Scared to use my shuffle

At this point I'm so disappointed in apple. I just updated to iTunes 6 and wanted to check out the new ipod prefs, etc.
But then I thought, am I going to lose my audiobook bookmarks? am I going to lose my podcasts? what's going to get put on my shuffle? what order are they going to be put on? have I listened to everything?
in short... I'm scared to plug my shuffle into my computer because I don't know what's going to happen!
I've loved apple since 1985, in short, because of the simple, predictable behavior of their products. But now, with my shuffle, I'm totally unsure what's going to happen when I plug it in.
When are the unresolved Shuffle issues going to be fixed?
1 - lost bookmarks
2 - random order of podcasts
3 - intermittent "disk cannot be read from or written to" errors.
these are the important one to me, but I know there are others.
Saddened and disappointed.
Derek

Well, when I bought the other, older Ipods I had, they wiped Itunes clean of all of its music the first time you synchronize. I guess the computer would default to the new Ipod and since its hard drive was blank, it just blanked out all my Itunes content.

    You're welcome.
Going back to your original post:
    5) Tried running Itunes in 'safe mode', running itunes as an administrator..nothing.
Was that iTunes' safe mode as opposed to Windows' safe mode? iTunes safe mode is invoked by holding down CTRL+SHIFT immediately after clicking the icon to launch iTunes and continuing to hold until this message pops up:
Click continue, then close iTunes and reopen. With luck iTunes now opens normally every time.

  • ITunes has stopped Working when using Ipod shuffle 3gen on Windows Vista HB

Itunes keeps shutting down when I insert my Ipod shuffle into the usb connection of my latop. I am using a Windows Vista Home Basic for an OS.
Not sure if this is a Vista, Apple issue, or something else...
I have contacted apple about this and uninstaled/reinstalled Itunes. Yet after all this, I get the same error message. The message reads:
"iTunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
As far as I know Vista should be compatible with iTunes and it is until I actually try to use my shuffle (newest model). Its weird because my shuffle works fine on a second computer that has Windows XP for an OS...
Does anyone have a solution to this??
    Thanks in advance!

i have the same issue... but i found a workaround.. i tried 3 diff OS's . didnt change the problem. To Add apps or music to ur Ipod... simply DISCONNECT the Ipod from the PC then add files/folders to library. Then connect the ipod back to PC and sync. it has no problem adding the files that way (at least in my case) I hope this helps... Good Luck =)

I was hoping it would be something like a USB device conflict, but now the shuffle is the only thing connected...

Under Part 9. Verify that USB drivers are installed, did you try the steps in If only "Unknown Device" appears?  That appears to be your situation.
Also, you said that the shuffle initially worked well enough to do a sync, then it had the same problem again.  If you can get it to work again initially, before doing anything else, try the following.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  By default, the checkbox for Enable disk use should be unchecked.  If so, check it and Apply the change.  See if that makes any difference.
(If Enable disk use was already checked, try unchecking it and Apply the change.  Basically, set it the "other way" and see if there is any improvement.)
NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it physically.
If the disk use change makes a difference, that may provide a clue about the actual cause.

  • How can i set songs within a playlist, or an entire playlist, so that they are not included when using the shuffle function on IPOD Classic? Is this possible?

How can i set songs within a playlist, or an entire playlist, so that they are not included when using the shuffle function on IPOD Classic?
    Is this possible?

You can set any song to Skip when shuffling.
In your iTunes Library, highlight the song and right-click/Get Info. On the Options tab is the Skip when shuffling box. Select that and then Sync the iPod with your Library.

  • My computer doesn't recognize my "used" ipod shuffle

How do I get my computer to recognize my "used" ipod shuffle?

See how easy it was to state those important facts.  My mind-reading superpower is not working this week...
I know how to connect to the UBS port correctly
I wasn't talking about the USB port end of the cable.  I was talking about the plug that connects to the headphones jack on the shuffle.  That connection can initially be tighter than expected for some people, so make sure it is fully inserted into the headphones jack.  You should feel it click into place.
I have one short cable and a cable with a port to dock the shuffle. (it lights up)
If that second one is a third-party cable, make sure it is described as being for the 3rd and 4th gen shuffle.  A cable that is for the older 2nd gen shuffle does not work, because the connector plug is different.  So, it's possible that you have only one cable that is designed to work withe the 4th gen shuffle?
Both my shuffles are brand new from Amazon. (I returned one as I thought it was bad)
IF you returned one of the shuffles, you only have one on-hand to trouble-shoot with at the moment?  "3 bad iPods"?  What model is the third iPod?  It doesn't connect to your computer and iTunes either?  Or maybe you are saying you had three shuffles total and returned one, so now you have two?  Confusing...
It seems unlikely that you'd get three (or even two) shuffles that do not connect consecutively.  So it still seems to me like it's related to software on the computer, IF it's not one of the things mentioned above.  This document has advice on things to try, when both the computer (Windows) and iTunes do not recognize the shuffle as being connected
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
Some of the points you have already tried, and some do not apply to the shuffle.

  • Playlist shuffle is working even when the button is off...Im using Ipod shuffle 4th gen*

Im using Ipod shuffle 4th gen...And I am not able to stop the songs getting shuffled....For example I want my ipod the play the songs one by one...but its not working...Its shuffling songs by default...I mean the button which stops shuffling the songs(the on off button when placed in the iddle stops shuffling songs) is NOT working....What to do?

If you are trying to play a playlist in the order shown for that playlist (in iTunes), you need to be IN the playlist on the shuffle.  You may be in the main "all songs" list on the shuffle, and not a particular playlist.  Note: You can have multiple playlists on 4th (and 3rd) gen shuffle, which is why there is a separate "all songs" list.

  • Using 2G shuffle with speakers while simultaneously charging

I currently listen to my 40GB iPod photo at work through logitech mm50 speakers for 8-10 hours a day. I bought a 2G shuffle to use at work instead, because I've already dropped the big iPod from 30 feet up (I'm a carpenter...was working on a church bell tower...) and decided that my 400 dollar iPod was not worth risking at work any more.
I'm looking for a solution to using the shuffle with my speakers that will also charge the shuffle while in use. I know can plug the shuffle into the mm50 using the headphone jack to the line-in jack on the speakers, but then the shuffle is always running off the internal battery. That'll burn up the battery faster that I would like to.
I make of practice of using it plugged in with the big iPod, and once a week or so running off of batteries to keep the batteries excercised, and would like to do the same with the shuffle. I can see no way to do that. Does anyone know of any kind of adaptor that'll turn the usb cord from the shuffle dock into a full-blown dock connector? I saw that Altec Lansing had a cradle type of thing for using the 1G shuffle in their docking speaker sets. Ideally something like that for the 2G would be great.

Sorry, but no one has come forward with a docking adaptor that breaks out audio for the 2nd Gen Shuffle...
This used to work fine for the 1stGen Shuffle:

  • Can I use the Shuffle over USB in a car?

    Hi all,
Have a brand new iPod Shuffle 4th gen that I want to setup for use in a car.  Have a Nano in one car, using a USB connection...that works great.  I'm trying to do the same with a Shuffle in a different car, but with no luck.  The stereo doesn't acknowledge it's even connected.  That said, I tried connecting it with USB in my car that works with my Nano, and it also didn't work there.
Can the Shuffle only be connected through AUX?  If I do that, I assume it has to be controlled with the Shuffle as well, and can't be controlled through the stereo (showing the music on screen)?
(I realize some of this may be car specific, but in general, trying to find out if USB playback is just not possible).
    Thanks!
    -Mike

When you connect ANY iPod to a car audio system using a USB connection, the iPod is acting as a storage device.  The iPod is not doing anything else.  It is not being controlled to play music.  The car audio system is only accessing the iPod's "disk," like it would access a USB flash drive that has song files on it, and the car audio system is then playing the music.
The most likely reason it does not work with the shuffle is because the shuffle does not have a dock connector (or Lightning connector) like other iPods.  It uses the headphones jack, so there may be some missing functionality or connection points.  You should check the documentation for the car audio system to see what devices are supported.
If you connect the shuffle with the appropriate cable to an auxiliary audio input on the car stereo, you are using the shuffle to play through the car speakers, like with any device you connect that way.
As an alternative, you should consider getting a cheap USB flash drive, like this one that is so small that it barely sticks out of the USB port
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SanDisk/SDCZ33008G/
Put your favorite songs on it, and leave it connected in the car (except when you want to change songs).  It has 4x the storage capacity of a shuffle for about $10, and there's no dangling cable.  You'll save your iPod from the wear and tear of constantly connecting and disconnecting it, plus a USB flash drive is much less susceptible to damage from extreme hot and cold compared to an iPod (especially one that has an LCD screen).

  • Can you use the shuffle feature within a created playlist from itunes?

Basically I would like to listen to a playlist on my ipod using the shuffle feature. I don't wish to hear the playlist in the same order everytime. Can this be done? If so, how?

Yes. Go to SETTINGS > SHUFFLE, and set it to SONGS. Then, go back, highlight the name of your playlist and press PLAY. It will play just that playlist, and it will be shuffled.
    CHeers!

  • Using iPod Shuffle with TWO computers

I have two laptops (one Powerbook and one iBook) and would like to use my iPod Shuffle with both computers, downloading music from the iTunes of each computer. Is that possible or will it always make me choose which iTunes I am linked to and delete all the music from the other one?

You can set your iPod shuffle up to mount as a disk on the desktop, and copy data files that can be transported from one computer to another. You aren't going to be able to use the shuffle to sync music from one iTunes account and another, however. It was only designed to work with one computer/one iTunes at a time.

  • Can I use my Shuffle to ...

Can I use my Shuffle to transfer music files from a Windows PC to a Mac. The reason is I want to get rid of my PC, the PC does not have iTunes and the files are kept in the My Music folder. Can this be done? I have read that I can and I have read that I can't. Has anyone here done this?
Thanks to all who take the time to reply.

You can put your Shuffle into Disk Mode; do that in Preferences when connected to your Mac.
Now you just need to plug the Shuffle into the PC and get it to mount up as a drive. See your User's Manual on how to make that happen; if you need to install iTunes onto the PC, it's on the disc which came with the iPod.
