Scanning Printed Text for use in TextEdit

Is there a way to scan a printed document so it can be used as editable text?
I need to bring printed typed letters into TextEdit.
Thank you,
Jesse Tyler

Yes, for that you need Optical Character Recognition software, OCR for short. MacOS X does not have anything like that for scanned input, you need to buy commercial software.
However, I recall that since Panther MacOS X carries a module called Inkwell, were you plugged in a Wacom Tablet and the system would be able to recognize what you hand-wrote. Never had a chance to try it since I don't have a tablet...

  • Scanning Printed Materials for 4K

    Hi there,
    I need to get a number of printed materials (photos, letters, articles etc) scanned by numerous people across the U.S. for a current project.
    I would like to get the material scanned at the highest resolution possible to allow for zooming/re-framing in Premiere.
    I am wondering what is/if there is a recommended dpi for scanning printed materials for 4K screening?
    From calling every place I can find in the first location, for some of the most important material, the highest resolution print/copy places offer seems to be 600dpi.
    I am wondering if 600dpi is usually the max limit for scanning printed materials or if 1200dpi and upwards is typical and I somehow haven't managed to find the right places (although I have called literally every print/scan shop on google for the first city)?
    Many thanks...

    While dpi doesn't apply to video (which measures by pixels), it most certainly matters for scanning stills to be used in the video. The higher the dpi of the scan, the higher the resulting image resolution in pixels. 100dpi would be inadequate for even SD video if using less than an 8x10 source.
    Simple math says scanning dpi x inches (of source photo) = pixels
    An 8 x 10 image scanned at 600dpi would be 4800x6000 pixels. Note that most still images are not a 16:9 format, so the scanned image typically does not "fit" the video screen without some cropping or black edges to make up the difference. The 8x10" scan at 600dpi would work for 4k video, but smaller pics like a 4x6 or 5x7 is going to fall short, so yes you will want to try and scan at 1200dpi. What about wallets? Even at 1200dpi, not much resolution to work with.
    I like the photo idea of shooternz, if the photos can for instance be put on an easel and the still camera on a tripod takes a high megapixel image, if the lighting works without reflections. Might be an good option. I used to "grab" SD stills on a copy stand with a DV camera years ago.
    The maximum frame size that can be imported for still images and movies is 256 megapixels, with a maximum dimension of 32,768 pixels in either direction. Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Importing still images

    You are not addressing Apple here. If you have a problem, describe it and someone might be able to help. Just to be sure, the wi-fi on the phone will go off after the phone goes into sleep mode unless it is actively being used. This is a battery saving measure. If you are actively using the internet, and the phone is still awake, then the wi-fi should remain connected.

  • Removing Printer Profiles for use in PS CS3

    I'm setting up my work flow using PS to manage printing. I have lots of printer profiles accumulated over the years and would like to weed them out. How can I do that? Where are they located in the files? I'm using OS 10.5.2.
    Thanks.

    They're generally located in your Library>ColorSync>Profiles folder, but some are also in the same folder under your User name. Because I make custom profiles for both myself and others, not only inkjets but at least twenty different printing houses and a couple of photo labs here in lo-cal, I have hundreds. What I do is make a new folder called Profiles Disabled and move all the unwanted profiles to that folder. I'm not getting rid of them permanently but getting them out of sight as far as Ps is concerned.

  • Embedding code in text for use in Mail program

    I use Mac Mail. I'd like to be able to create a link in an email that would send people to my website, without mentioning the website. To do this, I need to embed the link, in code, in the text, but I don't know how to do this, or even if it can be done in the Mail program.
    Is anyone good at this kind of thing who could tell me where I can learn how to do this? Or if it can be done in Mac Mail?

  • How to print Text for more than 255 characters.

    Actually I am writing dynamic sql in which some text is assigned to some variables
    and then contacating tohse variables to create one complete SQL. So the text into that variable is more than 25 chars, which i want to print to check wether the sql generated is correct. While doing do I am getting following error.

  • How do I create a print button for use in Interactive PDF?

    I have a document created in InDesign CS4 which I will be converting into an interactive PDF (which has various links added on a master page so they appear on every page), one of which I would like to be a "Print" button.
    I know how to do this in Acrobat Pro, but I don't want to have to create a button in Acrobat and then copy/paste it onto all pages in my document. Surely there must be a way to create a button of this type in InDesign CS4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sorry, no. Print button functionality must be added in Acrobat.

  • How to print text/data in flex 3 using printer???Plz help...

       Hi,
              plz tell me the way to print text/data using printer in flex.  I tried the FlexPrintJob class. but it takes object of a container to be printed & prints the visible content of that container(along with scrollbars), bt i want to print all contents of the container(including invisible).
          I have tried to print bitmap image through FlexPrintJob but it takes lot of time for spooling... So plz help me out in printing(fast with all content) in flash
    I am using flex 3 (flex Builder 3 IDE).
      Thanks in advance!!!

    Hi Sagar,
    Don't worry You can use the below work around to print all the contents of the Container including the invisible contents under scrolll with out scroll bar..
    So what the idea here is we are seeting the container height to full size with out scrolls before sending the container object to printer and as soon as you print the object you are restoring it to the original height with scrolls...so that you can print the full contents without scrolls...
    You may have doubt that by chnaging and restoring the size the user may see momentary resize of the container but it is not so as it is a fraction of a second and user cannot notice this change... Give it a try ..I had already run into this problem recently and I have found a work around for this which is as below:
    // Here mainContainer is the container or box id the contents of which you want to print
       private function doPrintContainer():void
        var printJob:FlexPrintJob = new FlexPrintJob();
        if(printJob.start() != true) return;
        try
         var mainContainerHeight:int = mainContainer.height;
         //Increasing the height of the desired component to be printed.
         mainContainer.height = mainContainer.measuredMinHeight;
         mainContainer.verticalScrollPolicy = "off";
         //Adding the resized Component to our FlexPrintjob and then sending the print request
         printJob.addObject(this,FlexPrintJobScaleType.MATCH_WIDTH);
         printJob.send();
         //Resizing the component back to normal size
         mainContainer.height = mainContainerHeight;
         mainContainer.verticalScrollPolicy = "auto";
        catch(error:Error)
                     trace("Error : " + error.message);

    Hi
    KEEP a BREAK-POINT and debug the internal table lines how it is coming
    some overlap must be happening ..check.
    Also check the code where you are getting this text into internal table.
    1) One way to debug smartform is to debug the Function Module of that smartforms.
    If you want to debug particular smartform node that the solution would be,
    insert a "Program Line" just above the node you want to debug and this program line write a normal abap breakpoint.
    So whenever you call the smartforms, it will stop at this breakpoint and you can debug onwards.
    2) SFTRACE can be used for debugging SMARTFORMS.

  • Use dot matrix printers for printing text reports in Reports 10g

    In Forms 6i, customers had the option to use dot matrix printers for printing text reports.
    I believe, from 9i onwards, text based reports aren’t supported and instead HTML/PDF,DOC,RTF reports are supported which are not text based and use modern day printers.
    Is it still possible to use text printers ??

  • Printing text using jdk 1.4...only first character in string output

    I have read way too many forum postings and still can't get simple ascii to come out my printer. Please don't point me to awt printing samples. I don't want the overhead/baggage of graphics contexts when they shouldn't be needed.
    If I create a printer that's a file (set to generic/ascii), then after printing and giving a filename the file contents look ok. So, this seems to be a DocFlavor issue or something.
    However when I try to print to a network printer (usb attached), I only get at best a single character on my page.
    The following is tracing from my print method (shows text to be printed and doc flavors supported by printer):
    PrinterImpl::print(text=hello world)
    image/gif; class="[B"
    image/gif; class="java.io.InputStream"
    image/gif; class="java.net.URL"
    image/jpeg; class="[B"
    image/jpeg; class="java.io.InputStream"
    image/jpeg; class="java.net.URL"
    image/png; class="[B"
    image/png; class="java.io.InputStream"
    image/png; class="java.net.URL"
    application/x-java-jvm-local-objectref; class="java.awt.print.Pageable"
    application/x-java-jvm-local-objectref; class="java.awt.print.Printable"
    application/octet-stream; class="[B"
    application/octet-stream; class="java.net.URL"
    application/octet-stream; class="java.io.InputStream"
    It appears, that besides copious image printing support (why PNG and not TEXT?!?!?!?) I can print Printable's from the awt api, as well as byte arrays and input streams. I wish to not use the awt printing api.
    I have tried all mentioned DocFlavors regarding BYTE_ARRAY.AUTOSENSE, etc. Nothing gives me more than a single character of output.
    Any ideas? I'm getting a little burnt out on this problem.
    Thanks.

    I cannot comment on the 2 examples you referenced, because I don't have a Postscript printer, but your own example does not work, at least under Win2K, neither on a USB nor an ASCII printer, here is why (aside from the fact that it contains 2 or 3 formal errors).
    I am trying desparately to print a simple ASCII file on a USB printer under Win2K since weeks and found 2 problems, but no solution so far.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Java PrintServiceLookup.lookupPrintServices() returns nothing
    =============================================================
    I want to print a simple ASCII file on a USB printer under Win2K and found 2 problems. Here is the 1st one.
    PrintServiceLookup.lookupPrintServices(<DocFlavor>, <AttributeSet>) returns nothing when I specify any AttributeSet:
    PrintRequestAttributeSet aset = new HashPrintRequestAttributeSet();
    I tried
    aset.add(new Copies(1));
    or
    aset.add(MediaSizeName.ISO_A4);
    I tried it with JDK 1.4.2 and with Java 6, same problem.
    When I specify null for AttributeSet, I get as many services as I have printers specified in the Printers folder of the Control panel.
    I have scanned quite a few contributions about this subject, and it looks like this problem has been around since years, but I haven't found a solution.
    But there is a circumvention of the problem for a parallel printer (at least an HP Laserjet 4 Plus): forget lookupPrintServices, just use the default printer. It works. Here are the essential code lines to print a simple ASCII file in Win2K.
    //String fileID = = args[0];
    FileInputStream textStream = new FileInputStream(fileID);
    PrintService defService = PrintServiceLookup.lookupDefaultPrintService();
    DocFlavor myFormat = DocFlavor.INPUT_STREAM.AUTOSENSE;
    PrintRequestAttributeSet aset = new HashPrintRequestAttributeSet();
    aset.add(MediaSizeName.ISO_A4);
    DocPrintJob job = defService.createPrintJob();
    Doc myDoc = new SimpleDoc(textStream, myFormat, null);
    try {
    job.print(myDoc, aset);
    } catch (PrintException pe) {
    System.out.println(pe.toString());
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Cannot print on a USB printer with Java PrintService
    ====================================================
    I want to print a simple ASCII file on a USB printer under Win2K and
    found 2 problems. Here is the 2nd one.
    Even though
    PrintServiceLookup.lookupPrintServices(<DocFlavor>, <AttributeSet>)
    returns nothing when I specify any AttributeSet, I can still print on the default printer, which I get by
    PrintService defServicedefService = PrintServiceLookup.lookupDefaultPrintService();
    but only on a parallel printer (HP Laserjet 4 Plus), either directly attached or over the network. When I try the very same code on a locally USB-attached printer, the printer is obviously reacting, but nothing is printed.
    In case of a Lexmark 730 (an ink printer), the driver even lies, it has printed 100%,
    on a Samsung CLP-510 (a color laser) the ready light flashes twice, that's all.
    The file to be printed has 5 lines and a "0C"X at the end in order to force a page eject at the end.
    I tried it with JDK 1.4.2 and with Java 6, same problem.
    I should mention that I can print that little file out of the editor Textpad without any problem.

  • How do I scan to text using OCR on the Envy 5660?

    Hello,
    Prior to ordering an HP Envy 5660 printer, I confirmed that OCR text recognition is expressly included in the Printer Specifications for the HP ENVY 5640, 5660, 7640, and Officejet 5740 and 8040 e-All-in-One Printer Series document here.
    As you can see, under Scanning Specifications, which apply to all models listed in the above document’s title, it says: "Scan to text: Integrated OCR software automatically converts scanned text to editable text."
    I have now received and set up the HP Envy 5660 printer that I ordered. It is connected via USB to a MacBook Pro running Mavericks (OS X 10.9.5). After clicking the Download HP Software link on the accompanying CD, I was automatically connected to HP's Product Setup area, from where I obtained the latest driver package for my operating system, "HP-ENVY-5660-series_v12.39.0.dmg." Using the "Custom Install" option, I installed “Essential Software,” “HP Scan,” and “Product Help."
    The print and scan functions on my HP Envy 5660 are working, but regardless of whether I scan a page of text via the printer’s control panel, or the installed “HP Scan” application, or the installed “Image Capture” application, I can find no evidence of integrated OCR software, and no option to convert scanned text to editable text.
    Please tell me where to locate the specified OCR software, and how to enable its operation on the Envy 5660.
    Thank you.

    Greetings, @TeaMasterLing , welcome to the community!
    I read through your post about how you are attempting to use OCR software that was to be included with your printer software installation. I was unable to recreate this situation here on my lab computer to see what you are seeing on your end.
    For that reason, I cannot provide you with a possible solution and would suggest calling in to phone support, as they can log on to your computer if need be to see how the issue could be resolved to have the OCR software working for you.
