Scanning to FTP

Hi Guys, I am a remote worker that needs to be able to scan legal documents into my employers corporate data, my IT department dont like the idea of setting up a VPN from the local machine to gain access scans folder and being on a different network this causes headaches.
What they have said is that I can setup my printer to scan to FTP and this will send all of my papers to the folders they require.
Unfortunately my HP M276N supports scan folder, can I configure the printer to point to FTP site instead of a network folder?

I afradi not, Scanning to an FTP server is a completely different feature which is provided by higher end Laserjet MFPs.
The M276 only support scannign to a shared folder on a local network using SMB, it does not offer direct scanning to an FTP server.
You may setup an outgoing SMTP account and use the Scan to Email feature instead, that allow scannng remotely by sending the scan via email automatically, that should meet better such a need to scan to a remote location.

However I can scan to FTP in Windows.

What do you mean scan to FTP in Windows? I really can't wrap my head around how this works exactly.
The Windows box is an FTP server and the scanner FTPs the files to it or you run an FTP client on the Windows box and FTP into the scanner and get the files?

Workcentre 3220 - Unable to scan to ftp

You need to provide much more detail:What is the FTP server running?What port?FTP or sFTP?Using IP address or Hostname?How have you formatted the path on the webui of the printer?Are you adding leading and trailing slashes ala /Folder one/Folder2/ or no?Are you using a login or attempting to do this with Anonymous?Is the Gateway and Time and Subnet correct on the device? If using Hostname is DNS setup properly for the internal network?

Document scanning in APEX

I'm working on an CRM/accounting application. One of my wishes is to use OCR or document scanning in the app. The idea is that a user is able to take a picture of a quote (using her mobile phone). The picture should be uploaded to the database and relevant data, such as quote number, amount- and account details, should be interpreted and stored in the database. The application will be designed for desktop primarly, but parts will be available for tablet/mobile as well.
What I want to know for now is:
- Does anyone have hands one experience with such a requirement and can you please give me some pointers/warnings for pitfalls?
- Can anyone recommend a proper OCR sdk? Open source is a must. I've read some mixed reviews about Tesseract.
- My first idea would be to convert the image to xml so I can use xmlDB for further implementation and storage. Is that a necessity, or isn't it that important?

Oracle 12c DBFS exposes a database table as a filesystem which can be "exported" as WebDAV or FTP.
Most MFPs can be configured to "scan to ftp". This works
an actual FTP client seems to not work, but if you PUT the file directly "PUT local /mnt/ftp1/dir/place/filename.pdf", that will work.
WebDAV is problematic due to Win7+ "secure link only" requirements. I haven't tried setting up a secure-WebDAV (secure XDB) yet.

You'll need to test making the call-out to see how long it takes.
You may have to do it as a background job.
Only other idea is to investigate how to integrate that process with Oracle Text Indexing.
I'm aware Oracle Text has an API to add your own "proprietary document format to series of text to be used for indexing".
In your case, this process would be the callout to the OCR.
I haven't tried any of that, but the theory sounds good.

nope. two different data types.
However, you can attach XML data to Image. DICOM (orddicom) is one standard.
You would be better off storing all the data in a table and using Oracle Text (with your add-on) to index the blob column

Has anyone successfully set up scan to smb to mac os 10.7.x from a Konica Minolta bizhub. I'm using 10.7.3 on MacBook Pro. Don't care what model bizhub is being used as I have access to many. I've seen the posts for FTP workarounds but want to use SMB if that is an option. Any suggestions? Thank you!

The issue has nothing to do with the format of the user authentication. What you are reading is about the Lion Mac connecting to a Windows computer that is part of domain or workgroup. The method changed slightly compared to Snow Leopard.
KM does support FTP so that is still an option, but I would ideally would like to set up SMB scanning. I'm not sure if KM is going to support AFP anytime soon.
With the lack of SMB support and KM offering no alternative at this stage then I suggest you look at using FTP. While Lion removed the option to enable FTP via the Sharing pane in System Preferences, it can still be enabled via Terminal using the following command
sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
You will be prompted to authenticate using your Mac's admin account & password. Once this is done, you can then configure the address on the copier to push scan using FTP. The keys are;
The host name requires just the IP address. No leading slashes like SMB
The path will be the folder that you want to scan to, also entered without a leading slash. For example, Desktop
The user name will be the short name of the account who's folder you want to scan to.
The only other option may be WebDAV if the KM supports it. We have this with our imageRUNNER ADVANCE and with a document scanned to a shared folder in the copier hard drive, we can then connect to that folder by using Finder's > Go > Connect to Server facility. You then just enter
http://ipaddress/share
which connects you to the shared folder and lets you see the document you scanned. You also have the facility to set subfolders for security of users documents.

Lexmark X502N scanning

Does anyone have the scanner working? scan to PC, scan to email, scan to FTP.
I have been trying to get this working for a week now with no success.
I may have to return this a get another MFP, any suggestions?

OK, here's what you need to do, based on the above people's comments and some minor research of my own:
1) Reinstall the Lexmark x500 series drivers (not sure if this step is necessary, but I think it is). You can find them on their website.
2) Go to the Terminal application found in your applications folder (or use Spotlight Command-Space Bar and type terminal, click on Terminal).
3) You need to enable your own root privileges (had to search around to figure out how to do this): type: "sudo tcsh" then Enter and then authenticate with your admin password when it asks you to.
3) Then, set the the driver's directory and its contents to root:admin (user:group) by entering the following into the terminal (and pressing enter):
chown -R root:admin /Library/Printers/Lexmark/LexmarkX500MFP
(make sure to type Enter and then wait a bit).
4) then type "exit"
5) close the Terminal application.
It seems to do the trick even though Lexmark's own tech support had no solution:
"I really do apologize for this inconvenience, our Product Engineers still working on it and we still don't have any updates. We will be posting it on our website once we have the driver. You can use Generic PostCript driver."
Thanks to Beerlao (above poster) for his troubleshooting this solution.
The lexmark utility does not work, however, so ink levels and all that stuff is not available.

FTP Service misbehaving after upgrade to Leopard server

After upgrading my server from 10.4 to 10.5, FTP services were running even though it was not present in the Server Manager. After adding it to the Server Manager non admin ftp clients logging in had full access to the root. I've shut down the FTP service in Server Manager but the service is still available. I've had to close the port on the firewall until I can figure out how to fix it.
Is there an way to configure ftp through terminal, or remove the old configuration and start over?

Please excuse what may be an obvious question, but what do you mean by "access to root"? The users can create files anywhere? The users have access to the / root directory?
If the users can get anywhere (and it seems that they have access akin to the root password) then check the protections on the files and directories.
The ftp "share" model is soft protection; folks that have ftp credentials can often log in and access other areas directly. (sftp doesn't have the share-like model layered on, which causes folks that expect ftp to work like "mount points" to be concerned.)
What interests me most is that ftp is running even though it's indicated as shut off. Given that ftp exposes access credentials in cleartext, anybody that's scanned your ftp connection off a coffee shop WiFi access can access the target server. Which is why getting hacked is more of a possibility than it might seem. Any of the WiFi-scanning tools know how to scan for ftp passwords, too.
If it's working as expected, ftp creates error and access logs. See if there's anything interesting there.

Can't ping or get printer web page or print via hostname

Ok, this has me stupped on my iMac running Mavericks. I just added my Kyocera printer as an IP printer but used the host name instead of an IP address, sounds simple so far.
Before doing this, I change the default host name in the Kyocera printer to "Kyocera" (without quotations). Add printer found the device and came up with the correct PPD for the model number and all was good at this point. I sent a printer test page which again worked fine.
I then opened Safari and entered the printers IP address to make sure I could bring up the configuration web page for the device and this indeed works fine, at this point I retype the address in the address bar as Kyocera.local and again the page refreshed and came up fine, Yippee!! so I added it to Safari's Favourites Bar, all good!
Since then, I can still get to the devices home config page via the IP address, but it will no longer find the page via the save Kyocera.local link in the favorites bar or retyping it in the address bar.
I have tried network utility and pinging the device, IP address ping works fine but Kyocera.local says unknown host. Tried the next obvious step and that was to see if printing fails now as well and indeed it too fails as it was still configured to print to the host name as it was when I successfully printed the inbuilt printer test page. I deleted the printer and added the IP printer via the IP address not the hostname and printer now prints fine.
Does anyone know why printing via the host name and bringing up the printers config web page both worked for the first time but fails from there on in????
DNS settings were set to Auto from ISP, I also tried google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and even just adding the local bob router address in as an option but nothing works, but it did initially.
I install and repair printers for a living and have come across this when installing scan to FTP on a mac and rarely if ever can I get it to work scanning to FTP via the Mac's name for example, Jims-imac.local, just won't find it with or without the .local, but change it to the Mac's IP address and scan to FTP works great. Problem is that if the customer has their Mac getting IP address via DHCP, I have to advise the customer that if scan to FTP stops working, to check that the IP address on the Mac has not changed, and if it has, then change the scan to FTP settings on the scanner to the new IP address that the Mac has now been given from the DHCP server.
Not the best way to go about it. Why can't Mac's just find devices and devices find Mac's? Windows is so straight forward, what am I missing?

First of all let me clarify your trial.
Where is your monitoring server?
Is it behind inside or outside interface (please share ip adress)?
From config it seems, it can be reach via outside interface. Then you have to make snmp check on outside interface, not on inside (cannot make a snmp/ping check on inside interface with request comming through outside inteface - it simply won't work).
From the first check of routing table, I would suggest:
delete : route outside MCCC_Outside 255.255.255.255 1.1.1.1 1 - doesn't make a sense route host address, when it's directly connected network (and more, route 1.1.1.2 to 1.1.1.1, when 1.1.1.1 is vlan2 interface)
change : route outside 172.31.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.1 1; route outside Domain 255.255.0.0 192.168.1.1 1 - you should consider route it to 1.1.1.2 (if this is your next hop address at WAN).
route outside VLAN10 255.255.255.0 MCCC_Outside 1 - why?
I would use default route to somewhere at 1.1.1.0/24 range - next hop (router).

Looking for a MFC, printer/scanner

I am looking for an all in one printer scanner. I need both the printer and the scanner to work in arch linux, and I don't want to spend a week making it happen. I would prefer something that supports ethernet and both features work over the network but that isn't absolutely necessary. After wasting 2 hours looking at printers then looking up their linux support I decided to ask you guys. What do you use that meets my requirements? would you recommend it to someone who hadn't just killed your cat?

I can confirm that the HP drivers for Windows suck big time. When I turned on my new printer, I first installed it on my laptop. I ran a pacman -S hplip, ran the software, detected my printer over wireless, and was ready within a minute or so. Then I installed the printer on my desktop archer. Same results: I was ready within a minute. Then I booted into Windows XP. I had to download some serious MBs, and when I executed the exe file, installation was aborted halfway, because Windows were not installed on C:. After long research, I found the cure, which was a joke. I had to mount my system drive (E:) as a network drive and perform the installation in there LOL. Anyways, after installation, my whole system was getting very jerky and unresponsive, and cpu usage was getting very high. Didn't bother any more, just uninstalled it completely. Not much of a problem, though, since I have to use Windows rarely for a couple of apps.

I'm triing to setup our plotter scan to ftp but I don't recall the user name / passoword.
I did try the defult settings
User Name: admin
Password: (left empty)
which didnt work so I may have created a password but I don't recall what it was.
Is there a reset or forgot password option?

What is the best multifunction printer for Mac?

I'm currently trying to choose a great multifunction printer for our small office and I need advice on what brands are "fully" compatible with Mac OSX 10.4 and higher. I would like to know what your experiences are with certain brands and models.
In my particular situation I have a list of requirements in order of importance:
1. fully compatible with the Mac OSX 10.4 (and higher) operating system.
2. affordable (that's very subjective but for me that would mean something below US$600)
3. monochromatic laser printing
4. network printing: LAN or wifi (wifi preferable? are there disadvantages?)
5. duplex printing
6. duplex copying
7. +/- 30 ppm or cpm
8. scan to ftp or to hard disk (without the need for additional software preferable)
9. network scanning
10. toner and drum in one
11. faxing
Please also state what you found great with your machine.

I don't have a home office - nor do I have any experience in printers the way some reviewers do. When it comes to printing, all I care is that it actually prints and doesn't jam.
Printers are so inexpensive these days and my old printer was a great Cannon that did it's job - cost about 80 bucks when I purchased. Then I bought an iPad and tried ALL the free printing apps - and even paid for an app that swore it would work with any printer. NOPE.
So, when this printer came up to test - I jumped on it! WOW. Not only is it so easy to set up, even I can do it (didn't even need the disk). It prints anywhere from my iPad and my iPhone. I also love the double sided printing and never realized how much double siding printing I actually do. It's great for long recipes. The photo aspect of it is sharp and clear. I LOVE The scanner and though I rarely use a fax - it's nice to know it's available so I don't have to drive to my local media store. For the price - it's amazing.
It's also super fast compared to my Cannon and super quiet.
I've started recommending this to my friends - even though they may not do much printing - it's amazing how much you'll start printing once you have this super hero. Kind of like my Kindle - I read way more books now than I did when reading hard/paper backs!!!.

Using ftp to Scan to iMac

I have a networked Dell printer with a scanner. Before I switched to my new iMac with Leopard, I used "SMB to scan to computer," with the result being that the docs just scaned to a folder on my HDD.
But now with the iMac and Leopard all I get is "Login Error." Dell says that I have to use ftp to scan to a Mac, but then they keep sending me screenshots of how to set it up in Tiger. There's no one at Dell who knows bupkus about Leopard. I have the correct ip address for the machine.
I suspect that it's a sharing error but the mc info tells me a couple of different possible names for my pc. But I can't tell for sure.

First I need to correct myself... my G3 is running System 8.5, not 8.1 as I originally posted.
Now, some more info...
I have OpenTransport on the G3, version 2.something. I also have AppleShare, but it's version 3.8.1. I do not have NetworkBrowser. I only have the Chooser.
Currently, my iMac has Filesharing and FTP Access turned on in the Sharing control panel. "Built-in Ethernet" is also turned on in the Network control panel.
On the G3, when I open Chooser and click on AppleShare, the name of my iMac shows up in the file server list. Double-clicking it, or clicking the "open" button, brings up the connection dialog. I enter my user name and password, but when I click the "connect" button it tells me that the password is incorrect. I've tried changing the password on the iMac, and then using the new password, but still it insists that the password is incorrect.
So that's where I'm stuck, and I don't know how to get past it.

Can SCAN IP be used for ftp of files

You can also check output command "ifconfig -a" when rac services are not running. If you are planning for failover scenarios , it is reasonably.

Recover the backup you made before you installed. If you didn't backup, make a backup down, and selectively recover pieces of the backup that will work with the older operating system after erase and reinstalling 10.6. See my backup FAQ*:

Before you do, you may find your scanner preferences in your printer just need to be set in the Print & Scan preferences in Apple menu -> System Preferences, or some open source scanner and printer drivers can work better*: http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html

And in the future ALWAYS backup your data before you install anything. That way you can recover where you went before. Don't cross post in the forum if you can avoid it. Remember this is a user to user forum, so responses may take awhile if you didn't post in an area that really is related to your question. Issues with Lion are best handled in the Lion forum. But as long as I have a chance, I'll respond to this thread.

AirPort Extreme FTP port is open when doing Remote Port Scan

I have a question regarding the AirPort Extreme Base stations running firmware 7.7.3. Currently the AirPort is not port-mapping any services, however when I do a remote port scan of that particular AirPort I have noticed some TCP ports are open from the outside, such as FTP port 21, RTSP port 554 and ARCP port 7070. Why is that? I thought the AEBS blocks these services by default, unless otherwise configured to be open. Is this a vulnerability with the firmware?

Your 554 and 7070 may be open due to links to itunes store. It is not a big vulnerability since it is for streaming.
Port 21 is more a concern.. It is used internally by the AE apparently.. but I really do not know why. FTP as a protocol is not offered to the outside world. so you cannot connect to it and get info for files.. even if you have a hard disk plugged in. Why it should be open to the outside world I am not sure.
Do you have BTMM turned on? It may be involved with remote services.
If you are concerned it is not hard to fix.. port map those ports to a non-existent client in the network.. however your itunes store connection might stop working as well as some other things... that need those ports open.. There is also a good chance you cannot map them when they are used.. so do a factory reset and before you setup other applications or BTMM do the port map and see what happens.
You can also post the details to apple directly but I honestly doubt you are facing any big issues here.
