Scary Technology Contest

Hey everyone,
Are you trapped in a house haunted by once useful, but now useless, gadgets and gizmos?  Is your outdated technology truly scary – maybe a VCR that eats tapes, a screeching dial-up modem, a dryer that devours socks, or a laptop that could double as a headstone?  Fear not, because Best Buy® can help!
Between October 7th and October 26th, 2009 we’re inviting you to participate in our Scary Technology contest for a chance to win a Home Theater makeover from Insignia and Rocketfish, with complete installation provided by Geek Squad (a total value up to $3,500).  We’re looking for original photos of the most terrifying technology in your home (or a friend’s home!), accompanied by a 140-character caption that brings your photo to life.  To enter – and for full contest details – make sure to stop by the official contest website:

Hi Anel,
If you wish to present about Java, you could take a look at some of the up and coming technologies at the sun site. A possible link to look through could be http://wwws.sun.com/software/learnabout/java/
You could talk about Java Card, Java Mobility Software (J2ME), Wireless Devices or you could look up N1 computing which is Sun's revolutionary architecture for managing entire network computing systems, allowing customers to treat the data center as a single system.
Simply get onto the Sun site and look around - you are sure to find a whole lot of subjects to present for your tech talk.
Hope the above helps
John

                WHO'S NEXT?
Every few years or so, the computing

in 1999 to the introduction of Hyper-Threading technology or 64-bit
computing into the consumer desktop space. This time around, the
radical change will take place in your garage, backyard or even in
your secret tree house. Yes! And this is the time and place where
you can start to put your creativity and thoughts to work and
contribute your ideas to shape the future of PCs.
    The MSI

    Umm.... Yep
Sorry if you feel left out there

  • Pan am, green chili, content, time and technology

pan am is not another cop procedural. Thank goodness. But it's struggling with the expansion of " flight crew" from soap opera to more relevant 'fact of life' re: air travel for first time above prop planes with frequent fuel stops.
In other words, " look down there...wow...no boundry line, no fence between A and B destination... just a big beautiful " world" with farm land, mountains, rivers, woods, and very bright cities... a new world for many .
lots of material if you think about it... and how to focus on that, have a character driven series that branches out to all those aspects of the period ?
I've heard from one poster that its just not his thing. His thing is also not cop shows. His thing is basically nothing out there. Weddings is his thing.
And secret agents who are rogue .... just killing eveyone who isn't honest.  I hope there is a series about that next.
I hope he does the screenplay and produces it and makes a few bucks for the effort if money matters to him.  Probably not.
Green chile, on the other hand, is a couple days in the making. Its not a tv show you watch that takes nothing out of your day or thoughts or actions to " see it on tv ".  You turn on tv and watch pan am. You wanna make green chili, you have to start cooking... and it can take days !
So, now I'm making my world famous green chili ... ( I know at least 4 people throughout the world now who have tasted my green chili ... hence, world famous... )
Famous because it will melt paint off your car if you spill it on the paint.... and kill all germs in your body including cancer... and make you think twice about ever eating it again when you go to the bathroom the next day.
The content of the tv show does matter, as does the chili ( in time... you have to make the stock first for the chili... you have to hook the audience with the tv show ).  Things take time ... and this world used to respect what takes time.
Think of wine and space shuttle and wheat and so on... things take time... good things...
Then again, there's the " paranormal activity part 2 " movie, and other things ... basically coming out of the technology and angst of society using the technology that allows for fun things to be done without the usual investment of larger projects.  This is nothing new. Midnight Cowboy was such a movie. So was a lot of other stuff ( Rambo ? , Dirty Harry ? ).   Do we want " Gone With The Wind" , " Dr. Strangelove", " Once Upon A Time In America", "How The West Was Won" etc... ( lets not forget the "art" stuff.... epics like " Ben Hur" etc ) ... or junky things made to laugh at ourselves and have fun ... like a lot of zombies eating people .... with abandon ! ??? )
I prefer scary snakes myself.. I can't imagine " Zombies On A Plane ".... how would it end ???
But anyway, time and technology , as they make it more possible to actually " shoot " movies etc ( parnanormal thing took what ??? 5 days ? ) .... or as everyone becomes more and more of a " critic" of things (   the definition of a critic is someone who doesnt actually " do " what they are judging.. if they actually " do " what they are judging then they are called fellow ' artists ' ) --- thru technology and time available.. .. are we making better products and having more fun and helping each other out a little bit more ???
There I go again.. ranting about art and product and audience and ( although you dont see it ...monetizing it through adverstisements and franchises ) ... and wonder if anyone with a new DSLR bought today will really make a fantastic movie tomorrow.. I hope so !
Count me IN ..... hire me so I can live another day and share my world famous green chili with anyone with an extremely tough hide.  ( and rear end ! )

Yes, back when I started with MS FS (cannot even begin to remember version number), I added a ton of Scenery Packs (many from a magazine called Full Throttle, and also some independent folk), plus a radio add-on, several weather add-ons and some others, that I do not now recall.
As Jeppeson-Sanderson was a client, I picked up a copy of all their charts, and most of the airport manuals (got those cheap, 'cause I bought the discontinued ones for nearly nothing). I'd spend as much time plotting my navigation, as actually flying them. Made it from SFO to HNL several times, and also did a DEN to LHR flight, navigating in about the same path, that UAL flies now (Greenland, Iceland, Ireland).
Back then, the ships that one could fly were rather limited, and I never got into "painting" my planes, or anything like that. Now, in Red Baron, I did create graphics and enemy planes, within Mission Builder. For me, that was where the real fun was - building those missions, and then flying them with the "video camera" on. Back then, there was an active NNTP community for Red Baron, and everyone exchanged missions, plus custom airplane graphics. Some neat stuff, and especially for the time. Now, I took great liberties with my missions, regarding history, as the RAF pilot (mostly in a custom painted Sopwith Camel) encountered the ultimate German aces, and all flying over Great Britian in the best planes that they ever flew - though by that point, some were deceased. Also, few, if any, ever flew over GB, so one would only have encountered them over France, Holland, Belgium or Germany. Still, having 4 top aces attacking you, at night, with GR dirigibles all around, was a tough mission. If one survived, and continued the patrol, they had to face the rest of the GR airforce's best, in waves. I had those missions set to real weather, real fuel, real ammo loads, but others could have gone in and adjusted those settings, with but a little work. Few could ever complete even the easiest, but many tried. Had I not been able to furnish the "camera footage," few would have believed that I could do it. It WAS a bit easier, since I had designed each mission, but after about 10, one tends to forget who attacks you, where and when. Also, if one was a bit slow in dispatching, say the first wave, then it was likely that another wave of GR planes might joing up, since I had them all pretty much on the same vector, so that one would encounter them (no fun if everyone misses each other!) along the patrol's flight path. Also, if one did not navigate well, they could miss all the action, and would then wonder what the big deal was about. I furnished the coordinates of each leg, so one needed to also be looking at the maps, while watching the skies. Just flat great fun. Back then, Red Baron was NOT a multi-player fs, but think that the new one had added that - the one where I couldn't get off the ground, or had my posterior handed to me, by average enemy pilots in inferior planes!
Got to dig into the dusty Hunt Archive of Ancient Computer Games, and see if anything is still around. Unfortunately, much would be on floppies, or diskettes, so I would need to dig up some legacy hardware to even load them, if any would even run on XP-Pro. Some go back to about Windows 2.0, IIRC. Even with Win 3.1.1, I had to use memory managers and special boot discs, just to get enough memory to fly the missions. That was a limitation for some, as folk were not using 24GB of RAM, which was managed well. If Red Baron I and Mission Builder would run on a hot Win7 box, I can only imagine the missions that could be buit. In my case, I used up the full 640K, and then all the expanded and extended memory possible. Someone with only 512MB RAM would be left out from some of the longer missions. I did a few, that were scaled back, for the 512K crowd.
Take care, and watch out - Bogey at 12:00 o'clock, right out of the Sun.

  • Feedback on Regional Contests

Hey SpiceHeads,I think since we've started allowing contests within the community, there has been feedback on those which are regionally based. When we posted ourBest Practices for Spiceworks Contests, one of the things we require someone to call out what regions so people would know quickly if it is a contest they can participate in or not. But unfortunately, we're seeing where contests are getting overrun by this feedback instead of being entries for said contest and derailing it (even when the contest clearly states what regions are applicable). Since we don't want to stifle conversations about this, we're creating this topic where SpiceHeads can give feedback on their thoughts about regional contests. To kick it off, I'd like to give some reasons as to why you see this happen. One challenge that I see is when a contest is run by a...

    Hi Anel,
If you wish to present about Java, you could take a look at some of the up and coming technologies at the sun site.

  • How Lenovo Is Using NFC Technology

As a software architect at Lenovo, I get to see lots of new, exciting technology that gets built into Lenovo computers.  NFC, or Near Field Communication, which is available in many Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks and tablets, is a technology with lots of promise.  NFC enables simple communication between devices over a wireless protocol at close distances (< 4cm).  NFC helps provide a simple way for sharing content between devices with a simple tap.
Simply tapping NFC-enabled headphones, for example, allows them to be Bluetooth paired to the computer without requiring searching for the device or entering any pairing PIN codes – making the process much simpler for users.  There are many NFC-enabled devices available, including tags, cards, and popular smartphones.  We hope to see lots of other uses of NFC technology come along.
Microsoft added NFC APIs to Windows 8, making it easier for developers to interact with NFC devices.  See "Develop a cutting edge app with NFC".
Google also has built NFC support into Android.  See "NFC Basics".
What kind of cool stuff can you do with NFC?  Well, that’s what we’d like you to tell us!  Lenovo is the OEM sponsor of an NFC app developer contest, and we’re hoping to see some great new ways to use NFC in Windows 8!  We’re encouraging developers to enter the contest and show us some creative uses for NFC in Windows 8 apps.  You could win some great prizes!
Talk to us here in the forum about your experiences with developing apps with NFC.

    Hi Jonas,
Yes, tapping an NFC device, such as your phone, is definitely an interesting use case, especially as more mobile devices pick up NFC support.  There actually may be solutions out there that support this capability today.  If you have some unique twist to the idea, or are interested in implementing something and have any questions, please let us know!
    Thanks,
    David

  • Breeze Meeting Sync SWF SDK Contest

Announcing the Sync SWF SDK contest for our Flash developer
community! With the Breeze Meeting Sync SWF SDK, Adobe has enabled
developers to create custom collaborative applications, using a set
of easy-to-use ActionScript APIs. As adoption of Breeze rises, more
and more customers are asking for specialized content and
applications that fit within the real-time collaboration framework
    Breeze already offers.
The SDK allows Flash developers to extend the functionality
of Breeze Meeting by synchronizing Flash-based multi-user
applications and content so that meeting attendees can collaborate
on them in real-time. Developers can leverage this SDK to create
interactive learning simulations, product demonstrations, sales ROI
calculators, financial modeling, or interactive ice-breakers, to
name a few examples, for use by general meeting organizers.
We want to get you, our development community, involved with
this technology -- it's the biggest innovation in real-time
collaboration since screen-sharing. Using the new Breeze Exchange (
    http://www.adobe.com/go/breeze_exchange),
you can now post their Sync SWF creations for others to try and/or
    buy.
To celebrate this exciting news, we are running a contest in
    which
four (4) $5,000 USD prizes will be given away. Winners will
be announced at Adobe MAX (
    http://www.adobe.com/events/max)
in October, included in Breeze customer communications, and
featured on adobe.com. The contest is open to developers in the US,
Canada, UK, Australia, Brazil, Netherlands, and Japan. For full
    contest details, please see
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/breeze/articles/sync_swf_contest.html.
I am looking forward to your exciting creations and
    entries!!!
    Sincerely,
    Fang Chang
    Product Manager, Breeze

It could really go in both, but I figured it was a little
more flash related...at any rate I figured out the problem...I
needed to listen to the roleChanged event. That event not only
checks if the role is changed, but also the initial role that is
set when the meeting room opens. Works like a charm now!

  • Database Contest Participation

    Hello Everyone,
die German IT magazine CT calls for an database contest. The principle
is similar to the J2EE PetShop. They just use an DVD Store implementation
    from Dell as reference.
I am currently searching for people who want to participate in that contest
as a team using Oracle technology. I have put an modified version online
(http://www.fm-berger.de/ds2_lazymonkey/). That page also provides links
    about that contest.
    My implementation uses:
    - JavaServerPages with OC4J
    - Oracle 10g R2 as Database
    - and I also use PL/SQL
If you are interested, patches and comments are welcome all the time.
    Bye
    Frank

If you have specific questions, you should ask in
macromedia.flash.actionscript - but what you want to do is
    easy. Have a look
at the LoadVars class, especially the sendAndLoad method.

    Good luck everyone.

    Hello everyone,
Here is my submission for the contest with 7 wallpapers (I know it's a lot... but I was inspired so... ^^ )
For the 2 first ones, I wanted some classic good looking wallpapers with the MSI Dragon being the center of it, with some high quality effects. So here they are, a bright version and a dark one.
    Hope you guys like it.
For the 5 next ones, I tried something really different. More in an advertising campaign way. Some minimalist looking wallpapers, trying to focus on simple things, no shadow effect. Art on it's purest form, simple but well thought.
I asked myself why people would chose MSI instead of another brand, so I figured the people who already know that. So I first started with the "Gamers know why" because it's obvious, then went to an iconic e-sport legend ("Legends Know Why") Mr. Patrik 'cArn' Sättermon, I think he and the Fnatic team clearly represent why people should chose MSI. So I used the Fnatic team for the third one "Winners know why", they are clearly one of the best multigaming team of the world and are sponsored by MSI for quite a few years now. (The picture is from the IEM 5 For the 4th one, I noticed that I start to see more and more MSI laptops around me, at college etc, so I thought that "The World knows why". And for the last one I tried to represent the spirit around the MSI Dragon and the whole Gaming part of MSI, that feeling of POWER. So I tried to make that last one a combination of the 2 styles. Representing the Power coming out of the Dragon... in a minimalist way. So here's "Unleash the Dragon". I hope I succeed. And I really hope you like my work. It took me several hours to complete that "campaign" and I'm really proud of it. I used the "#" system in it because as I made it as an advertising campaign, I thought it would be nice if everyone could share that spirit easily.
The picture of cArn and the one of the Fnatic team are from the internet, the rest comes from my personal pictures (textures and such) and of course everything is homemade.
    Cheers.

  • My G-Technology External Drive is no longer recognised by my MacBook Pro. How do i repair this?

Following months of straightforward backing-up (using Time Machine) my 1TB G-Technology External Drive no longer appears on my screen when powered up and connected to my machine. I have read that this can happen after updates are downloaded onto the MacBook Pro (or indeed any other Mac product) but with update downloads being inevitable this cannot be avoided. Apple tentatively admit this is a problem but offer no solution that I can find! Even more annoyingly the drive itself is designed for use with Mac products and was the simplest plug'n play device I have ever used. Ideas please?
