Scared to Update to 4.0/4.1

I have a 3G with an outdated OS. The problem is that both my sister and a friend of mine updated their OS to 4.0 awhile back but both of them LOST the data associated with their apps. I've reached this as much as I can but can't find a solution anywhere. I've read that the "backup" that itunes does when you sync will not back up the data associated with my apps and in my case it will not even back up my contacts because I don't allow itunes to sync my contacts (just my calendar). I have thousands of contacts on my computer and I do NOT want those people on my phone too. I cannot afford to lose my data associated with my apps or my contacts just for an OS update.
Can anyone help me with this?

App data is stored in only two places, on your phone & in the iPhone backup. Likewise, contacts on your phone are included in the iPhone backup. This support document details what exactly is included in the iPhone backup:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
The first thing done when you sync or update software is in fact an iPhone backup. Not syncing the contacts on your phone with a supported application on your computer is not a wise idea. Should something happen to your phone or your phone"s backup, you risk losing them all. The iPhone is not designed to be a storage device.
Since you have not updated your phone yet, you might as well wait until iOS 4.2 is released later this month. Update iTunes first before you attempt to update your phone.
Settings>General>About>Version...will tell you the current OS on your phone.

  • Anyone else scared to update there device?

ive been scared to update my device to the new os because I dont want to brick my phone

Hi there, I was concerned at first as I hopped onto this forum and saw all the problems people had with the update. But I read alot of the threads which mentioned having a reliable Internet connection so the download won't be interrupted or download corrupt, if u are using a computer that has anti-virus and firewall u may have to turn them off before downloading as it may block the update. Some users have suggested that u must be using the iPhone USB cable as a generic one can corrupt the phone updating and also make sure the USB is plugged into the computer itself and not a USB hub. Make sure u back up your phone before you update.
I had no issues updating. Took 15 mins to download and less than 10mins to install. After updating to 4.0.2 I have even seem my battery life perform marginally better and couldn't be happier.
I hope these ideas help u in deciding. If ur near an apple store I know that they are happy to update your phone for you. Well here in Australia they do 

  • Scared to update to Yosemite, If it doesn't work can you get everything back?

I am currently on 10.6.8. I wanted to update to Yosemite but I am scared to because I do not want to lose all of my files. Is there anyway if it doesn't work and freezes that I can get all of my files back and 10.6.8 back? And if you can get them back, How? I am not that good with technology and I don't want to mess the computer up. Thanks for all of the help, Carl.

You will need to do a good backup (I'd suggest getting the trial of carbon copy cloner, and cloning, not copying, your entire system to an external drive.)  If you simply upgrade over the top of your current system, you are likely to find a mass of incompatible apps, which will need upgrading.
I'd suggest the best thing to do is the following
    a) do the backup (do it anyway, you dont want to lose your files for any reason, never mind upgrading the OS)
    b) check that your hardware is compatible with Yosemite (http://osxdaily.com/2014/06/03/os-x-yosemite-system-requirements-compatible-macs -list/ will tell you)
    c) IF its compatible and after you have made a clone or copy of your current system (even Time Machine would be a better option than nothing at all) you should do a CLEAN install of Yosemite.
    d) If the install goes OK and everything looks like its working the way it should, you could migrate your files and info from your clone or time machine.
    And cross your fingers.

  • My iPhone 3gs was locked to virgin but it was unlocked before i bought it and i now use a t-mobile sim card. If I update my phone to ios 5.1 will it lock my phone so I can no longer use it? I'm scared to update!! Please help

I updated my sisters phone yesterday to ios 5.1 but after I did this it wouldn't recognise her sim card and the phone isn't unlocked or jailbroken. My phone is unlocked but not jailbroken and I have done all the updates before without a problem. Does this mean that if I update to ios 5.1 it wont lock my phone and will continue to work as normal?

That depends on where it came from and how it was "unlocked". Virgin is a supported carrier in France and in Canada.
If you are in France, then it could have been legitimately unlocked. Virgin France offers unlocking.
If you are in Canada, then it was definitely hacked to unlock it as they do not offer unlocking there. If it is a Canadian phone, you can't be supported here at all. Discussing hacked and jailbroken phones is forbidden by the terms of service.

  • Scared to Update lol

If i update my 4th generations iPod touch to iOS 6 will it delete my pics and music?

Back up All of the content you want to keep by syncing your iPod to your computer (iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer & iOS: Syncing with iTunes)
that way if any thing does go wrong with the update, you will be able to restore the backup.

  • MSI GE70 - Scared to update Win 7 x64

Hi everyone. Please forgive my grammatic errors, English isn't my native language.
So couple of days ago (19th) my Windows 7 stopped working properly. Network icon had blue circle on it and didn't let me open Network & Sharing Center. Skype, Photoshop etc. programs didn't start up (but Firefox did!). Soon after that S-Bar & Explorer.exe crashed. I used Task Manager to start explorer.exe again but after that I couldn't open Control Panel, msconfiq, windows updates, device manager etc. Instead I got error message saying that there isn't enough memory. I tried to close laptop but it got stuck in "Shutting Down" window for 30~ minutes so I forced it to shutdown by pushing power button. Same thing happened after reboot and googling didn't help.
I did system restore in Safe Mode and it seemed to start working again for a while. Same thing happened yesterday and the day before. I don't know much about laptops/pcs so I don't know where to start problem solving. My friend told me to turn off Windows updates because it seems like the problems started after some critical updates. Problem continued happening still and I decided to re-install Windows 7 again. After installation I updated Windows from Windows Update tool and same problem appeared again!
I tried to to run system restore again but something went wrong and I got bsod instead. Windows 7 stopped working and I had to install it again... So here I'm. I created restore point asap after installation was done and udated only graphic card for desktop (Intel HD 4000 Graphics). Could it be some nasty virus or hardware failure? I don't know what to do. :(
    Thanks in advance!

Have you done a check disk recently on the HDD?
Have you done a memtest86 on the memory?  >>Memtest86<<
Either of those could possibly cause those issues.

  • Hey i am an iphone 3gs user and i am scared to update to ios 5..... can anyone plz tell me if it is safe to update....

should i upgrade to ios5 on my 3gs????
    is it safe to upgrade...?????
i am really confused as i only have one apple product...

Virtually no-one has upgraded to 1os5.  They're all frozen in terror!
    But seriously...what do you reckon?
As long as you haven't hacked your phone it will be fine.  If you have hacked it, no-one can tell whether it is safe or not. It'll be completely at your own risk.

  • I got my iphone4 updated via wifi and its shows downloaded and when i install it, it shows verifying software and then says error occured while installing ???

hi, there, i got my iphone4 updated via wifi n its downloaded, its shows when i check the software update n when i install it, it shows verifying the software n after a couple of seconds comes back with "error while installing ios6" failed so many attempts and even tried to reset the phone, but no use, then i tried latest updated itunes too, can u believe it, it took ages to download n when it was 880mb of the 899mb file, error occured , so many failed attempts, can some one tell me what to do ? are there any issues with iphone4 updates? m scared to update it now, but really wanna get it on my phone.

I have experienced a similar error with the iPhone 4S.  The new version of iTunes will not let me restore the phone, it must be updated and nothing appears to be happening.  Suffice it to say I am not amused.  Apple needs to work this out - I had trouble updating to 8.0.2 as well.

  • Updating my iPod touch 4th gen to iOS5 - I'm having trouble with syncing in general.

I first synced my iPod touch to my old computer on iTunes, and then I got my laptop and I downloaded iTunes, plugged in my iPod, and use it to download music. But the old computer broke, and we got a new one, with a different hardrive and everything. I didn't mind, because I was content with just using iTunes on my laptop for searching for and downloading music. The iOS 5 update came out, and at first I wasn't bothered, but now it seems to be hindering the performance of iTunes in general, as I can't download music off my computer - it keeps coming up with Error 13019.
I looked on tons of support forums, and they all mentioned syncing music and apps. I didn't think that would be a problem, but whenever I tick the box saying 'sync music', the memory bar goes RIGHT DOWN, as if it's deleting all the songs I got off CDs, which I don't want, and whenever I tick the box saying 'sync apps', it comes up with all the apps I had a few months ago, missing out all of the apps I have now, which would no doubt delete my progress on them.
I've even tried just clicking 'sync' on the main device page, but it just comes up with Error 13019.
And every time I right click on my iPod's name to click 'back up' as many of the forums said, iTunes freezes and nothing happens for about 10 minutes, and I end up having to force close it on the task manager. This has happened 4 times already. -_- I've even updated iTunes to the most recent version, but nothing's changed.
I'm scared to update my iPod, because of course it says it will delete everything, and there's no way I can back things up or sync them without them getting deleted.
Any suggestions on what the heck I should do? By the way, I'm an amateur in the technology world, so please don't use too many fancy words. =)

Try here first to get rid of the error:
    iTunes: Error 13019 during sync
Then you should be ablt to make the backup. Just not that the backup that iTunes makes does not insluced synced media like apps and music.
    iTunes: About iOS backups
    - You can transfer iTunes purchases to the new computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - For other music you will need a third-party program like one of those discussed here. Google for more.
    Copy music

  • Should i update my iphone 4s ios 7.1.2 to 8.1

im using iphone 4s, ios 7.1.2
after reading all the reviews of ios 8, im scared to update to ios 8.1
to be honest right now i wont able to effort a 5s.
so if i update it , n it lags like iphone 4 when it was updated to ios 7, then i dont wann update... because i dont like using a laggy phone.
so guys please help me out...

    I will share my experience,
I'm loving the change to 8.1 from 6.3.1, it is much faster and cleaner in look. Now for a fuller disclosure:
this is the first iPhone (a 4s) and I've only had it for a week before I updated to 8.1, aaanndd, it was just reset as new so it was as clean as could be for it's age. I have no issues to report, wait, I did have it "hang" when I updated. It went thru the download and started the install and then the bar stopped for several hours near the end and I though I just created a brick, and no it turns out I didn't. While reading all these posts I read about just (again this was after an unusually long time) shutting everything off, waiting for a short period (few minutes for me) rebooting. The phone said that it was updated and wanted to go thru the process to complete and activate as normal. Most all of my info was there.
    That's my 2¢ worth...

  • Updater 2005-10-12: Downloaded but not running

Guys & Girls, bear with me on this...
I have been stuck with this issue for a few weeks now and originally had raised this issue on the ITunes forum and despite 30 or so postings nobody solved this problem.
Basically I can download the updater for the Mini (Windows XP) from the website, fine no problem. I then follow the correct instructions by opening the application from my Start Menu. However, when I select the updater nothing happens. No prompt box appears, nothing.
I have been on a friends PC who downloaded the application for me. It ran perfectly and i connected my Ipod when requested and the software appeared to load. When I got back to my PC the Ipod updated. Nevertheless a couple of days later when I docked my Ipod Mini to ITunes it failed to recognise it again...
I have just tried transferring my friends downloaded updater folder to my PC, but exactly the same thing happens. It would appear that for some reason my PC is not allowing the Updater to run.
    Most grateful for any ideas???

Here's where my procastination is a good thing... I was about to upgrade to the latest firmware last week when I stumbled upon green-orange problems here in the forum... And some guy can't play M4As... Now I'm scared of updating to destroy... so I turned off all auto-updates... better to stick to what used to work, no matter how old...
Meanwhile, try restoring from an earlier update... like last month's... or your iPod CD...
I'm waiting for things to clear up before even attempting to update...

  • Update Leopard

    Hi all,
Im actually a bit new with OSX so maybe there is a easy answer to this but i rather be careful then that my system crashes. I got a Macbook this christmas with the following specs:
    Macbook model 1,1
    intel core duo 1.83 Ghz.
    2GB RAM
    Systemversion: Mac OS X 10.5.1 (9B21)
    Kernel-version: Darwin 9.1.0
Now i changed the program updates to manual since i had a problem
with these updates. I wanted to update my system and i downloaded a update of 1GB together with the latest itunes. after that i had to reboot but when i did i got a kernel panic, mismatch between kernel and CPU so had to reinstall whole OSX. I dont have a disk so had to let someone else do it. After this im a bit scared to update.Because of the kernel panic error i could not boot anymore and only got a message to hold the power button and restart.
I think the following happend... I installed a update (probably 10.6 not sure) i didnt see what kind of update it was (a bit dumb but ok) but since the system itself said that there was a update available i just installed it. That's where it went wrong. I think my hardware could not take this latest update and thats why i would not boot. Now i have 10.5.1 and if i search for updates i can update to 10.5.8 but should i? dont i get this kernel panic again? is my macBook to old?
Since i dont have a dvd or anything and dont want to go through all this trouble again with reinstalling etc. i really have to be sure that its safe to update.I checked the apple support page and searched on my serienumber and it gave me a total specs list of my machine. http://support.apple.com/kb/SP31
Hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance,

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
First, if you're not backing up your MacBook, I'd buy an external drive and use Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/) or SuperDuper! (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/) to back it up. Then if you have a bad experience with an update, you can easily restore your Mac from the backup.
I'd also download the OS X 10.5.8 "combo" updater
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
yourself instead of using Software Update.
That update you tried to install would definitely not have been OS X 10.6, which has to be purchased.

  • Can I still update to Lion and wait on Mountain Lion?

I am still on OSX 10.6.8 with my first gen Mac Pro running 2 dual-core 2.66Ghz Intel processors with 16GB RAM.
This is my audio production work-horse running Logic and several 3rd party plug-ins. Over the years, I have learned the hard way to wait on upgrades to maintain compatibility across the board and allow all developers to catch up with the shiny new OS X. For this reason I have waited on upgrading from Snow Leopard.
I like the way my machine runs on Snow Leopard and almost wish I could stay here. However, I am also an iPhone usera and a long-time user of .mac/MobileMe. Now for me to continue those features I paid for for nearly 10 years, I must move to iCloud. Which requires OS X 10.7 and up.
So part of me wants to update to 10.7 now that I know all of my 3rd party plug-ins are ready. However I am scared to update because I feel the more I update my OS X, the older I will make my computer. I am worried that I will see worse performance on newer OS X.
Anyhow, is there a way to simply update now to 10.7 and still wait on updating to 10.8? I only see 10.8 in the App Store.
Does anyone have any insight to my thoughts here and have any experience to add? Am I worrying to much and should my 2006 Mac Pro be fine with Mountain Lion?
    Thanks!

If you want to upgrade at all, I think you would be better off going straight to Mountain Lion. It is likely that it will perform better than Lion anyway.
Not knowing what third party utilities you are using makes it difficult to predict, but just assume you will run into some compatibility challenges. If there are any, they will be identical for both Lion and ML.
In any event, you should definitely consider cloning your existing system to another partition so that you have the option to revert to it. Both Lion and ML are big leaps from Snow Leopard. Having a reversion plan will ease the transition, even if you never avail yourself of the option.

  • Should I update my iPod to iOS 8?

The day I updated my iPad 2 to iOS 8, it started working very slow. So, I'm scared to update my iPod touch 5th generation 32 GB because I don't want it's speed to decrease. How do iOS 8 performs with iPod touch. Is it slow or fast?

Hey Tom and Jerry, Not that matters, the decision is yours, but I have not updated. Many have reported slow or laggy response, apps closing, missing music, apps, photos etc. very poor battery life, as little as 1 to 2 hours on a full charge (Note; they did not say what they were doing). iPods turning off unexpectedly, and various charging issues. Many of the new features will only work with iPhone, require hardware the iPod simply does not have. Some have stated people working at Apple stores have told them that iOS 8 should not have been made for the iPod 5! With this said, many others have not report anything, either because there iPods work OK, or they don't know where to go to report a problem and are willing to live with it. And remember, once you move to the new iOS, you cannot go back. Personally, I'm resisting the move to iOS 8 for as long as I can. Hope this helps. Cheers.
