Scanning of Film Prints by Processing Labs - Image Resolution

I shoot a fair amount of film, in addition to digital, so I usually scan my own photos to be able to use the image editor. I've asked around to the run of the mill photo labs (wally world, costco, kmart, etc) about having my images output to picture CD and there appears to be quite a bit of difference in the image resolution and output format they offer. Many of them can't top my basic flatbed scanner.
anyone have any insight into this, or suggestions for where I might go to get a 5MP output image tif?
Most of the photo labs offer jpg at around 1600 x 1200
thanks!

My comment came about for 3 reasons:
1) I have come across quite a lot of people who either buy or save up for DSLRs who don't need them. They just think it's the only route to good pictures. The reality is that, in some cases, they never get a good pic because the cameras are too complex. The main thing is to be aware of the options.
2) For the last 15 years of film photography [I gave up film 3 years ago], I used SLRs. There really wasn't a choice. I started out with a bag full of lenses, which I lugged around. I missed loads of pictures because I hadn't lugged it. In the latter few years I started using "super-zoom" lenses - 28-200 and then 28-300. The effect was that I just didn't need any other optics. I was still carrying a camera weighing about 1Kg, but that was an improvement.
3) For me, photography is about taking pictures. Period. I come across so many people who are obsessed with all the equipment. They buy all the mags and are always hankering after something new. I sometimes wonder if they ever take any pictures [other than all those "test shots"]. I've had the same digicam for 3 years. I might upgrade it soon, but I'm not in a hurry.

  • Batch process makes image resolution change to 72dpi - it should be 300dpi - Help!

In my work I use a batch process to run an action that converts EPS files to TIFF files. I have been using this successfully in Photoshop 7 on a Win2000 PC for a number of years. The process is as follows...
    Open EPS file
    Flatten Image
    Save
    Close
When I recorded the action I made sure that the resolution was set to 300dpi as we require the TIFF produced at the end to be that resolution.
I am now testing PSCS3 on a WinXP machine as we are upgrading all of our equipment. When I run the action as a batch process the TIFFs that are saved end up being 72dpi - They should be 300dpi. This worked in PS7 on the Win2000 machine and I am using exactly the same process in PSCS3 on the new WinXP machine, but something must be going wrong somewhere for the TIFFs to be saved at 72dpi instead of the required 300dpi. Any ideas?

That doesn't seem to work - it doesn't appear to record any changes I make in the 'Image Size' dialog.
When I look at the actions that I recorded in PS7 there are all the settings that I specified at the 'Open' step, such as 300dpi, greyscale, etc. saved under 'Open', but when I do the same in PSCS3 it doesn't record all the settings, just the actual 'Open' command, so I need to find a way of making PSCS3 remember '300dpi', 'greyscale', etc. within the 'Open' step like it did when I recorded the action using PS7.

  • Problems with scanning color film negatives

I am using an Epson 4990 flatbed scanner to scan color film negatives. When I scan 120 film I can during the scanning process that the entire negative has been scanned, but in thumbnails and then in the final scan the picture (image) is smaller than the negative. It is as if the software is cropping the picture. Is there anyway to ensure that the scanned picture is the same size as the negative?

    Hello @JGFWilks!
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I can see that the software is not available for your Scanjet G4050 on Mac 10.10.  Although the the software is not available ImageCapture should still allow the option for "auto selection"in the dropdown should be "detect separate items" It should then detect your 30 separate photo negatives.  When you are in image capture you will want to ensure you press "show details" at the bottom of the window to get all the options.  You may also want to try changing the resolution to a higher DPI to see if that helps when scanning the negatives.
Thanks again for posting on the HP Forums!  Enjoy the rest of the day!

  • HT3669 My Epson Perfection 1200 scanner functions as a flatbed scanner but when I try to scan transparencies the control panels change in  Image Capture but the scanner bar will not complete the overview scan  & cannot travel beyond the first 2/3 centimet

Epson Perfection 1200 scanner continues to function as a flatbed scanner but when I try to scan transparencies/film negs the control panels change in  Image Capture but the scanner bar will not complete the overview scan  & cannot travel beyond the first 2/3 centimeters. All the communications seem to recognise the scanner and the mode for the intended scan but the necessary overview scan is not completed, nothing comes up on the Image Capture scan window. If I unplug the film adaptor I can get a document scan. When I plug in the adaptor again the Image Capture details change which allows me to select the type of scan required but when the scanner attempts an overview scan it is unable to complete it.
I have had the scanner from new (12 Years) and have previously scanned slides and film with the adaptor but maybe this was before I upgraded my computer (imac 27").
Do I have to buy a new scanner?  It seems so close to working correctly.
I have downloaded the Epson recommended driver (5.4) and have Epson Perfection 1200 6.6 Universal showing in the Applications List.
Any thoughts or observations would be much appreciated before I go out and spend money an new hardware.
    Thanks

I have same issue - have you solved this yet?

Just upgraded and installed for Officejet Pro 8620. Hello,
I am having new issues with scanning documents on my HP Photosmart Premium Series C309 All-in-One printer/scanner.
I have been able to successfully scan and save documents, but just recently, something happened. It appears the scanner is successfully scanning the documents, and I am able to inpput my "save to" information, but the documents are now disappearing into cyber space.
I am operating wirelessly via a Mac Book Pro with OS 10.9 (I believe).
Can someone guide me to what is going wrong and what to do about it please? I've tried using the utilities and help available online and in my computer
    Thanks,

    Hi Spirit Dancer,
You may scan using Image Capture or Preview, the HP Scan application for your printer is not intended for Mavericks and such save issues are expected.
Follow the workaround below to scan from your printer to Mac OS X 10.9:

You may need to reset that to use higher scan quality for successful OCR.

  • Preparing files for printer - no CM requested, image resizing

Using InDesign CS3 504, on Mac OSX 10.6.
I'm approaching the end of preparing a 40pp A4 magazine for a client.  In about one week I'll be submitting my file to the printers who are UK based (I am UK based, too).  I'm looking for the best set up to help them get things done accurately and efficiently.
My printers have requested that there be no Colour Management.  I'm used to working with CM through CS, so I'm not certain what to do in this case.
Here's what I've done so far:
All colour swatches used are CMYK Process
All images are CMYK/Grayscale and have been saved with no colour profile
InDesign still has CM turned on - I have read that 'Emulate InDesign CS2 CM off' doesn't really switch it offAll images that get brought into InDesign show the colour profile from my InDesign CM in the Info palette (Euroscale Coated v2)
I also need to Export to PDF for them.  What's the best setting for me to use for this?  Should I be choosing 'No Colour Conversion' and 'Don't Include Profiles'?
I also don't understand if I need to resize my images to 300dpi at 100% size used (the printer's requested resolution for actual size output).  This would be a relatively small job though, as there aren't that many pics.  If I do this, would I Export to PDF with no Image Compression?
    Thanks.

I'm going to give you my 2 cents worth here.
First, you don't need to size the images in Photoshop, you just need to be sure that the "effective resolution" that you see in the info panel is at least 300 ppi. If it's much more, downsampling at export is appropriate, if it's a lot less you need a larger image to start -- upsampling in Photoshop isn't going to improve things. 200-225 ppi is the lowest I'd be comfortable with for commercial grade offset, but it depends on the paper and linescreen.
As far as color management, you are correct, emulate CS2 CM Off is not a good way to work. My impression form what you've posted is that the printer wants no clor profiles embedded in your files to avoid the possibility of having his RIP do a color conversion that would do something bad, like make your 100% K type a 4-color mix.
There are several ways to approach this. The best, in my opinion, is to find out what the correct output space is going to be. Assign that as the working space in the document. Native objects and untagged imports will be treated as being in that space. Imports with embedded profiles will their colors adjusted to maintain the appearance in the tagged sapce, as closely as possible. I think this is better for photos, since I want them to look correct, and they don't have 100% single channel colors that will cause a problem, so I always embed the profile in photographs, and I have my color management policy set to preserve profiles.
On the other hand, vector logos, may want to be printed with the same mix of ink all the time, regardless of the color profile, especially if they have black type or strokes, so I tend not to embed profiles in those when saving. They will be interpreted then as being in the working space.
At export you can then either leave colors unchanged (if there is no RGB), or choose the working space as the target profile, and your CMYK values will be preserved. Do not embed profiles in the PDF.
If you have the wrong working space you can expect some color shifting on press.
Next best would be to work in whatever working space you think is correct and picking convert to to profile (preserve numbers) and choosing the correct target when you find out what it is. In that scenario any native objects and untagged imported images will be treated as if they are already in the destination space and the numbers will be unchanged. If your photos or linked graphics have embedded profiles, those profiles will be honored and converted to the destination. This should give you the same result as the first method, but puts off the need to know the output space until export.
My main reason for preferring the first method is that the screen preview is going to reflect the working space, so if that matches the destination you'll get a better idea of what's going on.

  • How to print the date the image was taken as a watermark on the image

I want to print the date the image was taken (available as EXIF-data) as an automatic watermark (or otherwise as a caption ON the photo, and not as a header of a footer above or under the photo). I can't find how to do it. Any help? Thanks!

The only way you could batch this with out of the box PE is to put in via process multiple files in the editor, but you'd have to manually type it in and can only do one date per batch of files. So you could do all the photos taken on one day in one batch, but not a group taken on different days.

  • How do In scan negative film to be able to see tiffs in Lightroom 4?

How do In scan negative film to be able to see tiffs in Lightroom 4?

LR supports TIFF format files up to 65,000 pixels and 2GB in size according to: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS42D207D7-B290-4baa-A896-AB71965BF24B.html, so 70MB shouldn’t be a problem.
TIFF is a container format so the actual image data contained within could vary e.g. uncompressed, JPEG etc. Maybe the image data is incompatible with LR? I personally use uncompressed TIFF for certain operations so this is definitely compatible.
Do you have any TIFFs that can be imported? Perhaps you could compare the compatible and incompatible TIFFs using a metadata viewer such as the very excellent ExifTool by Phil Harvey (http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool)
NB Bogdan Hrastnik has developed a Windows GUI wrapper for ExifTool available here: http://u88.n24.queensu.ca/~bogdan/
Maybe the issue is local to your system and LR does, in fact, support the files. I’d be happy to try importing one on my system if you’d like to send one through...

  • Can I scan 110 film negatives on the canoscan 9000f?

I am contemplating buying the canoscan 9000f, but I will need to be able to scan 110mm film format. Can I do this on the canoscan 9000f? I have seen an adapter for that film size on ebay and amazon (oddly enough, cannot find it on Canon), but the price is prohibitive. Can I scan negatives without any holder - in other words, just lay the film directly on the glass platen and scan the negatives in that way?

I found a useful article online called:  "How to Scan Odd (Non-Standard) Size Film Negatives on a CanoScan 8800F Scanner -Made Easy".
      Here's the URL:  http://askjoanne.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-Scan-Odd-Non-Standard-Sized-Negative-on-a-CanoScan-8800F
I have a Canoscan 9000f, and I guess it is similar to the 8800f.
Under the scanner lid, remove the white and black background panel.  Center the 110 negative on the glass and close the lid.
When you get into the Canon MP Navigator software, you want to Scan and Import -- Film.  Click on the little box that says "Use the scanner driver."  Then click on "Open Scanner Driver."  That sends you to the ScanGear Advanced Mode settings.
The first time I did this, I could not understand why many choices were grayed out.
You have to click on PREVIEW    !!
When I did this, I got an error message:  "The film could not be detected.  Please check if the Select Source is correct, or confirm if the film is set correctly and execute preview again.  Otherwise, please switch off the thumbnails view mode."
That last part was the key  -- the thumbnails switch is in the upper left corner of the screen.  There's a little Slide icon and a little Negative icon.  Click on this "switch", and when the Negative icon shows up in color, you are set to go.
Now, when you click on PREVIEW, your 110 negative should appear.  Now just "crop" the 110 negative:  move the cursor over one corner of the negative, hold down the left mouse button, move to the diagonally opposite corner, release the mouse button.
Delete the black box (if there is one)  in the upper left of the scan area.
Now click on SCAN.  When it finishes scanning, you can choose to "Retouch and save the image (Close ScanGear dialog)".  When you close ScanGear, you will wind up back in the MP Navigator.
In the Scan Complete box, click on exit.
Then SAVE your scan under a new name (not IMG).
Then you can Open the image in a good photo-editing software.  I use PhotoShop Elements.  There you will need to crop each individual photo on the 110 strip, and save each photo under a different name.
I think you can use the same technique on other sized negatives.
A good article about negative sizes is: "About Film Formats - Slides, Negatives, & Transparencies"  at www.pearsonimaging.com .

    Dear Pugal
we are not using GLM + and I am not sure about the technqiue used there to handle load balancing. Regarding general WWI setup I assume you know this Note: EH&S: Availability and performance of WWI and Expert servers
On the top there is a further SAP Note abvailable which might be of interest. This is referenced here:
    http://de.scribd.com/doc/191576739/011000358700000861002013-e
May be check OSS note: 1958655; OSS Note 1155294 is more related to normal WWI stuff; but may be check it as well. May be 1934253 might help better
    May be this might help.
    C.B.
PS: may be check as well: consolut - EHS_MD_140_01 - EH&S-Management-Server einrichten
The load balancing of synchron WWi servers is donein the "RFC" layer, therefore you have no inffluence here, for asynchron WWI servers you can do a lot to manage the WWI load balancing by using "exits" etc.

My Canon MX 922 does not scan. My printer is connected via cable. Wireless doesn't work either.  I get an error message with multiple suggestions but none of them apply to my situation.
I am so dissatisfied with this printer.  I'm sorry I got it from Amazon because now it is a hassle to return it.  I will never buy another Canon.
The printer menus are confusing.  I hate using it.  I loved my previous Canon which finally stopped working after many years, that's why I purchased a newer Canon model.  Never again.  Stick with cameras.

This note won't be as angry and frustrated as the last one...
Because I still had my old printer drivers and other applications on my hard drive, I think the application was trying to connect with the old printer.  I deleted all the old stuff.
I also had several scanning applications on my drive which just confused me.
When I used the actual Canon MX922 application, I was able to scan but could only save as JPG, TIF or BMP (and one more, I forget which).  So I did some research on the Canon site and found out how to save documents as PDF files using the Canon IJ Scan Utility.
It works now.  So I'm satisfied, will keep this maching.  I just had to take some time, sit down and focus on the problem.
