Scatter Plot will not start on requested date

Hi,
I am trying to make a very simple scatter plot in Numbers for Mac 3.1. I have created a table with two columns and 44 rows. one column is formatted to dates (year only), the other to numbers (3 decimal places). When I select the table, click on chart and then choose scatter plot, I end up with the chart I would expect to see, except it has added a couple of years I do not want and deciced to plot my first data point on the second unwanted year. How can I overcome this? I have spent hours at this and actually have worked for both IOS and CPU support in Apple so an not a complete idiot with these things, just cant seem to figure it out.
Appreciate any advice!
Regards
Daniel

Hi Jerry,
What I find odd about your description is that there is no way to format a number such as 2000 as a Date, even manually. And, if you enter a date such as 1/1/2000, there's no way to display it as 2000 via the format options.
I entered 2014 in A2 and it showed Automatic format.
I entered 1/1/14 in A3 and it showed Automatic > Date format.
Copy and paste to B2 and B3 then format as Date and Time > Year
Maybe the date display options vary between Regions.
Regards,
Ian.

How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Settings (and other Apps) Will Not Start (Metro)

This morning most Modern Apps will not start on my system, including the Settings app. It seems to be a DCOM failure and seems directly related to this old thread.

This is a current Windows 8.1 installation, full up to date on patches, and the problem still occurs after rebooting. I checked for newly installed patches, etc. and the only thing recent was the Windows Defender definitions update.
It's an i7 with 32 GB of RAM, fast SSD's etc. I don't believe this is a hardware problem in any way.

That matches almost exactly with the referenced thread. But that thread never seemed to give a set of steps to resolve the issue (other than doing a Refresh which would be a catastrophic waste of time, reinstalling my whole development environment).
I really would appreciate some help resolving this issue. If I'm in the wrong forum, please move or suggest a more appropriate place.

  • Firefox will not start and profile manager will not start

This has happened on two accounts on my laptop. I am running windows 7, 64 bit and firefox 18.0. Firefox had been running on this machine for several years without incident, but suddenly when I try to start firefox, it will not start. The little wait icon spins for about a second then disappears without starting firefox. Other browser will start and run. I reboot and when I click on the icon to start firefox nothing happens. I tried to start the profile manager as seen in the knowledge base, but nothing starts either. I switched to another account on this computer and firefox started and ran for about a week, until today where it just stopped working. I have not tried to reinstall firefox as the message boards say this will not help. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help. I had tried starting Firefox in safe-mode before I posted this request, but it did not work. I tried to restore the system to an earlier version, but that made everything worse. Two accounts were unusable and one sort of worked, so I reloaded the operating system and now firefox works, for how long, I don't know. But thanks again for your suggestion.

Firefox 3.6.8 will not start. I have to go to safe start, click reset to default, ok, then the shutdown box appears, I click cancel and it will open. I have rest profile, uninstalled and reinstalled, clicked alll he boxes on safe start, tried an older version need help. in English
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== either after I last updated to 3.6.6 or .7 or reset my inernet exploerer values to default

I had same problem where Firefox 3.6.8 would not start or open. Spent many hours trying different things to fix it. Uninstall of previous version and reinstall did not make any difference. Finally, after uninstalling Firefox, I searched for Firefox folders and files on my computer, deleted and removed all Firefox folders and files - deleted anything and everything related to Firefox so that it will be as if I was going to download Firefox for the first time ever. Then, using another browser, I downloaded Firefox 3.6.8 and installed it. It could be that some Add-Ons or something else from the older version of Firefox or profile was interfering with the new one. It was easier to delete remove everything and install all over again clean than to figure out which part was causing the problem.
Keep in mind, when you delete all Firefox folders and files from your computer, you are deleting all your bookmarks and all your Add-ons. If you want to keep those bookmarks, you might want to save the URLs someplace safe to bookmark them again before deleting them. You need to re-install the Add-ons also. Upon installation, it asks if you want to import bookmarks and settings from another browser or settings you might have. I imported them from my other browser. Now, Firefox works. I also installed up-to-date Add-ons.
I hope this helps. Always keep more than one browser functioning on your computer, just in case one fails.

  • ITunes will not start:  Get same error message ever time...

I installed iTunes 6 and quicktime and now it will not start up at all. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling as many have. The only difference is I am actually getting an error message. I do not get an hour glass as many have. I have tried deleting the suggested file found at: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info
This did not work either. I keep getting the following error window, and never see iTunes even try to launch: PLEASE HELP!!!!

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

    Any help is appreciated,
    Rick

I've also got a similar problem. I upgraded yesterday & today I find (mainly with previously purchased tracks) that iTunes only playes about 51sec of a track. The whole track plays when using "Quicktime" but this doesn't help me when I'm trying to put together a playlist.
    Can anyone out the help?

yet another forum suggested taking a cleanly shut down model.mdf and model.ldf from another sql server 2008 instance and placing those in the data directory while moving the 'restoring' ones to a backup location.  this didnt work either.  any help is appreciated im new to sql server and this is very frustrating!  thanks in advance!

I deleted the " Private" folder ... and emptied the trash. So the folder and its contents no longer exists on my computer at all !!!
I do have the OS 10.5 dvd that i purchased years ago...
But my computer will not start from it on its own.
My question is what is the open source or terminal language code used to tell my mac to look in the DVD rom drive for startup info?  I know that im not the only person in this world who has deleted the "PRIVATE" folder and emptied the trash so it no longer exists on their machine...
That said theres gotta be a common fix for a Power PC G4 that has the OS X dvd in the rom drive but wont look to it to reinstall the vital contents of the PRIVATE folder.
Once again there is not a copy of this file or its contents in the recycle bin...
Also rebooting the machine , pressing and holding the letter C does not prompt the machine to look to the dvd rom drive.
I was reinstalling pro tools and figured I would make some room by cleaning my computers HD...
Lol It was a bad choice to delete this file ...
    Thanks guys

Okay sorry it took forever to respond... But for a while there I gave up on this computer!!!!
Money's been tight lately , so taking it in to a professional was not yet an option... though I did consider it eventhough.
Anyway long story short im glad I didnt spend any money because I already had all the tools necessary to fix this issue but was going about it in the wrong way. Okay so here is my scenario and the breakdown... Though this may not fix the issue for everyone :( which *****... But I know we all will have different circumstances.
    Anyway here we go...
Okay so first things first....  Years ago I purchased the OS 10.5.1 disk ... So that has always been in my possession!!!!
I realize that some may not have a disk to reflash your OS to your hard drive... but if you do your in luck.
2ndly ... I had an external harddrive with all of my itunes downloaded music so it was more than okay with me to delete my primary HD because all the important stuff could either be copied over or repathed to be located.
-------If you dont want to read through the whole story the fix is summed up in the bottom section-------
    Okay so now the SOLUTION!!!!
By trial and error , and pure boredom I opened up my computer to clean the inside...
    AND
    "Disconnected the primary HD"
and just because ....... REBOOTED my computer. Just to see what it would do.
Upon restart and though it looked like it would repeat its usual cycle...
About 1 minute in to that process my computer froze for about 2 seconds and flashed to the OS installation screen.
Mind you I havent seen this screen yet... Probably hasnt been since I installed the OS years ago.
After a bit of trial and error...
I decided to tell my computer to startup from the OS 10.5 disk located in my dvd rom drive and restarted once again...
    this setting is under
    Utilities / startup disk
After a little more trial and error ... I realized that I could reconnect the primary HD , restart the machine and return to the OS installation menu.
    So upon this discovery
I went to the Disk Utility located under Utilities
Highlighted my primary HD located in the left hand column
    Once highlighted ...
In the heading section on the right I selected the option
    Erase
in which I erased My current OS on my primary HD ...
I used the first option in the list under security... Because it seemed like the least invasive and would take the least amount of time to see if this process would actually work.
    I FORGOT to add something...
Another reason why I deleted my primary HD!!!!!
I forgot to say that it WOULD NOT!!!!! Show up in the STARTUP list as an option...Even After multiple reboots....
But like clockwork... Once I deleted its name IT SHOWED UP as an option!!!!
So back to the next step...
I returned to the STARTUP option under utilities ... And was then able to see MY primary HD now as a startup option...
But ofcourse it had no name because it we previously erased it.
So when Clicking my newly erased HD ... I was almost immediately prompted to REINSTALL the OS ...
Which said it would take about 57 minutes ... But I believe was alot less...
My issue was resolved ... My computer then stated the install was SUCCESSFUL!!!!!!! :))))))))))) lol ;)
It was like I was setting up for the first time ;) asking for my registration info...
The dilemma of deleting the private folder and emptying the trash is finally over resolved. Done ... and no extra money spent!!!!!!!!!
Its really crazy that the information for such a simple thing is not readily available. Especially being such a simple fix.
I know im not the only person who's had this issue , because i've seen numerous posts with similar wording.
I also know I wont be the last person to have this issue... So I hope this synopsis makes sense.
    -------One more time the fix------
*Insert your OS dvd into your dvd rom drive.
*Unplug your primary HD or corrupted startup disk
    *Reboot your machine...
Upon restart your primary HD will not be recognized...
    * you will then be prompted to select your language.
    Once selected
*Click Utilities/startup... Highlight the the selection that refers to the OS dvd located in the dvd rom drive.
    * Click restart...
!!!!!!!!!!Be sure to reconnect your Primary HD Before your computer restarts and you hear the chime!!!!!!!!
If you do not replug your HD before the chime it will not be recognized.
    In that case restart again.
    Upon restart once again
    *Choose your language...
    *Click Utilities / disk utility
In the left column select and
    *Highlight your HD ...
Then towards the top portion / center of the page
    *Click the heading Erase
Then on the page toward the bottom
    *Click security options
This will then provide erase options.
    I USED THE FIRST OPTION
    "Dont erase data"...
    *click OK
    * click erase...
Once erased which should take a few seconds
    *Cancel the disk utility...
    * Click Utilities / startup
And your newly erased HD should now appear in the list.
    * Select your drive from the list by highlighting
It should no longer have a name.
*Once selected, you will then be prompted to restart and install the OS to your newly erased HD...
    Thats it!!!!
Once everything reinstalls re-add your personal info or registration info and you are up and running.
    Goodluck ;)

  • Mac crash; recovery will not start

Yesterday my Mac suddenly crashed into a screen with blue (and white) lines. It wouldn't respond to anything, so I powered it down and tried to boot again. However, it will not boot. It will show the Apple logo, request my password and after a while (with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel) it just shows a blank screen (grey), while the CPU fans are spinning like crazy.Sometimes will it not even get this far and stop doing anything before requesting the password. The guest mode has the same problem.
I basically tried everything to fix it; the recovery option will also show the blank grey screen but nothing else (even after 30 minutes); the internet recovery downloads fine and then pulls the same stunt, so even the recovery will not work. I've tried save mode, which cannot start up (Filevault is activated) and seems to end mid-way through. Sometimes the safe mode crashes immediately after the boot starts with a kernel panic (/sbin/launchd failed, errno 2); after resetting the NVRAM it won't panic.
I've checked the hardware (T startup option, full check), which al seems to be OK. SMART status from the harddrive looks OK (checked with DiskWarrior). Starting in single user mode sometimes gets me through the password request screen and allows me to check the hard drive (fsck -fy). This seems to change permissions, however, after a reboot or exit command, the problem persists and starting up in single user mode and performing the fsck -fy command again seems to fix some issues. When I enter the exit command in safe mode, it'll start up fine, but when the graphic user interface starts, it'll give me the grey screen again (so a blank screen, while the CPU fans are at full power).
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this? Since even the recovery will not start (and neither will the internet recovery), I've got no clue what to do to fix this issue...

Your comment about the "blue and white lines" has me wondering.  You say you have a fairly recent MacBook Pro, correct?  If that is the case, you probably have a model which has both discrete and integrated GPUs.  It is possible that your discrete GPU has failed, and whenever the OS is trying to switch to it is when your system just "hangs" (because the GPU has failed).  It all works properly as long as it is on the integrated GPU, but when something causes it to switch it hits the bad GPU and locks.
I would suggest that you make an appointment at your nearest Apple Store to have the specialists at the Genius Bar take a look at it for you.  If you are still under the 1 year warranty (or extended Apple Care if you purchased it) then any needed hardware repairs would be free, unless it is due to accidental damage such as a spill in the keyboard, etc.
If you don't have access to an Authorized Apple Service Center, and you do have access to another Mac, you could try making an external boot drive on the other Mac, then install the app "gfxCardStatus" on that MacOS instance (when booted from the external drive).  While still booted from the external drive, use the gfxCardStatus app to force the Mac to only use the integrated GPU then shutdown and boot your "dead" Mac from that drive.   If it boots and runs, now, try to change the external drive to force to use only the discrete GPU then see how your system boots.  If your system, will fully boot using one or the other, then it seems that your problem is probably related to one of your GPUs.  It could be a hardware failure, or it could be a corrupted driver.  If your system won't boot from either GPU, then my guess about it being a GPU issue is probably wrong.
