  • WSUS Server settings and Migrating SCCM 2007 Clients to SCCM 2012 R2

I am in the process of migrating a site from SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012 R2.
Whilst doing this I came across the following issue:
The first issue is the workstations are woefully out of date, patch and update-wise, some have never had a patch applied as the branch IT staff are building them from the original disk. The policy is set in the SCCM 2007 client to point the machines at
the 2007 WSUS server, which is not set to deliver any updates to 2007 clients and hasn't been for a while. So as soon as the client is installed they lose the ability to get updates from Microsoft and don't get them from the 2007 WSUS server either.
Issue number 2 is the machines are a mixture of hand-built machines to SCCM 2007 delivered images, the SCCM image is patch using offline patching so they are somewhat up-to-date, but the hand-built machines are not and as there is no standardization on
the Microsoft Update client settings, the IT person on-site sets it to whatever he/she feels like, as it makes no difference once the client is installed and the policy applied.
So, when I come to update the client from 2007 to 2012, the following occurs
The Client uninstalls, and the GPO policy settings for Windows Update are removed.
Depending on the setup of the client initially, some machines are then going to Microsoft for their updates (literally 100s) and although the new client is installed the policy update does not fire to update the Windows Update Policy settings, sometimes
for hours after the install finishes. My thoughts are that it just can't run the policy as it is bogged down by patches updating and, in some cases, rebooting and then updating some more.
As a workaround I have had to go in an physically disable Microsoft Update on these machines, which stops the downloading and eventually allows the policy to apply, after which the machine then begins to receive patches from WSUS in a controlled method during
    maintenance windows.
I have tried a number of approaches, even setting the Global Group Policy for Windows Update, but the install still removes the keys and basically sets Windows updates back to whatever it was set before the policy was applied and stays that way until the
new client is installed and the Machine policy reapplied. This can be speeded up by initiating it on the client obviously, but that would mean going to each client or using right-click tools on each machine, which is not an option.
What I would like to know is if there is something I am missing from my methods or is it just that I have never been on a site with such out of date workstations built in such different ways.
    Any help would be appreciated.

First note that clients do *not* get updates from WSUS in ConfigMgr. The Windows Update Agent (WUA) must point to the WSUS integrated into ConfigMgr (by virtue of having the SUP installed on it) but this is only to make the update catalog/metadata available
to it. Approving updates in WSUS is unsupported for ConfigMgr.
What you've described above is all working as designed although these clients are falling into a gap between the 2007 and 2012 configuration and thus they are reaching out to Windows Update during this gap and installing updates. To prevent this, you
need to disable automatic updates via a domain group policy. This will prevent all automated WUA activity including installing updates from any source automatically. This will not interfere with ConfigMgr Software Updates in any way though.

  • SCCM 2012 client push to SCCM 2007 clients

    Hi,
I'd like to upgrade SCCM 2007 clients to SCCM 2012. Their computers appear in SCCM 2012.
I could select them and then select "install client" but there are about 400 to upgrade, some or online some not.
Will the process of upgrade run when the offline clients get online?
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

If your clients are member of an Active Directory, you could also use a startup script to update the client.
Jason has a very popular script you can use:

  • SCCM 2012: push client sccm 2007 client worked but then no deployment is reaching the client

    Hi,
We upgraded an sccm 2007 client to sccm 2012 and are deploying a tasks sequence to it.
However, the task sequence is not appearing. Also we cannot connect via client center tools.
Sccm 2012 client seemed to have installed correctly.
Please advise what logfiles to check.
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

Sccm 2012 client seemed to have installed correctly.
"Seemed to install" or did it really install? Nothing has changed logfile-wise from CM07 to CM12: ccmsetup.log can still be used to examine if the client was installed successfully. LocationServices.log, ClientIDManageStartup.log etc for further communication
    troubleshooting.

  • How can I remove the SCCM 2012 client and reinstall SCCM 2007 client on all of our computers

    Hello All
We have  bit of a problem. Our virtual SCCM 2012 r2 server was deleted and the back solution we had in place keeps failing.
We do have our sccm 2007 server still in place but its only role was imaging as we transferred roles from one to another.
My question is now our support needs to remote into pcs but cant because the CM12 server is gone. How can I remove the 2012 client from all of our companies computers and reinstall the CM07 client so we can remote into computers again.
    Thanks in advance!
    Phil
    Phil Balderos

Run a ccmsetup /uninstall on the clients. You may need to run via PSExec. Then push out the SCCM 2007 client via the 2k7 console.
    Cheers

    Thanks Paul!
I have to do this on over 350 computers and 110 servers. How can I do it on a more massive scale?
    Phil Balderos
I would check Torsten's approach first and see if the ccmsetup will uninstall the 2012 version. I'm not sure. Obviously the other way round is fine.
Using PSexec you can script this to call up a txt file of all your servers/computers and run the uninstall.
    e.g.
    for /f "tokens=*" %a in (computers.txt) do psexec \\%a %WINDIR%\ccmsetup\ccmsetup.exe /uninstall
If your account has privileges on all devices you won't need to add in any username/password credentials. Obviously only devices that are switched on and you have access to will run this.
    Cheers

  • Collection in SCCM 2012 of SCCM 2007 clients?

    Hi,
I'd need to make a collection of SCCM 2007 clients in SCCM 2012. This way I know which clients need to be updated.
    Can that be done?
I guess queries can only be run on what sccm 2012 client return on info (I tried a simple query: configuraiton manager client state - version but it only return versions 5.x).
    Pls advise.

I'd need to make a collection of SCCM 2007 clients in SCCM 2012. This way I know which clients need to be updated.
    Can that be done?
Can't you just add the column '(client) version' in the console? Are they displayed then? (Also keep in mind that it's theoretically not possible that CM07 clients can be assigned to a CM12 site)

  • SCCM 2007 client registration not working.

    Hi guys,
i'm in the following situation. Existing SCCM 2007 server at a customers environment. Site is running in Mixed mode. Windows XP clients connected by VPN to the customers infrastructure. The only allowed communication is Port 3333 (http) and Port
3334 (https) from Windows XP to the SCCM Server for Client -> Server Communication. The client is not in the domain, has no DNS and no WINS available. Customer would like to install the SCCM Agent to these computers for hardware inventory purposes.
    What I did:
Changed the SCCM Client Communication Port from 80 to 3333 (HTTP)
Changed Site Mode Settings to "Automatically approve all computers" (I know it is not recommended but for first testing, this is ok for us.
Added a host file entry on the Windows XP client to point sccm01.mydomain.local to the appropriate IP Adress of the SCCM Server.
Manually installed the SCCM client on the Windows XP client by using the following command
    -> ccmsetup.exe CCMHTTPPORT=3333 CCMHTTPSPORT=3334 SMSMP=sccm01.mydomain.local SMSSLP=sccm01.mydomain.local SMSSITECODE=TST
I see that the client gets installed and shows the correct Site Code etc. but it never appears on the SCCM Server. The ClientIDManagerStartup.log shows that the registration fails:

  • Sccm Agent will not install via push on SCCM 2012 to computers that have sccm 2007 agents

I can not install the sccm 2012 agent on client computers via the push method or selecting the computers in a collection and clicking on install client nothing happens on the clients.
Also another problem is when i install the clients manually on the machines there is no site code and i can not "find site"
in both cases teh machines did have the sccm 2007 agent and were working fine on that.

1.make sure you have created the boundary group first. if you cant push the agent via push method, check the log files.
    2. also make sure that in your environment if you have a firewall then there are port need to be open for agent push.
    3. also if you have installed MacAfee agent on your client machine make sure the policies are not blocking file and print sharing.
    4. also the windows firewall need to open for file and print sharing of you are using push method.
did you try to push the agent via GPO?
IF not try to run the following script in one of the client machine. use this command in the command prompt.
in my case smssitecode is BLL
    MP is the management point.
    ccmsetup.exe SMSSITECODE=BLL /mp:sccmserver.contoso.com /source:\\sccmserver.contoso.com\sms_bll\client
run the above command in the command prompt of one of the client machine which you cant install the agent and see.

Try restarting the machine once. If a reboot is pending on the machine from a previous application/patch installation (via SCCM), then new installations will wait until restart.

  • SCCM 2012 client not being reinstalled after OS re-image

So last spring I rolled out SCCM 2012 and set up the whole boundary group/discovery thing so that it automatically populated my device and user collections based upon Active Directory.  All of my computers (app. 750) have been available in SCCM for
a year now.  All was good - I was interacting with my comptuers and deploying software through SCCM with no issues.  Now I'm doing OS re-installs (the OS image does not have the SCCM client pre-installed) on computers.  These are computers that
were previously known to SCCM, but after restarting them with a fresh version of Windows, the SCCM client software does not get re-deployed to them.  I've let them sit for hours, days, even a week.  I have Client Push Installation configured for
the site with an account that has both rights to the SCCM server as well as local admin rights on each machine.  If I browse to that machine in its device collection (where it remains listed), I can right-click it and manually install the client.
That works just fine.  But I don't want to do that for 750 machines.  Can someone please tell me what I'm missing?  Thanks!

No I am not deleting old computer records.  I'm the only one who administers the SCCM site but we have many technicians who go out and repair computers that may involve re-imaging.  They don't always take the time to communicate each one to me.
As for using SCCM for OS deployment, we're currently using WDS because that's what we had first.  I put SCCM in place just to have a flexible way to deploy software.  My next step - probably later this summer - will be to find a way to move
imaging over to SCCM as well.  However, this is not an immediate need.  What is immediate is that we're about to re-install our Windows image on hundreds of computers starting in a week or so and none of them are getting a client after the fact.
I have client push, heartbeat discovery, and clear install flag all configured but these clients just don't get reinstalled.  If I go to their device collection and tell SCCM to manually push the client to that device, it fires right off.  So I
know it isn't an issue with admin rights within the client push settings.

  • Client not installing during OSD - error code 80041002

    Hi All,
I have an issue using SCCM 2012r2 with CU1 where the agent is not installing as part of the OSD step 'Setup Windows and ConfigMgr'. The error being returned is 1603 and with a bit more digging this appears to be this error
Product: Configuration Manager Client -- Error 25150. Setup was unable to register the CCM_Service_HostingConfiguration endpoint
    The error code is 80041002
    followed by
Error 25150. Setup was unable to register the CCM_Service_HostingConfiguration endpoint
    The error code is 80041002
Having looked at some of the forums this appears to be a known issue which has a hotfix available if you are installing the client on a server hosting a ConfigMgr Management Point. However the issue I have is on a client PC during OSD.
Originally I was installing the CU1 update using the PATCH= property in the installation properties and as part of my troubleshooting I have removed this leaving only the SMSCACHESIZE, SMSMP and FSP properties in the OSD step. This was working last week
and I can see no reason why there would be any issues with this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me crazy!

  • Machines not removed from AD when reimaged - Not Installing client- how to resolve client not installing

Hello, i have across a machine that does not have the sccm agent installed, but states on the server that it is installed. Now I am assuming that someone in the team reimaged but did not remove from AD. If this is the case, how do i resolve this? I have
2,000 clients so need to know how widespread this is.
i checked the client logs but there are no ccm/sccm entries. I know i could probably remove from SCCM then run a Discovery Method, but if there are more out there, i need to find a fix potentially. The client is not installed on the image. Boundarys all
    set ok.
    SCCM 2012 R2
    Cheers

You could create a new collection with a query to find out when a clients last heartbeat was or maybe hardware inventory data age? This isn't going to completely solve the problem, but it will narrow down which clients your after. The queries I have below
have an age value of greater than or equal to 30 days. Just increase this obviously to query for clients that haven't reported back in longer amounts of time.
    Heartbeat Query
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System where AgentName in ("Heartbeat Discovery") and DATEDIFF(day,AgentTime,GetDate())>=30
    Hardware Inventory Scan Date Query
select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System where ResourceId in (select SMS_R_System.ResourceID from SMS_R_System
    inner join SMS_G_System_WORKSTATION_STATUS on SMS_G_System_WORKSTATION_STATUS.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId where DATEDIFF(dd,SMS_G_System_WORKSTATION_STATUS.LastHardwareScan,GetDate()) > 30)
Its also likely that clients in this situation will be marked by Config Manager as inactive. So you could also just sort by your inactive clients but this again will have a % of error as your inactive clients may be a result of workstations being off your
network for a prolonged period of time or simply turned off.
If you can ping a client that has a hardware inventory age of greater than 30 days but you have a client policy to run it say daily, then you could argue they fall into the category your after.
You could also look at this outside of the Console all together. A possible option could be to use a startup / login script to check for the presence of the Config Manager client and then install it if its not (there are quite a few about). If you're not
comfortable with this, then you could use a startup / login script to check for the presence of the client and write say a hostname or something similar to a text file.
    Cheers
    Damon
