Scart connectors

Will a Mac mini work with a scart to VGA adaptor? My TV doesn’t have a VGA or DVI socket, but I have found an adapter on the internet, will it work with the Mac mini?

Hi,
It is not designed to use with computer. You need more hardware to go with it. Much better to buy something like one of the following external optical drive, will be much cheaper

  • Connect ATV to an 16:9 analog TV with Component/RGB-Scart adapter

    Hi all.
I will use an ATV on a older 16:9 analog TV. My TV has a Scart connector with RGB input. I will connect the ATV over a component cable with a component/RGB-Scart adapter.
Is this possible or need i a new digital TV with dvi or component connections?
    Thanks, Ralph

    Component/Scart adaptor?
Component is Y,Pb,Pr and scart is RGB, I'm afraid they are two different things and you can't just simply connect the two together. There are convertors that will do what you want but a simple adaptor won't.

Can I make a connection from these tools or maybe I need more stuff or another tool to do that connection?
    Thanks for your help!

None of those options are ideal.
What model MacBook Air do you have? If it has a Thunderbolt output you can use this:
Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt® to HDMI® Adapter w/ Audio Support
Then you will need to convert the HDMI video and audio signals to composite video and stereo audio with something like this:
    HDMI® to Composite Video Converter
If your MacBook is an earlier model with only a Mini DisplayPort (no audio) then you need to connect its audio output directly to your TV.

  • Connecting to TV via S-Video

So, I just got my MacBook Pro yesterday from FedEx and I must say, I'm LOVING it. There's only one problem...
I purchased the DVI to S-Video adapter at my friendly Apple Store in KC and hooked it up to a tv last night to enjoy a dvd with some friends and all it did was flicker grey for a minute then the computer turned off! I tried again today on a different tv set just to see the same result. My question is this: Is there something wrong with my MacBook Pro causing this to happen or is it possibly the adapter I bought is defective?

I've had trouble if I've been using a SCART input with S-video in the past. Some TV's will have a double channel for one SCART connector. The way this works is that some connectors may have composite and S-video inputs, yet the TV has to be set to which input to choose from the one connector.
What you may have to do is select a different channel, otherwise you may get just a black and white picture.
I've had problems connecting to a TV and running with the lid closed on batteries, but no problem with it when running on AC power instead.
If it'll boot up normally, you can always plug the adapter in whilst it's on, and then redetect displays, just to make sure that everything is running fine in the first place.

  • Black and white TV display.

I just purchased a Mini-DVI to Video converter for my macbook to make my TV my new monitor (screen accidents suck) and now I've got a Radio Shack GoldSeries S-Video cable running to my Samsung tv. The resolution is fine and everything works great except for the TV showing up in black and white. I've called AppleCare and they're not sure what's wrong. Anybody have some insight on this matter?

I can think of two possibilities:
    1) There is a fault in the S-Video cable/adapter
    2) Your TV is set to the wrong input setting
S-Video sends the luminence (brightness) and chromanence (colour) separately. Either the chromanence signal is not getting through (option 1 above) or the TV is not using it (option 2). In the UK, most TVs have a SCART connector which can accept composite video, S-Video or RGB video through the same socket - are you using this or something similar? The TV needs to be set to display the correct input connector (SCART) but also the correct signal (e.g., SCART S-Video, SCART RGB etc.). If you just select the default SCART option, it would probably be SCART-composite, which happens to use the same pin as the S-Video luminance signal so you get a black and white picture!
Hope this helps (and that I got the technical details right),
    Simon
Edit: in short I think this is an S-Video/composite video issue - either the Mac is sending composite video and the TV is trying to display it as S-Video, or the Mac is sending S-Video and the TV is set to display composite.

  • B/W Tv out

    Hi to everyone
Before starting explaining my problem i've to warn you about 2 things :
    - My english could be bad
    - I'm not sure i'm posting in the right place, cause this problem is tv related but ....
    Here's my problem. I've a Msi Gforce 6800Gt 256Mb (my sweet little baby  ) and i've a problem with the tv-out.
My tv have just a scart connector so, to fit the s-video connector on the video card i bought a scart-svideo adapter. All plug connected but ..... the image on the tv is just black and white, no colors ......
Checking the cable (the one inside the gforce box ) i found that moving it near one of the plugs ..... here are the colors
So, thinking about a cable problem, i tryed to buy a new svideo cable (with gold connectors  ) but ........ this time i get only b/w, no colors (also checking all the new cable).
    Now i don't know if :
    - I'm unlucky and also the new cable is a bad one
    - I'm missing some key setting on display driver (tv-out set on all pal system, italy should be pal-b or pal-g)
    - I'm missing some key setting on my tv (that don't have anything i can set  )
    - The colors should appear correctly and the video card is not working as it should (go back to shop and have it changed)
    Thanks for support

Well , looks like i found the solution.
Under nvidia drivers setting, there's a tab that let you change the video signal that is going out on the tv-out s-video connector.
    It have 3 modes : auto/video composite/s-video.
It seem that the auto mode it's excactly the same as the s-video mode, so ..... b/w on my "only-scart-tv", while on video composite mode everything is just as it should be  .
Since i don't know how to delete the whole thread, hope it can give some good hints to anyone that step on my same problem.

  • S-Video out problem

I have a Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 notebook, and I'm trying to watch movies on my TV.
    accessories:
    - a simple converter cable from S-Video (yellow plug with 7 pins, fits right in the notebook's output) to RCA
    - an RCA (1 video, 2 audio) to SCART converter cable (scart side is input)
    - Samsung TV with only one scart connector (and coax of course)
When I press Fn+F7 and select the dual display (notebook and analog external), I get a message that no external monitor attached.
When I connect my camera with the scart cable video(yellow) plug, the image appears on the TV, so I think everithing is ok, but the notebook.
    Any idea would be appreciated!
    thx

    Teb,
    Things to try:
    1) Make sure the TV is turned ON before you connect it.
    2) If the TV isn't detected by Vista when you connect it, try adding the TV to the hardware list manually.
    3) Are you certain you're using the correct driver for your video card? You should be able to see the TV as one of the choices under monitors in display settings.
    I'm sorry that I can't be more helpful but I haven't gotten a 3000 notebook yet.

  • Video-out Monochrome

I've looked around the forums for this problem and found something similar, but don't know how to solve it.
I'm connecting my video-out on my graphics card to my line in for the TV.
Anyways, the picture comes up black and white on the TV and I've tried messing around with every little thing that everyone suggested, but it doesn't work still.
The S-Video connection on the graphics card is only a 4 pin, not an 8 or 9 pin as other people have suggested that might be the problem...
Any help to get this to color would be greatly appreciated.

Does your video card have a composite video output (usually a yellow RCA socket), or only the 4-pin S-Video socket?
If it only has the S-Video (aka Y/C) socket, and your TV only has Composite input, you either need a special cable that combines the Colour (C) signal with the Luminance (Y) signal, or (possibly) you need to tell your video csrd to output composite video on the Y signal.
Of course, if your TV has an S-Video input, then it should work with a standard S-Video cable. If the TV has a SCART input (23 pin connector) it gets more complicated, as the SCART connector allows for Composite, S-Video or even RGB connections on the one connector, but your TV might only support composite. If you do have a SCART connection, you could connect a 470 picofarad capacitor between pins 15 and 20 to add the C signal (pin 15) to the Y (pin 20). But from what I can gather, SCART connectors are more common on European TVs (PAL) than in NTSC countries.
    Hope this helps.

That adapter only takes the analog pins from a DVI connector and connects the to a SCART connector. The Apple LCDs need digital signals.
I did hear that an official DVI lead for gamecube

    If it provides digital DVI at 1920 x 1200 non-interlaced 60Hz.
Would it just not work full stop?
They might just be sending analog though a DVI-A, which will not wiork with a digital display.
Would i be better off getting eyeTV?
If the GameCube provides video that works with a standard TV, it should work with the EyeTV, but only at TV resolution, of course. You would want the EyeTV 250 or EyeTV Hybrid, not the EyeTV 200, to avoid video delay.

  • Connecting AppleTV to TV

The more I read on different Forums about how to connect my appleTV to my TV which does not have a HDMI, DVI connection or Component , then I get just soooo confused as there are so many solutions suggested and so many contradicted ideas so I need some help.
My TV is a Philips 32PW6506/01 a 32 inch widescreen

I don´t know a thing about Scart, YUV, RGB... so I hope some professional can help me with an advice what I really need.

Hi, I've got the same problem (and also the same TV model)
There is a possible solution here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=906299
You will also need an adapter to plug the composite cables from the Apple TV in a SCART connector: http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/YUV-RGB-SCART.html.

  • Vga - Hdmi ?

I want to connect my old geforce 2 mx400 card to a new hd-ready tv. For now it's connected over the s-video on the card and scart on the tv. the biggest resolution i can get is 800x600 and it has black border around it .  I want to try to connect VGA to HDMI, but is it gonna work? I have seen only VGA to DVI and DVI to HDMI adapters, and because of that i'm in doubt that this will work. Would it work just by combining together an VGA to DVI and DVI to HDMI adapter? Or am I better off buying a new (AGP) graphics card?

Interestingly enough, calling YPbPr component video is a misnomer since there are many types of component video, of which VGA is one (also known as RGBHV).  And since both YPbPr and VGA are so similar it's not too hard to wire up a converter yourself.  VGA uses 5 wires, one for the Red, one for the Green, one for the Blue and two for synchronization.  YPbPr only uses 3 wires, one for luma, one for the difference between blue and luma and one for the difference between red and luma.  The main differences between VGA and YPbPr are that YPbPr does not send green, and that YPbPr does not have horizontal and vertical sync wires. Both of these are easy to get around of actually, since you're sending luma and the difference between luma and red, as well as the difference between luma and blue, if you subtract the from luma both the differences between luma and red and between luma and blue, what you are left with is the difference between luma and green, and in component video used in televisions, the sync is on the luma (Y) wire as well.
Simply put, summing R, G, and B would give you luma, and then subtracting B and G from R would give you Pr, and then subtracting R and G from B would give you Pb.  Adding the synchronization to Y is slightly more complicated, but can still be done with only a few components.  Try searching google for VGA transcoder, VGA YPrPb transcoder, or DIY VGA transcoder or something to find a circuit someone has already built, there are lots out there.
Oh, and I just realized I am dumb.  I just reread your post and you said you had a SCART connector.  I live in Canada and SCART is usually used in Europe so I might not be right, but I seem to recall SCART on televisions using RGBS, but I'm not 100% sure. RGBS would use a wire for Red, a wire for Green, a wire for Blue, and a single wire for synchronization.  In this case you would only have to convert the sync being on H and V to simply being on S, which is is even easier than the way I described above. So yeah, sorry for the long winded reply, but make a search for a transcoder circuit from RGBHV to RGBS and I'm sure you'll come across something, it can  be done with few gates and a transistor or two, so look for something relatively simple.
Oh, and yes you can buy these transcoders, but they're usually over a $100 for only a few dollars worth of parts, and since it's so simple to build it can just be thrown on a prototype board instead of making a PCB for it.  Well, I hope that helps, take care.

  • No picture using component cable

    Hi All!
Sorry if this has been discussed many times before.
I have a TV without the ability to use HDMI, only SCART and I've bought a component cable in order to connect my Apple TV with my tv. I just can't seem to get any picture and I've already tried cycling through resolutions by following the troubleshooting (holding down menu and for 6 seconds and wait 2 minutes) without any result.
    Message was edited by: Jetwash13

Unfortunately it seems (although I might be wrong) that the cable is intende o work the other way around, ie the scart end would go into a compatible device such as a DVD player with component over scart and the RCA jacks would go into a tv. This is largely to cover the situation I mentioned before where scart on tv sets is usually composite.
That doesn't mean to say that the cable couldn't work the way round you are using it, I think it would, except that it would only work where the scart connector on the tv worked with component. As I said before 99% of scart connections on tv's are composite only. If your tv is one of those that supports component over scart, you may well have a setting on your tv that can toggle between composite and component over scart. You will need to refer to your tv manual to find this out.
If you have an RCA-RCA cable (any one will do) and you have a yellow composite connector on your tv, you can check if the tv is working properly by connecting the yellow port on the tv to the green port on the tv with the said cable, whereby you should get a black and white picture.

  • IMovie to VCR

I am trying to make a VHS copy of a project I have completed in iMovie. It is not working. I have hooked a firewire from my computer to the DV input of a Canopus, and then have put AV wires in the OUT area of the Canopus into the IN of the VCR. I try to record, and it is not recording on the VHS tape. What am I doing wrong? Help! My project is due this afternoon.
    lhmama1

    Hi ihmama
    You have a problem.
You are so near and NOT. You need to understand how Your VHS-VCR works
and how it can handle an input signal. This is not as easy as output.
My VCR has tree RCA-connectors + a S-video on the front - they only can
export out to a TV or camera etc.
On the back it has 2 SCART connectors but only the upper most one can
import. To use this I need a cable with RCA-connectors that match the
back of the Canopus and RCA connectors that can connect with a SCART-
converter THAT HAS TO HAVE AN - input / output switch. If not it only
    outputs.
You probably need to buy this. Hurry !

  • VHS image won't import

Hi, I'm a new user of iMovie '08, knowledge level 'fragile but learning fast', and attempting to create a demonstration for my singing students using interviews, dvd clips and VHS imports. The interviews imported fine, using a Sony Camcorder, and now I connected my VHS to my MacBook via Camcorder, and was able to import the sound, but no picture. The image didn't appear in the Camcorder screen either, so can I assume the problem is in the cable or settings between VHS and Camcorder? If it won't import I'd have to project the videos separately, but I do want to have a professional look to the presentation, and having this beautiful little computer which is capable of things I am not....(yet), is there anyone with experience to give some advice? The next step will be to try clips of dvd's, but I don't have much hope since they're commercial ones with opera arias. Well, that will be another post...
    Thanks for some help!

Hello Bengt, and thank you for your reply. I am beginning to understand - I connected wrong with RAC (we say RCA) on the back, but I discovered now that they are only audio in and out, so of course there was only sound. The VCR has 2 SCART connectors, but my SCART cables don't have one end that will fit the camera. That jack is just a mini AV. So do you think if I get a cable with Scart/AV mini, that the image will go out? There are also 3 RCA's on the front of the VCR, (video, 2 audio) but it says 'in'- will that deliver the image out?
The instruction manual of the VCR only speaks of a camcorder transferring TO the VCR, but not out to the camera, but also mentions there are other ways of connecting to other devices, but doesn't say how. I guess I'll have to get a new cable to experiment. Thanks again, and if you have any more ideas, I'm listening.
