Scanning pencil drawings from vellum to transparent background??

Hi, how can pencil drawings on vellum (or any white background) be scanned into Photoshop in a way which would render their white backgrounds transparent?
Is there a trick to layer settings, for example, which will take out the (grayish) scanned white background and enable one to replace it with transparency or another color altogether?
Thanks

Those Berg Designs Filters are pretty darn cool Buko- Thanks.
jezzthisisfull,
That filter might do it for you, and you have nothing to lose by trying. If not, you could go about it the old fashion way.
Duplicate the channel that has the most contrast (if there's any difference), apply Levels or Curves to the new channel and really Blast the contrast. (I prefer Curves).
Then use that channel as a mask.
Potential problem: Depending on how clean the line drawings are, you might get fuzzy edges. (You know those little lead flakes that aren't really that noticeable in the originals but always got you busted by your Typography teacher anyway.)

  • Creating PDFs from documents with graphics having transparent background

    I came across this problem when making PDFs of PowerPoint presentations but I have found that the same thing happens in Word.
    PDFs created from documents containing graphics having transparent backgrounds end up being very large (usually much larger than the source documents) and rendering slowly on the screen. The graphics are either JPGs with background set as transparent using the Set Transparent Color tool on the picture toolbar in MS Office applicatons, or PNGs that already have transparent backgrounds when inserted in the document. PDFs made from the same documents in which the graphics do not have transparent backgrounds are much smaller and render more quickly.
    When I try to select the graphics in the resulting PDFs using the Touch-up Object tool, I find that each graphic is actually made up of many individual graphic lines. Graphics without a transparent background select as a single object.
    I have tried several PDF creation tools and all kinds of settings but nothing seems to make much of a difference. The only way I can get a reasonable file size is to reduce resolution in the PDF creation settings to the point that they are unacceptable.
    This happens to me in the following applications:
    * MS Word 2003
    * MS PowerPoint 2003
    I have tried these PDF creation tools:
    * Acrobat 7 Pro
    * JAWS PDF Creator 3.60
    * Bullzip PDF Printer 6.0
    Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution?
    Thanks.

    Well we can color this one solved. What I figured out I can do is have the application tell Word to print-to-file using an Apple LaserWriter (or other PostScript) printer, and put the resulting file in a folder that is being watched by Distiller. Distiller then converts the PS document to PDF and I'm in business.
    So no change in the user process, and no need to crack open a new API and add it to the existing application. Works for me.
    Thanks to all for the suggestions and specific links and other information of interest...

  • PICT file (transparent background) - motion (from off screen left to right)

    I have a PICT file with a transparent background. I imported it and put it in a track above a photo. Basically I just want to to go from off screen left to off screen right. I tried selecting the pict image, going to the motion tab and using keyframes in the ‘centre’ option to move the image off to the sides. The problem is that when I view it, its almost like every second/third line of pixels lags (Making the edges jagged).
    The edges of the image are fine when there is no motion, and it seems to get worse the more distance it is traveling.
    The only thing I have changed is the 'quick time video settings compressor'; it is ‘none’ because that is the only way I could find that wouldn’t end up messing up the sides of the image when I imported it.
    I have been using final cut for about 3 hours? So I am not sure what to do, or if I am even approaching this problem the right way. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    I am currently trying to find a way to get a screen shot, but can’t get it to paste into any programs I have….

    Edit: this happens when ever I do any scaling/movement/rotation/etc...
    Here is an example of what I mean:

  • Problem with exported jpegs from CS5 PSDs with transparent backgrounds

    I've detected an issue where when exporting jpegs from a CS5 PSD layered file with a transparent background, the jpegs don't have a pure white background (255, 255, 255). They seem to range from 250, 250, 250 to 253, 253, 253.
    LR3 with same export settings does not show this behavior--it's pure white: 255, 255, 255.

    Bill,
    Another very helpful solution and I appreciate knowing how to fix it in both applications. Thanks!

  • How to remove transparent background from a circle shape

    I have been desperately trying to create a circular logo for an icon in Photshop CS6. Unfortunately I have to start with a rectangular background. After creating the circluar icon I want to remove it from the canvas leaving only the circular icon. I can't find a way to do it.
    Everytime I try I end up with the canvas shape behind the icon logo.
    Isn't there a way to crop a circle? Initiate a circular canvas? Help!

    Hi there
    As Charles mentioned, it would be very helpful if you could post a screenshot. When you say "rectangular background", do you mean the locked background layer that's in your layers panel when you create a new canvas? I've posted a screenshot below.
    If this is the case, you can simply delete this background layer. Unless you have another background layer, this will leave you with a transparent background, essentially "removing" the area around your logo. You would then be able to save the file in a format that supports transparency (such as .png).
    Please post again if you need further clarification. Screenshots would be very helpful!

  • Is it possible to import an image w/ transparent background from photoshop?

    Hello,
    I was wondering if it's possible to import an image which contains a transparent part of it into Motion, so I can later add in images and videos underneath that layer.
    Thanks for your time.

    hi again,
    there are two ways to do this. In Photoshop you can elect to have a transparent background, if you erase your image to show the chequered background, Motion will do the same.
    Or from within Motion you can apply a mask to an image to have it show whats underneath. Apply the mask using the mask tools in the toolbar to the image, then step over to the Inspector, hit the mask tab and select the type as subtract. That will punch a hole in your image revealing whatever is underneath it.
    thanks

  • Transparent Background from Photoshop Prints with Background in InDesign

    I created a picture in Photoshop with a transparent background.   I saved it as a PDF to hold the transparency and then placed it into an InDesign file that has a blue background.   On screen it looks fine, but when I print it there is a darker blue box around the picture.   Obviously I am looking for the plain blue to show through behind the picture and not the box surrounding it.  How do I remove that?  Thanks for the help.

    Since it depends on how the equipment handles the processing of continuous tone and linework theres no single answer to that. Newer equipment seems to be getting away from the "dual-level" processing (I haven't seen this problem on output in a few years, but that doesn't mean it isn't still out there in some shops).
    If the printer can handle the live transparency, that's a good sign, and you should send a PDF that is not flattened.

  • Permanently removing part of an image from a transparent background png file

    Hello, I think I know the answer to this question, but I wanted to double check.  I am new to Photoshop and do not know all the functions.  I have a png transparent background file of a tree with a lot of branches.  I want to erase some of the branches so they are just permanently gone.  I would like to use this image on different backgrounds so I am looking to just erase the branches all together.  Is this possible?  If not in Photoshop, perhaps another adobe program?  Thank you!

    If you want to permanently delete the branches then you can just erase them using the eraser tool. I would always suggest keeping the original file just in case something goes wrong and you want to start again. So just open the .png, save a new version and start erasing the branches you want.

    to get the transparent effect, you actually code it into the
    surrounding .html using "wmode=transparent" Google that and you
    should fine a tutorial. Remember that when you actually put in
    wmode and its value that you need to paste it in there twice (just
    like all the other tags that are already there).

  • Using PNG files with transparent background - Please Help

    I just purchased Elements to do a very specific task which I can’t do in Aperture. I am a former photoshopper (V.5) and excited to be back.
    I am doing a book/scrapbook and the majority of my text will be my own handwriting. I use white paper and black ink and I scan in at the highest settings. My goal is to create my handwriting on a transparent background so I can place it in my book as I choose. For this specific project (which is very large in scope) I wanted to keep my image/file management within Aperture.
    So I import my file (of my handwriting) from Aperture and successfully saved with a transparent background. Adobe said I had to save it as a PNG file. I noticed when I saved in Photoshop there was a warning saying I had to save as a copy.
    Aperture does not see the file when I try to import it back. My interchange between aperture and photoshop is fine otherwise. This problem only seems to be with “unflattened” layered images. When I flatten the image it is recognized by Aperture, but I lose the transparent background in Photoshop.
    If anyone sees flaws here or has a suggestion to “isolate” and save my personal handwriting image files I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

    Would probably work best if you first export from Aperture as PSD (if possible, like Lightroom) and then save to preserve layers.
    From the PSD save as PNG24 rather than PNG8 which is better for preserving transparency.

  • How to use/create icons with transparent background ?

    I would like to use icons with transparent background on JButtons, but I can't find how to do it. Until now, I've been using the ImageIcon class to create icons from GIF images. These images were created with MSPaint (sorry, I don't know what I could have used instead of that). Here is how I create my buttons :
    bPencil = new JButton(new ImageIcon("Pencil.GIF"));What could I do to make the background transparent and/or what software could I use instead of M$Paint ?
    P.S. : sorry if my question seems silly, but I'm a newbie in Java coding...

    Transparent images are GIF (256 colours) and PNG (true-colour, half transparency).
    You can store the image with your code, *.class files. You then even can deliver all inside a clickable, executable .jar file.
    This kind of usage is called "resource," and hence use getResource like this:
        java.net.URL imgURL = getClass().getResource("pencil.gif");
        ImageIcon icon = null;
        if (imgURL != null) {
            icon = new ImageIcon(imgURL, description);
        }You can use paths.
    There exist versions of MSPaint that easily loose their transparent colour on saving.
    For GIFs try internet palettes, or try to save as PNG (recent version).
    Start with a transparent image from elsewhere.

  • Animated gif with transparent background

    When I import in Keynote an animated gif with transparent background. The background becomes white. I did the following tests:
    If I extract a single image from the animated gif and import it in keynote the background is actually transparent but it becomes white when I import the whole gif.
    I also checked with other applications (NeoOffice) and the animated gif does come out with a transparent background.
    Do I do something wrong in Keynote ?

    This has been an ongoing issue for me since I switched from Powerpoint to Keynote. Most of the animated gifs with transparent backgrounds that I used with Powerpoint are no longer transparent in Keynote. You may want to search for those earlier threads on this topic...
    To summarize: I've had to open up my animated gifs in After Effects and use the Color Key effect to restore transparency, with mixed success.
    Good luck!

  • How to export animated gif with transparent background and glow effect?

    I've been having issues lately with creating animated gifs in flash. I finally figured out a way to export a gif with a transparent background but I'm now having an issue with it again because I'm using a glow effect. When the gif is exported the glow effect changes into a very poor quality and becomes less of a glow and more like a solid color. I've even exported a png sequence from flash and put it into photoshop then created a gif from there but I'm still having the same issue. Is there anyway I can properly export this in gif form so the quality is the same as when I test it in flash?
    I've provided an image of what my issue looks like and the settings (I've messed around with the settings and this is the best I can come up with) . This is in photoshop but the result is similar in flash. The left one is what it originally looks like and the right is what it will look like after exporting. As you can see as I said before the glow changes into more of a solid color kind of like a border. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

    A GIF is limited to 256 colors while a glow effect likely wants to tie up thousands (let's just say 'lots') of variations of tone.

  • How do I import animated gifs into Premiere with a transparent background?

    I have an animated gif that I got from the internet, and I'm trying to import it into Premiere Pro with a transparent background. The gif is of a video game character standing still and blinking. Whenever I import it, it always has a white background, so I need help on how to change that.
    I've gone into Photoshop and removed the white background frame by frame, making it transparent. I do this by using the magic wand tool to select the white background, then hit "delete" to turn it into that diamond grid, which means it's transparent. I then select File -> Save for Web. I preview every frame, and it shows that the backgrounds are transparent. I save it as a gif. But when I import it into Premiere Pro, the white background is still there.
    I've read many forums online about people trying to import images into Premiere Pro with a transparent background, but none of them have explained how to do it specifically for animated gifs. Every answer has always been "export the image as a png, that'll work", and sure enough, I exported a few frames of the gif as pngs, and those few frames had transparent backgrounds in Premiere Pro. But I don't want a png because those aren't animated sequences, those can only be still images. I need to export it as a gif so that it will remain animated, but gif files always have that dreaded white background in Premiere Pro.
    I suppose I could export every frame as a png, import each of those frames into Premiere Pro, then string all the frames together and tweak them so they'll be functionally identical to the animated gif, but that would take forever. I'm making a video project and I need numerous animated gifs to work with, so I don't want to do that with every single one of them. I'm looking for a way to simply import the gifs into Premiere Pro and be done with it. If there is any way to do this, please help me.

    faind on gif transparency and other cartoon animation problems : Adobe After Effects
    " The reason: GIFs don't support alpha channels. Instead, their file structure assigns a certain color value to be read as totally transparent. There aren't any degrees of transparency as you find in graphics formats that do support alpha channels.
    To use an animated gif in AE, you'd first have to create the areas of transparency, then convert the series of images into a graphics format that supports alpha channels, and there are a bunch: PICT, TIFF, TARGA or PNG, to name a few."
