Scarry results in Memtest86 on my iMac

Hi guys
Im having some suspisions but maybe im just parranoid.
I was in the apple genius bar yesterday and after 15-20 check up they said everything seems to be ok. They didnt run deep diagnostic test and strongly suggested i dont need one. Today i did memtest86 v5.0.0 and got like 6k+ errors after 38min of testing.
Can you tell what the problem is - RAM, CPU, or something else or its normal and I should not be concerned?
BTW i done hardware test and got error message  "4 mem / 9 / 4000......"  which indicates to problem ram but again apple guys said this test is not very reliable and i shouldnt worry.
p.s. i have late 2012 imac where i have no access to RAM.
Also i have run Geekbench3 (only32-bit free version) with same results as other iMacs in my category.
Thnx for help!

If you have Apple care I would contact support direct and give them the details of the AHT, if they don't think it is a problem then give them the results of the Memtest86 error.
Memory errors may not initially show any problems in using the system but they can cause data corruption that only comes to light when you access the data sometime in the future.
If you are have intermittent problems with your computer, then obviously you need to tell Apple Care that information as well.
It is a long time since I used Memtest86 but I found its results reliable.
Good luck.

Unable to open firefox - get message that " a copy is already open and only one copy can be open at a time. I have dragged the app to the waste basket and downloaded another firefox app. However same result". I have a IMAC , V.10.6.3.
I get above message when I click on the firefox icon.

This worked, I used the method described in this link http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=365156, and opened the Mozilla profile screen with the terminal on my mac, using the language given in the links. Then I duplicated my original profile to save the bookmarks, etc. Put them in a folder listed Duplicate profile with the date. With the open profile screen, I deleted my original profile, created new profile folder and then a new profile. Note that profile cannot be created in the system library, it must be created on the disc, because the library will not allow writing into it. After I created my new profile folder, I dragged all my old information into it, and it worked. Firefox closed and the error disappeared. You must be VERY careful to make sure Firefox is closed anytime you are doing anything with the profile folders. I think that is what caused my original problem.

  • How can i install a windows version 8 on a 3 year old iMac 27 (only windows and nothing else not via bootcamp = result shut be a clean iMac with windows - no

When i now had recieve a brand new 27" imac, i had a 3 year old model 27" imac which my daugter want to have BUT i should be as a clean Windows thing -
so how to change the computer to a clean windows 8 computer with no apple programs in and no Maverick or other lovely programs?
I had seen on the net that a lot of peoble had windows with bootcamp - i am not a computer tecnician and when i try - i end op with a machine with could nothing - no mac programs - no office pack - no adobe programs - so i had to start op again with a new harddisk.
Some of the problem is that i dont understand the thing which bin told when you go to bootcamp for a user of mac's since the model was the "classic" and we make newspapers on them - so i want and easy way to have and mac computer for my self (the new one) and let my daugter have a beutiful imac with windows on.
dont begin talking about parrelles i had try that, results it had a windows 7 which cant be updated, apple dont support that and microsoft doesnt  so - help me
    regards

If you don't want Boot Camp and you don't want a virtual machine, go buy a Windows computer.
Both Boot Camped Windows and Windows running in a virtual machine work well. Your issues are because of your lack of knowledge or understanding, not because Boot Camp and virtual machines are poor products. Universities, large and small businesses, home users, etc. use virtual machines to run their operating systems.
Your statements about Boot Camp and Parallels are not the experience of thousands of users.
Either find someone who is knowledgeable about running Windows on Apple computers to help you or buy a Windows computer. Believe me, if you find a way to install only Windows on your Apple computer without using Boot Camp or a virtual machine you will have more problems than what you have already experienced.

  • Iphone 4s speedtest results not the same as imac's

i ran a speedtest on both products (same wifi network of course) and the download speed of my iphone is way too low compared to my imac's. just .5 mbps vs 3mbps on the imac. i already did the network reset on my iphone but still the same results. do i need to do something or do i just have to have my iphone replaced? thanks.
btw, when i ran a test using my network's 3G, it showed higher results compared to the wifi.

They should be comparable, but they will never be the same.  The computer has a faster processor so it should be able to download and process the data faster.
    Are the speeds dramatically different?

  • New iMac crashes permanently - bluetooth problem?

    Hi all,
my new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) is constantly crashing, especially after the execution of a particular gesture on the Magic Trackpad. The crash after moving the scroll wheel on a wired Apple mouse has so far occurred only once. After the phone call with the Apple support I have deleted and reinstalled the system and then copied the data from an old system from a Time Machine backup, and reinstalled my programs.
Unfortunately, the problems are still there. These are the results of EtreCheck:

  • Slow performance on a iMac 27" (maybe originated by the HDD)

    Hello,
Well, I've had my iMac for 10 months now, but have never really paid attention to its performance since it was my first Mac and I was upgrading from a quite old computer, so it obviously proved to be a far superior machine.
However, I noticed the problem when I started to be more critical with my machine's performance (this triggered by the fact that I bought, some months after, a MacBook Air which flies beyond time and space). Curious about this, I requested a friend to do a benchmark test with Xbench resulting in his machine (another iMac 27” with comparable specs) clearly outperforming mine. Even the Air, with its slower processor and smaller RAM, has a relatively close performance.
Additionally, I have started to notice how the computer takes a long time to start-up and, after the desktop is “layed out”, it takes a lot of time before the machine becomes “responsive” (I usually try to start Mail and Google Chrome as soon as the pointer pops in!) with the final result that I have to wait in company of the beach ball for quite some seconds (half a minute) and even after the application had started, I can still hear the HDD working it as if there would be no tomorrow! And then, it is slooooow. Funnily enough, “tougher” applications like Photoshop or Illustrator don’t seem to have as many problems, relatively speaking.
A little bit on the background info: I have two partitions: one for Bootcamp (since I was migrating from Windows, I had some software that I wanted to use there: Matlab and Office, basically, and then some smaller Windows-only programs).
Derived from the benchmark test, I think I might have isolated the problem to the HDD (not sure though!).
    SO THE QUESTIONS ARE:
    1. How can I verify that the slow performance is due to the HDD being defective/badly configured/etc.?
    2. Has the Windows Bootcamp Partition any effect on my machine’s performance under MacOS? (I would assume not, but you never know!). I have more than 1.3 TB free space left
    3. What kind of corrective measures should I take?
    4. Any other type of advice will be warmly welcome: I will try to do some PRAM and SMC resets but I am not counting on it. I had also ran the disk utilities and there were no permission errors (not so sure what this means, but I’ve read that it is supposed to be good news.)
    5. Any extra info you might need, lemme know!
    Greetz,
    Víctor.
PS: Sorry for the loooong post. I tried to be thorough!

    1. How can I verify that the slow performance is due to the HDD being defective/badly configured/etc.?
    Run Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    2. Has the Windows Bootcamp Partition any effect on my machine’s performance under MacOS? (I would assume not, but you never know!). I have more than 1.3 TB free space left
Probably not but 1.3TB of free space left on the total HD is not enough for OS X, OS X needs a minimum of 10-15% free space! If you mean 1.3TB of Windows space I'd recommend posting that question in the Boot Camp forum.
    3. What kind of corrective measures should I take?
If the drive is failing per the AHT then it's covered by warranty and will need to be replaced. Remember back up!!!!!!!!!!
    4. Any other type of advice will be warmly welcome: I will try to do some PRAM and SMC resets but I am not counting on it. I had also ran the disk utilities and there were no permission errors (not so sure what this means, but I’ve read that it is supposed to be good news.)
Can't hurt, make sure you read the instructions carefully and execute the tests exactly as they are described for Intel based iMacs.
    5. Any extra info you might need, lemme know!
If you no longer have a need for Windows on your iMac I'd recommend removing that partition using Boot Camp Assistant. That may correct your problems.
I would also recommend checking if System Preferences - Startup Disk and see if your internal HD is highlighted as the Startup Disk.
In addition I would recommend checking your Login Items (System Preferences - Accounts - Login Items) and delete any applications you don't need launching at Login.

  • Brand new iMac kills home network

I have a home wi-fi network with a BT Voyager 2100 router and several PCs and laptops. All works fine. So today - I power up my brand new iMac and the home network stops. IE and Firefox on the PCs give "unable to find xxxx" error messages. I have tried the iMac with both wireless and ethernet connections to my router - same result. Safari on the iMac simply does nothing, blank screen. To get my internet back I have to power off the iMac and then re-start the router several times. Eventually all is well again. How do I get my iMac to work with a BT Voyager 2100 router?

update to my post - an old iMac G4 works just fine. So I guess that basic connectivity between iMac technology and my router is OK... so why does a brand new iMac give problems ?

  • Hard Drive problem -- on a new iMac??

Well I finally had a problem with my Rev B iMac G5 (20-inch). Last weekend I got a spinning beachball thingie which disabled my entire system -- by that I mean Force-Quit had no effect, so I had no alternative but to restart. The machine certainly restarted alright, but instead of my familiar desktop, I encountered a folder icon with a flashing question mark inside.
Yuk! I've been around Macs long enough to conclude that the computer was searching (to no avail) for startup disk. When I restarted with the Install disc in the drive (and the C key held down), the System OSX installer was confused: when asked for a destination to install OSX, no hard drives were shown! I tried all manner of troubleshooting quick-fixes, and even called Apple Tech Support. The techie guy walked me through several more potential solutions, and I even took the back off the computer in order to press down a button inside (I believe it was an SMU button, not sure).
Anyway, no solution could be found, so the techie suggested I take my computer to an Apple-authorized repair center. As a result, my 5-month-old iMac G5 is now languishing in an Apple hospital in Richmond BC, where it's been for the last couple of days.
I'm typing this at the local library, by the way!

Yeah i have to empathise with you, i bought a Rev B 17" imac in August and within a month i was having problems. i tried quite a lot, including an hour on the phone to the service support guys who eventually directed me to my local Apple Authorised dealer who have been realy good. they found out i had a faulty hard drive, so it has since been ordered from Apple who dont have it in stock which is a bit annoying but i dont actually need it at the moment which is lucky. When the imac does work though, it is amazing. i have just recently moved from windows. this is my first mac and it is lovely but i do stuggle with a few compatibility issues. but love it so i hope everything goes well for u.

  • Can't see shares between Windows XP PCs and iMac

I have an Intel iMac running 10.4.9. I have 2 Windows XP-based PCs. One Windows PC and the iMac are connected wirelessly. The other Windows PC is on wired Ethernet. On both the Windows PCs and iMac the firewalls are disabled. The machines are on the same IP subnet (192.168.2.x)
Windows file sharing is turned on via the Mac's System Preferences. In addition, I've created an SMB share to another volume using SharePoints. I also set the SMB workgroup of the of the machines to a common name. Likewise, I have shared directories on both Windows PCs.
My problem is that I can't access the shares on the iMac from the Windows PCs and vice versa. The Windows PCs can see each others' shares.
One thing I've noticed is that I can't ping the iMac from a Windows PC, but I'm not sure if that service is normally running on the iMac. I can ping both of the Windows PCs from the iMac. I can see the computername of the iMac in the Windows Network list of workgroup computers, but when I click on it, I get a message that it's not accessible and that the network path was not found. I don't see the Windows PC's workgroup in the Mac's Network browser via the Finder at all. I also can't connect using the "Connect to Server command" and directly entering the IP address as "smb://192.168.2.2/sharename" I just get the "Connecting..." window and the candycane progress bar indefinitely.
This all worked at one point with a previous router, but I didn't use any sharing for a month or two and switched routers. But basically the network's config is the same.
Any ideas how to get sharing working in either direction?
    Thanks,
    Judd

Well I've double checked and under the Sharing preference, if I click on the Firewall option (tab), it says "Firewall Off" with a "Start" button below it. I also tried turning it on (with the various services that I want to enable checked in the list below it) and turning it back off. Same result: I can see the iMac in the Windows network neighborhood (and the iMac's iTunes shared library name in iTunes) but if I try to access the share or the iTunes library, the Windows PC fails to connect.
Is there some command I can issue in Terminal to better see what state the firewall is in?
Yes, I have a wireless router, through which the Windows PC and iMac are connecting.
    Thanks,
    Judd

  • Crisis created while trying to use Boot Camp - iMac Dead ! ! !

4-5 year old intel based iMac running Snow Leppard
Downloaded a full version of Windows 7 from Microsoft. It came as three files. Two Unix Executable files and a Document file.
While going through the Boot Camp Assistant, the software partitioned my internal drive. Then repeatedly could not locate the Windows 7 files. It kept asking me to insert the install CD. I moved the files to the windows partition. Still the same results.
With Toast, burned the files to DVD as Mac/PC format. Inserted this disc when Boot Camp asked for a Windows install disc.
    That's when the crisis appeared.
Screen went to black with plain white text. "No Bootable Volume. Insert Boot Volume and press any key"
Keyboard and mouse do noting. Only recorse is to hold startup button to shut down. Got my burned DVD out by holding down eject key on startup. Tried starting up with Snow Leppard install disc without success. Tried waiting for the previously mentioned No Bootable . . . screen and then inserting Snow Leppard. Everything I have tried has left me with the same result and a totaly useless iMac.
How can I get my mac back?

Reboot holding the option key at the chime, you should get the boot manager which will list  the bootable partitions on your drive, post back with the result.
Did you do this without backing up your OSX installation first?

  • Intel iMac 17" 1.83Ghz Memory Issue

    Hello,
I recently received an iMac that would not boot. After seeing the ram used was Hynix I figured the RAM was bad (I've had nothing but problem with Hynix in Apple and Dell products).
Turns out I was right; after pulling those out and putting in a stick of Kingston, everything worked.
However, for some reason my iMac can only have 1 stick of RAM in it. The slot doesn't matter, as long as there is only one stick. If I put a second stick in, I get no boot audio and the screen stays black.
    I've tried 2 x 1GB DDR2-667 and 2 x 2GB DDR2-667. Tried these in my laptop with memtest86+ and they had no issues. Currently I'm just using 1 x 2GB stick.
At first I was concerned that the memory controller was bad; memtest86 on the iMac would fail regardless of the RAM but this turned out to be an issue with memtest86 and mac hardware.
Does anyone have any suggestions, or has anyone else experienced an issue like this?
I'm open to reinstalling OSX (currently running Ubuntu 8.10 and Windows XP on it) if there are any diagnostic tools on it that may be helpful in finding out what this issue may be.
    Thanks

    Hi Termina
The Early 2006 Core Duo and Late 2006 17" 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo iMac's only support a total of 2GB of ram.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23843?viewlocale=en_US
2 x 1GB modules would be the maximum ideal upgrade for that system, but if there is a bad slot then you should be fine running the current 1 x2GB module.

  • Use iMac as speakers over Bluetooth

I'd like to pair my 3G S to my iMac via Bluetooth so that when I play music on my phone, the sound comes out my Mac's speakers.
I can pair the phone and iMac ok, but it doesn't seem to support what I want to do.
    Any ideas?

You can't do it with Bluetooth, but you can get the same result by WiFi if the iMac is where you sync your iPhone. iTunes should have all the music that's on the iPhone, so use Remote from the app store to run the iMac's iTunes from your iPhone. The iPhone will show the iMacs playlists and songs, and they will play though the iMac's speakers.

  • Why are my drives so slow on my new 24" iMac???

I ran a couple tests and the data transfer rate on the internal HD on my 24" iMac is 43.5 MB/s write and 44.1 MB/s read using a 1GB file. Did it with a larger 2.4GB file and got up to max of 57.7 MB/s read speed. Ran same test using external FireWire 800 drive and got 45.7 on the write and 46.8 on the read. I was expecting for both the internal and external drives a transfer rate close to double this. Is this speed "normal" or is something whacked on my iMac?

I'd be real curious to see what results you get. My iMac's internal drive is a WDC WD3200AAJS-40RYA0. The specs on that drive are: Transfer Rates Buffer To Host (Serial ATA) 3 Gb/s (Max), Transfer Rate (Buffer To Disk) 972 Mbits/s (Max). I checked speed using Activity Monitor (in the utilities folder), AJA Kona test program, and I just ran Xbench 1.3 which is a pretty cool free benchmarking utility as I could compare results to other systems. Free program available here if you want to benchmark your system to compare: http://www.xbench.com/ It appears that my uncached write speed of 47.73 MB/sec (4K blocks) was quite a bit slower than another same system that had 81.04 MB/sec speed. Not sure what to read of all of this but I notice a lag when clicking around . For example when I click on Finder/Applications for the first time there is a delay of a couple seconds until the program icons show up. My son's MacBook laptop displays the icons instantly. So I'm trying to figure out where my lag is coming from. Below is a full print of my Xbench results:

  • Late 2009 imac super slow virgin media WiFi

    Hi All,
    I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on a late 2009 iMac 27"
A few onths back I had issues with WiFi dropping off, these issues appeared to have returned.
I did find a driver roll back page that helped me last time round but can no longer find it
In addition to this I have the following problem as well.
I am sitting here in front of my Mac and also have a Win 7 HP laptop.
    I am running speedtest.net on them both pinging the same servers for a speedtest and the results are;
    Virginmedia 30Mbps connection:
    Imac
    ping 27ms
    Download 14.24Mbps
    Upload 2.7Mbps
    HP Laptop
    Ping 30ms
    Download 21.29Mbps
    Upload 2.61Mbps
So, in a nutshell my 4 year old £350 laptop is kicking the pants off my £1800 4 year old iMac
Anyone got any ideas as to why this may be?
Both machines are running only safari/chrome respectively, no other internet load is present.
    Thanks in advance.
