Scanning to iphoto

I am having trouble scanning with my HP 2410 all in one. (I know, it is an ancient--in technology years--machine, but it works and I want to use it.) I am using OS 10.5.5 and have installed the recommended updates. I can scan photos, but it takes many steps to get my photos to iphoto and I am sure there is an easier way. I have called HP and after giving them my info and a detailed description of my problem, they said I had to pay for help or go online for help. Then I tried the chat option and after providing my info and a detailed description of my problem and waiting forever and a day for someone to begin the chat process, I was told they don't support Mac users. Then I tried the email option and am still waiting for support...Seriously.
I have always gotten great advice from this forum and am hoping I can get some answers here. Here are the steps I am taking in order to scan a photo to iphoto...
1)use HP Scan and choose preview scan (wait for the scanner to do his thing.)
2)change the scan area even though I have auto crop selected, never seems to choose the correct area
3)"accept" and wait for scanner to do his thing again--btw, I have jpeg to HP Gallery selected because I don't think I want to "save as" or "print" (but I could be wrong)
4)HP Photo and Imaging Gallery opens and I select save as then go to the second pull down menu and select auto import (I have tried to change the setting to do this automatically, but can't figure out how. I have to do this every time I scan a photo.) It automatically goes to Archive, but I don't think that is where I want it, but once again, I could be wrong!
5)open iphoto to make sure the photo is popping up there.
Again, this works, but with a pile of photos to scan, this is a maddening process and I am sure it could be much easier if my settings were changed. I have fiddled with it quite a bit with no luck.
Please help.

So after a couple of email exchanges with HP support, they informed me that my HP would print but I would not be able to scan with it. I guess they missed the part of my message that said I was scanning with it...

  • Slow Launch and Scan of iPhoto Videos

When I launch iMovie 11 (9.0.4), the app launches very quickly, but then beachballs for over a minute while my iPhoto Videos load. Previously, iMovie would ask if I'd like to build thumbnails and I'd answer no, and then manually import only the videos I wanted to work with. Now, I'm never prompted to build thumbnails and it seems iMovie is scanning my iPhoto library everytime the app launches.
Is this normal behaviour for 9.0.4 and is there any way to speed things up?

Someone else was having a related, though not quite the same issue with iPhoto Videos. I did a lookup on Google to see what some people recommend and found this on the MacRumours forums: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=477746. It seems pretty drastic to pull the videos out of iPhoto just to get them to disappear in iMovie, but that's what one person that forum was suggesting. It would be way better if there was a switch that turned off the monitoring of the iPhoto Video folder in iMovie, that's for sure.

  • Using Photoshop Elements to scan but iphoto for slideshow

I use an Epson V600 to scan old photos, which runs on a Photoshop Elements program. I am creating a slideshow for my grandmother's 90th birthday party, and I prefer to use iphoto for the slideshow. What is the best FORMAT for the photos as they are scanned, and how do I transfer to iphoto? Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Scan the photos and save them in a folder. When you're finished scanning import that folder into iPhoto. This will give you just one Event with the photos in it. If you import each photo after it is scanned you'll end up with a separate event for each photo which can be a bit of a pain.

  • Photos scanned to iPhoto Library can't be found!

I scanned some photos from my new Canon CanoScan 8800F, using both the PhotoStudio and Photoshop Elements 4.0 programs that came with the scanner. I saved them to my iPhoto Library, but when I go to iPhoto they are nowhere to be found, in the Last Import or anywhere else. When I try to import them using File>Import feature, they show up but are grayed out, as they are if I look for them in the Finder. However, I can still open them up in both PhotoStudio and Photoshop. So, I then copied them to my desktop from those programs and tried to drag them into iPhoto - whereupon iPhoto says they are already there! I scanned them as jpegs, and the first 4 or 5 photos I scanned worked just fine. Shut down and reopened iPhoto - no dice. ARGHHHH! Please help! Thanks.

Rule 1 - Never, Never, Never modify the content of the iPhoto library - doing so will not work and may corrupt your library
Since you have places photo in the iPhoto library that it does not know about you must remove them from the iphoto library - backup first and be extremely careful not to make any other changes - and then import them to iPhoto.
iPhoto is a database and for it to know about photos they must be imported into iPhoto - and you can not import photos from within the iPhoto library into the iPhoto library

  • Scanning into iPhoto -where are files landing, and how to get copies?

Maybe if I describe my current situation, I can better understand what a good way of maintaining the archive of photos I've kept for 13 years is in a cross-platform manner. I just scanned a photo, and chose to tell the scanning software to send it into iPhoto. There it ends up in the package, in folders like Originals>>2009>>May 25, 2009 and May 25, 2009_2 for the second scan, etc, etc.
So I can either copy the files that are in those folders to the desktop, taking care not to remove or delete them, and then push them into my archive in the folders I want them, or I could save out each one as it hits iPhoto, using the Export function. I've got 18 years of film photos I'm going through to add to my digital archive the best memories of my wife, who recently passed. So if I find one of us at Fallen Leaf Lake in 1995, I want to shove it into my archive folder in a folder called 1995, and it's subfolder Summer. iPhoto has been a godsend in this project, but I also want to continue maintaining my application-independent archive, and am thinking that maybe saving out each photo as it hits iPhoto is the way to go. And is it possible I'm just not getting how to scan a bunch of related photos at once and have them all land in the same folder or event?
With every photo getting it's own folder in the package, today's date in the metadata, and it's own new "untitled event", I'm finding it difficult to make much progress.

Okay I've figured out a way to work with the scanned photo files before iPhoto. But what do I do to get them into iPhoto in a way that makes sense? I've got film-only photos I need from around 1990 all the way up till the recent past. So I'm looking at nine photos of my wife at our daughter's first birthday. To pull them into iPhoto without creating a bunch of folders, events, with today's dates.... Should I put them into folders with descriptive names in the hopes that that will cause iPhoto to assemble them into an event by that same name?
    That is a good idea
drag the folder onto the iPhoto icon in the dock to import all of the photos in it as an event with the folder name
Also you can use file names (name managler - http://www.manytricks.com/namemangler/ -is a good program for renaming files) before importing to iPhoto
And use some kind of metadata editor to assign dates before pulling them into iPhoto? I whacked my entire iPhoto library a few days back over this this and some other sets of photos, because once I got them into the same "event", I used Command+A to select them for a date change. However that did not select all the photos in the event, it selected all the photos in the library. Then the date change put everything out of whack for all the photos - apparently it adds or subtracts to the Julien dates, so instead of making everything that certain date, in this case it adjusted all photos to lose about ten years.
You used adjust them and date - it adds a constant delta to the dates which does not work for scanned photos since they have no "date taken" - you want the batch change time and date to change all selected photos to a specific date and time (with the possibility of adding an increment to the time)

  • Scanned in - Iphoto doesn't read...

I'm new to Iphoto and wanted to make a book for my mother in law's birthday.
So I scanned in a bunch of photos to Iphoto library - they appear and are RGB .jpgs - but they don't show up. Then I tried to import and it said unreadable format so I saved one as a TIF and still not read.
Want to make a photo book but having major frustrations...also, how long does it take for Apple to turn it around once I DO get that far -
    Many thanks-
    Andy

    Andy,
So I scanned in a bunch of photos to Iphoto library...
That's your problem. iPhoto doesn't know they are there, but it won't import them because they are already in the iPhoto Library folder. The solution is to scan to a location outside of the iPhoto Library folder - a Desktop folder is the most convenient. Then import from that folder, and delete it once the photos are in your library.
    Regards.

  • Scanning into iphoto 08 creates single events can I change that?

When scanning photos into iphoto 08 with my epson flatbed my individual scans show up as single events, so if I scan 100 pictures of Dad I have 100 separate events. Is there a way to pre-select creating one event before I begin the scan process? Also is there a way to target the event I want a scan to end up in?

    Six peps
Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
    No and No
But once you scan several you can select all the events you just created and click merge and merge them into one event
Or scan to a folder on the desktop and then import that folder into iPhoto (probably want to turn off the option to split items imported from the finder into events)

  • Have new Canon MG 8120...won't scan to iPhoto

Anyone know how to scan photos from a Canon MG 8120 directly to iPhoto?

As a rule, you can't scan directly to iPhoto. You scan to somehwre else, for instance, a folder on the desktop, then import the images to iPhoto.

  • I do *not* want iMovie to scan my iPhoto library - how?

I have an enormous amount of short video clips in iPhoto, and I don't need iMovie to scan them. The problem is that it always want to scan iPhoto when I start iMovie. I looked in the preferences and there seems to be no way to tell iMovie to NOT scan iPhoto - I accidentally clicked yes, and now it takes forever to start.
I know that if I move the iPhoto library temporarily elsewhere, iMovie will not see it and start up instantaneously, but it is not a good workaround.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Answering part of my question...
If, the last time I used iMovie, the "iPhoto Videos" item is not selected, but something else, like Last Import or any other event in the Event Library, then when iMovie restarts, it will not load the iPhoto Library, and will load very quickly.
    Problem solved.

  • 600 dpi pictures scanned into iPhoto

Does iPhoto accept scanned 600 dpi photos? Some seemed to disappear the next day, leaving a blank "event" square.

The event opens to a grey blank labeled "untitled event."  Any ideas about finding photos that "disappear?" There are 23 of these blank events that show the same date below them when they are closed, which means these were 23 single photos I scanned a few days ago. I appreciate your help.

  • Force a scan & have iphoto suggest faces?

I have pictures that have been imported and OBVIOUSLY contain faces of people already identified.
    A) Can I force iPhoto to rescan a given album or set of photos?
    B) Can i reasonably expect iphoto to then populated a given persons Faces section with suggested photos, which I can then easily confirm or not?
It is a major pain to have to go through un-faced photos and ID each face, when they are clearly of people already in my Faces.
How often does iphoto rescan and suggest?
    DE

Have you upgraded to the latest iPhoto? it does much better.
I don't think it ever re-scans on its own, but you can right(ctl) click on the photo and select the re-scan option.

  • Scan to iphoto?

I scanned photos into a jpg format and directed them to iPhoto.  They appeared as last import, I edited it said saving and they appeared in my photos.  They my iphoto "closed unexpectedly"  (i.e., just shut down) -- and the photos were gone.  Are they gone forever?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto opens?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Scanning into iPhoto 09

I am using a HP PSC 1500 to scan photos into my iMac. If I scan directly into the iPhoto I can not edit or use faces. If I scan into HP Image Zone, I can edit but when I import into iPhoto I still can not use faces. Is there a way I can scan directly into iPhoto and use the edit and search tools.

Get a CanoScan 8800F scanner. It's amazing. It imports after the scan directly into iPhoto.
Are you sure? I see nothing about that in the Cannon information on this scanner - and frankly, while it is not impossible, it is highly unlikely - I have not seen any package that imports photos into directly iPhoto

  • Scanning into iphoto 9

Last year, I scanned multiple photos per scan and each photo ended up in a folder as a single photo- even when I click on "crop". Now, when I scan/crop multiple photos, the whole scanned page is still attached to the photo when I click on "crop".  I don't remembe how did I got the scans to become single photos last time. Any ideas?

O.k. I know that isn't how I did it before because I have a folder called Contact Sheets and it appears I scanned multiple photos and imported it.
I did however recently get Photoshop Elements- though I haven't used it yet. I opened the editor in PSE and clicked on "import" and according to my google search should see my printer. I don't. I see "Anit-aliased PICT...", "Pict Resourced...", and " Frame from video...". The first two let me open my finder in the macbook but the "Epson Scan" is greyed under "Applications" and won't let me open it.  I do see the "divide scanned photos" under "image" in PSE but can't figure out the basics of how to find the scanner! Ugh.
I know I did something easier than this in the past but I'll be darned if I know what that was. I am using a new scanner so perhaps the old scanner software seperated them.

  • IPhoto update from iLife06 won't open HP Scans. Help?

I decided to install iLife06 and had instant problems. I have a 2.5 Dual G5 running 10.3.9. and am using an HP 4890 scanner. Prior to installing the iPhoto update as part of iLIfe06, everything worked fine. I would scan a photo and transfer it to iPhoto and open it and work on it and whatever. Now...scans won't open in iPhoto. No matter how I try to sneak the scan into iPhoto, (via Preview, etc.), it won't open, freezes and has to be force quit. Reinstalled HP software to no avail. All the prior scans done on the same HP 4890, that were already in iPhoto, open fine, but new ones....nada. Had issue with iWeb too, not happy with this iLife06...how do I get rid of it, get back the old iPhoto, and back to serenity? If I use the original disks can I just install the old iPhoto?

    Hi redcatres,
I do not know the answer of why the scans are not opening in iPhoto. Do you scan and save to a folder (not the iPhoto Library folder), then import into iPhoto?
To get back to iPhoto 5, you would really need a backup of the iPhoto 5 Library folder that has not been updated to version 6 in order to keep your metadata such as comments and keywords, and also all your albums, slideshows, books.
You can go back to 5 if you do not have a version 5 backup, but you will have to reimport your photos and lose your metadata.
    Steps:
    To reinstall iPhoto 5
Drag the iPhoto Library folder in the Pictures folder to the desktop and rename it it iPhoto 6 library
Navigate to /Applications and drag iPhoto to the trash
Navigate to /Library/Receipts and drag all iPhoto receipts to the trash
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and drag com.apple.iPhoto.plist to the trash.
Insert your iLife 5 CD/DVD and choose to do a custom install. You will have to keep ongoing through the steps of the install before you get to the screen where you can choose a custom install.
    Install iPhoto.
Run Software Update and update iPhoto to the latest version of 5
Put your backup iPhoto 5 library in the Pictures folder and launch iPhoto.
If you do not have a backup iPhoto 5 library:
Open the iPhoto 6 library folder on the desktop
-double click the iPhoto Library folder on the desktop to open it
-the two main folders you will need to import are the Original folder and the Modified folder (only if you want to import the edited images).
-the Originals folder has all your originals photos unedited. the Modified folder has all images that you have edited, rotated, cropped, etc.
-Drag these two folders to the desktop
-If you want to save the edited image, find it in the roll in the Modified folder and drag it into the roll of the same name in the Originals folder. It will replace the originals and now will be the original.
-If you don't care to save any edited images, then don't import the Modified folder into iPhoto or don't bother replacing the edited image with the original image like I just described.
-If you import the Originals folder into iPhoto you will have all your originals in their named rolls.
-If you import the Originals and Modified folders into iPhoto, you will have all of the being in the originals folder in the finder. The roll with the same name as the other will have a _1 appended to it's name (in the finder)
-the roll from the originals will be next to the same roll from the Modified folder within iPhoto. You can then delete any of the images from there if you want.
I know this might sound confusing but it really isn't.
Get back if any of this sounds like something you might want to do.
