Scanning from within CS4

I want to scan from within CS4 x64, like we used to in the old days!
I appreciate that TWAIN is making way for WIA, however, I can't find a way to scan from within photoshop and NOT have to immediately save the scanned image. In want to just scan and open, and then make the decision to save (or not) later on.
Can anyone please advise? (I have a Canoscan 4400F)
Cheers,
Aidan

I think you'd have to ask (canon?) to update their drivers to do what you want. sounds like a scanner driver issue rather than photoshop.

  • Scanning from Photoshop CS4, using a Brother MFC-8420

Hi all, I'm trying to scan from within Photoshop CS4 (File -> import -> Brother Twain -> etc).
It worked fine with Tiger/PPC/CS2. But since I have Leopard on an Intel Mac Pro, no dice. All I can use is the 'Brother Control Center' which allows me to make staggering 100dpi scans at 100%, but i need a higher resolution.
I already downloaded the proper drivers from Brothers site. Several times.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

You can change the scan resolution settings. With the ControlCenter software, just to the right of the scanner "Model" selector, there is a "Configuration" button where you can choose Configuration > Scan > Image - and set the resolution and many other optimization settings for the scans, including file type, document size etc.
Each of the different scan types - Image, OCR, E-mail, File - can have different configuration set.
I'm not having any problems scanning from my MFC-9840CDW to PS CS3 or by using the Brother ControlCenter2 software. I haven't tested with PS 4 as we are moving away from slowly released, buggy, proprietary interfaces that Adobe products have become... (Another whole topic and rant )

  • Bridge wont open from within cs4

I upgraded to cs4 from cs2, it works fine but bridge wont open from within cs4. I get this little window - error2:photoshop 11 is undefined. Line 1, photoshop11.invoke bridge (false, false")
Bridge does open from windows start menu.

What folder did you put them in? also, you need to restart Photoshop before you can see them added to the panel menu.

  • Scan from Photoshop CS4

    Hi all,
i have a samsung multifunction printer and would like to use it on the G5 to scan out of PS. The model is an scx-4200r and before i bought it i checked that Mac OSX (10.3. - 10.6.) would be supported.
I installed the printer and scanner software downloaded from the Samsung website, the installations -so it told me- were successful and printing and copying facilities work fine.
However, the installer did not tell me where to it installed and even with the search function i can find no application allowing me to access the scanner.
I expected to be able to scan via file >import in PS, but there is no option to do so, i.e. no scanner showing.
I have searched the discussions for the last two days for this topic, finally enabling me to scan from Image Capture. This is to some extent a relief, but it'd be better to scan directly from PS with which i am working constantly.
Had installed the scanner software and the MAC_Twain scanthru, then uninstalled both and just installed the scanthru, thinking they might interfere, but to no better result.
Have read in the discussions about displacing a plugin and deleting .plists but don't really know what i am looking for since searching for scanthru or samsung brings up no results.
    Can anyone help me?

  • I need to know how to scan from within Photoshop CC 2014 with an Epson V700 scanner.

In the past there's been a driver to allow me to import directly from Photoshop. I don't see that now. What am I missing? Thanks.

Just use the MAGIC WAND TOOL, and select the black area(s). Hit the delete button... and you're done

  • Scanning from all-in-one printer to Elements

I have a Dell 4000 desktop computer, running Windows 7, 32-bit version, an Epson Stylus SX515W all in one printer/scanner etc, and Photoshop Elements 6.  I am told that I cannot scan from my Epson scanner to Elements 6, and that I will need Photoshop Elements 10 to do this.
    1. Is this correct?
    2. If so, do I have to buy a full version of Elements 10, or can I buy an upgrade?
    3. If only an upgrade is needed, what is it called, what will it cost and where can I download it from?
    4. If I have to buy the full version of Elements 10, will I need any other software to get it to scan images from my Epson Stylus SX515W?
    5. Where do I have to look to find your reply?

    Hi Nick,
First of all I would like to inform that PSE 6 is not tested on Win 7 and is very old version.
In order to scan  from PSE, you will need Twain plugin which is required to scan from within Adobe Applications.
To check if you already have twain or not, follow this :
    Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\Import-Export\
If you find a file called "Twain", then you should be able to scan, if not then you have to download Twain from here : http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4688&fileID=4376
Save the file, unzip it and then follow these steps :
    Close PSE 6.
After that , navigate to PSCS5OptionalPlugins_Win_en_US\PSCS5OptionalPlugins_Win_en_US\Optional Plug-Ins\Win32, here you will find Twain_32.8BA file
Copy this file and then paste under  : C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\Import-Export\
Launch PSE 6 and check if you get the option to scan under File >> Import menu
If the above solution doesnt work, then you may have to ugrade to PSE 10.
The price for upgrade is $79.99 and full price is $99.99
You can purchase full and upgrade both from Adobe.com website
    Thanks,

  • Can I scan an image from Photoshop CS4 (or another component?)

I'm new to Photoshop (used to Corel PhotoPaint where I have a command under "File" to "acquire" an image from an external scanner).
Is there a way to do it in Photoshop or do I look for another app in CS4 for that purpose?
    Thanks,
    Rob

I have a CanoScan 8800F, which I can use through Twain (PSE, CS5/32-bit) or WIA (also with CS5/64-bit). The WIA interface offers only very rudimentary functionality (eg no activation of backlight for scanning transparencies). I don’t buy the argument that I should not tie up a $1000 piece of software for $200 (or so) piece of hardware. When I scan, and particularly when I scan old off-color slides, I don’t know beforehand if I can salvage the image with post-processing or if I should adjust the scanner settings. If I scan from Photoshop, I can adjust color and tonality, and I fail to salvage the image, I can re-scan with different settings, while the slide is still in the holder.
Some say that it is silly to a tie up a $1000 piece of software for $200 (or so) piece of hardware. What, then, do you call investing money and learning time for another piece of software if I already own Photoshop and can use it?
The present implementation of the Twain scanning with the 8800F is suboptimal, however. For instance, if I have been scanning slides and the scanner driver is set up for color transparencies, and I then configure the scanner for scanning paper (by removing the slide holder and inserting the back plate which blocks the backlighting), my next attempt to scan aborts with an error message that the scanner is unable to scan slides, probably because the backlighting is blocked. The scanner UI, along with the tab for adjusting scanner settings, is visible in the background, but I can’t access it because of the error message. And when I acknowledge the error message, the scanner UI disappears. I must physically re-configure the scanner to scan slides, then select paper scanning (in the software) and again re-configure the scanner for scanning paper.

  • Cm1312nfi mfp on 32bit windows 7 - upgraded with full solution sw and can't scan from printer

I have had a cm1312nfi mrp since 2009 that works fine but my HP Solution centre stopped giving me ink levels.
I uninstalled the printer software and downloded the current full solution sw for 32 bit windows 7 from HP. The printer works but I did not 'get' HP solution centre back and so cannot scan from the printer.
[I did download HP toolbox so I can see ink levels and can test the scan function which does work. However it does not have the ocr capabiltity which I had before and also it doesn't allow me to operate the scanner from the printer.]
Can you help me either get HP solution Centre back and functioning on my computer or else suggest some other solution to my problem?

    Hi,
The HP Solution Center is a software for inkjet printers as the HP Officejet product line, not for laserjet printers as the CM1312.
You may find the Supplies status within the HPToolboxFX softwre by selecting Supplies:

From within Photoshop Elements, when I try to open Editor, a box opens that states I must activate the software.  I registered and activated the software last year.  When I click to activate, I get a message that I am not connected to the internet.  I am connected.  How do I get Editor to work?

You would get the redemption code, or perhaps even the serial number, from whomever you purchased the software from, apparently Amazon, so talk to them.  This wouldn’t be the first time they’ve sold something that didn’t have all the numbers needed to license it.
A redemption code is something that is usually on the inner disc packaging if you purchase the media in a box, and there is a barcode on the outside of the packaging that must be scanned at the checkout register to activate the hidden inner code so you can redeem it at home on that website.  This is what happens if you buy PSE from a brick-and-mortar store like Best Buy.  I don’t’ know what happens if you purchase the downloaded version as I have never done that.
A redemption code is 24-digits of letters and numbers that you enter into a website to get a serial number, once and only once.  The serial number of only 24-digits, no letters, is what you enter into the software during the install or when you run it and it asks if you want to register or run in a trial mode—whatever the exact phrasing is.
In any case it sounds like you don’t have either a redemption code or serial number—although perhaps something is listed on the purchase confirmation or your account online at Amazon or even in an e-mail from Amazon.

  • Can't scan from Solution Center, using an HP Photosmart C4480 all in one

I bought a C4480 from a friend, did not come with the software CD. I downloaded the full-feature software package from the HP site. It prints from solution center but when I press the scan button in solution center nothing happens. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software several times without success. Is there any way to fix this? Is there a software glitch and is there a patch available? Is there a way to scan without using Solutino Center? I'm running Vista 32 bit on a Dell XPS A1530.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions on what to do.

    Hello Ben,
I am sorry to see you are unable to scan from Solution Center with your Photosmart C4480. I understand you have uninstalled and reinstalled quite a few times and that did not resolve the problem. I would like to help you.
First, I recommend running HP's Print and Scan Doctor.
This is a tool used to search and help correct/target scanning and printing issues.
To answer your question, yes you are able to scan without using the Solution Center.
You can also use Paint, within any Windows operating system. (Select the top left down arrow, and choosing "From scanner or camera")
Also, you can use Windows Fax and Scan. You can find that by clicking on your start button and typing "scan" in the search and it should come right up.
If you are still unable to complete a scan, please try to make a copy on the printer.
You can also try Resetting your Printer.
Feel free to write back with your findings and any other questions or comments you may have.
    Good luck!

  • Can't scan from wireless networked Pixma MP640

I just hooked up a new Canon MP 640 via wireless network through my Airport Extreme. Printing works fine, but when I try to scan to my Macbook the printer can't find it over the network. It will only scan to the Macbook with a direct USB connection. I can't find any documentation that suggests that scanning doesn't work over a network connection. Any help?

First of all, even though you mention network scanning, I am not sure if you have the printer using the internal wireless support or if you have it connected to the USB port of the Airport Extreme. Some users interpretation of network connections vary. So if you do have it connected to the USB port of the Extreme, then scanning is not supported. This is a limitation of Airport devices.
If however you have configured the MP640 to connect to the Extreme via wireless and you are trying to initiate the scan from the MP640 to the Mac using the Scan button, then you need to have the [Canon IJ Network Tool v2.70|http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0200080802.html] installed on the Mac.
Also, if you want MP Navigator to open when you use the MP640 Scan button, you need to install [MP Navigator Opener v3.0|http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0200087801.html] on the Mac.
Note that for the network scanner, there should be a separate MP640 entry under the heading of Scanners within the list of devices in Print & Fax. With this MP640 selected, you will have the Open Scanner button visible in the right hand pane. If you click this button, the MP640 scanner window will appear and attempt to connect to the AIO. Does this occur for you?

  • Is there any downside to using a reference type library if I use Time Capsule and will do file management only from within Aperture?

Have done a lot of reading to get prepared to convert to Aperture 3 and have this question regarding setting up my library type.
I'm not a professional -just a heavy user hobbyist.
It appears that the major factors in using reference style is to backup the images with Time Capsule and always do moves or deletes from within the Aperture application.
If my architecture matters here's what I have that may be involved in photo management and editing:
iMac (latest 27" high power version with lots of memory)
Internal 2TB HD where the library is stored
External (FireWire) 2TB HD where the images are stored
External (FireWire) 6TB HD backup drive
In the future an iPad for remote work on images (when/if available) and a Mac laptop (for same remote use)
I see major downside issues to letting the library manage my files - such as inaccessibility (or awkward accessibility) to the images for other programs, and performance issues when the library gets large (thousands of images or 100+ gb in size)
The chief complaints I've seen regarding using a reference mode is the broken link issues created if file management is done outside of Aperture (adds, deletes, moves of files) and the inability to use the Vault function for backup.
One feature that I imagine I'd like to have is maximum integration with Final Cut Pro X and that's one area I haven't seen much on and would be interested to hear about if that integration is affected with the choice of managed vs referenced library types. (I like to produce film clips that are combinations of pics and video and want to be set up so that is done in the easiest fashion when working in FCP X)
I'm sure I've not seen all sides of this issue and would like to see some discussion around this question.
    Thanks to everyone contributing!
    Craig

Goody, Goody, you hit a few of my favorite subjects! Herewith some comments, with the usual caveats - true to the best of my knowledge and experience, others may have different results, YMMV, and I could be wrong.
I run Aperture on two machines:
-- 2007 Mac Pro with 2x2.66 GHz Xeon, 21 GB of RAM, a 5770 GPU, and multiple HD. I have about 11,000 images, taking up 150 GB. (Many are 100 MB TIFF, scanned slides)
-- 2006 Mac Book Pro with 1 2.0 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD.
    Two very different machines.
-- Aperture Libraries are all the same - Managed or Referenced. If Managed, then the Master image files are inside the Package, if Referenced, they are outside, and you can have any combination you want. Managed is easier, but Referenced is not hard if you are the least bit careful.
-- While the sheer size of an Aperture Library is not a big issue, the location on disk of the different components can have a tremendous impact on performance.
-- Solid State Drives (SSD) read and write faster than regular Hard Disks (HD) and, what is more important, empty HD read and write much faster than full HD.
-- Aperture speed requires a combination of RAM, CPU, graphics processing unit (GPU) speed, and disk speed. The more RAM you have, the less paging you will see. With enough RAM, the next bottle neck is CPU (speed and cores) and GPU speed. But even then you will still have to fetch an image (longer if you pull the full resolution Master, read and rewrite the Version file, and update the Preview and Thumbs.
    So what works?
-- RAM, RAM, and more RAM. 4 GB will work, but you will page a bit. 8 GB is much faster. On my old MacPro the sweet spot was about 16 GB of RAM.
-- Keep your Library on your fastest (usually internal) drive. Keep that disk as unloaded as possible. How do you keep it unloaded? Either buy BIG, 1 TB+ or move your Masters off onto another disk. The good news here is that as Master files are written only once and never rewritten, speed of this disk, as opposed to the disk that holds the Library, is not important. There is a one second pause as the Master is read into memory and, if you have enough RAM, that is it - the Master will never be paged out. If, on the other hand, you do not have enough RAM, and you do a lot of adjusting at full resolution, then the speed of the disk that holds your Masters will become very important due to paging.
-- I found that I picked up a tiny bit of speed by keeping the Masters on a dedicated disk. Thus, in your configuration, if you can dedicate that 2 TB FW HD to your Masters, you should see very nice performance.
Final notes on backups and archives:
-- One conventional wisdom is that you should make an archive copy of every image file before or as you load them into your system. (Aperture in this case.) This archive is then never touched or deleted.
-- An alternative approach is that you do not keep such an archive, but only the images that you have in your Aperture Library. And when you delete from the Library, you no longer keep a copy anywhere.
    I do the following:
-- Card to Aperture. Card is then kept at least 24 hours until all of my backups have run. (I use three - Time Machine, Clone, and off site.)
-- I do not keep archive copies. If I decide to delete a file, my only recourse is to recover it from Time Machine during the six month cycle of my Time Machine backups. Thereafter, it is lost.
There are merits to both approaches.
Hope this is clear, correct, and responsive to your needs.

  • Scan From String White Space

    i all,
I'm trying to use Scan From String in order to parse some data coming in from UDP.
    Input String: ASCII [00 01 02 03 ... FF]
    What I want: s[00 .. 30]  d[12], d[34], d[56] leftover s[37 38 39 ... FF]
    ATTEMPT1
    Format String: %49s%2d%2d%2d
What I get: s[00-09] RUNTIME ERROR!
    ATTEMPT2
    Format String: %49[^]%2d%2d%2d
What I get: Only allows first output. Will error out if I use any additional outputs from Scan From String
    ATTEMPT3
Format String: %49[^(0xFF)]%2d%2d%2d Value in () is ASCII character FF.
    What I get: s[00 .. 30] d[12], d[34], d[56] leftover s[37 38 39 ... FF]
It appears as though when I use %##[^] it thinks I'm looking for the ENTIRE string so it will not let me add any more Formatting.  If I add a delimiter other than ^ it will run, and it will work presuming that character isn't within the first 49 characters... and I can't guarentee that it won't.
I'm aware I can parse my string using subsets and whatnot... but Scan From String is so elegant.  It would be great if %S allowed for white space... or if $##[^] would simply take the first ## characters and allow me to Format after that.
Is there a simple, elegant way to do this?  I wish my dataset was only 3-4 outputs. It'd be ideal if I could.  Thanks.
    Edit:
It might be more helpful if I provide a less abstract example:
I have an ASCII Header (Finite Length String), a Sender IP (Finite Length String), a Timestamp, a Message ID (Finite Length Decimal), A Message in ASCII ( '1' actually means 0x31, not 0x01)  And for some ungodly reason... no delimiters.
So I was HOPING %##s%##s%<%H:%M:%s>t%##d   (With leftover string to be my message)  would work, but if any white space is contained within there... it messes up.

I cannot provide exact strings because the string is actually ASCII characters, most of which aren't displayable.
    I have a string where I have:
24 ASCII Characters representing 6x U32 Header Data
13 ASCII characters represening the sender IP (string)
12 ASCII Characters representing the name of the message (String)
    12 ASCII Characters representing 3x U32 Data
12 ASCII Characters represneting the name of packet (String)
    12 ASCII Characters representing 12x U8 Data
    256 ASCII Characters represening 256x U8 Data
    etc...
It would be ideal to simply Scan from the string and output the data with the appropriate data types already assigned instead of splitting string and type casting each individualy.  But if, for example, my header starts with an ASCII representation of a U32 of 2560(decimal) it would look like this:  [00][00][0A][00].  ASCII 0A is considered white space.  So my header would only contain 2 ASCII characters instead of the desired 24.

  • Scan from string and extract string between delimiter

    Hello,
Basic questions.  Is it possible with the scan from string regular expression to extract the string that are within the specified delimiters.  Here is an example:
\\Name of folder 1\Name of folder 2\Name of folder 3\File Name
Can the scan from string output the following by specifying the right regular expression:
    Name of folder 1
    Name of folder 2
    Name of folder 3
    File Name
I have tried \\\\%s\\%s\\%s\\%s but the %s stops at the first white space.
    Thanks,
