  • Signature for web scanning

Hi, i have webserver and i want to block scan for website using IPS ( any type of scan which reveals server infomoration).
Is there any signature used, if not can i create custom signature (how i can do it)
    thankssssssssssss

The only generic signature I see that is available here is 5724.0 which detects the Nikto scanner.
Many of these web scanners use specific techniques that we will block in generic web vulnerability signatures but they are not called out specifically as blocking a scanner.
For example you can try enabling the 5930 signatures for SQL injection protection.
If you want to create a custom signature, please follow this guide:

It takes forever to load web pages. Is it possible I have a virus eventhough I keep scanning for them?

Your internet experience is dependent upon several different factors. I doubt a virus is the problem.
    1) when you type in an address or click on a link your service provider's computer must turn the URL into an IP address - the computer that does this is called a Domain Name Server (DNS). Many ISPs have slow DNS servers. If it takes a long time for the page to start loading but then loads quickly that might be your problem. OpenDNS provides a free DNS server that is very fast.
    2) the connection between your computer and router. I assume you are using WiFi - hold down the Option key and click on the WiFi menu item in the menubar. The RSSI indicates signal strength / quality and the farther away the value is from 0 the lower the quality. something between -60 to 60 is a good signal. If it is in the 80s or higher (or -80 or lower) you might try changing the channel and/or moving the base station.
    3) your internet connection. Go here to see how fast your connection is. Your connect speed will be dependant upon your WiFi connection, your ISPs internet service, and how fast the connection is between your city and the testing city. If you suspect your WiFi service is all or part of the problem you'll want to fix that before running the test - or connecting with an ethernet cable would bypass the WiFi problem. Of course you'll need a dongle (or a different computer) to test that way.
My ISP is TimeWarner and at least for a while TW was notorius for having slow Domain Name Servers. I switched to OpenDNS and haven't looked back.

  • Save for Web and Device Grayed menu grayed out

Using Photoshop 11.0.1 (CS4) and Mac OSX 10.5.6), I have an action that saves a retouched file first as a high quality jpg and then as a optimized jpg for the web. It has worked fine in the past, but today when running the action I received a warning that the Export command was not available. I tried manually exporting the using the Save for Web and Devices menu item, but it is grayed out and not available. The file is sized to 1024 pixels on the longest side, no layers and in 8 bit mode.
So far I have done the following:
Trashed the Save for Web preference file
    Repaired permissions
    Scanned for viruses
    Rebooted the system
Any other ideas short of a reinstall?

  • Save for Web... and grayscale images

I noticed a strange behavior when I use "Save for Web and Devices" on scanned BW negatives...
I import the negatives via the scanner's twain driver in Photoshop as 16bit grayscale images. My grayscale working space is normally set to the default DotGain 20% profile. When I want to show these images on the web, I use "Save for Web and Devices..." and I have selected the convert to sRGB option. For some reason, the "embed color profile" option is disabled (grayed out) when the document is in grayscale mode.
When I view the the exported image (in a color managed application or browser) it looks too dark and shadow detail is lost. Examining the file info shows that the JPG file is in RGB color space and has the sRGB profile assigned.
When I convert the image to RGB mode before I do save for web... the exported image will look exactly like it looked in Photoshop. Also, the mode change doesn't cause a change in appearance. Also, after changing to RGB, the "embed color profile" option in save for web... becomes enabled.
I experimented with other working color spaces and noticed that an image exported from a grayscale image in "GrayGamma 2.2" working color space will display almost like an image that was exported from a grayscale image converted to RGB.
I would like to understand this behavior and whether it is correct. My assumption would be that a conversion to sRGB during the export should yield the same result like a manual conversion of the image in photoshop but for some reason the results are quite different.
How can I export my grayscale images to sRGB JPG without having to convert to RGB manually while preserving the tonality from the original image?
I have attached an image which I hope might illustrate the effect I'm describing. The crop on left hand side looks as expected and is the result of exporting from an image that was converted from grayscale to RGB mode (sRGB working space) before using save for web...
The image in the middle is the result from converting to GrayGamma 2.2 color space but leaving the image in grayscale mode before saving for web and devices. It is almost identical to the crop on the left. The crop on the right hand side is the result of using save for web and devices from the original image in grayscale mode with the default DotGain 20% profile.
    Thanks
    /lars

    Hi,
Is there a way to change the default HTML output template when you go to "Save for web" and select "HTML & Images"? I would like to modify the default HTML <head> tag.
    Thanks.

    Two observations.
First — "Tools-> ...." is specific to Acrobat X and XI. It did not exist prior to Acrobat X.
Second — Acrobat 9 Pro / Standard (nor earlier release) does not support viewing a PDF page containing a scanned image and performing a right-click  ... Save Image As.
The context menu provided by Acrobat 9 Pro with a right-click on a scanned image is:

  • Trouble outputting for web use

I have had various problems outputting documents to Jpegs for use on a webpage. I am exporting at the standard res of 72 ppi but find the quality unacceptable when I import these into i-web. Could this have something to do with the resolution certain images were scanned or imported at? Also the text is not reproduced as crisp as expected.
I am a bit of a novice in terms of Indesign so there may be an obvious solution that I haven't considered. Any help would be gratefully recieved.

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your help so far. I've tried exporting the PDF then converting to JPG in PS but the image quality appears to be worse than ever! Not sure if the settings I used for PDF where suitable for web use. Any ideas on how to maximise quality, maintaining crispness of fonts?
    Thanks

  • Save For Web Packs Up Again

    PSE3 on Mac.
With reference to my earlier post, where I thought the problem had beem
resolved, save for web is again giving the ' can't find file' message.
As per the advice which solved the problem earlier in the week,I've repaired permissions, reset PSE,and deleleted the preference file, all to no avail.
    Further suggestions gratefully received.

    Barbara.....
Thanks. I'll hold off doing this for the next few days.
I'm in the middle of a deadline to scan and edit 300 negatives from a family wedding I recently attended, and whilst I can live with the 'temporary' loss of save for web,I'd hate to have a problem with PSE in general.

  • Image capture for web-browsers out-of-the-box -- really no hopes?

    Hi all,
I planned to extend user's interface for my web2.0 app with a webcam. It looks for me like JMF is the only framework, which promises a multiplatform usage for web-surfers. Therefore, I tried some JMF code and some JMF samples already. However it looks for me now like one should rather forget about the installers providing an "out-of-the-box webcam support ready for housewives". I'd wish i am wrong.
Would you believe one can really make a simple installer enabling browsers like firefox, ie, safari and opera to upload a webcam snapshot by a single mouse click?
Thank you for your hints and comments,
    have a nice day,
    Valery.

    hi cat2014,
Welcome to the forums and sorry to hear about your sound trouble.
To check what's going on, can you provide these additional info:
    1. What's the model of your lenovo unit (eg. Y50-70)
    2. When you play a music file (ie. iTunes or YouTube), is the volume fluctuating but there's no sound comming from the built-in speakers?
       - Link to picture
If the speakers are enabled and the volume is fluctuating, this means that the sound adapter is okay and there's most likely a problem with the speakers. To check, try to:
      a. Use an earphone or an external speaker and observe if you can hear a sound
      b. Press the Windows Key +X and choose Device Manager. On the Device Manager window, navigate to Sound, video and game controllers and uninstall the sound adapter (ensure that you delete the device driver). When finished, do a scan for hardware changes. Windows will now use a generic sound driver and observe if you can how hear a sound from the built-in speakers
Let me know how it goes.

  • Stair-stepping artifacts when exporting H.264 426x240 video for web

I'm trying to export a 16:9 video clip for web using H.264 compression at 426x240 resolution from compressor using square pixel aspect ratio. No matter what bit rate I set it at -- 600kbps-6,000kbps I still get these really jagged edges. Even though my source is DV, the original file does not have anything close to this; also I have never had this issue before. One other thing to note is that if I export at full resolution H.264 -- 640x360, I don't get any stair-stepping.
Here is a frame grab of the video with the problem:
    http://salsunproductions.com/misc/crapy_artifacts-h264-frame.jpg
You can download a video clip of it here (data rate is around 600-700kbps):
    http://salsunproductions.com/misc/crapy_artifacts-h264.mov
I'm also noticing some sort of horizontal lines in the artifacts?? This is progressive scan footage shot on a DVX100B 24pA (and captured properly w/2:3:3:2 pull down removal, the original file doesn't have this)
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. This is getting really annoying having to export huge files...
    PS: I'm using Compressor v3.0.2

It could be some scaling artifact. Make your stream progressive using frame controls (stay away from the best setting) and that should help.

  • Scanning for viruses on Mac

I'm interested in scanning for viruses, not to protect my Mac but to avoid sending them to others. I've read a little about ClamXav and would like to hear from those of you who have used it. I don't want to run it continuously, but instead do a periodic system scan. Is it suitable to use like this? Any tips, benefits, or drawbacks you can tell me about? Thanks.

    Hello ha:
I am certainly not trying to dissuade you from helping others (I try to do that myself). However, anyone who runs a Windows box without A/V software, firewall(s), moats, and boiling oil on the ramparts is asking for it. The only way you would send a virus out would be an E-mail. If you open a web site that has a Windows virus it will not harm your Mac or go anywhere else - unless you download it and then E-mail it.
A/V software is, IMHO, a complete waste of time and resources for anyone running a Mac with OSX.
Sorry for the sermon, but I cannot imagine a Windows user without robust A/V software. In my former professional life, we ran Wintel boxes and had everything (including barbed wire) to pick off viruses. My IT people used to produce a report detailing how many viruses they intercepted and deactivated.
