Scanning to preview

Mac OSX 10.6.8 When I scan a typical B&W text document to Preview the PDF file size is enormous as in 8MB compared to the same scan to Word on a PC at 343KB. The large file won't email so I am in a bind. I have the scanners (I have 3) set at the lowest resolution. Any suggestions?

Scanning a multipage document to a single PDF file can be challenging in OS X 10.6.3.
I found two ways to scan a multi-page document to a single PDF file : Preview and Automator.
1. Open Preview, choose File/Import from Scanner and click on the scanner name. Then, you get a menu which depends on your scanner (mine is Brother MFC-8880DN). Then, put the document in the ADF (automatic document feeder) and press the scan button on the computer. You get one PDF file per scanned page in Preview. The files appear in the lateral bar on the right in Preview. You need an additional step to combine all these single PDF files into one single PDF file. You select all the pages in the right lateral bar with command+A. Then, click on File/_Print Selected Pages_ (be careful to avoid "print" which manages only one page) and a menu appears. On the bottom left part, click on the "PDF" button. Then, select "Compress PDF" or another option from the menu depending on your need. After "Compress PDF", you get a menu box where you set a name and a location for your new combined file. You now have a single compressed PDF file which is ready for e-mailing.
2. Use the automator actions. It requires a bit more work. The key action is called "New PDF from images". You can also try "Combine PDF".

  • Scan to preview not working properly

Scanning to Preview recently stopped working properly.  Here are the issues:
When I scan a new document to Preview, it doesn't open in Preview automatically like it once did.  I begin my scan by going to "system preferences" - "print-scan" - "open scanner".
When I click on the details section (where it says "no document loaded" above) it will open the preview window, however, the last scans made show up in the same .pdf document.
For example: I scan 1 page to Preview, then attach that page to an email and send it.  Done.  NEXT I scan a completely separate 2 page document the same way and when I open it up with Preview, the first (1 page scan previously made) document is added to the Preview document making it a 3 page document in error.  Any suggestions to fix this?
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the HP officejet 8500 printer, and restarted my computer and it doesn't resolve it.

The HP software is crap.  If is riddled through with problems and oversights.  But usually you can get things to work with enough perseverence.
    1.  Per dturner608, you can change the mode from "document feeder" to flatbed.  I did this and found that it did work that way, but I also stumbled onto something: it was working on the document feeder as well, I just didn't know it.  When you close out of the scan (after it completes), go to Finder and look for your scan file (which is usually labeled "scan") and I think you will find it there.  So the scanner is scanning, saving, but not giving you any clue that it's doing so.
    2.  There is yet another bug, which is the "one document" checkbox (it's not called exactly that), whose purpose is to make a multi-page scan into one document rather than separate pages.  Once you check that, it treats every scan from that point on like they're all one document.  Yes, incredibly that's true.  On my Mac at least, it doesn't reset itself to "zero" with every new multi-page scan.  It thinks the new scan is a continuation of the last one.  The only way I found is to trick it by doing a multi-page scan (as one document), unchecking the box and running a single page scan through that I don't intend to use, and then re-checking the box for the next multi-page scan.  That seems to tell the software that you are starting a brand new multi-page scan.
    3.  Somewhere in the midst of fiddling through the above, the HP driver decided that Preview should work again.  So all of a sudden it's working - go figure.  [But I couldn't "save as".]  Like I said - their software is crap.  I've had nothing but problems with HP printer driver software.  ....Latest thing is it tells me that faxes did not go through and printing out a "fax failed" status, when in fact they did go through.  I didn't discover that until I called the recipient.  ....Spent a good half hour trying to figure out why it wasn't going through - but it was.   Nice.

  • How to scan with Preview...

    Hey everyone!
I'm wondering how I can scan with Preview... Is it under file>Import Image??? oh, or is my problem because my printer is plugged into my AirPort Extreme?
my printer is a Canon MP160...
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi
You won't be able to use a scanner (or the scanner part of a multifunction printer) that's connected to an Airport base station. You'll have to connect it directly to your Mac with USB to scan.
Normally, when you install a scanner, it comes with scanning software, which you would use to initiate the scan; alternatively, there may be a "scan button" on the unit itself, which will launch the software and perform the scan. Make sure you check for updated software on the Canon site (check especially for 10.5 compatibility), as bundled CDs often contain outdated drivers.

  • Scan via Preview no longer working after Lion Upgrade

After upgrading to Lion, I can no longer use Preview to scan a document from my Kodak ESP9.  I have a range of issues, but the most common is that after telling preview to look for networked scanners, and then selecting the Kodak, it open a box that should automatically start a preview scan.  Instead, the box shows the SCAN and OVERVIEW button but nothing else, the screen is jsut blank.
I have updated Kodak's sofware and firmware to Lion versions.
Anyone have an idea how to get this working again?  It was flawless before the Lion upgrade.
    Thanks.

  • Scanning in preview to multiple files no longer possible?!

I am using an HP OfficeJet Printer to scan from the document feeder wirelessly to preview.app. It used to function flawlessy but now I ran into a problem that caused me to almost through my AirBook across the room.
Using the import from scanner option in preview under lion I choose "Document Feeder" and the scanner starts to pull in the pages. preview.app - as it used to do then - opens a new window with the frist page and keeps adding new ones as they are transmitted from the scanner. so far so normal. what happens then is very annoying: every time a new page arrives - the one before that gets overridden with the the one. preview app scans page after page only to override the newly acquired scan.
I always end up with something that looks quite funny: X amount of pages in the sidebar of my preview window containing a thumbnail of the same LAST page that was scanned...
Does anyony have an idea hwo to solve this problem?
Another thing just springs to my mind. It used to be that preview app would let you name the to be scanned image (or it would use the default "scanned image") and during the scanning process it would just name the pages / documents "scanned image", "scanned image 01"...
Now - probably because of the new versioning feature of lion - which I find very very confusing - all scans appear under the same name... That is probably the reason for the overwrite behaviour.
Thank you very much for your time everybody – I appreciate feedback.
Using 10.7.1 and also installed printer drivers HP update that came around yesterday or the day before that.

You probably have the camera raw dialog set to output 16 bits/channel.
Open a camera raw file and at the bottom of the camera raw dialog where it says Bit Depth choose 8 bits/channel and click done.
Then try the using process multiple files.

  • How do I Apply a Quartz Filter Automatically to PDF Scan Using Preview

    Hi,
Question: is there a 1-step process to scan to PDF and create reasonable file sizes.
I've found discussions on this, but no conclusive answer that someone has actually tested and used.
    PROBLEM: Scanned PDFs are large
SOLUTION: use a quartz filter to reduce size.
The problem with this approach is that its a two step process
    1. scan the file using preview (Import from scanner)
    2. "Save As" with a filter applied to reduce size.
What I'm looking for is someone that's got this down to a 1-step process using only built-in tools of 10.6.
    Thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to reply - but not entirely true.
My use case for smaller files is sending them via email. You are correct that size on the local file system should not be (and is not) an issue.
Let me clarify why this is a 2-step process (for me) at the moment.
When you use preview (I've been unsuccessful with Image Capture and don't know it would make a difference) and hit scan, the document IS saved. You can then immediately quit preview and your document is still at the save location you specify. Hence this would be a 1-step process.
The additional step I need to do is "Save As" so I can invoke the quartz filter I created that reduces the PDF by about 80% in size with no visible loss of integrity.
I would like this filter to get automatically applied when the document is first scanned - something I'm starting to think is not possible.
I've gotten partial results by adjusting DPI and other factors of the initial scan, but not the reduction in size I can get by applying the filter.

  • Is it possible to scan without preview/ image capture??

These programs are useless for scanning. Every time I try to scan something it automatically guesses where the image is cropped. It gets it wrong almost every time and there is no way of turning it off.
I tried clicking the more details button but my scanner sends an error message whenever I do. Therefore both Preview and Image Capture are stuck in basic mode. I also tried finding Epson Print/ Scan software and new driver updates by Apple, but no joy there I'm afraid.
I have an Epson DX4400, it works fine - but only with Preview and Image Capture. It won't work with any other programs I know of (such as Photoshop etc). As far as I'm aware there's no TWAIN driver available, so how is it possible to scan without doing it through Preview?
    This *****!

Hi DLThomas & welcome to discussions...
Have you taken a look at VueScan...best out there that I know of - seems to do everything scanning related well - tons of options without the compatibility grief.

Grab the demo and see for yourself if it meets your workflow, etc.
    Good luck in any case.

  • Scanning with Preview - "cannot write to folder" error

I was scanning some photos yesterday using my epson 3170 scanner into Preview.
    These scanned & saved OK.
then I installed a couple of Apple updates - one was the latest OS X security update and a java update.
I then scanned something else and now I get a "cannot write to folder" error message preventing me from saving the scanned image (to the same folder I was saving the others to earlier).  I can save files to the same folder using other apps so there is nothing wrong with the drive or folder permissions.
I scanned the image otthe desktop and moved the file to the folder I wanted.
If I use ImageCapture it works OK as well.
Any ideas why Preview won't let me save the images?

Check the protections.  A command such as ls -ale@ or ls -aled@ would be typical for checking that.   I'd guess the files aren't writeable by the web server.  This'll probably be a chown and possibly a chmod command to bring the settings on the errant log(s) into agreement with the other settings on the other Apache web server logs that are being written.
FWIW, I'd use zdump or cat and pipe the log contents elsewhere if I wanted to write to them.  But if you're resetting the logs, there's a rollover script around (the one that runs automatically on OS X, and I'm unfortunately drawing a blank on the name; it moved from the /etc/periodic stuff over to launchd a while back), or write your own short script that rolls the files and leaves the appropriate owner and permissions settings.

  • Scanning in "Preview" not working.

When trying to scan I get message "Preview quit unexpectedly." I ran Disk Utility and got this: "Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired." What to do? Scanning was working great. Thank you for helping if you can. I have tested the scanner and it is working. (Canon MG6120 Printer/Scanner)

I did get into the Console but was not able to get it to display data from before today. So I just repeated the attempt to use my scanner via Preview and copied some of the data feedback it provided. Does this help?

  • Can no longer scan using preview

I have Brother DCP-9040CN color laser Printer and I am using the latest version of Mountain Lion. I have been scanning documents with no problems. The last time I tried to scan a document, I get the message the selected folder in not writable. I have not changed any setting.Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

Try to option click on your printer (if there is no printer updates) and click reset. this is found in the system preferences.

  • Scanning multiple pages with preview and brother MFC-7440n

    Hi,
because of some problems with my old scanner after i installed snow leopard, i bought a new compatible one. It's a brother MFC-7440n with apple build-in drivers.
When i start scanning to preview with more than one page, there will be a pdf document for every page. It doesn't matter if i choose "create just one document".
First i wondered because in leopard preview multiple pages are displayed like in snow leopard. But this is wrong. There is one pdf file for every page.
How can i change that issue? When i scan more than one page, i wan't one pdf document with multiple pages, not a pdf per page.
    Thanks a lot.
    Dominik

    Hi Dominik,
What about Brother's scanner software? Do they have a scan program you can use to create multiple page documents? I have a Canon, and its software did that. The only other way is how I explained in my previous post. I have no issue using Preview for the simple document scanning I do. But if you have more needs, perhaps the Brother scan program should be installed.
Brother has issued a scanner driver update on 9/10....

  • Scan default settings in preview

Nearly every time, I scan with preview with the same settings. But I don't find a possibility to save my settings as default.
Is there no way in no program of the Mac OS (preview, digital images, system settings of printers/scanners)?
    Thanks for help, Bertold

Preview is a limited scanning tool and so does not offer the features you are looking for.  I personally, like many others in these Forums, have moved over to using "Vuescan" as a scanning App to increase my scanning flexibility and Productivity.  I happen to really like it.  You can look at it here:

  • HP Photosmart Premium won't scan to Mac

Since downloading Yosemite on my Mac I can't scan photos from the touch screen on my HP Photosmart Premium C310. I also am unable to scan from Preview or from Image Capture. If I try to scan by touching the scan icon on the printer, I get the following error message: "Scan problem: Try starting scan from computer. Refer to documentation for details."
I don't need any new updates for the printer or Mac (I checked). I have a solid network connection as well. I noticed that my Mac is no longer under Networked Computers on the printer but am not sure if that is related to the scanning problem?
I have also reinstalled HP Software.
    I am able to scan from System Preferences-->Printers & Scanners-->Scan-->Open Scan-->

    Hi,
The solution provided for 10.10 is available via Apple Software Update, using any incompatible HP software which was not designed for your operating system may prevent the correct update from being installed and.
Scanning from the front panel is not supported with the provided solution but only from teh software on yoru Mac:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Photosmart-Premium-e-All-in-One-Printer---C310a/4023238/model...
I suggest removing any incomatible HP software by going toapplications > Hewlett-Packard and following the HP Uninstaller.
Once the unisntall completes go to System Preferences > Printers and Scanners and click the plus sign.
Select your printer and select teh printer model instead the default AirPrint option within the Use drop Down menu, then you should be able to scan via Image Capture, Preview or from Printers & Scanners.

  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw Scanning

I bought and jsut setup an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw.
We are a Mac household, and we connect via wireless to the printer, which works great.
My issue is scanning.  On the little screen on the printer, I can copy, print and even fax.  No option for scanning.  There is some bullsh*t app that I've had to download via HP called Readiris, which is useless.  There is no apparent way to initiate a scan via this app.
So I've bought a multifunction printer that doesn't scan.  Any help?

    It doesn't scan?!
Below is the text from the first page of the first link one clicks on about this printer.  How _on earth_ is one supposed to deduce pre-purchase that it doesn't scan from the main menu?  Argh.  As an HP employee myself, this is aggravating in the extreme.
Ok, venting aside, this link <http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03967506#N229> is not offering a solution.
I am running OSX 10.9.1. I am unable to find the Full Driver to donwload in order to connect to this printer in a manner that would enable any of the 3 methods of scanning (Via Preview, Image Capture, etc.) to work.  Can you please provide a link to the Full Driver for this MFP M177fw for Mac OSX 10.9?  Thanks.
