Scanning Question: OCR software, Vuescan

Is there any OCR scanning software for the Mac besides OmniPage?
I'm taking a look at Vuescan for graphics scanning, but I couldn't tell from its web site whether it includes its own OCR program as well. Can anyone who uses it let me know? (I know I can email the developer, but since this is a non-technical question, I thought I'd check here first.)

Thanks for the reply mreed. I have looked at ReadIRIS Pro on versiontracker. From my research, I see that we Mac owners apparently have only 4 choices for OCR software:
1. ReadIRIS Pro -- $130.00 (yes, it is rather pricey when I consider that OmniPage SE came with my scanner for free). Ave. user rating on versiontracker -- 1.7 stars (beating OmniPage Pro X by a hair. OmniPage rated 1.6 stars). USER COMMENTS: Quirky, several said it crashes half the time (and not just on Intel Macs) and is very slow. One commenter attributed this to the fact that it's really a Windows program "adapted" for the Mac without a true Mac interface. Pluses: Excellent OCR quality: handles paragraph alignment, font style, and zoning better than Omnipage Pro X (though Omnipage has better OCR proofing).
2. WorkingPapers ver. 2.2.2 -- $99.00. Ave. user rating on versiontracker -- 3.9 stars. USER COMMENTS: Works with even the oldest scanners, easy to use (virtually no learning curve), and is really the only decent OCR out there for the Mac. Negatives: Doesn't appear to have a demo, there has been no update since 2004, and the recognition of previously scanned TIFFs is poor.
3. OmniPage Pro X -- $500.00 (gasp!) Ave. user rating on versiontracker -- 1.6 stars. USER COMMENTS: Has not been updated for Mac since 2002.
4. OCR engine in DevonThink Pro Office -- don't have a price or versiontracker rating. While Devon is a Mac-only company, they didn't develop their own OCR engine. They're using (or will be using?) the IRIS OCR engine. USER COMMENTS: The version of IRIS in DevonThink isn't all that flexible: "You can't pick and choose as you can in ReadIRIS, nor can you tell it what is a table and what isn't - and it's a LOT slower... DevonThink offers no real OCR options other than full automatic."
So, after looking into this, I agree with the consensus that Windows users have a lot more options in the OCR department. One reviewer praised Visioneer PaperPort (now owned by ScanSoft/Nuance, as is OmniPage), which he used to use on his Windows computer, saying it had an intuitive and elegant interface and simple but powerful features that he wishes Mac OCR developers would emulate.
If someone develops a really good full-featured OCR program for the Mac (please ... without the Windows 95-era GUI of OmniPage), that person would make a fortune. I wish someone would invent one that could let me keep behind-text graphics. In OmniPage SE, if graphics are behind text (like a watermark), you can keep one or the other in the finished document, but not both. Adobe Acrobat can turn image-PDFs into text-PDFs AND retain background graphics, but I don't want to pay all that money for it if that's the only purpose for which I'll use it. I guess I'll have to stay with my freebie OmniPage SE for now.

  • Hp scan application cannot detect the OCR software

Since I converted to Windows 8.1 I am unable to scan the document to my computer from the printers control panel, only from the HP software.   When I attempt to scan from the control panel I receive an error "hp scan application cannot detect the OCR software check the computer screen for more details" but nothing pops up.   Is there a fix?

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @SJChamber !
I saw your post about how you are now seeing a message stating "hp scan application cannot detect the OCR software check the computer screen for more details", when attempting to scan to your Windows 8.1 system.
    I will try to help!
I am thinking that the full feature software may not be fully installed on your system, as the OCR software is included in the software.
In having said that, try downloading the full driver and run through the installation here:
HP Officejet Full Feature Software and Driver
Try scanning from the printer software afterwards, and also try a scan from the front panel of your printer.
    Let me know the results!

  • How do I convert the text on a scanned in email? Is there a good free OCR software?

I have an email that I need the wording in the email changed,  Is there a good free OCR software that i can use?  I really dont know what im doing and can use any and all the help I can get!!.. Thanks in advance..pete

Indeed, you can set the strings for the on and off state, but it will
only show the default off state text when running on a pocketPC. A
solution is to use two buttons: one to turn on and another to turn off.
By overlaying the two controls and hiding the last pushed button, you
can actually simulate a single button. See attachment (LV7.1).

    Hi,
An OCR software i integrated within the HP Scan Software.
Within the Applications folder locate the Hewlett-Packard folder and launch the HP Scan software.
Once completing the scan you may select RTF or TXT files which will save the scan by processing OCR.
If you do not have the HP Scan software installed be sure to install the following software by checking the HP Scan option during the installation:

I have an HP  Photosmart 7510 printer and would like to use optical character recognition (OCR) software supported by HP. Please can advise whether HP software is available?

    Hello,
To my understanding the Photosmart 7510 has an OCR program.
If you want to use the OCR program, then you will have to scan.
Place a document on the scanner .
on the PC desktop, click on the Printer icon Photosmart 7510 icon.
Click on the Scan document or photo link
Select "Scan to rtf / Ocr ", then click NEXT .
A preview of the original will be displayed , then click SAVE .
The scanned document will now be opened in WORD program, where in giving you the opportunity to edit the TEXT .

  • Trying to scan to OCR

Using Preview to access the scanning software on HP C5180 Photosmart printer/scanner/copier. Trying to use Optical Character Recognition. Want to scan with OCR going to Open Office to edit later. all I can get is a picture that can be moved or resized. When I go to Open Office, I get an error when it is done with the scanning process. Did use TEXT in the scan software.

I thought Preview and Image capture were supposed to be used in scanning with Snow Leopard. Anything else work?
Preview and Image Capture are the built-in solutions. But you are not limited to them. Just as you can browse the web with Firefox or Chrome instead of the built-in Safari, you can scan with any app that works, like the software that came on the disk with the scanner, or a app like VueScan or Silverfast. For OCR, you might get the best results by installing the Mac software that came with the scanner. I know there was definitely Mac software that came with my mom's HP scanner.

  • Ocr software for pixma mg4120

ocr software for pix ma mg4120

    Hi cdmead,
The MP Navigator EX can be used for basic OCR functions. Scan text in scanned magazines and newspapers and display it in Notepad (included with Windows).
    Important
PDF files cannot be converted to text.
Text conversion may not be possible depending on the selected image's data size.
Scan documents into MP Navigator EX and save them, then open the View & Use window from the Navigation Mode screen and select the image you want to convert to text.
    Note
In the Photos/Documents (Platen) screen of the Scan/Import window, select Text(OCR) for Document Type. Text conversion may not be performed correctly if you select an option other than Text(OCR). You cannot select Text(OCR) when the Compress scanned images when transferring checkbox is selected on the "General Tab" of the Preferences dialog box.
Click Edit/Convert, then click Convert to text file on the list.
Notepad (included with Windows) starts and editable text appears.
    Note
Only text written in languages that can be selected on the General tab of the Preferences dialog box can be extracted to Notepad (included with Windows). Click Set... on the General tab and specify the language according to the language of the document to be scanned.
When scanning multiple documents, you can collect the extracted text into one file.
Text displayed in Notepad (included with Windows) is for guidance only. Text in the image of the following types of documents may not be detected correctly.
    - Documents containing text with font size outside the range of 8 points to 40 points (at 300 dpi)
    - Slanted documents
    - Documents placed upside down or documents with text in the wrong orientation (rotated characters)
    - Documents containing special fonts, effects, italics, or hand-written text
    - Documents with narrow line spacing
    - Documents with colors in the background of text
    - Documents containing multiple languages
    Note
You can also scan a text document from the OCR dialog box in One-click Mode and extract the text in the image to display it in Notepad (included with Windows).

  • Bootcamp XP partition size for OCR software and Outlook

    Hello,
I need to run OCR software (Abbyy Finereader 9) and Microsoft Outlook email on my Mac. How much space should I partition for Windows XP when setting up Bootcamp? I will eventually use Parallels/VMwareFusion.
Specs needed for OCR: 512 MB of RAM, plus 512 MB of RAM for each additional processor core.
500 MB of hard-disk space for typical installation and 512 MB of hard-disk space for program operation.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You realize we are talking GBs of RAM and hard drive space, but you don't say how much you have free now, how much Mac is using, but I can tell you far too many look at how small and then want to resize, rather than give it 2x what you think you need, an old 'rule of thumb.'
Apple's mininum is too low, which is 10GB. XP SP3 and updates ?
So, first question, how large a hard drive do you have?
    Did you backup already?
I'd set aside 30GB as NTFS as a starting point.

    Hi,
I've just installed my OJ 6500 e709n and would like to scan  some text.  The documentation refers to importing scanned text with OCR software.  During the install there was a pop up indicating that I.R.I.S. software was being installed, although a search of the help files doesn't show any references to I.R.I.S.  Google searches indicate that the I.R.I.S. software should be started seperately and used to trigger the scan, but there are no icons on the desktop, in the start center, or in c:/programs.
How do I proceed?  Do I need to delete and reinstall?

  • General Scanning Question

Not sure this belongs in the Apple forums - don't see a forum here this fits.
I have an older Umax Astra 6450 FW scanner. Seems to do an adequate job, but have noticed from time to time I have to remove the glass bed and clean it. Some how a 'haze' develops on the under side of the glass. Also, I wonder about it's speed when I want a high res photo scan. It's been a while but memory says it can take a minute or longer. Does the cpu have bearing on scan speed? I have pretty much only used Vuescan as my software.
I'm intending to put it (or another scanner) through some grueling paces soon, I would like to scan decades worth of old photos. I hesitate to guess how many, but could be 1000.
Pointers, tips, suggestions .... maybe there's another forum somewhere I should try this?
    Thank you

    a brody wrote:
It only supports Mac OS 9 which won't run on a MacBook Pro, and Windows XP, which will during Boot Camp. If you are going to make thousands of scans, you would do well to find a compatible feeder scanner, if you can find one that keeps the photos flat. Epson makes a few that might work.
Pardon me, but I don't know what 'It' are you referring to? It - the scanner and It - the software (Vuescan) work fine on my MBP 10.5.6
Please, I did a quick google search of 'feeder scanner' and didn't learn much. Could you expound a bit on why you suggest the feeder type? Is it a speed issue, quality issue??
    Thank you for the reply.
I just did a sample scan at 300 dpi and it took about 20 - 30 seconds (got distracted as it finished).

  • Scanning in OCR (optical Character Reading) mode

    Dear Sirs,
My printer HP 4507 cannot scan in OCR mode even though I choose the option (HP ENVY 4500 series software and HP 4507 printer) "Document to File" (PDF), output type:Black&White, resolution:200 dpi, Item Type: Document, File Type: PDF.
After scanning process, at the end, even in PDF File type the character are scanned as image only not in the text mode.  In another words, I cannot copy the text from PDF file to MS Word processor.
If I am to acquire OCR software first to perform scanning in text mode, where can I obtain this OCR software for HP 4507 printer?
Microsoft Office Document Scanning application cannot recognize or find the HP  4507 Scanner when it was supposed to.
In this matter, a support would be much appreaciated.
    With regards,
    rakam

    Hello rakam,
The HP Envy 4500 model does not support any OCR functionality withn the HP Software, for that you wlill need any 3rd party software which support a such.
You may use any 3rd part OCR solution to scan as editable text.
If you have Microsoft Office suite there is a good chance the office suite provide this kind of capabilities:
    Office 2007 or 2010:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14595/ocr-anything-with-onenote-2007-and-2010/
    Office 2003:
    http://agsci.psu.edu/it/how-to/perform-ocr-with-microsoft-office-2003-document-imaging
As I understand you experience issues with the solutions above, that may happen due to non-working Windows Services.
Follow these steps which might be applicable for a such, as well ensure the Windows Service as described within Solution 3:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03586087/
For any issues, let me know what connection type you use, as well disable any firewall software is used and try again.
